Highest Rated Mattresses for Neck Pain (2024)

Last Updated on January 16, 2024

Written by Julia Forbes, Expert Reviewed by Amanda Marten, MSN, FNP-C

When you’re living with neck pain, everyday tasks (and even movements) can become troublesome. Achieving a good night’s sleep might be its own gauntlet of discomfort, especially if your bed is contributing to the problem.

In the interest of helping people find some measure of relief, we’ve compiled a list of the best mattresses for neck pain. These beds encourage proper spinal alignment, provide sturdy support, and prevent pressure build-up around crucial areas of the body. They’re not necessarily a quick fix for all your neck issues, but hopefully they’re a step towards feeling less stiff and more well-rested.

Our Top Pick for the Best Bed for Neck Pain

We picked the Helix Midnight as our top pick because of its medium-firm, supportive feel that alleviates pressure points.

Best Mattresses for Neck Pain

Sleep Advisor’s Testing Methodology

At Sleep Advisor, our mattress reviews are based on findings from in-person tests that allow us to have a genuine understanding of how the mattress feels and performs. We look at features that are valuable to consumers, such as temperature control, bounce, edge support, and motion isolation.

We also evaluate mattress performance for back, side, and stomach sleeping. Lying in different positions lets us know how supportive the bed is and if it’s good at relieving pressure.

We then take all the information we’ve gathered to rate the bed in specific categories. These results allow us to help our readers find the right mattress for their needs.

Why the Helix Midnight Earned Best for Side Sleepers with Neck Pain

The Helix Midnight features coils and foam, both of which can contribute to neck pain relief by creating a medium-firm feel. The memory foam soothes pressure points while cradling the body, and the coils support the sleeper’s weight, allowing for proper spinal alignment.

The Midnight’s cushiony-yet-secure feel was also designed for side sleepers, who have to keep an eye on pressure buildup around their shoulders and hips.

What’s the Helix Midnight Made Of?

At 12 inches tall, the Helix Midnight has a total of six layers including a cover. You can choose between two: the standard stretchy Soft Touch cover or the upgraded cooling GlacioTex™ cover for an extra fee.

Then come three layers of foam, all CertiPUR-US® certified: a pressure-relieving memory foam, a more responsive cushioning foam, and a firmer transitional foam.

A closer look at the Helix Midnight mattress construction
Take a closer look at the mattress construction of the Helix Midnight

Underneath is the coil layer, with up to 1,000 individually wrapped coils for targeted support. These springs are also reinforced along the long edges of the mattress. Finally, a dense foam base ensures the stability of the bed.

Our Take: “It definitely has good response and bounce. I can move and adjust positions, no problem… I like how my hips and shoulders have a little cushion around them.” Emma Mattei, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What We Liked

  • Versatile – The Midnight is 12 inches tall and medium-firm, so it should be good for other sleeping positions, too. Our testers particularly enjoyed it on their backs.
  • Bouncy but motion-isolating – We were surprised that the Helix Midnight was able to isolate motion as well as it does, considering it’s a responsive hybrid. This combination should work great for restless couples.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Can get too firm – Some lightweight sleepers who sleep on their side may still find this bed a bit too firm for the pressure relief they need.
  • Not a traditional foam feeling – The Helix Midnight is a hybrid, and it has some foams on top of its coil unit, but they aren’t enough to give it a true cradling or “hugging” feeling. Foam purists should consider the all-foam mattresses on our list.

Customer Reviews of the Helix Midnight

The Helix Midnight rates 4.5 stars out of 5 on Helix’s website. The main negative is that reviewers tend to find it too soft for their liking and feel as though they’re sinking. But overall, users say they’re getting a great nights’ sleep and some pain relief.

Why the Nolah Signature Earned Best Mattress for Pressure Relief with Neck Pain

If you’re seeking a mattress that mitigates neck pain and delivers helpful pressure relief, Nolah’s Signature model is a great option. This 12-inch bed features an all-foam design that includes two layers of proprietary Nolah AirFoam™. According to the brand, this material is much more effective at providing pressure relief than traditional memory foam.

At the top of the mattress is a plush version of AirFoam™ that contours to the body to relieve uncomfortable pressure buildup, even at the neck. Further below is a secondary, slightly firmer AirFoam™ layer to give the sleeper even more pressure relief and support.

What’s the Nolah Signature Made Of?

The Nolah Signature is 12 inches thick with four layers plus its organic cotton cover.

