Who We Recommend The Leesa For:
- Side sleepers – People who sleep on their side should get plenty of good pressure relief from the Leesa Original, which has a nice medium firmness and is built with memory foam, a highly popular material in the bedding industry because it cradles the body to relieve pressure buildup.
- Combination sleepers – This model has a medium-level firmness, which caters to the widest range of individuals. This should work well for combination sleepers and partners who have different patterns.
- Socially conscious people – The company has three core initiatives. They plant one tree for each order in partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation, volunteer in local communities, and donate one mattress for every ten they sell.
Who We Don’t Recommend The Leesa For:
- Strict innerspring fans – This foam model does not include innerspring coils in its design, so those who prefer innerspring mattresses might not wanna go for this one. However, there is some bounce on the surface, and it has the advantage of memory materials for pressure relief.
- Couples who want more surface space use – Couples may notice slightly more compression along the Leesa’s edges. This may be an issue for couples who need more space or have a smaller bed.
- Heavyweight stomach sleepers – The Leesa Original has a medium firmness. This is a more universal comfort level that works for most, but heavier stomach sleepers may find that this bed doesn’t give them enough support.
First Impressions: Firmness & Feel
Firmness Scale: 5.5/10
Please remember that firmness is a subjective characteristic and your shape will dictate how you experience a bed. A heavier person whose weight can more easily push through softer comfort and support layers may experience a bed as softer than a lightweight person. The way you are shaped could also play a role here. Consider your weight, shape, and size when evaluating firmness scores.
Mattress firmness is a description of how soft or hard the bed feels while lying on it. Based on our testing, the Leesa mattress comes in at a 5.5 out of 10 on our firmness scale. We rate mattress firmness on a scale of 1-10, with 1 being the absolute softest feel and 10 being the most firm.
At 5.5, this means Leesa is right in the middle with a medium firmness that should be versatile enough to accommodate different sleep styles. That being said, 5.5 is slightly softer than some other medium-firm beds that rate a little firmer.
How Does It Feel?
The Leesa Original mattress is soft and springy to the touch. The top foam layer of this foam bed responds quickly, similar to latex, but pushing deeper into the memory foam layer reveals a slower response time. While there is a medium-level sinkage while lying down on it, the top foam layer makes repositioning easier, and there is a bit of bounce to the bed.
What We Like About the Leesa
- The versatile feel – With a medium firmness, the Leesa should be more accommodating to different sleep styles, including combination sleepers.
- Budget-friendly price – Leesa offers a quality product at a competitive price point, making this a good option for shoppers on a budget.
- Their social initiatives – Leesa’s commitment to improving their communities adds to their appeal as a company and brand.
Our Leesa Complaints
- Not as firm – While the slightly softer feel of this bed may be ideal for some, those who enjoy firmer mattresses may not enjoy the Leesa as much.
- Less bounce than other options – The responsive top layer of the Leesa will give this bed some buoyancy, but those who want the type of bounce you get from an innerspring model may prefer something with coils.
- Shorter trial than some competitors – While Leesa provides customers with an industry-standard trial period of 100 nights, other brands have longer trials, such as a year-long option.
Testing the Leesa Mattress: How it Performed
We test each mattress in specific categories, including motion isolation, bounce, cooling, edge support, overall support, and pressure relief. Additionally, we lie on the mattress to see how it performs in different sleep positions. Through these tests, we can get a better understanding of specific groups of customers we think are a good match with this mattress.
Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types
According to Leesa, their Original mattress is designed to support individual weights of up to 300 pounds.
Side Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – While some lightweight side sleepers could do okay on this bed, others who weigh significantly lighter or have sensitive shoulders may prefer something even more plush.
- Average-Weight Sleepers – Side sleepers who are average in weight should like the softer feel of the Leesa as it relieves pressure in the hips and shoulders.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavyweight sleepers who are closer to 230 pounds may get enough pressure relief on this bed without bottoming out.
Discover the best mattresses for side sleepers.
Back Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight sleepers should find a good balance of support and pressure relief while on their back.
- Average-Weight Sleepers – As with petite sleepers, average-weight individuals should get good support and comfort from this bed for back sleeping.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavier individuals close to 230 pounds should also enjoy the Leesa for back sleeping, but if you’re closer to 300 pounds, this could impact the supportiveness of the mattress.
Browse the best mattresses for back sleepers.
Stomach Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Stomach sleepers who weigh lighter should like the Leesa best in this position, as it should keep their midsection lifted for optimal alignment.
- Average-Weight Sleepers – Average-weight people who are closer to 130 pounds should do fine on this mattress while on their stomach, but if they carry more weight, they may not get the support they need.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Stomach sleepers generally need the most support, which is particularly true for those carrying more weight. Those weighing 230 pounds or more will likely prefer a firmer, more supportive option.

