This middle-of-the-road firmness level makes it a versatile bed that should feel comfortable in different sleeping positions. Since it’s near the middle of the scale, the Bear Original should provide sufficient pressure relief. However, it still offers enough firmness for some added support around the hips and shoulders.
This firmness level works best for average-weight people, lightweight back sleepers, and stomach sleepers who weigh under 200 pounds.
How Does It Feel?
When you first lie down on the Bear, you should notice that the soft Celliant® cover feels cool-to-the-touch and stretches tightly around the mattress. The cover isn’t removable but can be gently spot-cleaned.
You should also feel yourself nestled in a gentle cradle, distinct from most memory foam beds, as the lower layers provide a noticeable bounce.
What We Like About the Bear Original
- Performance materials – This Bear mattress has Celliant® technology infused in its cover. While there isn’t much research on the effectiveness of this material, the patented technology may improve your athletic performance, health, and sleep quality by enhancing tissue oxygen levels.
- Motion isolation – The Bear Original is an all-foam mattress, meaning it contains a mix of foams. This all-foam construction is also excellent at isolating movement, so you shouldn’t feel your partner tossing and turning.
- Contouring memory foam – The memory foam construction also provides gentle contouring that should offer sufficient pressure relief without making you feel trapped inside the mattress.
Our Bear Original Complaints
- Responsiveness is lacking – If you’re after a bouncy bed, you may not like how the Bear Original feels. While this mattress has some bounce to it, it doesn’t have the level of responsiveness combination sleepers or people with mobility issues need for easy transitions.
- Too firm for some side sleepers – Some side sleepers may find this Bear mattress a bit too firm to conform to their curves and relieve pressure in the hips, shoulder, and neck. This is especially the case for side sleepers who weigh under 170 pounds.

Testing the Bear Original mattress allowed us to judge how the bed feels in various sleeping positions. Although its firmness can be considered versatile, some may still find it too firm or too soft, depending on their preferred sleeping position.
Apart from testing the overall feel, we also focused on how the bed isolates motion, supports the heaviest body parts, and relieves pressure in sensitive areas.
Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types
The Bear Original mattress doesn’t have a weight limit, but this doesn’t mean it can handle an infinite amount of weight. Since it’s an all-foam bed with a 10-inch profile, we’d say it’s not the best choice for heavyweight sleepers. Although a heavier sleeper who prefers a softer mattress may still like it, most folks over 230 pounds should find it lacking in support.
Side Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight side sleepers may prefer a bit more sinkage which would allow for better pressure relief in this position. The Bear Original is likely too firm for this group of sleepers.
- Average Weight Sleepers – Side sleepers who weigh 130 to 230 pounds may experience slightly different firmness levels depending on their exact weight. Those closer to 230 pounds should still sleep “on” the mattress but shouldn’t experience any pressure build-up thanks to the upper comfort layers.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavy side sleepers should sink deeper into the mattress, especially in the hip area. Although this is typically good for pressure relief, it may throw your spine out of alignment, which can cause lower back pain.

- Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavy back sleepers should like the Bear’s firmness and feel, although some may experience the mattress as even softer, depending on their exact weight.
Stomach Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight stomach sleepers are better off sleeping “on” the mattress instead of “in” it because this position typically requires more support. The Bear feels nice on the stomach, but these sleepers may want a bit more sinkage for pressure relief in the shoulder area.
- Average Weight Sleepers – Stomach sleepers who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds should like how this bed feels on the stomach. Those closer to 200 pounds may experience more sinkage and better pressure relief.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavy stomach sleepers should consider the Bear Hybrid since the Original may be too soft to handle their weight and provide sufficient support.
Pressure Relief & Pain
The Bear Original’s top layer of gel memory foam should deliver the majority of pressure relief. Furthermore, the graduated firmness levels progressing downward should provide a comfortable feel as you ease into the sturdy support system at the base of the bed.
This mattress should suit many people and allow for gentle contouring of the shoulders, hips, and knees while sleeping. However, lightweight folks may not find sufficient pressure relief, especially those who prefer sleeping on their side.
Back Pain – Sleepers with back pain should like the Bear’s medium-firm feel as it provides solid levels of support in the lower and upper back areas. The gel memory foam layer allows gentle contouring to prevent the pressure from building up, while the sturdy high-density foam base ensures the hips are aligned with the rest of the body to prevent lower back pain.
Hip Pain – People with hip pain may find this mattress too firm, especially if they usually sleep on their side. While it does allow some contouring, the Bear Original doesn’t allow too much sinkage to relieve the pressure for those sleeping with hip pain.
Shoulder Pain – The Bear Original may help with pain relief in the shoulder area, but only if you’re a back sleeper. Side sleepers are likely to find the bed too firm as it doesn’t allow too much contouring in this position, which can exacerbate shoulder pain, especially for those who weigh under 130 pounds.
Support
There’s a reason why you’d be hard-pressed to find a bed made completely of memory foam or another pressure-relieving material, and that reason is gravity. Overnight, your body will be pulled gently toward the ground, and without the right type of support, you’d bottom out on the mattress, nullifying any pressure relief. This lack of support could result in back pain either emerging or worsening.
Luckily, with the Bear mattress, the three layers of medium-firm foam help the bed maintain its structure and keep your body in proper alignment without causing a build-up of pressure.
Motion Transfer
Motion transfer can be a serious issue for couples and co-sleepers, preventing them from getting a good night’s sleep. Luckily, the Bear Original does a good job of isolating motion, as it’s made entirely out of foam. The high-density foams used in this mattress absorb motion, preventing it from transferring from one side of the bed to the other. The Bear Original should work well for hot sleepers as it has multiple cooling features that may help prevent sweating. Although this bed is made of high-density foam, the Bear Original is unlikely to overheat thanks to its topmost layer of gel-infused memory foam. This layer draws body heat away from you to prevent overheating and sweating. In addition, the Celliant® technology keeps the bed’s surface cool-to-the-touch while the open-cell structure of the foams promotes plenty of airflow.
Performance for Couples
Couples looking for a comfortable mattress that isolates motion and offers sturdy support should like the Bear Original mattress. The bed should work well for those who bunk with a restless sleeper or one that likes switching positions throughout the night. While it does have average edge support if you sit on the edge, lying near the edge should make you feel well-supported, which allows couples to use the entire surface of the bed. However, it does lack bounce, which some sexually-active couples may find to be a con.