Underneath the cover is 2.5 inches of Nolah’s proprietary AirFoam™ that’s designed to be cooler than memory foam without sacrificing any of the cushioning. Next is a 1.5-inch layer of responsive foam also designed to allow for extra airflow. Another 1-inch layer of AirFoam™ rounds off the top layers, but this one is firmer for more support.

The core of the mattress is a 7-inch thick foundation of dense foam that gives the mattress its durability.

Our Take: “The Nolah Signature is a softer mattress, so it’s going to excel for side sleepers who want pressure relief in their shoulders and hips.” – Emma, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What We Liked

  • Cooler than typical foam – With its open-celled design, AirFoam™ makes the Nolah Signature more breathable and thus more cooling than the traditional all-foam mattress—so you can get hugged by your mattress without overheating.
  • Soft but supportive – The combination of pressure-relieving foams and a solid core give the Nolah Signature a unique balance of cushioning and lift.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Can feel too soft – This bed is best suited for folks looking for a soft bed, like side sleepers or some back sleepers. Stomach sleepers and heavier folks probably won’t get the support they need and should choose a firmer mattress.
  • Lacking edge support – The Nolah Signature doesn’t have any special reinforcement around its perimeter, so the edges are likely to sink when you lay or sit on them.

Customer Reviews of the Nolah Signature

The Nolah Signature gets a 4.8 out of 5 stars on Nolah’s website. One potential drawback of the Nolah Signature mattress is its limited firmness options, but it excels in providing exceptional pressure relief and a cooling sleep experience.

Why the WinkBed Earned Best Mattress for Couples with Neck Pain

The WinkBed mattress is a hybrid model available in three firmness levels: Softer, Luxury Firm, and Firmer. These customization options can be beneficial for those with neck pain, who will want a feel that accommodates their preferred sleeping posture and body type.

The WinkBed is also a great choice for couples. It has plenty of bounce, often preferred by sexually-active couples, and great edge support so you both can utilize the entire mattress.

What’s the WinkBed Made Of?

The WinkBed is 13.5 inches high and comes in four different firmness options: Softer, Luxury Firm, and Firmer. There’s also an option designed for folks over 200 pounds, the Plus model.

A Tencel® cover derived from Eucalyptus trees tops off the mattress for a soft, moisture-wicking sleep surface. Underneath is the Euro pillow top, quilted for cushioning support and outfitted with gel-infused foams for cooling. A few more layers of foam, including the LumbarLayer™ for lower back support, lead into the innerspring unit below.

WinkBeds Mattress Construction
The Winkbed is made up of both coils and foam, making it a hybrid bed

The coils in the WinkBed are individually wrapped and zoned for targeted pushback under the areas that need it most. They’re also reinforced along the edges for a stronger perimeter.

Our Take: “WinkBed should be a good option for couples thanks to its sturdy construction and reinforced edge coils that maximize sleep space.” – Sean, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What We Liked

  • Sturdy – We deemed this bed strong, sturdy, and durable. It should last you a long time without sagging from years of use.
  • Plenty of options – Sean noted that with the WinkBed, “people of all shapes and sizes and sleep habits should have something that caters to their direct needs.” With four different firmnesses (including one for plus-sized folks), this mattress arrives personalized to your tastes.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Not very soft – The WinkBed is a hybrid bed, so it’s not going to cradle you as well as an all-foam mattress. Our testers noticed more of a “gentle cradle,” but if you’re a dedicated side sleeper, it’s best you stick with the softest model.
  • Some motion transfers – Bounce often translates to lackluster motion isolation, and that’s the case for the WinkBed. Though the coils in the innerspring unit respond individually rather than as a connected unit, they won’t stifle the feeling of movement completely. Light sleepers who share the bed with a partner or pet may want to reconsider.

Customer Reviews of the Winkbed Mattress

On the WinkBeds site, the WinkBed earns a 4.8 out of 5 stars. One drawback of the WinkBed mattress is that it might be too expensive for budget-conscious shoppers, but overall it offers excellent durability and customizable firmness options.

Why the Titan Plus Luxe Earned Best Mattress for Heavy People with Neck Pain

A medium-firm mattress has the ideal feel for combating neck pain, but folks who weigh more than 200 pounds often have a tough time finding a bed that strikes this balance. Thankfully, the Titan Plus Luxe should have just the right amount of comfort and support.

Heavier sleepers should also appreciate the sturdy layers of this bed: Its high-density foams and individually wrapped coils ensure that sleepers won’t sink too far into the material and throw their spine out of alignment.

