Our Avocado vs. Spindle Bed Comparison for 2024

Last Updated on January 11, 2024

Written by Olivera Jancikin

Considering a Spine or Avocado mattress? Our Spindle vs. Avocado Green comparison guide can help you decide between an all-foam or hybrid mattress.

Spindle’s latex bed was created by a company whose founder comes from a long line of mattress makers, while Avocado’s latex and steel hybrid is offered up by a company dedicated to natural materials and customer service. Both beds offer great bounce, minimal motion transfer, and a comforting gentle cradle, but their differences may sway you.

If you still can’t decide at the end of this comparison, our individual reviews for each brand will provide a more in-depth analysis of each bed.

Who I’d Recommend the Spindle For

  • People who need pressure relief – We experienced exceptional pressure relief from this all-latex mattress, with its super responsive layers offering a gentle and comforting cradle in all the right places.
  • Shoppers wanting versatility – The beauty of the Spindle is that each of the three latex layers has a different firmness, allowing you to switch them around to create a sleeping surface that best suits you.
  • Lightweight sleepers – We think this bed would suit most lightweight sleepers in all positions as it offers a great mix of comfort and support for this weight category, especially with the ability to switch up the layers.

Who I’d Recommend the Avocado Green For

  • Shoppers requiring zoned support – The coil system in the Avocado features three zones, offering extra support where you need it most, like the lumbar area. This should help to keep your spine in healthy alignment, minimizing the risk of aches and pains.
  • Heavyweight sleepers – We found the Avocado to be more supportive of heavier weights than the Spindle. We think heavier back sleepers, in particular, might appreciate this medium-firm mattress.
  • Innerspring fans – This hybrid features responsive latex layers atop a coil unit, which may pique the interest of those who can’t get enough of an innerspring but are up for trying something a bit different.

Comparing Spindle vs. Avocado Green: Top Similarities

  • Eco-friendly – Both the Avocado and Spindle feature organic, natural materials like cotton, wool, and latex, avoiding the use of synthetic foams.
  • Trial period – Each bed comes with a 365-night trial period, giving you an entire year to decide whether you’ve picked the bed of your dreams.
  • Price – While the Spindle is slightly more expensive than the Avocado, the difference isn’t as big between the two.

Comparing Spindle vs. Avocado Green: Key Differences

  • Construction – The Spindle is an all-foam model featuring organic cotton, wool, and latex while the Avocado is a hybrid featuring organic cotton, wool, latex, and a coil support system. If you’re a diehard all-foam or hybrid fan, this might sway your vote.
  • Edge support – Our reviewers found that Avocado’s reinforced coils offer much better edge support than the Spindle’s all-latex offering, which doesn’t feature any reinforced edges. This is something to take into account if you share your bed and like to use the whole surface area.
  • Removable cover – Both beds feature organic cotton covers, but while the Spindle’s is removable, the Avocado’s isn’t. Be aware, however, that the Spindle cover can’t be put in the washing machine. Like the Avocado, it is spot-clean only.

Comparing Firmness, Support & Feel

Firmness

Our firmness scale ranges from 1 to 10, with 10 being the firmest. Our team ranked the Spindle at 6 out of 10 and the Avocado at 6.5, making them both medium-firm. However, the Spindle’s three layers of latex have differing levels of firmness and can be rearranged to change the feel of the bed.

Our team would recommend the Spindle for sleepers on the lighter end of the scale, as it feels more plush than the Avocado, which heavier sleepers should steer towards.

Support

Lying down on the Spindle, we immediately felt how springy and comfortable it was, with the latex conforming to our shape. However, as the pressure disperses through the middle and lower layers, we could feel it becoming more supportive.  The Avocado’s coil unit features three zones, which should offer extra support where you need it most, like the lumbar area. This makes it more suitable for heavier sleepers, who need that extra lift to keep their spine in alignment.

Feel

Both the Avocado and Spindle start with a breathable organic cotton cover and natural wool batting. While reviewing these beds, Sleep Advisor product tester, Stuart, appreciated how soft and temperature-neutral both beds felt. However, he particularly loved the Spindle’s cover, commenting on how the wool batting has a feel not dissimilar to a cozy pillow top.

When it comes to setup, note that you have to assemble the Spindle yourself and that the Avocado is incredibly heavy.

Comparing Sinkage and Bounce

Our tester, Stuart, describes the Spindle as having a gentle, pressure-relieving cradle, and he found the Avocado offers more of a comforting, cradling effect without the loss of support.

The differences between the beds become more clear once the Avocado’s coil system activates. The zoned springs stand firm where needed but also promise soothing compression, while the all-foam Spindle puts an emphasis on pressure relief.

