Why the Saatva Latex Hybrid Earned Best Latex Mattress Overall
Saatva is one of my favorite brands since they consistently put out quality mattresses. Their Latex Hybrid is made with organic cotton, organic wool, and GOLS-certified natural latex, so you’re getting the best bang for your buck while also shopping green.
The combination of Talalay latex and coils in this hybrid allows for lift and give in all the right places, especially for folks who need more support like stomach sleepers or heavyweight sleepers. Combine this with its ability to keep cool and bounce back, and it’s no surprise that it’s earned my top pick for the best latex mattress.
What’s the Saatva Latex Hybrid Made Of?
The Saatva Latex Hybrid is 12 inches tall and composed of five layers. First is a Euro top surface made with hypoallergenic materials that are both breathable and soft. Underneath, there’s an organic wool layer that provides extra breathability while also acting as a natural fire retardant.
The Talalay latex layer is 3 inches thick and split into five zones that target specific parts of the body, especially the lumbar region. The coil unit underneath has individually wrapped coils that aim to respond to your movement and promote motion isolation. Both these layers also encourage airflow.
Finally, the bed sits on a sturdy base of organic cotton and wool, ensuring that it stays stable and lasts a long time.
What I Liked
- A pressure-relief star – I call this bed a “jello mold,” since it surrounds your body and conforms to your shape nicely. It makes for excellent pressure relief.
- White glove delivery – Saatva offers free white glove delivery on all of their mattresses. They’ll set everything up for you hassle-free, and even get rid of your old mattress at no extra charge.
Potential Drawbacks
- Poor motion isolation – The Saatva Latex Hybrid is pretty bouncy, but that comes at a price. I found that this bed didn’t stifle movement as much as I’d like, so I wouldn’t recommend it for couples who are light sleepers.
- Too firm for some – The Saatva Latex Hybrid is responsive and supportive, but might not cushion as well as typical memory foam options. Lightweight side sleepers especially may find this bed too hard for their needs.
Customer Reviews of the Saatva Latex Hybrid
On Saatva’s website, their Latex Hybrid scores a 4.8 out of 5 stars. Customers appreciate the Saatva Latex Hybrid mattress for its eco-friendly and durable materials but have reported that it is relatively expensive compared to some other latex mattresses.

Why the Nolah Natural Earned Best Latex Mattress for Side Sleepers
The Nolah Natural is a match made in heaven for side sleepers. This latex hybrid bed has a makeup geared toward pressure relief and responsiveness, with multiple layers of cushioning Talalay latex and a section of springy coils to keep you buoyant. Its pressure-relieving structure is great for those who want to cradle any problem areas while sleeping on their side—or even their backs.
More than that, this mattress is eco-conscious and hypoallergenic, constructed with organic materials and certified to ensure quality and sustainability.
What’s the Nolah Natural Made Of?
At 11 inches thick, the Nolah Natural packs a lot into its six layers. Underneath the organic cotton cover is a layer of GOTS-certified organic wool that acts as a natural, breathable fire barrier.
Up next are two different Talalay latex layers. The first is designed for pressure relief, and the second transitions into the coil layer and keeps the mattress bouncy. Inside the 8-inch innerspring unit, HDMax™ Tri-Zone™support coils make up three distinct zones to promote proper spinal alignment.
The bed sits on a bottom layer made of wool and cotton, encased in a cotton cover with handles to assist with easy movement.
What We Liked
- Soft but supportive – Coils and latex work together in this bed to ensure you’re feeling both supported and cushioned. Side sleepers and those with back pain should appreciate the offered relief.
- Multiple cooling elements – The Nolah Natural has plenty of breathable layers to keep it feeling temperature-neutral. From the breathable organic cotton and wool to the individually wrapped coils, its components encourage refreshing airflow.
Potential Drawbacks
- Sub-par motion isolation – What makes this mattress great for combination sleepers also makes it not-so-great for couples. The responsive surface doesn’t do much to mitigate motion transfer across the bed, so you’ll likely feel your partner’s movements on the other side.
