Purple RestorePlus™ Mattress Review for 2024

Last Updated on December 15, 2023

Written by Julia Forbes

Purple mattresses are unique in the mattress world, thanks to the brand’s hyper-elastic gel polymer grid. This waffle-like grid is designed to provide consumers with a more cooling, squishy, and comfortable night’s sleep. In fact, Purple says their grids have been so effective, they’ve been used to help critical care hospital patients.

Purple’s proprietary grid also means that Purple mattresses don’t feel like any other beds. This is true of the RestorePlus™, which includes Purple’s patented gel grid along with innerspring coils, making this hybrid bed both pressure-relieving and supportive.

My in-depth Purple RestorePlus™ mattress review will cover the details of this product and who I think would be the best fit for it. Specifically, I tested the Soft model, which I’ll focus on in this review. However, this bed is also available in Firm.

*Editor’s note: Purple now offers complimentary in-home delivery for their Restore mattresses.

Who I Recommend The Purple RestorePlus™ For:

  • Lightweight sleepers – The Soft version of this mattress will be the best fit for lighter-weight to average-weight sleepers. Heavyweight sleepers would likely do better on the Firm version, though I did not test that one myself.
  • Side sleepers – The Soft version of this bed is ideal for side sleepers, as it gently cushions the shoulder and hip when lying on the side.
  • Luxury shoppers – This mattress is made with a lot of quality materials, including hypoallergenic and non-toxic gels. That said, you get what you pay for, and the price tag on the RestorePlus™ is higher than some people might be comfortable with.

Who I Don’t Recommend The Purple RestorePlus™ For:

  • Heavyweight sleepers – Again, heavyweight sleepers might do better on the Firm model because the Soft will likely sink too far beneath a bigger body and wouldn’t be supportive enough for spine alignment. Instead, heavyweight sleepers will want a more supportive, and likely firm, mattress.
  • Stomach sleepers – The Soft version of this bed doesn’t do well for stomach sleeping for the same reasons it doesn’t do well for heavy sleepers – it will dip in key areas that need support like the hips. While lying on your stomach, this will create an uncomfortable curve in the low back. Instead, a mattress specifically for stomach sleepers could be a better option.

First Impressions: Firmness & Feel

Firmness Scale: 5/10 (Plush Soft)

On Sleep Advisor’s mattress firmness scale from 1 to 10, in which 10 is the firmest, I am giving the RestorePlus™ a solid 5. I’d say this particular bed feels very soft. Purple does classify it as medium-soft, however, I’d tend to disagree with the “medium” part.

Even with how soft it is, there is still plenty of support from the lower layer of coils upholding everything above it. Without the coils, I imagine this bed would feel even softer (too soft) since it feels quite malleable as is.

How Does It Feel?

The first thing I notice when lying down on the RestorePlus™ is that I can actually feel the heat moving away from my body. This is due to their classic grid, a temperature-neutral material, as well as the cooling, moisture-wicking cover.

The bed itself feels squishy but not like memory foam; it completely adapts to my body in a unique way that I can most closely liken to a waterbed, though this is much more comfortable, pressure relieving, and doesn’t have any “sloshing.”

What I Like About the Purple RestorePlus™

  • Made in the U.S.A. – Purple mattresses are made and assembled in the United States.
  • Non-toxic materials – All of the materials used in Purple mattresses are hypoallergenic and non-toxic.
  • Superior pressure relief – Purple’s grid uniquely conforms to the body, providing gentle pressure relief for those who need it.

My RestorePlus™ Complaints

  • On the pricier side – The cost of a Queen-size RestorePlus™ is 2,895 dollars, which may be out of some shoppers’ budgets.
  • The bed’s feel isn’t for everyone – As mentioned, the feel of this bed is uniquely different from other standard mattress types, so it may not be everybody’s preference.

