Our Nolah Signature Mattress Review for 2024

Last Updated on November 20, 2023

Written by Sosha Lewis

To answer these questions, Nolah collaborated with sleep experts and devoted themselves to learning everything they could about the science of sleep. The result? Nolah’s dream bed, aka their Signature 12-inch model. The mattress features Nolah’s proprietary AirFoam™, as well as memory foam, organic cotton, and knitted poly-yarn for a unique, pressure-relieving construction.

Our Nolah Signature mattress review explores the company’s exclusive foam and how this mattress differs from the Nolah Original model. In addition, you’ll find ratings based on cooling, edge support, value, and more.

Who We Recommend the Nolah Signature For:

  • Pressure relief seekers – The Nolah Signature is designed to maximize pressure relief by adding as much as 75 percent more AirFoam™ than its predecessor, the Nolah Original. According to Nolah, the Signature provides 40 percent more full-body pressure relief.

  • Side sleepers – Most side sleepers should find the deep cradle and enhanced pressure relief offers a comfortable experience that removes pressure from heavier areas like the hips and shoulders.

  • Hot sleepers – The company’s proprietary cooling Nolah AirFoam™ doesn’t contain any viscoelastic chemicals. It should prevent the foam from heating up when it comes into contact with body heat, helping you stay cool throughout the night.

Who We Don’t Recommend the Nolah Signature For:

  • Those who prefer a firmer mattress – The Nolah Signature could prove too soft for those who prefer the feel of a firmer mattress, such as back and stomach sleepers. As a result, these shoppers may gravitate toward a different model, such as the Nolah Evolution.

  • Heavyweight sleepers – The Nolah Signature may not provide the best support for heavyweight sleepers since it’s a softer mattress. These folks typically need a firmer, more sturdy mattress to maintain a healthy sleeping posture.

First Impressions: Firmness & Feel

Firmness Scale: 4/10 (Soft)

Please remember that firmness is a subjective characteristic and your shape will dictate how you experience a bed. A heavier person whose weight can more easily push through softer comfort and support layers may experience a bed as softer than a lightweight person. The way you are shaped could also play a role here. Consider your weight, shape, and size when evaluating firmness scores.

One of the most important aspects to consider when buying a mattress is its firmness. In case you’re unsure of what mattress firmness means, it simply refers to how firm or soft the mattress feels when you’re lying on top of it.

The Nolah Signature is classified as a soft mattress. We rated it a 4 out of 10 on our firmness scale, where 1 is super soft and 10 is extra firm. Firmer mattresses often offer more support and prevent areas of the body from sagging, whereas soft mattresses such as the Nolah Signature perform better in pressure relief and offer a gentle cradling sensation. Lightweight sleepers and average-weight sleepers who rest on their sides should fare well on this mattress.

How Does It Feel?

As you sink into the Nolah Signature’s surface, you should immediately notice its soft, cloud-like feel. The cover is a luxurious quilted cotton cover that should feel cool-to-the-touch. As you settle into the bed, you should then feel a plush layer of cooling AirFoam™ that gently cradles your body. As you reposition or move around the bed, you should also feel the mattress bounce back against your movements. Although the Nolah Signature is made entirely of foam, it has an inherently bouncy feel rather than the slow sinking sensation memory foam is known for.

What We Like About the Nolah Signature

  • Cloud-like feel – Two of our four testers compared the comforting softness of this bed to a cloud.
  • Excellent for side sleepers – This mattress focuses on pressure relief which makes it a good choice for people who rest on their side.
  • Plenty of bounce – The high bounce of the Nolah Original should make it easy to reposition and change positions.

Our Nolah Signature Complaints

  • Lacks edge support – The Nolah Signature’s edges aren’t particularly sturdy. Edge support helps you get more use out of the entire mattress, so Nolah’s lack of sturdiness could be problematic for couples or others who utilize the sides of the bed.
  • Too soft for some sleepers – The softness of this bed may not provide some sleepers, particularly heavyweight folks and stomach sleepers, with adequate support or spinal alignment.
  • Gets softer over time – This mattress will get softer over time. This is something to keep in mind if you don’t want your mattress to get any softer.