Both beds feature rapidly responsive materials that should make changing positions a breeze. There’s a good level of bounce on both. However, those looking for enhanced springiness will likely prefer the Avocado as we found the coils offer slightly more bounce than the all-foam Spindle.

Comparing Motion Transfer

We were impressed with the motion isolation on both beds. Despite their bouncy latex and the Avocado’s coils, they both manage to minimize much of the movement from one side of the bed to the other. This is likely due to thick latex layers and the plush wool batting absorbing a lot of the vibrations.

The Avocado’s individually wrapped coils also help to prevent motion transfer. This is great news for light sleepers who sleep beside restless partners or pets. However, you may still feel excessively large movements made by your sleeping partner.

Comparing Cooling

Both beds feature breathable cotton covers that allow for airflow, with layers of natural wool, which is known for its temperature-regulating and moisture-wicking abilities.

The foam layers in both the Avocado and Spindle are made from natural latex, which tends to sleep cooler than its synthetic foam counterparts. Plus, both beds feature perforated latex, which further promotes airflow and cooling. The Avocado’s coil unit allows for even more ventilation.

While neither bed is necessarily promoted as a cooling mattress, our team found both to be temperature-neutral and comfortably cool, so hot sleepers may do well on either option.

Comparing Construction (Materials & Quality)

Spindle Construction

This 10-inch mattress is made of three latex layers that are shipped in individual boxes. The shopper then constructs their own bed, placing the layers inside the GOTS-certified breathable organic cotton cover. This cover is removable and can be spot-cleaned but isn’t suitable for machine washing. The latex layers can be switched around to find a comfort level that suits you.

Inside the cotton cover, there’s an inch of GOTS-certified organic wool batting that’s designed to regulate temperature, wick away moisture, and act as a natural fire barrier.

Updated - September 11, 2024
  • The comfort layer contains 3 inches of GOLS-certified organic soft latex, which is designed to provide bounce and pressure relief. Pinholes are punched into the latex to promote airflow and regulate temperature.
  • The transition layer holds another 3 inches of organic medium latex. This should provide a deep level of pressure relief and bounce.
  • The support layer creates a pressure-relieving foundation through the use of 3 inches of organic firm natural latex.

Avocado Green Construction

This 11-inch hybrid starts with a breathable GOTS-certified organic cotton cover, with needle-tufted organic wool rosettes that bind the layers together to increase durability. Heavy-duty handles on each side of the mattress allow for easier repositioning.

Take a closer look at the Avocado Green construction
  • Beneath the cover is a GOTS-certified organic wool layer that wicks away moisture, regulates temperature, and serves as a natural flame retardant.
  • The comfort layer features 2-inch thick Dunlop latex, certified by GOLS. This material naturally sleeps cooler than synthetic foams and is aerated to promote airflow.
  • The support layer consists of up to 1,438 individually wrapped 8-inch steel coils that have been upcycled to reduce waste. This layer features three zones to provide support or pressure relief as needed in the shoulder, hip, and knee areas.
  • The base layer consists of 1-inch thick Dunlop latex that has a higher density than the previous latex layer, creating a stable foundation.
  • The perimeter boasts reinforced coils to promote a consistent feel from edge to edge.

Comparing Company Policies & Price

Warranty – The Avocado has a 25-year limited warranty, while the Spindle has a much shorter 10-year limited warranty. However, Spindle’s 25-Year “Comfort Program” means you can order new latex layers with a 30 percent discount, extending the life of your mattress.

Shipping – Free shipping is offered with both mattresses to the contiguous U.S. Additional fees apply for delivery to Alaska and Hawaii. The Spindle arrives in two boxes, and you have to assemble the mattress yourself. The Avocado is delivered compressed in a box, though it is pretty heavy. White-glove delivery is offered with the Avocado for a fee.

Trial Period – There’s a generous 365-night trial period with both beds.

Returns – You must try the Avocado for at least 30 nights before initiating a return, where you’ll receive a full refund minus a 99-dollar processing fee, which includes mattress collection. Spindle requires you to try the mattress for at least 60 nights, but their return process is a little more complicated as they won’t collect the mattress. A full refund will only be processed once you show proof that you’ve donated the mattress to charity.

Price – The Spindle is more expensive than the Avocado in every size, but the price difference varies. Even the biggest difference isn’t a vast amount in the world of mattresses, so the price of these mattresses may not be a deciding factor for you.

Final Thoughts

In this battle of eco-friendly mattresses, only one can win, but which will reign supreme? Both mattresses offer great bounce, motion isolation, and cooling, but what about their differences?

If you want our opinion, we think the Spindle is a great choice for lightweight sleepers and people seeking enhanced pressure relief for achy joints. Shoppers who prefer exceptional edge support, zoned support, and a slightly firmer feel may be enticed by the Avocado Green mattress.