What’s the Titan Plus Luxe Made Of?

The Titan Plus Luxe is 13 inches tall and composed of five layers.

We start off with the quilted top layer of the mattress, made up of an inch of gel foam that combines cooling with pressure relief. Next up is the brand’s proprietary TitanFlex™ foam, which has a firmer, bouncier feel.

Then comes a layer of Energex™ foam, which allows for a deeper cushioning sink while still keeping you supported.

Dig deeper in the mattress construction of the Titan Plus Luxe

The innerspring layer of the mattress is made of strong, individually encased TitanCore™ coils. The edges are lined with more tightly wound coils to bolster the perimeter of the mattress. Finally, the dense foam base keeps the coils stable.

Our Take: “As a plus-sized individual myself, something that I really appreciated about this mattress was that it generously supported my weight.” – Sean, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What We Liked

  • Feels cool – This is a wonderful mattress for hot sleepers, as its foam is infused with cooling gel and its coils promote airflow. The last thing sleepers with neck pain need is the added discomfort of a mattress that sleeps hot.
  • Also works for smaller sleepers – If you and your partner are different sizes, you can rest easy knowing that the Titan Plus Luxe won’t feel uncomfortable for those who weigh less. Emma explained: “I’ve tried out a number of mattresses that are built for sleepers who are plus-sized, and generally I find that the mattresses are too firm for my body type and weight. However, the [Titan Plus Luxe] was not like that at all. I find myself very comfortable on this mattress.”

Potential Drawbacks

  • Gets expensive – With a name like “Luxe,” this mattress enters into the luxury category and therefore has a higher price range. If you’re on a budget, you might want to consider the original model, the Titan Plus, which comes at a lower cost.
  • Bulky – The Titan Plus Luxe is heavy and difficult to move by yourself, so we recommend calling someone in to help set it up.

Customer Reviews of the Titan Plus Luxe

Users on Titan by Brooklyn Bedding’s site have given the Titan Plus a 4.7 out of 5 stars. Customers find the Titan Plus mattress to offer exceptional durability and support, but some mention that it might be too firm for those who prefer a softer feel.

Why the Plank Firm Earned Best Firm Mattress for Neck Pain

If you’re coping with neck pain and prefer a more bracing surface to a pillowy one, the Plank Firm should be up your alley. It’s an exceptionally firm mattress with two sides, one of which is described as “ultra-firm” while the other has a “traditional firm” feel.

The firmer side has no loft to it for a truly floor-like experience, whereas the other side has just a bit of cushion.

What’s the Plank Firm Made Of?

The Plank is a flippable, all-foam bed that measures 9.5 inches tall. It’s bolstered by a 6-inch core of high-density foam, and features quilted tops on both its sides.

The extra-firm side only has this quilted top atop the foam core, resulting in no loft; but on the other side, there’s a 2-inch layer of firm TitanFlex™ foam for added responsiveness and a more typical “firm” sleep surface.

My Take: If you’re in the market for a truly firm mattress, there’s little that will compare to the Plank Firm. This mattress was inspired by the sleeping mats utilized in parts of Asia. It’s one of the firmest beds you can buy these days, and people who like unyielding support swear by it.

What I Liked

  • Flippable – Don’t feel like super-firm every night? No problem! Switch between extra-firm and regular-firm with ease thanks to the Plank’s flippable construction.
  • Firm enough for heavy folks – The Plank Firm has a firm enough feel to properly support folks who weigh more than 200 pounds. Stomach sleepers should also enjoy the lift it gives in the hips.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Too firm for some – When I say firm, I mean it. If you’re not prepared for a truly firm sleep experience, you should think twice about choosing the Plank.
  • Cooling costs extra – If you sleep hot and are set on the Plank, adding a cooling top to both sides of this mattress comes at an added fee.

Customer Reviews of the Plank Firm

On Plank’s website, the Plank Firm gets 4.8 out of 5 stars. Customers appreciate the Brooklyn Bedding Plank Firm mattress for its exceptional firmness, but some have found it to be too rigid for their comfort preferences.

Why the Nectar Earned Best Cheap Mattress for Neck Pain

Nectar is rated 6.5/10 on our firmness scale, so it should work well for multiple sleeping positions, supporting the neck and spine to reduce pressure around these points.

Nectar also offers good value for your money, keeping the price of their bed affordable while utilizing quality materials and allowing a year-long trial for you to test the mattress. This memory foam mattress is a good choice if you’re on a budget but still want your bed to last a long time.