Testing the Nolah Signature: How it Performed

The Nolah Signature mattress was tested by four of our Sleep Advisor teammates. These sleepers represent different body types and sleep position preferences, so they made notes about how this mattress performed for them specifically. We also tested qualities such as motion isolation, edge support, and temperature regulation.

Testing the Nolah Signature mattress in our facility.

Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types

According to Nolah, the Signature mattress can hold 300 pounds per side for a total of 600 pounds for the Queen, King and Cali King sizes. While this weight capacity should support most sleepers, the Nolah’s softer feel still makes it less than ideal for heavyweight sleepers.

Side Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – This group of sleepers should relish in the plush, soft, and pressure-relieving properties of the Nolah Signature.
  • Average-weight Sleepers – Those of average-weight who sleep on their sides should find that this mattress provides plenty of comfort and relief around their shoulders and hips.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Folks who are heavier may find that this mattress is not supportive enough for them. As a result, they may sink too far down in the bed, which can throw the spine out of alignment.

Back Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – This group of sleepers should relish in the plush, soft, and pressure-relieving properties of the Nolah Signature.
  • Average-weight Sleepers – Those of average-weight who sleep on their sides should find that this mattress provides plenty of comfort and relief around their shoulders and hips.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Folks who are heavier may find that this mattress is not supportive enough for them. As a result, they may sink too far down in the bed, which can throw the spine out of alignment.

Stomach Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Petite sleepers who prefer to snooze on their stomachs should feel that their hips are supported while their chest and shoulders enjoy a good bit of pressure relief.
  • Average-weight Sleepers – Many average-weight stomach sleepers may find that the softness of this mattress doesn’t provide adequate support to keep their hips raised and spine in line. While some may enjoy how the softer feel cushions their chest and shoulders, most folks in this group may need a firmer mattress.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavyweight stomach sleepers may quickly push through the upper layers of this mattress, which could leave them feeling stuck and unsupported.

Pressure Relief & Pain

If you’re feeling achy and sore after waking up on your old mattress, pressure relief is probably your top priority. The Nolah Signature puts pressure relief at the top of its list through the generous use of AirFoam™. The upper layer of AirFoam™ provides a plush feel that should conform around your curves, while the slightly firmer AirFoam™ layer further below should give you deeper relief along pressure points.

Back Pain – The contouring nature of the Nolah’s foam should make it a good choice for lightweight to average-weight sleepers who experience back pain. Still, some sleepers – particularly those on the heavier side – may need a firmer mattress that provides better support for spine alignment.

Hip Pain – Hip pain is often caused from inadequate support or pressure relief around the hips and lower body. This mattress should do a great job of relieving hip pain for lightweight and average-weight sleepers. However, heavier folk may need something more supportive.

Shoulder Pain – Side sleepers who wake with shoulder pain should find that this mattress helps eliminate that issue, especially if they are light to average-weight. Heavier folks may sink too deeply into this mattress, which could exacerbate any existing shoulder pain.

Support

In addition to pressure relief, you also need solid support to remain comfortable, which is where a high-density foam comes in. The thick support core in the bottom layer of the Nolah Signature promotes spine support and minimizes the risk of back pain.

Traditionally, memory foam does not have a lot of bounce. However, Nolah uses proprietary foams that are pressure blasted and contain inner air pockets. This process provides a traditional latex feel, but with even more bounce. The bounce aids in support by preventing you from feeling stuck in the mattress when repositioning.

Motion Transfer

Motion isolation is ideal for co-sleepers or those who share their mattress with children and pets. While there is a little more bounce than traditional memory foam, thanks to the latex-like nature of the AirFoam™, the material should do a decent job at preventing motion from traveling throughout the bed. Most couples should be happy with the amount of motion transfer in this mattress, although light sleepers may prefer a memory foam mattress for even greater motion isolation.

