Our MyPillow Premium Review for 2024

Last Updated on January 12, 2024

Written by Lisa Bowman

If you watch TV, you’re probably familiar with MyPillow’s energetic commercials, featuring the pillow company’s founder, Mike Lindell. Lindell founded the MyPillow brand in 2009 but invented the first MyPillow in 2004 after coming up with the idea in a dream. He claims his pillows are the most comfortable you’ll ever own. The MyPillow features a patented three-piece interlocking foam, which is essentially a shredded poly foam fill made up of three different sizes. The pillow is designed to be soft yet supportive, providing a plush product that could work for many sleepers.

Today, we are reviewing the MyPillow Premium in the Medium Loft option. It’s worth noting that the website may feel confusing since it says ‘Classic/Premium’ MyPillow. However, you can access the Classic MyPillow here, and if you’re interested in reading more about that pillow you can read our full-length Classic MyPillow review.

Who Is the MyPillow Premium Best for?

Pros: Who Might Like the MyPillow Premium:

  • Back sleepers – We found the MyPillow Premium offered good support for back sleepers, though you may notice some compression from the foam underneath your head after a while.
  • Shoppers wanting a washable pillow – A huge benefit of MyPillow products is that they’re machine washable, which helps keep the pillow clean and free of bacteria and dust mites.
  • People who like to fold their pillows – Thanks to the shredded foam fill, you should be able to easily fold and manipulate the pillow into a shape that suits you.

Cons: Who Might Not Like the MyPillow Premium:

  • Stomach sleepers – The MyPillow Premium is likely a little too lofty for stomach sleepers, who are better off with flatter pillows so that their neck isn’t propped at an awkward angle.
  • People without access to a dryer – This pillow requires an initial 15-minute high-heat dryer cycle to fluff it up, as well as regular dryer spins to rejuvenate the foam. This could pose an issue for those who don’t own a dryer or have easy access to a laundromat.
  • Budget shoppers – While this pillow isn’t the most expensive out there, we don’t think its price matches its quality.  There are likely similar caliber products at a lower cost.

Sleep Advisor’s Testing Methodology

Your choice of pillow is as important as your choice of mattress, and we’re here to help you make that all-important decision, especially with so many options on the market. We not only analyze pillows for characteristics like comfort, temperature regulation, durability, and support, but we also test how they perform in a variety of sleep positions.

On Sleep Advisor, we test each and every pillow to determine who they might be best suited for depending on your sleeping position and sleep preferences.

What is the MyPillow Premium Made of?

Cover

The MyPillow Premium has a 100 percent cotton cover that feels soft and thin, allowing you to sink into the filling inside. It also has a 2-inch gusset that allows you to move more filling to the edges of the pillow.

Core

The Premium features MyPillow’s patented three-piece interlocking poly foam fill. It’s made from three different sizes of foam chunks that are designed to move and connect together, allowing the pillow’s loft to be ‘adjusted’. However, we’d argue that a pillow is only adjustable if you can add or remove fill, and you can’t do that with MyPillow. The larger foam is designed to offer spinal support, the medium foam is to help hold the pillow’s shape by connecting the other sizes, and the smaller foam helps provide softness.

MyPillow Premium Firmness & Feel

Firmness

The MyPillow Premium comes in four firmness options. There’s a general guide on the company website to help you choose the firmness that is likely to work best for you. This size guide is based on your t-shirt size, and we find this method a little simplified as it doesn’t take into account sleeping position, which is important when it comes to pillow firmness. The brand recommends that if you are used to sleeping on a down, down-alternative, or feather pillow, you should select one firmness level down from what is suggested on the chart.

The four firmness options are color-coded – yellow, white, green, and blue – with yellow being the softest and blue coming in as the most firm. However, we’d argue that none of the colors are particularly firm. We found that the white MyPillow Premium offers a medium softness that will probably be most suitable for average-sized back sleepers.

Feel

The shredded foam combined with a thin cover makes for a pretty lumpy feel. However, this type of foam does allow the pillow to be manipulated and shaped much easier than a fiberfill pillow.

The pillow is delivered compressed in a bag. Once you remove it you might be shocked at how flat it looks. However, don’t despair, this is normal for MyPillow – simply pop it in the dryer for 15 minutes on high heat and the foam will expand to its full glory. If the pillow becomes flat after sleeping on it (which in our experience, it did), you can run it through the dryer to rejuvenate the foam.

It’s also worth noting that these four firmness levels are only available in sizes Queen and King. A Standard pillow only comes in medium or firm (Medium Loft or More Loft).

Loft

A pillow’s loft describes its height, and the MyPillow Premium has four loft options – Lower Loft (yellow), Medium Loft (white), More Loft (green), and Most Loft (blue). This review focuses on the white version, which is Medium Loft. It should be noted that to maintain this loft, this pillow will need to be consistently fluffed by hand and tossed in the dryer on a regular basis.

Weight (Density of the Pillow)

The MyPillow Premium’s Medium Loft option weighs around 1 pound.

Sleeping on the MyPillow Premium Pillow

We found the MyPillow Premium to be a better match for back sleepers, who should experience good support in this position. While it also provided good support for side sleepers, it tends to flatten out over time, losing this support. Stomach sleepers would be wise to choose a pillow with less loft, perhaps trying the yellow MyPillow Premium, which has the lowest amount of loft.