- Not the best for stomach sleepers – The Nolah Natural, while supportive, is also on the softer side, and especially so for those who like to sleep on their stomach. Average-weight sleepers may find the mattress too plush, while heavier sleepers may sink in too far.
Customer Reviews of the Nolah Natural
On Nolah’s website, the Nolah Natural gets a 4.8 out of 5 stars. Customers appreciate the Nolah Natural mattress for its eco-friendly materials and pressure relief, but some have reported a minimal initial off-gassing odor upon setup.

Why the Plank Firm Natural Earned Best Firm Latex Mattress
Plank mattresses are known for their enviable, rock-hard firmness. If you’re looking for a latex bed that doesn’t skimp on firm support, the Plank Firm Natural should fit the bill.
It’s a flippable mattress, so you can switch up your sleep experience based on how firm you want to be. There’s a medium-firm side and a truly firm side, but both should work for stomach sleepers, folks over 200 pounds, or anyone just looking for a sturdy mattress.
What’s the Plank Firm Natural Made Of?
The Plank Firm Natural is a flippable, 10-inch tall mattress with two distinct firmness sides: medium-firm and firm. Both sides feature a quilted organic cotton and wool cover to naturally keep the surface from overheating.
Beneath the cover, 1.5 inches of Talalay latex on each side are what gives the bed its dual firmness—one side is medium-firm latex for pressure relief, and the other is firmer for more support. In the center of the mattress lies the 6-inch coil unit. Individually wrapped coils react to your movements to keep you lifted throughout the night.
What I Liked
- Keeps you aligned – The Plank Firm Natural’s firmness (on both sides) should translate into top-notch support for your back and spine.
- Major bounce – The combined efforts of coils and latex make this bed feel super springy. Feel free to move around to your heart’s content.
Potential Drawbacks
- Has a smell – During testing, I noticed that the Plank Firm Natural had a strong earthy odor. It’s not the chemical smell you’d get from a foam mattress, but it’s a little overpowering.
- Not for petite sleepers – Even the medium-firm side of this mattress might be a bit too unyielding for smaller sleepers. You’re probably not going to get the comfortable sink you need from the Plank Firm Natural.
Customer Reviews of the Plank Firm Natural
On the Plank by Brooklyn Bedding Website, the Plank Firm Natural has a 4.2 out of 5 stars. While some customers find the Plank Firm Natural mattress excessively firm, many appreciate its durable construction and high-quality materials.

Why the EcoCloud Earned Best Latex Mattress for Back Pain
The EcoCloud is one of the best latex mattresses out there if you’re looking for a soft yet supportive sleep surface to tackle back pain. Thanks to the bed’s zoned latex, back and side sleepers should be comfortably cushioned and lifted in all the right places.
We believe that almost everyone can get cozy on this bed, regardless of how they sleep, thanks to its versatile construction.
What’s the EcoCloud Made Of?
Stuart lovingly dubbed this bed a “freakin’ skyscraper,” since it’s a hefty 12.5 inches thick. Four layers stack up to reach that height: a cover, two latex layers, and an innerspring support system.
The cover is made from 100% organic cotton and sustainably sourced New Zealand wool. It’s breathable and protective, ensuring you stay cool while your mattress stays clean.
The 4-inch latex layer is composed of two textured sheets of Talalay latex, a naturally breathable material that will stay temperature-neutral throughout the night. Its hypoallergenic properties also prevent microbes and dust mites from disturbing a healthy night’s rest. Stuart said this layer helped “ease [his] body weight into the coils” below.
Finally, the innerspring layer provides pushback to support you throughout the night. Made from recycled steel, these springs are divided into 5 zones that target specific areas of the body. Firmer coils around the perimeter give the EcoCloud its great edge support.
What We Liked
- Eco-friendly – The EcoCloud lives up to its name with organic and hypoallergenic components, to which I give two green thumbs up! It comes with a number of certifications that ensure high-quality, earth-friendly materials and ethical construction.
- Bouncy feel – If you’re someone who moves around in your sleep, you don’t want to end up feeling “stuck” in your mattress. Since Stuart found “a lot of bounce in this bed,” that shouldn’t be a problem. Combination sleepers should be able to toss and turn to their heart’s content.