Testing it see if the Nolah Signature mattress is good for stomach sleepers.

Temperature Regulation / Cooling

Nolah claims that their AirFoam™ is 100 percent temperature-neutral because it prevents heat retention. Plus, it has a moisture-wicking cotton cover that draws heat away from the body. All in all, it should help you sleep cool, i.e no more waking up with night sweats.

Performance for Couples

Couples considering a mattress, should look for a combination of features like bounce, support, motion isolation, and cooling. The Nolah Signature has exceptional bounce which should benefit sexually-active couples and those who like to switch positions at night. For partners who bunk with a restless sleeper, the Nolah Signature’s motion isolation abilities should help them rest undisturbed.

However, for couples who want to utilize the entire mattress, the Nolah’s lackluster edge support may be a turnoff.

Preference-based Features

Bed-in-a-box

The Nolah Signature is compressed, rolled into a box, and shipped to your door. The set-up is relatively easy and takes only a few hours for the bed to inflate to the point that it is ready for you to sleep on it.

Charitable Initiatives

Nolah adopts an animal in need with each mattress sale. Buyers may choose their preferred animal from a list provided with their purchase. Nolah also donates and recycles mattresses returned to the company.

Compatible with All Bed Frames

This mattress can be used with box springs, adjustable bases, slatted bases, and platforms. Please note that if you use a box spring or slatted base, it is recommended that the slates be no more than 5 inches apart.

Handcrafted in the USA

All Nolah Signature mattresses are manufactured and shipped from factories in the United States.

Construction: What’s Inside the Nolah Signature?

The Signature’s top features a luxury cotton cover that should feel soft and cool-to-the-touch. It’s also moisture-wicking, which enhances the cooling effect even more. At a total height of 12 inches, the signature contains four layers in total.

  • The first comfort layer is 2.5 inches of Cooling Nolah AirFoam™. You should find yourself feeling cool and comfortable on this proprietary foam. It lies right under the cotton cover, contouring to your body and adapting to your shape regardless of the sleeping position you prefer.
  • The second comfort layer is made up of 1.5 inches of Deep Supportive High-Resilience Foam. This layer is designed for bounce, which should help with repositioning and getting in and out of bed.
  • The support layer is an inch of AirFoam™. This AirFoam™ layer is firmer than the topmost layer and designed to provide enhanced pressure relief for your most sensitive areas.
  • The base is a 7-inch high-density foam core. This layer provides support and structure for the entire mattress construction.

Unboxing & Off-Gassing

Your Nolah Signature mattress will arrive in a distinctive blue box. Once you bring the box inside, open the top and slide out the compressed, plastic covered mattress. Once you carefully remove the plastic, the mattress should start to inflate. As this happens, you may notice a chemical smell emanating from the mattress. Although unpleasant, the smell is harmless and should dissipate within 24-hours.

Certifications

  • CertiPUR-US® Certified – The foams in this bed are CertiPUR-US® certified. CertiPUR-US® is a third-party program that ensures the foams meet rigorous health and safety standards. This means they don’t contain harmful substances like ozone depleters, PBDEs, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and phthalates. They should also have low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.

Coupons, Trials, Warranties, and Shipping

  • Shipping – Nolah ships for free within the continental United States. Once shipped, you will receive a notification with your FedEx tracking number.
  • Trial – Shoppers can get a feel for their Nolah mattress for up to 120 nights. The first 30 nights is the so-called break-in period, while the remaining 90 days is when you can return the mattress if you don’t like it.
  • Warranty – The company offers a lifetime warranty, which covers manufacturing defects and faulty materials. The warranty doesn’t cover damage caused by normal wear and tear and misuse.
  • Returns – You can return your Nolah mattress after a minimum of 30 days, which is typically how long it takes for your body to adapt to a new bed. Then, if you still don’t like it, you can return it for a full refund, less a $99 transportation fee.

