Many mattress companies aim to improve sleep, but Bear stands alone in its journey to improve athletic performance through the materials in their mattresses.
Bear’s flagship model, the Bear Original, demonstrates the brand’s commitment to innovation by featuring Sleep Recover Technology™ in its Celliant® cover. This tech is designed to improve recovery for athletes, but how does it perform in other areas?
We peel back the layers of this memory foam mattress in our Bear mattress review. We’ll cover the healing technology and cooling features and let you know who we think would like this bed.

Who We Recommend The Bear Original For:
- Athletes – This mattress was made specifically for athletes and those who need to sleep well and wake up feeling ready to go. What stands out the most is the Celliant® cover that’s designed to enhance recovery for active consumers by transforming body heat into infrared energy. This may improve blood flow and reduce inflammation for these sleepers.
- People who sleep hot – With gel and graphite infused into the upper foam layers and cooling technology included in the cover, this mattress was designed to overcome traditional cooling issues associated with memory foam beds.
- Co-sleepers – If your partner gets up earlier than you do and you’re constantly waking up from movement, these foams should help isolate motion well, keeping you asleep longer.
Who We Don’t Recommend The Bear Original For:
- Heavy sleepers – People who weigh over 230 pounds may find this Bear mattress a bit too soft to adequately support the hips, especially when sleeping on their stomach. In other sleeping positions, the Bear Original may collapse under the weight, making it difficult to achieve proper spine alignment for heavy sleepers.
- Budget shoppers – Bear’s enhanced design could benefit many sleepers, but it also comes at a slightly higher price than competitors. Although selling directly to consumers helps keep costs down, the Bear mattress may still be out of range for some budget shoppers. That being said, the Bear Original is cheaper than the brand’s hybrid models.
First Impressions: Firmness & Feel
Firmness Scale: 6.5/10
Please remember that firmness is a subjective characteristic and your shape will dictate how you experience a bed. A heavier person whose weight can more easily push through softer comfort and support layers may experience a bed as softer than a lightweight person. The way you are shaped could also play a role here. Consider your weight, shape, and size when evaluating firmness scores.
When evaluating mattress firmness, we rank beds on a scale from 1 to 10, with 10 being the firmest. We rated the Bear mattress a 6.5 out of 10, which means it has a medium-firm feel.
This middle-of-the-road firmness level makes it a versatile bed that should feel comfortable in different sleeping positions. Since it’s near the middle of the scale, the Bear Original should provide sufficient pressure relief. However, it still offers enough firmness for some added support around the hips and shoulders.
This firmness level works best for average-weight people, lightweight back sleepers, and stomach sleepers who weigh under 200 pounds.
How Does It Feel?
When you first lie down on the Bear, you should notice that the soft Celliant® cover feels cool-to-the-touch and stretches tightly around the mattress. The cover isn’t removable but can be gently spot-cleaned.
You should also feel yourself nestled in a gentle cradle, distinct from most memory foam beds, as the lower layers provide a noticeable bounce.
What We Like About the Bear Original
- Performance materials – This Bear mattress has Celliant® technology infused in its cover. While there isn’t much research on the effectiveness of this material, the patented technology may improve your athletic performance, health, and sleep quality by enhancing tissue oxygen levels.
- Motion isolation – The Bear Original is an all-foam mattress, meaning it contains a mix of foams. This all-foam construction is also excellent at isolating movement, so you shouldn’t feel your partner tossing and turning.
- Contouring memory foam – The memory foam construction also provides gentle contouring that should offer sufficient pressure relief without making you feel trapped inside the mattress.
Our Bear Original Complaints
- Responsiveness is lacking – If you’re after a bouncy bed, you may not like how the Bear Original feels. While this mattress has some bounce to it, it doesn’t have the level of responsiveness combination sleepers or people with mobility issues need for easy transitions.
- Too firm for some side sleepers – Some side sleepers may find this Bear mattress a bit too firm to conform to their curves and relieve pressure in the hips, shoulder, and neck. This is especially the case for side sleepers who weigh under 170 pounds.