- Affordable luxury sleep – When compared to similarly constructed luxury beds, the EcoCloud comes in at a more affordable price. You’ll get the most bang for your buck without sacrificing comfort, sustainability, or durability.
Potential Drawbacks
- Not great for foam lovers – If you like to be swaddled by your mattress, look elsewhere. After testing the EcoCloud, Stuart decided that “we’re not quite at a hug-level yet.”
- Some motion transfer – Light sleepers need stellar motion isolation so they won’t get woken up by partners or pets in the bed with them. The EcoCloud did okay during our motion transfer test, but we still saw some movement.
Customer Reviews of the WinkBeds EcoCloud
At 4.8 out of 5 stars on WinkBed’s site, the EcoCloud has an overwhelmingly positive response. Customers appreciate the eco-friendly materials used in the WinkBed EcoCloud mattress but have noted that the price point may be higher than some competitors.

Why the Brooklyn Bedding EcoSleep Earned Best Affordable Latex Mattress
Latex can sometimes drive up a mattress’ price since it’s a unique, naturally-derived material. Brooklyn Bedding’s answer to that is the EcoSleep. After sales, a queen model of this bed will only cost you a little over $900.
But just because the price is lowered doesn’t mean there’s any skimping on the quality of this mattress. It’s made with organic cotton, organic wool, and natural latex—all of which are certified for safe and ethical construction.
What’s the Brooklyn Bedding EcoSleep Made Of?
The Brooklyn Bedding EcoSleep mattress starts out with an organic cotton cover that’s soft and breathable. Next, a layer of organic wool acts as a natural fire retardant.
Three inches of Talalay latex give the bed its pressure-relieving ability while keeping up the bounce. This springiness is only enhanced by the innerspring unit below, which consists of individually encased coils that respond to your weight and movements.
Finally, another layer of organic wool acts as the foundation for the bed.
What We Liked
- Plenty of bounce – As expected, latex allows for the mattress to easily spring back in response to pressure or weight. You won’t feel “stuck” in this mattress when you try to move around on top of it.
- Certified safe – This mattress boasts both GREENGUARD Gold and GOTS certifications, meaning that the materials used in its construction (particularly the cotton, wool, and latex) are sourced ethically and formulated to reduce harmful emissions. The bed is also USA-made, constructed in Brooklyn Bedding’s Arizona facility.
Potential Drawbacks
- Motion carries – This bed, like most latex options, isn’t the best at isolating motion. You’re likely to feel your partner moving on the other side of the bed.
- Might lack pressure relief – Some side sleepers, especially if they’re on the lighter side, may have trouble finding a comfortable cradle for any sensitive joints. We’d recommend a softer bed that would allow for more sink.
Customer Reviews of the Brooklyn Bedding EcoSleep
On Brooklyn Bedding’s EcoSleep website, the EcoSleep has a 4.7 out of 5 stars. Customers have commended the Brooklyn Bedding EcoSleep for its eco-friendly materials, but some have reported that it tends to be on the firmer side.

Why the Birch Natural Earned Best Hybrid Latex Mattress
The Birch Natural lives up to its name, providing a clean sleep experience with organic and natural materials. If you’re looking for a bed with plenty of bounce, look no further than this quality hybrid.
Its use of natural Talalay latex and coils leaves the mattress with built-in breathability and a medium-firm feel, which accommodates virtually any sleeping position and body type.
What’s the Birch Natural Made Of?
The Birch Natural stands 11 inches tall and has six layers, including its organic cotton cover. Next comes a fire retardant layer made of organic wool (rather than a synthetic option).
Underneath, there’s a comfort layer that’s also made of organic wool, providing temperature regulation and an innate elasticity that helps your mattress to keep its shape. This layer is followed by natural and sustainably sourced Talalay latex for pressure relief.
The innerspring layer of this bed is made up of individually-wrapped steel coils that offer edge-to-edge support and limited motion transfer. A final layer of wool adds stability and extra fire protection to the mattress.
What We Liked
- Eco-conscious construction – Birch took great care to make this bed with the planet in mind. Much of the mattress is composed of materials certified by GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard), which means they were ethically sourced and produced without chemicals.