Testing the Purple RestorePlus™Mattress: How it Performed

When testing our mattresses, I am looking at specific elements, including pressure relief, support, firmness, motion isolation, bounce, edge support, and cooling. I also analyze how these beds will perform for different body types and sleep positions, as well as how I think they’ll do for couples sharing the bed.

For more on our testing methodology, visit our product review process page.

Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types

According to Purple, there is no specific weight capacity for the RestorePlus™ mattress, but they do recommend staying below 650 pounds. That said, the Soft model that I tested was far too malleable to support heavier sleepers. As an average-weight person myself, it was even a little bit too soft for me in certain positions.

I loved testing the new Purple mattress in our testing facility.

Side Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Petite side sleepers should enjoy the soft feel of this mattress. It should be light on the pressure points.
  • Average-Weight Sleepers – Average-weight side sleepers will also feel good on this bed because of the grid’s pressure-relieving properties. The zoned coils also help with support.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – This mattress will likely feel too soft to most heavyweight sleepers, even when sleeping on their side.

Back Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight back sleepers should feel their back is cushioned and sinking in just enough.
  • Average-Weight Sleepers – As an average-weight person, my lower back sank in more than any other area, and it felt a bit too soft in this position.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – The Soft version of this mattress won’t be supportive enough for heavyweight back sleepers. I can see a lot of tossing and turning for them.

Stomach Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Most lightweight stomach sleepers probably won’t feel supported enough in this position. Their hips will sink into the grid, perhaps a bit too much.
  • Average-Weight Sleepers – Average-weight stomach sleepers won’t have enough support beneath their hips and spine to feel comfortable on this soft mattress.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Stomach sleeping is not going to work for heavyweight folks on this mattress. The Firm model may be a better fit.

Pressure Relief

5/5

For those who need good pressure relief, the RestorePlus™ may be your new best friend. The grid is made from a polymer gel, so it is super pliable.

When I lay on it, I could feel it conform to my body’s shape, no matter what position I was in. It removed the pressure from sensitive areas like my hips and shoulders. This should be especially effective for lightweight sleepers.

Is the RestorePlus™ Mattress Good for Pain Relief?

For many sleepers, the RestorePlus™ is an excellent choice for pain relief. What I mean is, lightweight sleepers and some average-weight sleepers should get a lot of pressure relief and sufficient body support from this mattress. Heavier folks, though, may end up making their pain worse on the Soft version of this bed, which likely won’t support them enough.

Back Pain

Sleepers with back pain or sciatica should love the pressure relief offered by the RestorePlus™ when lying on their side. However, stomach sleepers with back pain may exacerbate symptoms as the hips will sink too far down into this soft mattress.

Hip Pain

Sleepers with hip pain who sleep on their side will benefit the most from this mattress. It should gently contour to the shape of your hip, alleviating pressure from the area. I’d recommend the Soft firmness level for those with hip pain.

Shoulder Pain

Often, shoulder pain can be exacerbated by sleeping on your side on a mattress that is too firm. For that reason, the Soft model of this bed should be perfect for side sleepers with shoulder pain. It should cushion the shoulder joint and remove pressure from the sore area.

Support

4/5

While lying on my side and back on this bed, I felt fully supported. Granted, lying on my side felt more comfortable for me than on my back, but still, in both positions, my spine felt like it was in a good, neutral alignment.

However, on my stomach, my hips dipped too far into the mattress, which over time, would hurt my back. I think this Soft model of the mattress will be most supportive for light to average-weight side and back sleepers. I’d be curious to see how supportive the Firm version feels for heavier folks and stomach sleepers.

Motion Transfer

2/5

Unfortunately, the RestorePlus™ gets just a 2 out of 5 for minimizing motion transfer. Every movement can be felt on this bed, and our seismograph test picked up everything as I switched between back, stomach, and side positions. This is something to be aware of for those who share a bed.