Testing the Bear Original Mattress: How it Performed
Sleep Advisor’s Testing Methodology
At Sleep Advisor, our mattress reviews are based on findings from in-person tests that allow us to have a genuine understanding of how the mattress feels and performs.
Testing the Bear Original mattress allowed us to judge how the bed feels in various sleeping positions. Although its firmness can be considered versatile, some may still find it too firm or too soft, depending on their preferred sleeping position.
Apart from testing the overall feel, we also focused on how the bed isolates motion, supports the heaviest body parts, and relieves pressure in sensitive areas.
Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types
The Bear Original mattress doesn’t have a weight limit, but this doesn’t mean it can handle an infinite amount of weight. Since it’s an all-foam bed with a 10-inch profile, we’d say it’s not the best choice for heavyweight sleepers. Although a heavier sleeper who prefers a softer mattress may still like it, most folks over 230 pounds should find it lacking in support.
Side Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight side sleepers may prefer a bit more sinkage which would allow for better pressure relief in this position. The Bear Original is likely too firm for this group of sleepers.
- Average Weight Sleepers – Side sleepers who weigh 130 to 230 pounds may experience slightly different firmness levels depending on their exact weight. Those closer to 230 pounds should still sleep “on” the mattress but shouldn’t experience any pressure build-up thanks to the upper comfort layers.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavy side sleepers should sink deeper into the mattress, especially in the hip area. Although this is typically good for pressure relief, it may throw your spine out of alignment, which can cause lower back pain.
Weight | Side Sleepers | Back Sleepers | Stomach Sleepers |
---|---|---|---|
Lightweight Sleepers (-130 lbs) | ★☆☆ | ★★☆ | ★★☆ |
Average-Weight Sleepers (130-230 lbs) | ★★☆ | ★★★ | ★★☆ |
Heavyweight Sleepers (+230 lbs) | ★☆☆ | ★★☆ | ☆☆☆ |
Back Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight back sleepers should get sufficient support with enough pressure relief. The bed should feel especially comfortable to those who prefer a firmer bed.
- Average Weight Sleepers – Average-weight back sleepers should get enough sinkage and support to keep the body aligned while still enjoying pressure relief in the hip and shoulder area.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavy back sleepers should like the Bear’s firmness and feel, although some may experience the mattress as even softer, depending on their exact weight.
Stomach Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight stomach sleepers are better off sleeping “on” the mattress instead of “in” it because this position typically requires more support. The Bear feels nice on the stomach, but these sleepers may want a bit more sinkage for pressure relief in the shoulder area.
- Average Weight Sleepers – Stomach sleepers who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds should like how this bed feels on the stomach. Those closer to 200 pounds may experience more sinkage and better pressure relief.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavy stomach sleepers should consider the Bear Hybrid since the Original may be too soft to handle their weight and provide sufficient support.
Pressure Relief & Pain
The Bear Original’s top layer of gel memory foam should deliver the majority of pressure relief. Furthermore, the graduated firmness levels progressing downward should provide a comfortable feel as you ease into the sturdy support system at the base of the bed.
This mattress should suit many people and allow for gentle contouring of the shoulders, hips, and knees while sleeping. However, lightweight folks may not find sufficient pressure relief, especially those who prefer sleeping on their side.
Back Pain – Sleepers with back pain should like the Bear’s medium-firm feel as it provides solid levels of support in the lower and upper back areas. The gel memory foam layer allows gentle contouring to prevent the pressure from building up, while the sturdy high-density foam base ensures the hips are aligned with the rest of the body to prevent lower back pain.
Hip Pain – People with hip pain may find this mattress too firm, especially if they usually sleep on their side. While it does allow some contouring, the Bear Original doesn’t allow too much sinkage to relieve the pressure for those sleeping with hip pain.
Shoulder Pain – The Bear Original may help with pain relief in the shoulder area, but only if you’re a back sleeper. Side sleepers are likely to find the bed too firm as it doesn’t allow too much contouring in this position, which can exacerbate shoulder pain, especially for those who weigh under 130 pounds.