- Strong edge support – The coil support layer is reinforced on the long edges of the mattress, ensuring that they won’t sink too much if you sit or lay on them. This feature is helpful if you sleep on the edge of the mattress or need extra support when getting into bed.
- High responsiveness – Latex is a springy material, so the Birch will feel quite responsive. Restless sleepers or combination sleepers should appreciate the ease of movement.
Potential Drawbacks
- It’s not super soft – We’ve deemed this our best pick for a medium-firm latex mattress, which means it’s not going to be very soft. If you’re looking for something softer but are still set on the Birch, Stuart suggests adding a mattress topper for a bit of cushioning.
- Not the best motion isolation – Unfortunately, because of the Birch’s responsive surface, motion will transfer more easily across it. Light sleepers may wake up more often from partners moving around on the bed.
Customer Reviews of the Birch Natural
According to Birch’s website, the Birch Natural scores a 4.6 out of 5 stars. While some users consider the Birch Natural mattress to be on the pricier side, it gains customer appreciation for its organic materials and sustainable, eco-friendly construction.

Why the Botanical Bliss Earned Best Organic Latex Mattress
The Botanical Bliss by PlushBeds is an impressively green mattress. But don’t just take my word for it: It’s been reviewed by multiple environmental organizations, earning GreenGuard Gold, eco-INSTITUT, and Control Union certifications. It’s even got GOTS-certified cotton and wool and GOLS-certified latex.
In layman’s terms: the Botanical Bliss is made with high-quality, sustainable ingredients without harmful chemicals, and it doesn’t cause unnecessary harm to the environment with its construction.
What’s the Botanical Bliss Made Of?
The Botanical Bliss comes in three thicknesses (9 inches, 10 inches or 12 inches) for your customization. The 9-inch and 10-inch models each have five layers, including an organic cotton cover, while the 12-inch version has an extra layer of latex.
A layer of organic wool sits on top of the bed, its natural breathability helping to keep you cool throughout the night. Then there’s a cotton panel beneath to ensure the wool retains its shape as you lay on it.
Two latex layers make up the bottom of the mattress. The Talalay comfort layer provides cushioning, while the thicker Dunlop support layer provides—you guessed it—support. In the 12-inch option, you also get another layer of Dunlop latex for added comfort.
What I Liked
- Bouncy surface – As I said above, this bed has amazing responsiveness. We have the two layers of latex to thank for that—they make sure you never sink into the bed as you move.
- Great edge support – When I laid down on this mattress, I felt like I was held within it. The edges should hold up even if you sit directly on top of them.
Potential Drawbacks
- Not enough pressure relief for side sleepers – Laying down on my side, I felt some pressure buildup around the hips. If you’re a side-sleeper seeking relief for your joints, memory foam might be a better fit.
- May be too firm for some – I personally ranked this bed as a 7.5/10 on the firmness scale, placing it on the firmer side. Its pillow top and overall bounciness keep it from feeling like a rock, but be aware if you tend to prefer plusher mattresses.
Customer Reviews of the PlushBeds Botanical Bless
On PlushBeds’ site, the Botanical Bliss gets an overwhelmingly positive 4.9 out of 5 stars. Customers appreciate the PlushBeds Botanical Bliss mattress for its organic and natural materials, but some have mentioned that it may have a higher price point compared to other mattresses.

What is a Latex Mattress?
A latex mattress is a bed that incorporates latex foam in its construction. Latex foam is derived from the sap of rubber trees. After being harvested from the trees, the sap is processed and molded so that it sets into a cushy block or layer, perfect for adding airiness, bounce, and support to a mattress.
Latex mattresses are often marketed as an alternative to memory foam and traditional innerspring mattresses. Some sleepers prefer latex due to how it performs compared to these other materials. For example, it typically retains less heat than memory foam.
Latex can also be used in conjunction with other foams and springs in a single mattress, so sleepers can benefit from the unique strengths of each material.
What to Look for in a Latex Mattress
When choosing a new bed, you’ll always have to balance its advantages against any potential disadvantages. Latex is an exciting and cutting-edge addition to the mattress scene, but like any other material, it’s not for everyone. We’ll review considerations when shopping for a new mattress and how each one correlates with latex beds specifically.