What’s the Nectar Made Of?

The Nectar is 12 inches tall and has a total of five layers, including a cotton top cover and an anti-shift bottom cover. All foams in the Nectar are CertiPUR-US® certified.

The 2-inch top layer is made of gel-infused foam for cooling pressure relief. Next is a 3-inch layer of more responsive foam, which also provides motion-isolating capabilities. Then, the core of the mattress is made up of a 7-inch base layer that gives stability to the above layers.

My Take: Nectar has generous policies, and the price point is hard to beat. Importantly, its affordability doesn’t mean sacrificing quality—the Nectar is a solid choice that should last you for years.

What I Liked

  • Sturdier edges – Nectar is an all-foam mattress, and these tend to have saggy edges. But this bed has fairly good edge support, allowing you to sit or sleep near the perimeter without the sides collapsing.
  • Pressure relief star – Sleepers with sensitive joints should love the superb cushioning for common pressure points that the Nectar offers.

Potential Drawbacks

  • May get hot – Though the Nectar has some cooling gel infused in its top layer, it’s still an all-foam bed and thus prone to retaining heat. Hot sleepers should perhaps check out a hybrid option instead, as they’re more temperature-regulating.
  • Too soft for some – Stomach sleepers may not get the support they need in their hips from the Nectar. This is also true for heavier sleepers, who may sink too far into the foam layers.

Customer Reviews of Nectar mattress

With thousands of reviews on Nectar’s website, the Nectar mattress has an average 4.8 out of 5 stars. One common customer complaint about the Nectar mattress is its longer-than-average break-in period, while many customers praise its excellent value and comfort once fully settled.

Why the Saatva Classic Earned Best Innerspring Mattress for Neck Pain

The Saatva Classic has two height and three firmness options, allowing sleepers to customize the look and feel of the mattress. Its signature support system will stay the same no matter which firmness you choose, however, and should help to reduce back and neck pain by supporting proper spine alignment.

This bed is a unique innerspring option because it has not just one but two coil layers. The first coil unit has individually wrapped springs to isolate motion, which is great news for couples. The second coil unit has interconnected springs that increase the overall sturdiness and longevity of the bed.

What’s the Saatva Classic Made Of?

The Saatva Classic comes in three firmness options (Plush, Luxury Firm, and Firm) and two height options (11.5 inches and 14.5 inches).

It has a 3-inch pillow top for pressure relief protected by an organic cotton cover. Next, a memory foam “crown” stretched across the middle of the mattress supports the lumbar region.

The first coil layer includes shorter individually wrapped coils, including specialized Lumbar Zone® coils that also give a boost to the lower back. The second coil later contains stronger coils that form the durable and springy foundation of the mattress.

The inside of the Saatva Classic Mattress
Deep dive into the construction of the Saatva mattress

Within these two layers you can also find the proprietary Lumbar Zone® Active Spinal Wire, which promotes proper body alignment for the sleeper. Finally, the edges are reinforced with foam rails for a strong perimeter.

My Take: Saatva is a company synonymous with luxury and value, and their Classic model exudes both of these qualities.

What I Liked

Customizable – Sleepers can choose a firmness level based on their preference and pain severity. Luxury Firm or Firm may be best for neck pain because these models provide the most support. You can also pick between an 11.5-inch height or a 14-inch height model.
White glove delivery – Saatva offers free white glove delivery with all their mattresses, which means that they’ll send workers to your home to remove your old mattress and install your new one.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Returns cost extra – Unfortunately, despite offering free white glove delivery, it’ll cost you $99 to return your mattress if you decide it’s not for you. This is true even within the trial window.
  • Some motion transfer – Couples should be aware that the springiness of the Saatva classic means you’re likely to feel movement even from the other side of the bed.

Customer Reviews of the Saatva Classic

The Saatva Classic rates 4.8 stars out of 5 on Saatva’s website. One negative aspect customers found with the Saatva Classic mattress is that it may feel too firm for some users, while a notable advantage is its high-quality materials, providing durability and support.

Why the Bear Original Earned Best Mattress for Athletic People with Neck Pain

Athletic people need a supportive mattress that helps with pressure relief and post-workout recovery, especially if they’re also dealing with neck pain. The Bear Original mattress includes responsive layers and cooling materials that may help to alleviate pain and quicken your body’s recuperation.