Side Sleepers

Initially, we found the MyPillow Premium was a pretty good choice for side sleepers, as it offered plenty of spinal support. However, the chunks of foam flattened out after a few nights, so we had to keep fluffing it up to maintain the required support level. This is less than ideal, so we’d recommend side sleepers go for either the More Loft or Most Loft variations, which offer more fill. Another concern is that we could feel the foam on our face through the thin cover, which wasn’t very comfortable.

Back Sleepers

We found the MyPillow Premium to be better for back sleepers – it was definitely our preferred sleeping position while reviewing the product. However, while we found it offered good support initially, the foam did tend to compress overnight, especially at the back of the head, which led to discomfort. While you could try and re-fluff the pillow in the dryer every few days or so, this can become a drain on both your time and energy bills.

Stomach Sleepers

Overall, we’d say this pillow isn’t the best match for stomach sleeping, as you’re likely to feel the foam chunks through the thin cover. Light to average-weight people will probably find the pillow has too much filling to keep their head and spine in alignment, so they would be better off with the Lower Loft model. However, heavier stomach sleepers may just find they have enough weight to compress the pillow to an ideal height.

Sleep Advisor’s Performance Ratings for the MyPillow Premium

Temperature

3/5

The MyPillow Premium’s cover is thin and breathable, and the chunks of foam inside allow for airflow. However, poly foam is known for trapping heat so it can wind up feeling warm if you sleep in one position for too long. If you sleep hot, a dedicated cooling pillow might be a better option.

Support

3/5

The shredded poly foam has a tendency to flatten down during use. While back and side sleepers should initially feel well supported on the MyPillow Premium, you’ll likely begin to experience discomfort as the foam compresses.

Durability

2/5

The shredded poly foam tends to flatten out, which means the pillow would need to be re-fluffed often, so we wouldn’t recommend this pillow for those without easy access to a dryer. Furthermore, poly foam is usually less durable than memory foam or latex, so if durability is important to you, we’d recommend a pillow containing those materials.

Comfort

2/5

While the MyPillow Premium could be an okay choice for many back and side sleepers, it loses points for the foam compression, as mentioned above. We found our head sinking further and further into the pillow while sleeping on our backs, and we could feel the chunks of foam on our face through the thin cover when sleeping on our stomach and side.

Off-Gassing

3/5

The MyPillow Premium contains poly foam in its fill, and it’s typical for these foam products to produce a type of new-product smell, also known as off-gassing. Though it’s generally considered harmless and usually dissipates within a few days, this odor can be bothersome for those who are sensitive to smells.

Allergens

3/5

The foam used in the MyPillow Premium is CertiPUR-US® certified, which verifies that it’s passed strict tests for low emissions of harmful chemicals like VOCs (volatile organic compounds). This product isn’t listed as hypoallergenic, though the company recommends that people with allergies launder their pillow every two months.

Cleaning & Care

5/5

MyPillows can be washed in a machine (on a cold or warm regular cycle) and dried in a dryer, making them highly convenient for cleaning and care. In fact, MyPillow recommends washing your pillow every three to four months, or every two months for those with allergies. Bear in mind that the pillow doesn’t arrive sleep-ready; you need to put it in the dryer for 15 minutes on high heat after unpackaging so it will become fluffed up.

Sleep Trial & Warranty

4/5

While the warranty is long (10 years) the trial is fairly short (60 nights), although that should be enough time for you to decide whether this really is the world’s comfiest pillow. If you decide it’s not for you, you’ll receive a full refund (minus any shipping fees) so long as it’s returned within the 60-night trial.

MyPillow Premium Frequently Asked Questions

How expensive are MyPillows?

The most affordable MyPillow is currently the MyPillow Premium, which costs 59.98 dollars for Queen size at full price. The most expensive MyPillow is the newest model, the MyPillow 2.0, which comes in at 89.98 dollars for a Queen.

Are there different grades of MyPillow?

Yes. MyPillows are color-coded to indicate loft/support level – yellow is Lower Loft (soft), white is Medium Loft, green is More Loft, and blue is Most Loft (firm). The Premium line (the subject of this review) is available in all color/loft options, while the Classic range only offers white (Medium Loft) and green (More Loft).

How long do MyPillows last?

MyPillows are guaranteed not to go flat for 10 years, and they come with a generous 10-year warranty. However, we found we had to pop ours in the dryer every few days to decompress the foam chunks, which is not convenient for most people.

Which MyPillow is best for side sleeping?

We reviewed the MyPillow Premium in the Medium Loft version, and while we found it was initially good for side sleeping, it flattened out fairly quickly, so we’d recommend trying out a higher loft option if you’re a side sleeper.

Our Final Thoughts on the MyPillow Premium

We’re not sure the MyPillow Premium offers the best value as it’s a pretty simple design and requires a lot of aftercare to keep it looking and feeling its best. Having to continually re-fluff the pillow in the dryer isn’t extremely convenient and could add a hefty amount to your energy bills over time.

However, reviews are subjective, and while we didn’t think this was the greatest pillow on the market, there are plenty of positive reviews online from people who did enjoy it. Overall, we gave this bed a 3.1 out of 5. If the MyPillow Premium has piqued your interest, why not make the most of the 60-day money-back guarantee and see for yourself?