Other Considerations When Shopping for a Latex Bed
Sleeping Position
How you sleep should tell you what kind of mattress would be the best for your needs. Latex is good for combination sleepers, but different firmness levels fit various sleeping positions. Firmer latex beds don’t allow the body to sink as much, which should fit stomach and back sleepers. Softer latex mattresses are more suitable for side sleepers needing pressure relief and more contouring.
Weight/Body Type of Sleepers
Your body weight should tell you if a mattress will be compatible or not. Most people fall in the medium and medium-firm range, but if you’re significantly heavier, firmer beds are helpful for support and body alignment. Conversely, lightweight people prefer softer beds.
Latex beds are typically on the firmer side, although softer versions are available. Most latex beds are the best for people weighing at least 130 pounds. However, softer versions may work for some lightweight sleepers.

Firmness
Mattress firmness is another critical factor you should consider when buying a mattress. Latex comes in various firmness levels, so it’s easy to find the right product that fits your needs.
The right firmness will depend on your body weight and sleep position. Generally speaking, medium-firm beds are best for average-weight people, couples, and back sleepers. Stomach sleepers and plus-size individuals are a better match for firmer beds, and petite people and side sleepers should enjoy slightly softer beds.
Cooling
Memory foam is known to overheat often, making it difficult for hot sleepers to fall and stay asleep. Luckily, this is rarely an issue with latex because the material is temperature-neutral and therefore, doesn’t retain heat. Instead, it has natural cooling properties to help create a more comfortable sleeping environment.
Motion Isolation
Couples usually pay attention to motion isolation since this can help eliminate the problem of disturbing your partner if you move around.
The downside here is that latex isn’t the best option for motion isolation. The material is naturally bouncy, meaning it may transfer a fair amount of movement from one side to the other. Going for a firmer latex mattress may help a bit, but don’t expect it to excel.

Sex
Latex mattresses are an excellent choice for sexually active people. The material is quick to respond to movement. This means it springs back to its original shape more rapidly, which can help prevent you from feeling stuck in the mattress.
During intimacy, this responsiveness can allow partners to move and reposition more easily. Additionally, latex mattresses have great cooling properties that can help you from overheating during sexual activity.
Pressure Relief
Although latex beds may feel firmer than other types, they still offer plenty of contouring that helps relieve pressure in the shoulders, hips, and lower back. Softer latex mattresses are the best for people struggling with pressure buildup, especially those who love sleeping on their side.
Edge Support
If you’ve ever been startled awake because you felt that you were falling off the side of the bed, you know how important edge support is. A mattress that is equally secure along the edges not only protects you from that falling sensation but also allows you to utilize the entire bed. This can be particularly helpful for couples and those who just like to spread out.
Latex mattresses, particularly latex hybrids that combine this foam with a coil unit, often provide good edge support. However, we advise checking reviews on a specific bed and seeing if the company has added reinforced materials along the sides, which typically signifies stronger edges.
Hypoallergenic Properties
Latex is relatively inhospitable to dust mites, mildew, and mold. If you have allergies, a latex bed could help you breathe easier and get a better night’s sleep — as long as you don’t have a latex allergy.
Natural vs. Synthetic
If having more eco-friendly products in your mattress is important to you, then natural or organic latex could be a great match. On the flip side, there are synthetic latex options, which blend man-made and natural latex.
The most significant upside to synthetics is the price. However, they can have a strong odor, particularly in the first few days.
Budget
Latex mattresses, particularly natural or organic ones, are high-quality products, but this also means you can expect a slightly higher price tag. While the upfront cost may be higher, their durability means they should last longer, ultimately saving you money since you won’t have to buy a new bed as soon.
To help reduce costs, consider buying online and look for coupons and promotions that many brands offer throughout the year. Many brands also offer deals around holidays like Labor Day, Presidents’ Day, and the Fourth of July.
Which Latex Type Is Better: Dunlop or Talalay?