The bed features gel memory foam to enhance cooling, making it easier for hot sleepers to fall and stay asleep. Pressure relief comes from the transition layer, followed by a high-density support layer that gives it durability and structure. For an extra fee, you can also have a performance textile called Celliant® added to the bed’s cover.

What’s the Bear Original Made Of?

The Bear Original has three foam layers measuring a total of 10 inches high. It’s topped off with a breathable Tencel™ cover.

The first layer is a gel-infused memory foam to promote spinal alignment and cooling. Next comes a layer of proprietary Bear Dynamic Foam that balances support and pressure relief. Lastly, a dense foam base rounds out the bed.

Our Take: “It’s a little firmer than the typical all-foam mattress, which should make it a little bit more versatile for different kinds of sleepers.” Stuart Petty, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What We Liked

  • Unique material – For an additional fee, the Bear Original comes with a Celliant® cover. This performance textile allegedly helps with muscle recovery as it pulls the heat away from your body, turning it into infrared energy.
  • Firm foams – Foam beds are usually on the softer side just because of their construction, but the Bear Original’s construction is surprisingly firm. This makes it versatile enough to suit a wide range of sleepers.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Not for all side sleepers – Our testers noticed the Bear Original felt a smidge too firm when they were lying on their sides. Stuart noted, “I’d prefer something with slightly more sink for my wider shoulders.”
  • Thinner profile – The Bear Original only stands 10 inches tall, so it’ll be close to the ground if you don’t have a platform base.

Customer Reviews of the Bear mattress

According to Bear’s website, the Bear Original scores about 4.5 out of 5 stars. Customers appreciate the Bear Original mattress for its excellent pressure relief but have reported that its edge support may be lacking, which could affect those who use the full mattress surface.

Why the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Earned Best Hybrid Mattress for Neck Pain

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid is available in three firmness options, and all three feature a layer of elastic comfort foam. This material combines the benefits of synthetic foams and latex to provide both responsiveness and contouring, a desirable mix for sleepers with neck pain.

The hybrid also features the brand’s proprietary VariFlex™ foam to further enhance support in all sleeping positions. The Medium and Firm models are best for stomach sleepers, but side sleepers will probably like the Soft model best.

What’s the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Made Of?

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid is 11.5 inches tall and has a total of five layers. It’s available in Soft, Medium, or Firm feels.

The pillow top of the mattress is quilted to keep you supported while preventing lasting indentations from your body weight. Underneath it is a layer of responsive and adaptable foam. Next is the VariFlex™ foam, which acts as a comfort layer before the coils. (The thickness of these layers depends on the model you choose.)

The fourth layer is the 8-inch coil unit, featuring individually wrapped Ascension® coils, followed by a high-density foam base.

Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Construction from the lab
The Signature Hybrid is built on 5 total layers

Our Take: “I like how firm this bed feels. It’s very supportive, which is great for back and stomach sleepers. It almost feels like the bed is lifting me up.” – Emma, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What We Liked

  • Super lifting – The lifted feeling that Emma noticed during testing should work great for folks who don’t want to feel “trapped” in their mattress. Stomach sleepers who need support in their hips should also appreciate this buoyancy.
  • Bouncy – The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid’s coils make this bed super springy, so it should be a great choice for restless sleepers or couples who value ease of movement.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Not the best pressure relief – This mattress has some foams, but not enough to counteract its distinctive hybrid feel. Side sleepers are unlikely to find the right amount of cradling they need for their pressure points, especially in the firmer models.
  • Simple – The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid is certainly an effective bed that hits all the marks for a basic hybrid, but it doesn’t have any other bells and whistles. If you’re looking for a bed with trendier features, look elsewhere.

Customer Reviews of the Signature Hybrid

On Brooklyn Bedding’s website, the Brooklyn Signature has 4.7 out of 5 stars. The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid mattress receives praise from customers for its versatility with different firmness options, but some have mentioned that it may produce slight noise when bearing weight.

Why the Birch Natural Earned Best Organic Mattress for Neck Pain

Medium-firm mattresses tend to be best for neck pain because they support the spine, but also cushion the shoulders and more sensitive joints. This balance keeps the neck well-aligned, helping to alleviate and prevent neck pain.

The Birch Natural is a medium-firm mattress that aims for the exact harmony described above.. But perhaps its biggest draw is its natural components, ranging from organic cotton and wool to Talalay latex.

What’s the Birch Natural Made Of?

The Birch Natural is 11 inches tall and has six layers, including its organic cotton cover.