Pressure Relief & Pain
Foam has excellent pressure-relieving qualities, and memory foam is even better. The Leesa combines both materials in its makeup, and they work together to adapt to your body and comfort the spots that need it, like the neck, shoulders, hips, and lumbar area in a gentle hug. Memory foam is a malleable material, so it molds to the exact shape it needs to be so that your body doesn’t have to work as hard.
Back Pain – While lighter stomach sleepers should get sufficient support to prevent lower back pain, people who weigh more could see an uncomfortable curvature in their lower back. However, we do think the nice balance of pressure relief and support for back sleeping on this bed could help those who regularly sleep in this position and are navigating pain.
Hip Pain – We found that the Leesa feels very comfortable for side sleeping, which could be good for those with hip pain since it gives quality pressure relief.
Shoulder Pain – Similar to hip pain, side sleepers should feel sufficient pressure relief to help with shoulder pain.
Support
In addition to pressure relief, your bed has to be supportive. This assures that your spine stays in a neutral position and that you aren’t straining yourself. The key to the Leesa Original mattress is the adaptable foams that should contour your body to fill in the gaps that a traditional mattress might not offer.
The middle memory layer and the dense foam base should give deeper support, which is ideal for the heavier parts of the body — such as the lumbar area — that can give back and stomach sleepers some issues.
Motion Transfer
As an all-foam bed, the Leesa should isolate motion well and keep it from traveling across the mattress. This is a useful feature for many couples or even those who sleep with a restless pet or child since you’re less likely to feel them moving about.
Temperature Regulation / Cooling
The Leesa is built to combat heat buildup common in memory foam mattresses. By strategically placing its memory materials in the middle of the bed below its cooling foam, your body shouldn’t come into contact with heat-retaining foams.
Performance for Couples
The Leesa has some impressive attributes for couples. First, the bed offers great motion isolation, which means fewer nighttime disturbances if one partner tosses and turns. Second, the responsive top layer offers some bounce that sexually-active couples may enjoy. The only downside for couples is that the edges aren’t as strong as other options, but if you purchase a larger size, this may not be as much of an issue.

Handcrafted in the USA
Construction: What’s Inside the Leesa?
The Leesa mattress is a foam bed that is delivered to your door compressed in a box, which should make transporting it to your bedroom an easier process. The mattress is designed for use with various foundations, including solid platforms, solid box springs/foundations, Bunkie boards on box springs, and slatted foundations. The company also sells its own foundation on its site.
The gray cover has four white stripes on its lower third that is easily identifiable as a Leesa. This cover is thicker than other models and zips off for easy spot cleaning.
Three layers make up the bed’s 10-inch height.
- The first layer of the Leesa Original mattress is 2 inches of breathable comfort poly foam. This foam is designed to sleep cool while providing responsiveness and contouring. Responsiveness is good for those seeking a bit of bounce, and contouring is good for anyone in need of pressure relief.
- The middle layer of the Leesa Original is 2 inches of memory foam. Memory foam has garnered an impressive reputation for its ability to cradle the sleeper and alleviate pressure buildup.
- Sitting at the base is 6 inches of dense poly foam, which serves as the main support system for the Leesa Original mattress. This layer helps ensure the sleeper feels well-supported and gives the bed its durability for long-lasting use.
Unboxing & Off-Gassing
The Leesa mattress is shipped to your home in a box. Once your mattress arrives, you can tear open the box, cut through the plastic covering, unroll it, and watch as it inflates to its full size.
As a bed that is shipped in the box, you should expect some initial off-gassing, which is essentially a new-mattress smell and normal for bed-in-a-box mattresses. Leave the Leesa in a well-ventilated room, and it should be odor-free after about two days.
Certifications
CertiPUR-US® Certified – Made with a process that reduces ozone depleters and unsafe amounts of toxic chemicals, Leesa maintains strict requirements that help make its product eco-friendly.