Neither type of latex foam is innately better than the other, and the differences between them can even go largely unnoticed by some sleepers. Both Talalay and Dunlop are durable, comfortable latex foams. As with many choices, it pays to experience both options and see for yourself how you feel about them.
Dunlop Latex – To make Dunlop latex, liquid sap is harvested from tapped rubber trees. The collected material is then whipped up, poured into a mold until the mold is filled completely, and heated in a vulcanization oven. The vulcanization process is crucial because firms up the rubber and gives it that bouncy, elastic feeling.
Dunlop is a denser latex foam than Talalay and is often used as a support layer (rather than a comfort layer) due to its density. However, it’s important to remember that “denser” doesn’t always mean “firmer” — both types of latex foam can feel soft or firm, depending on how they’re utilized in a mattress. Generally, though, Dunlop latex is firmer than Talalay latex.
Talalay Latex – The Talalay latex manufacturing process is a bit different. When the liquid latex is poured into the mold, it doesn’t fill the mold to the brim. A vacuum is then applied to the sealed mold, which allows the latex to expand inside it. The expanded latex is flash-frozen, then vulcanized, washed, and dried.
Talalay has more bounce to it than Dunlop, and although both kinds of latex foam are naturally springy, Talalay tends to have a more pronounced responsiveness to it.
Best Latex Mattress FAQs
What are the advantages of a latex mattress?
Latex mattresses are excellent for those who want an organic bed free of chemicals and other harmful substances. Their responsive nature makes them easier to move about on. They last a long time, help dissipate body heat, and offer gentle cradling for pressure relief.
Are latex mattresses eco-friendly?
Latex mattresses can be a more eco-friendly option than other bed types, and they appeal to people who want biodegradable and natural (rather than synthetic) products. However, just because a bed is advertised as a latex mattress doesn’t mean it’s automatically meeting an environmental gold standard.
Natural latex mattress layers come from the sap of a rubber tree that’s been processed into a supportive foam. Not every latex foam can be said to be completely natural or organic — sometimes synthetic materials are added to the mix. If you want to maximize the eco-friendliness of your mattress purchase, look for latex mattresses with a high percentage of natural materials and certifications from places such as OEKO-TEX®, GREENGUARD Gold, GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard), and GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard).
Are latex mattresses better than memory foam mattresses?
Latex mattresses and memory foam mattresses each have their own pros and cons, so it’s a matter of finding what suits you the best. For example, memory foam offers more contouring while latex is bouncier and better for hot sleepers. They’re both valuable products, but you need to see which type works best for you specifically.
How much does a latex mattress cost?
A Queen-size latex mattress typically costs around 2,000 dollars, but that’s a rough average. Certain latex mattresses may exceed 3,000 dollars in price, whereas models aiming for affordability (or those with an applicable discount) can cost much less. The materials within the mattress, its size, certain certifications, and even the time of year can all influence how much a latex mattress costs.
How long will a latex mattress last?
Most latex mattresses should last at least eight years or longer, depending on how you use them. In other words, jumping on the bed will shorten its lifespan. If used correctly, a latex bed should outlast most innerspring and foam models—they’re some of the most durable mattresses on the market.
What does a latex mattress feel like?
A latex mattress feels slightly springy and pleasantly firm. You should still feel cushioned by a latex bed, but you won’t find it as yielding as a memory foam mattress, and you won’t sink deeply into it. Latex is responsive but not as overtly bouncy as an innerspring mattress, which is why it’s often equated to a comfortable “in-between” option in terms of sensation.
Do latex mattresses sleep hot?
Latex mattresses should remain cooler throughout the night than memory foam beds, which have a tendency to trap heat near your body. Latex beds are more breathable and temperature-neutral.
Air is free to flow through the latex foam when you move around on it, and this can carry away heat that might build up inside it. As a bonus, this breathability goes hand-in-hand with its quick response time, helping to ensure you don’t feel trapped in your bed or struggle to roll over in the night.

Are latex mattresses good for back pain?
Latex beds are excellent for dispersing body weight and relieving pressure, which should help reduce back pain. These are also great for supporting the spine, which should help relieve back pain regardless of your preferred sleeping position. However, the level of support depends on the firmness you choose.