Overall Summary

The Nolah Signature takes attributes from the flagship Nolah Original, but expands on them to provide even deeper pressure relief and better cooling abilities. This soft mattress offers a pressure-relieving, yet bouncy sleep experience for a unique feel that rivals other latex and all-foam beds.

Side Sleepers

4/5

Most side sleepers should enjoy the enhanced pressure relief offered by the addition of extra proprietary foam. As a result of this emphasis on pressure relief, the Signature should help eliminate aches and pains from pressing the shoulders and hips into the mattress as you sleep.

Back Sleepers

4/5

Back sleepers should appreciate the thicker support core, which should give them better support and spine alignment in this position. Plus, the pressure-relieving features should keep their heavier areas comfortable. Some average-size and heavier back sleepers, though, may prefer a firmer hybrid model with coils for greater support.

Stomach Sleepers

3/5

The thicker support core should enhance the sleep experience for some stomach sleepers, but many may find this mattress is too soft to provide adequate support. For example, lightweight individuals should do okay in this position, but average and heavier stomach sleepers may find the Signature is too soft for their taste.

Combination Sleepers

4/5

The Signature’s responsiveness could benefit many combination sleepers who regularly change positions since it should help them reposition more easily. Most combo sleepers who rotate between their back and side should be fine. The bed’s supportive foam gives it enough bounce to help you change positions easily.

Couples

4/5

If you’re sharing a bed with a partner, you should love the motion-isolating foams and bouncy feel. Furthermore, if you both require good pressure relief, this could be a great match. However, some heavier couples may not feel supported enough by the softer feel of this bed.

Heavy Sleepers

3/5

Most people who carry extra weight prefer firm mattresses since these beds don’t make them feel like they are sinking too deep into the layers and feeling stuck. Sinking too much also puts their spine in poor alignment, increasing their risk of back pain. We would advise heavier sleepers to check out the firm version of the Nolah Evolution hybrid bed.

Lightweight Sleepers

5/5

The Signature should feel excellent for lightweight sleepers, as the foams easily compress so that these sleepers feel both the comfort and support layers. The softer firmness level, which typically works well for lightweight sleepers, should also add to the appeal of this bed. With extra emphasis on targeted pressure relief, light sleepers should feel that their curves are nicely cradled.

Average Weight Sleepers

4/5

Many average-weight sleepers will likely find that the Nolah Signature provides them with good support and ample pressure relief in all preferred sleep positions. However, some average-weight sleepers may find that this softer mattress doesn’t provide enough support.

Overall Value

4/5

The unique nature of Nolah’s exclusive AirFoam™ offers a great blend of latex and memory foam benefits. The addition of more proprietary foam and a thicker base should provide substantial pressure relief and support. These qualities, combined with a lifetime warranty, cooling features, free shipping, and a 120-night trial, lend a lot of value to this all-foam mattress.

Our Verdict

The Nolah Signature is constructed with a concentration on pressure relief, and it certainly delivers. Lightweight sleepers should benefit the most from this bed’s soft feel and proprietary AirFoam™, which should cradle and contour to their curves.

Side sleepers and those seeking pressure relief should also enjoy the Nolah Signature. However, our biggest complaints with the Signature are its lack of edge support. In addition, this mattress likely won’t provide the higher level of support heavyweight sleepers need. These sleepers are better off with a firmer mattress that provides reinforced support.

Sleep Advisor’s Testing Methodology

At Sleep Advisor, our mattress reviews are based on findings from in-person tests that allow us to have a genuine understanding of how the mattress feels and performs.

We also evaluate mattress performance for back, side, and stomach sleeping. Lying in different positions lets us know how supportive the bed is and if it’s good at relieving pressure.

We then take all the information we’ve gathered to rate the bed in specific categories. These results allow us to help our readers find the right mattress for their needs.