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes the Leesa so great?
For a budget mattress, the Leesa Original offers a lot of value. This mattress should offer sleepers just the right amount of “sink”— not too firm, not too soft.
Is it good for couples?
The Leesa mattress is excellent for couples, even those with different sleeping habits. This bed has good motion isolation as it’s made entirely from foam. Although its edge support isn’t the best, most couples shouldn’t find this to be too big of an issue.
Does it come in a box?
Leesa mattresses come packaged in a box for ultimate convenience. The company has removed the middleman, passing on these savings to the consumer to provide a quality mattress at an excellent value. Further, shipping directly to the customer saves buyers the hassle of moving the bed themselves, making a win-win for everyone.
Is it soft or firm?
We’ve rated the Leesa Original a 5.5 on our firmness scale. This bed should be suitable for different types of sleepers; however, it’s particularly excellent for side and back sleepers, as well as those who change positions throughout the night.
Is there a trial period?
Leesa stands behind their products with assurance and offers a 100-night sleep trial, letting you purchase without worry. If you don’t like your bed before this time, they will coordinate a return for you. Additionally, returned mattresses are donated to a charity to provide a quality bed to those who need one — a bonus for all.

Overall Summary
One of the original bed-in-box brands, Leesa offers a quality product with a high level of versatility.
Side Sleepers
5/5
Side sleepers have further needs for pressure relief than stomach and back positions. This is because they have more weight distributed over a smaller area. Most will benefit from the memory layer that provides pressure relief for the shoulders and hips.
Back Sleepers
4/5
Stomach sleepers should also notice proper alignment. Even though memory foam can make sleepers sink down, the base and latex-like layers offer support to keep hips on top of the mattress instead of digging into the bed. There should be no uncomfortable arching of the back.
Stomach Sleepers
4/5
Stomach sleepers should also notice proper alignment. Even though memory foam can make sleepers sink down, the base and latex-like layers offer support to keep hips on top of the mattress instead of digging into the bed. There should be no uncomfortable arching of the back.
Combination Sleepers
5/5
Those that move around quite a bit should appreciate the neutral feel and responsive top foam layer that gives the bed a small amount of bounce. This should make adjusting effortless, and combo sleepers should remain comfortable in all sleeping positions.
Couples
4/5
Due to the versatility of this bed, couples — even those that have different preferences — should both find it to fit their needs. The foam should insulate the motion that may come across the surface, leaving you undisturbed as your partner gets up to go to the bathroom at night. The edges may compress a bit, but most won’t be bothered by this.
Heavy Sleepers
3/5
While we believe most people will be a good fit for this bed, significantly heavier individuals will likely need firmer support for their backs, necks, and hips to avoid poor body alignment. The manufacturer recommends a 300-pound weight limit for the Leesa Original mattress.
Lightweight Sleepers
4/5
Lighter folks weighing 130 pounds or less should find this foam mattress comfortably supportive due to the gradual firmness and softer top. However, some lightweight individuals that are exclusively side sleepers may need a softer bed for adequate pressure relief.
Average-Weight Sleepers
4/5
Average-weight sleepers should be an excellent match for the Leesa Original, particularly those who enjoy sleeping on their side or back. In some cases, average-weight stomach sleepers may not feel as comfortable, though, in which case they may be better suited with a firmer hybrid option from this brand.
Overall Value
4/5
With a medium firmness, solid support, and the pressure relief of memory foam, there is something for nearly everyone with this bed. Plus, the cost of this product is much lower than you would see in a traditional brick-and-mortar, so you can save money on a quality bed.
Our Verdict
For those who love memory foam but wish it had more responsiveness to it, the Leesa is a fantastic match. This bed has the pressure-relieving advantages of memory foam but still retains responsiveness for easier movement thanks to the top foam unit.
We think this responsiveness makes the Leesa especially great for combination sleepers. Another group who we think will appreciate this bed is side sleepers, who can utilize the bed’s pressure-relieving capabilities. We think stomach sleepers, unless they are lightweight, probably should steer clear of this bed as it may be too soft to keep the spine neutral.

Sleep Advisor’s Testing Methodology
At Sleep Advisor, our mattress reviews are based on findings from in-person tests that allow us to have a genuine understanding of how the mattress feels and performs.
We also evaluate mattress performance for back, side, and stomach sleeping. Lying in different positions lets us know how supportive the bed is and if it’s good at relieving pressure.
We then take all the information we’ve gathered to rate the bed in specific categories. These results allow us to help our readers find the right mattress for their needs.