The next layers underneath are made of organic wool: the first is for natural fire protection, and the second offers comforting support as well as temperature regulation. After that comes the natural Talalay latex layer, which provides bounce and pressure relief.

Then comes the coil layer. Its individually wrapped coils support your body and help to stifle motion Along the longer edges of the bed, the springs are reinforced to bolster the edges. Finally, everything sits on a base layer of wool.

Our Take: “This is a mattress that should work well for those who want a little more bounce and mobility, and those who prefer a more natural product.” – Stuart, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What We Liked

  • Certified safe – The Birch is GREENGUARD Gold, eco-INSTITUT, and Global Organic Textile Standard certified. So, you can literally rest assured that the Birch is free of harmful emissions and compounds.
  • A match for back sleepers – Back sleepers should especially love the balanced feel of this mattress, as it cushions the lumbar region and keeps the hips lifted.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Can get pricey – As is the case with most beds constructed with high-quality natural and organic ingredients, the Birch Natural will cost you a pretty penny. It’ll run you over $2,000 for a queen (but that’s before sales and coupons).
  • Not motion-isolating – The Birch Natural’s springy profile doesn’t lend itself well to dampening motion transfer across the mattress. If you’re a light sleeper, you’re likely to be woken up by your partner’s movements on the other side of the bed.

Customer Reviews of the Birch Natural

According to Birch’s website, the Birch Natural scores a 4.6 out of 5 stars. While some users consider the Birch Natural mattress to be on the pricier side, it gains customer appreciation for its organic materials and sustainable, eco-friendly construction.

What to Look for in a Mattress for Neck Pain

It would be great if there was a specific mattress that could alleviate your neck pain. In this case, you’ll have to consider factors unique to you, such as your body type and sleep position, and how they interact with different types of mattresses. Additionally, if you’re experiencing neck pain, you will want to look for a mattress that provides overall support and keeps your spine aligned. Categories such as durability, motion isolation, edge support, and more should be considered when you are searching for a mattress that can help with your neck pain.

Type of Mattress

Innerspring Mattresses

Innerspring beds can be highly supportive, which is great for body alignment. However, they don’t have the extra foams and cushioning that hybrids come with In the bedding industry, you’ll find four types of coils in innerspring mattresses: Bonnell, continuous, offset, and pocketed.

You can find quality mattresses featuring each of these types of coils, but if your budget allows, look for either offset or pocketed coils. These will provide the most durable structure and mimic the contouring effect of memory foam without the feeling of sinking into the surface of the bed.

The inside of the Saatva Classic Mattress
The Saatva Classic is an example of an innerspring mattress

Hybrid Mattresses

Hybrid beds can be any combination of materials. Usually, they’re a blend of coil construction and latex or memory foam — or both. If you’re on the fence about whether you should get a foam mattress or an innerspring bed, one of the best hybrid mattresses could be a happy compromise.

No matter what your sleeping position is, look for a quality core construction made from top-notch coils and a soft, but supportive upper layer.

Memory Foam Mattresses

If you’re a side sleeper or a back sleeper wanting a softer feel, you can start your search with a memory foam mattress. These may contour best to the shape of your body, preventing joint pain and promoting spinal alignment1.

Latex Mattresses

Latex has some of the same properties as memory foam, but instead of being made out of viscoelastic polyurethane foam, it’s the product of sap from a rubber tree. There are synthetic forms of latex that are less expensive, although they are made of chemical components.

The best latex mattresses are known to provide a cooler sleeping experience than memory foam, but they can be more expensive. It also provides more responsiveness, or bounce, making it great for those who want more mobility.

Other Considerations When Shopping for a Mattress for Neck Pain

Sleeping Position

Side sleepers may want to invest in a softer mattress that contours around their shoulders and hips to prevent pressure relief. However, if you sleep on your stomach, a bed that is relatively firm will keep your hips elevated and your spine aligned. Back sleepers usually need a bed that provides balanced support and this can typically be achieved with mid-level firmness.

Weight/Body Type of Sleepers

Usually, lightweight sleepers find that softer beds are optimal for them because these mattresses should provide pressure relief. Heavier sleepers, on the other hand, will probably want a firmer mattress. This is because people who weigh more can push through a bed’s comfort layer too quickly, and they may not receive the amount of support needed.

For average-weight sleepers, a bed with a medium firmness should strike the best balance between contouring and support.