Support
There’s a reason why you’d be hard-pressed to find a bed made completely of memory foam or another pressure-relieving material, and that reason is gravity. Overnight, your body will be pulled gently toward the ground, and without the right type of support, you’d bottom out on the mattress, nullifying any pressure relief. This lack of support could result in back pain either emerging or worsening.
Luckily, with the Bear mattress, the three layers of medium-firm foam help the bed maintain its structure and keep your body in proper alignment without causing a build-up of pressure.
Motion Transfer
Motion transfer can be a serious issue for couples and co-sleepers, preventing them from getting a good night’s sleep. Luckily, the Bear Original does a good job of isolating motion, as it’s made entirely out of foam. The high-density foams used in this mattress absorb motion, preventing it from transferring from one side of the bed to the other. This should do wonders for partners with different sleeping habits and people who share their mattress with kids or pets.
Temperature Regulation / Cooling
The Bear Original should work well for hot sleepers as it has multiple cooling features that may help prevent sweating. Although this bed is made of high-density foam, the Bear Original is unlikely to overheat thanks to its topmost layer of gel-infused memory foam. This layer draws body heat away from you to prevent overheating and sweating. In addition, the Celliant® technology keeps the bed’s surface cool-to-the-touch while the open-cell structure of the foams promotes plenty of airflow.
Performance for Couples
Couples looking for a comfortable mattress that isolates motion and offers sturdy support should like the Bear Original mattress. The bed should work well for those who bunk with a restless sleeper or one that likes switching positions throughout the night. While it does have average edge support if you sit on the edge, lying near the edge should make you feel well-supported, which allows couples to use the entire surface of the bed. However, it does lack bounce, which some sexually-active couples may find to be a con.

Made in the USA
Construction: What’s Inside the Bear Original?
The Bear Original features an all-foam design. This bed should be used on a solid, flat surface and is compatible with an adjustable base.
The cover is a major selling point for buyers because of the innovative materials used to create it. The company uses Celliant® technology that may convert energy from the body into infrared light to help aid recovery.
At 10 inches tall, the bed gradually transitions from soft to firmer layers from the top down.
- A breathable quilt cover starts this mattress off. This cover contains Bear’s proprietary Sleep Recover Technology™ which uses Celliant® to promote recovery.
- The top foam layer of the Bear Original is two inches of memory foam. Memory foam is popular in the bedding industry because of its top-notch pressure-relieving capabilities, and Bear infuses it with graphite gel to prevent it from becoming too hot.
- The transition layer is a 2-inch layer of poly foam. This foam provides a balance of added pressure relief and support while serving as a transitional layer between the top comfort foam and the dense support foam below.
- The base layer is made up of six inches of poly foam, which acts as the main support unit of this bed. The foam here is highly dense to help ensure the spine stays well-aligned. The support core also gives the mattress its durability for long-lasting use.
Unboxing & Off-Gassing
The Bear Original mattress comes wrapped and packed into a box, so it’s easy to move around. You should place the package on your foundation of choice before cutting the plastic wrapping and allowing the bed to unroll. The mattress takes about 24 hours to fully expand, so it’s best to wait before sleeping on it. Although you can sleep on it right away, you’re unlikely to get the same quality of performance before the bed reaches its full size.
When it comes to odors, you’ll probably notice some off-gassing common for bed-in-a-box mattresses. Luckily, the foams in this bed are CertiPUR-US® certified, so the odors you notice aren’t harmful. Plus, they should dissipate by the time the bed expands and is ready to sleep.
Certifications
- Eco-Friendly Certifications – This product has a GREENGUARD Gold certification that reflects the product’s ability to meet some of the world’s most rigorous emissions standards. In addition, the foams in this bed are CertiPUR-US® certified. CertiPUR-US® is a third-party program that ensures the foams meet rigorous health and safety standards. This means they don’t contain harmful substances like ozone depleters, PBDEs, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and phthalates. They should also have low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.
Coupons, Trials, Warranties, and Shipping
- Shipping – The Bear Mattress ships free, rolled up, and compressed into a box across the continental U.S. Shipping to Alaska and Hawaii is available for an additional fee.