Firmness

Although mattress firmness is subjective since beds can feel different to different body types, researchers have found that sleeping on a medium-firm mattress is most beneficial for back pain.1 While this data isn’t for the neck specifically, improved posture from a bed with the right feel for your body type and sleep position may also help with neck pain since poor posture2 is a cause of neck pain. What’s important when it comes to firmness, though, is that your bed feels comfortable and supportive to you.

Cooling

A bed’s ability to regulate your body temperature won’t directly affect your neck pain, but it can be a big contributor to your quality of sleep. When you are in pain, you don’t want to exacerbate your discomfort by overheating during the night.

Innerspring and hybrid mattresses tend to be cool because the coil design allows air to flow freely. Latex mattresses are also a good choice for temperature regulation. Although memory foam has a reputation for retaining heat, many manufacturers are now addressing this by adding cooling technologies to the foam.

Motion Isolation

A bed with good motion isolation minimizes the amount of movement that transfers from one side of the bed to the other. A mattress that absorbs your partner’s or pet’s twists and turns can allow you to sleep undisturbed throughout the night. In turn, this can keep you from repositioning frequently, which may help prevent neck pain.

Memory foam beds are often exemplary at isolating motion.

testing motion transfer on a mattress
I use a seismograph to measure the motion transfer of a mattress

Sex

Many people with neck pain are sexually active. However, to enjoy intimacy and prevent any additional neck pain, you will want to look for a responsive bed.

Latex, innerspring, and hybrid mattresses’ ability to regain their shape after weight is applied to them can be helpful for those who engage in sex. These beds can prevent you from feeling stuck when you are moving about and this may keep strain off your neck.

Support & Spine Alignment

Whether you sleep on your side, back, or stomach, it’s imperative that your spine stays in alignment. If your bed doesn’t provide adequate support3, your spine could either buckle or sink, both of which increase your chance of feeling pain in your neck.

Pressure Relief

When we talk about pressure relief, we’re referring to relieving pressure from the weight that your shoulders, torso, and hips put on the surface of the mattress. Ideally, your mattress should provide enough sinkage to allow your body to maintain a natural angle and feel comfortable.

Mattresses that are too hard won’t provide adequate pressure relief, and those that are too soft can cause you to sink too far into the material. Either way, your neck will be thrown out of alignment, and even if you have no underlying conditions, you can expect to wake up stiff and uncomfortable if you sleep on a bad bed for too long.

For More Information: Best Mattresses for Pressure Relief

Edge Support

If a bed sags or is otherwise unsupportive around the edges, it may make it hard to get into or out of bed. Lack of edge support can also make you feel as if you’re going to roll out of bed. If you’re experiencing neck pain, feeling as if you’re falling out of bed may cause you to jerk or jolt and this may increase your neck pain and disturb your sleep.

Look for innerspring and hybrid mattresses that have reinforced perimeter coils or foam beds that use stronger foams around the edges. These construction features can help ensure that you have proper support across the entire surface of the bed.

Durability

Most beds feel comfortable when you first buy them. They’ll feel soft and fluffy, like a cloud. However, fast forward five or 10 years, and you might have springs poking out, unraveling fabric, or severe indentations that make you feel like there’s a strong gravitational force pulling you through the center of the bed.

When you’re buying a new mattress, it’s a smart idea to weigh the cost of the bed versus its longevity. Mattresses that are built to last may cost more initially, but they’ll last longer and provide more years of comfort.

Budget

Budgets, like mattress preferences, can be varied. Fortunately, there are many options available in a variety of price ranges.

It is important to establish your budget prior to beginning your new mattress search. By establishing the amount you’re willing to spend from the beginning, you will be able to narrow down the mattresses that are most appealing to you within your price range.

What Causes Neck Pain?

Starting your day with mysterious neck pain is not what anyone dreams of. Although there are some factors, such as aging, that may cause neck pain, there are others that are within your control. To decrease your chances of experiencing neck pain through the night, you will want to pay attention to your sleep position and make sure that you have a mattress and pillows that will prohibit or alleviate neck pain at night4

How Can a Mattress Help with Neck Pain?

A mattress can help with neck pain by fostering good posture through a combination of optimal support and contouring. Poor posture is a cause of neck pain.2 Therefore, sleeping in a healthy alignment could help alleviate pain in the neck area.

What Is the Best Sleeping Position for Neck Pain?

Back Sleeping

People with neck pain often find relief by sleeping on their back5. This allows the neck to be at a neutral angle without twisting to the side. People who sleep on their backs should use a medium-loft pillow to prevent propping their heads up too much.

Side Sleeping

Julia Forbes testing a mattress in the side sleeper sleeping position
Julia testing each mattress to see how they perform for side sleepers and their necks.

Most people like sleeping on their side6 for at least some portion of the night. The most important thing to remember if you’re a side sleeper is to keep your neck and spine in proper alignment7.

In general, you should sleep on a pillow that’s thicker than what a stomach or back sleeper would use, but not so high that your neck is thrown out of whack. When you lie on your side, your spine, from the base of your skull down to your tailbone, should be in a straight line.

Learn more: How to Sleep on Your Side and Best Mattresses for Side Sleepers

Combination Sleeping

If you like to change positions during the night, you will want to find a mattress that is a good fit for all of your sleeping arrangements. This can be a little trickier than finding a suitable mattress if you sleep in one position throughout the night. However, a medium-firm bed is often a safe bet for those who turn throughout the night.

If you want to reposition more easily, you may want to consider a latex, hybrid, or innerspring mattress.

Stomach Sleeping

If you’ve got neck challenges, try to avoid sleeping on your stomach. When you lie on your stomach, you have to turn your head to the side, and if your pillow is too high, this creates an even worse angle for your head and neck.

For those who are unable to sleep in any other position than their stomach, there are a couple of tips that you can try:

  • Use a very thin pillow that keeps your neck relatively flat.
  • Avoid using a pillow at all and sleep directly on the sheet.
  • Use a good mattress for stomach sleeping.

The reason these tips can help is that they allow your neck to stay centered over your shoulders, and that’s one of the keys to preventing undue strain.

Wondering where to put your arms? Our recommendation is to raise them above your head, in either a field goal position, or cross them above your head with your hands touching opposite elbows.

Tips for Better Sleeping with Neck Pain

  • Invest in a new pillow – Pillows can play a large role in preventing neck pain. Different types of pillows may work for different types of sleepers. Feather pillows will conform to the shape of the neck, but won’t offer much support. Memory foam pillows may be a good fit because they will contour and cradle your head and neck.4
  • Avoid tall and/or firm pillows – These types of pillows can add strain to your neck which may lead to additional pain or stiffness.7
  • Add a mattress topper – Mattress toppers are a great way to add firmness to a mattress that is too soft or softens up an overly firm one. This can help those with neck pain find a more suitable firmness.
  • Try an adjustable base – Adjustable bed frames can be a great choice if you are experiencing neck pain. These bases allow you to modify the elevation of your upper back and head. Before purchasing an adjustable base, you will want to make sure that it is compatible with your mattress.

Best Mattress for Neck Pain FAQs

What type of mattress is best for neck pain?

Generally, medium-firm mattresses8 are considered the best for neck pain because they balance the cushioning needed to relieve pain with the support required for proper spinal alignment. Hybrid mattresses vary in firmness across the market, but they provide supportive coils and pressure-relieving foams that are likely to achieve this balanced feel for alleviating neck pain.

Can you sleep with a cervical collar?

Some medical conditions may require the use of a cervical collar. It looks like a soft, foam neck brace, and it’s comfortable enough to wear in bed.

However, use caution when wearing one of these. Abide by what your doctor prescribes for use and when to wear. Just like wearing a back brace for lifting, it can provide protection and support, but extended wear will weaken the muscles, making your neck pain problem even worse.

What are some quick tips to ease cervical stiffness?

Stretching exercises are a quick and effective way to ease cervical stiffness. Cleveland Clinic9 recommends the following four exercises, and they only take a few minutes:

  • Do 10 backward shoulder rolls.
  • Squeeze your shoulder blades together 10 times (push your chest out and squeeze backward).
  • Sitting in your car, push your head all the way back into the headrest and hold for 30 seconds. An alternative to this exercise is to tilt your head back and look at the sky, being careful not to overextend your neck to the point where it’s painful.
  • Tilt your head to the right side toward your ear and repeat 10 times. Switch sides, and do 10 repetitions on that side, too.

Another tip is to include the application of ice and heat. Start with ice for the first 48-72 hours after the first instance of stiffness, and then switch to heat after that.9

Can neck pain cause headaches?

Yes, some headaches are caused by neck pain. This is because the upper portion of the spinal column in the neck, or cervical spine, shares the same neural pathways as our head and face. This type of neck pain can result in something called a cervicogenic headache10.

A cervicgogenic headache11 originates with pain in the neck and can be a chronic, recurring pain issue that can result from moving the neck.