- Trial – With a 120-night sleep trial, the company gives you plenty of time to decide if their flagship mattress is right for you.
- Warranty – This bed has a lifetime warranty.
- Return Policy – Returns are free within the trial period, which means no refund is available after the 120-night trial is up.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Bear Original good for back pain?
The Bear Original mattress is a good option for people with back pain as it has a medium-firm feel that prevents excess sinkage. This means you’re more “on” the mattress than “in” it, which should promote spine alignment, especially for those who prefer sleeping on their back.
Where is the Bear Original from?
Bear makes its mattresses in the US, and the Original mattress is no exception. The beds are designed and manufactured in the US, which allows free and fast shipping and returns.
How long does the Bear Original last?
Like most memory foam beds, the Bear Original should last eight to ten years with proper use. One way to prolong its lifespan is to prevent your kids from jumping on it. In addition, it also helps to rotate the bed once or twice a year to ensure it wears out evenly.

Overall Summary
Bear’s flagship model was created with athletes in mind. With its pressure-relieving, all-foam design and innovative sleep tech, we’d say they succeeded.
Side Sleepers
4/5
Starting with a memory foam top layer and graduated firmness descending downward, this bed should be suitable for a variety of side sleepers. Most sleepers should benefit from the plush top, reaching more support as they sink into the layers. Some side sleepers may prefer more softness, though.
Back Sleepers
5/5
At a medium firmness level, this bed should be soft enough for those who like to sink in and firm enough for those who need extra support while sleeping on their back. With graduated firmness levels, it should allow the hips and shoulders to receive proper support without creating pressure points.
Stomach Sleepers
4/5
Most stomach sleepers should be comfortable sleeping on the Bear mattress, as it has enough support to keep the spine aligned without feeling hard as a rock. However, heavier sleepers may consider the Bear Elite Hybrid if they sleep primarily on their stomachs.
Combination Sleepers
4/5
This bed is versatile enough for most sleeping positions, and it should suit a variety of body types. The foam layer under the initial memory foam responds well to movement so most combo sleepers should be able to reposition and move around in their sleep without waking up. However, some might prefer the extra bounce of the hybrid.
Couples
4/5
With a medium-firm feel and good motion isolation from the all-foam design, this should be a great choice for most couples. People who sleep with a partner often enjoy beds that isolate motion well so they’re less likely to be disturbed by the other person’s movements. However, while this bed should provide decent edge support, it won’t have as much as the brand’s hybrid models.
Heavy Sleepers
3/5
The Bear mattress doesn’t have a specific weight limit, as it was made to suit a wide variety of sleepers, but some heavier folks may prefer firmer support from the company’s hybrid mattresses. That being said, some heavier side sleepers might do well on the Bear Original since they can get more pressure relief from this model.
Lightweight Sleepers
4/5
Lightweight sleepers should benefit from the Bear’s memory foam on the surface and from the graduated foam layers deeper in the bed. While the medium-firm feel could work for lighter stomach and back sleepers, it may be too hard for those who exclusively rest on their sides.
Average Weight Sleepers
5/5
Average-weight sleepers should like how the Bear Original feels in various positions, especially when sleeping on their back. The upper foam allows a bit of contouring to prevent pressure build-up, while the lower layers support the body and prevent it from sinking too deeply within the construction.
Overall Value
4/5
The Bear Original is versatile enough for most sleepers and includes some advanced elements, such as a Celliant® cover and graphite gel memory foam. With good support and plenty of pressure relief, this should be a worthwhile investment for most sleepers.
Our Verdict
The Bear Original mattress is an innovative bed created for hot sleepers and athletes, as it aims to provide cooling and muscle recovery. The Celliant® technology and gel-infused foam may reduce sweating at night and enhance muscle recovery.
Average-weight people should benefit from the medium-firm feel the most, although the bed is also a good fit for some lightweight and heavyweight sleepers, depending on their preferred sleeping position.
The one group that’s probably not a great fit for this mattress are heavyweight stomach sleepers. Due to its all-foam design, the Bear may be lacking in the support department which is crucial for these sleepers.