Temperature Regulation / Cooling

4/5

This mattress felt very breathable. While lying on it, I didn’t feel any heat being retained around me. The cover isn’t necessarily “cool-to-the-touch,” however, I personally liked that because sometimes a “cool-touch” mattress can feel slimy or have a strange texture. Instead, this bed just feels nice and breathable, which should be a plus for hot sleepers seeking a cooler bed.

Bounce

5/5

The RestorePlus™ gets high marks for bounce. I could feel an immediate spring-back from the grid. It’s hard to tell how much of that is from the coils since they are so deep in the mattress, but from a surface perspective, it feels quite bouncy.

Edge Support

2/5

This score is lower because when I sat on the bed’s edge, I slid right off and sank to the bottom. Therefore, it’s not a good fit for sitting on the edge of the bed. However, when lying down near the edge, I felt pretty securely held.

Performance for Couples

3/5

Couples who share a bed tend to look for a few key ingredients in a mattress: solid motion isolation, some bounce for intimacy, good edge support, and a mattress that won’t sleep too hot.

The RestorePlus™ has a couple of things going for it; it doesn’t sleep hot and it is bouncy. However, overall, I don’t think it’s the best choice for couples, due to its poor motion isolation and its lack of edge support. You’d likely feel your partner moving throughout the night.

Preference-based Features

  • Zoned Support

The innerspring layer of this mattress is zoned for support. This means the coils are strategically arranged to provide more support for the heaviest parts of the body and keep the spine in alignment.

  • Two Firmness Options

You can choose between Soft or Firm with this hybrid bed.

  • Hypoallergenic

All of the materials used in Purple mattresses are hypoallergenic and non-toxic. Many of the materials used are also made with recyclable, food-grade, and food-contact-grade materials.

Construction: What’s Inside the Purple RestorePlus™?

All Purple mattresses are constructed using their GelFlex® Grid, which is a gel-based, geometric polymer that provides both cushion and support. The Purple RestorePlus is available in Soft and Firm variations, but I tested the Soft model. This mattress consists of three-zone edge-to-edge coils, which provide spine support.

  • The top of the mattress has a SoftFlex cover with an antimicrobial and moisture-wicking finish. This cover is breathable and stretchy, which allows for a cooling and soft surface.
  • Going deeper, the GelFlex® Grid, Purple’s unique feature, is a geometric polymer that provides pressure relief and cooling properties. The grid cradles pressure points, adapting to the shape of the body.
  • Under the grid is the edge support foam, which increases spinal support and mattress durability. This support and durability make it easier to get in and out of the bed.
  • The next layer of the mattress is an Ultra Comfort foam that helps the mattress conform to your body as you move. This foam is important for relieving pressure. It also offers temperature balance by dissipating heat.
  • The base of the mattress is constructed of three-zone responsive coils that provide spinal support and support airflow. The edge-to-edge 8-inch coils assist the GelFlex Grid in temperature regulation and support.
  • The edges of this mattress are designed to not sag due to the edge support system, which intends to extend the lifetime of the mattress. However, as mentioned, I found the edge support to be lacking during testing.

Unboxing & Off-Gassing

Purple mattresses don’t tend to have that chemical off-gassing smell that many foam bed-in-a-boxes do. That’s because the gel that they use is non-toxic.

As far as unboxing goes, it was pretty simple. The RestorePlus™ arrives rolled up in a thick plastic cover. The package weighs 154 pounds and the mattress itself weighs 147 pounds (for a Queen), so it is a good idea to set this mattress up with a friend.

Certifications

  • CertiPUR-US® certified – The foams in this bed are  CertiPUR-US® certified. CertiPUR-US® is a third-party program that ensures the foams meet rigorous health and safety standards. • CleanAir GOLD certified – The gel and poly foams in this mattress have received a GOLD rating from Intertek, a third-party quality assurance company. This confirms that certified products will reduce health risks related to chemical exposure and meet the standards of other agencies promoting minimal VOC exposure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a base for my RestorePlus mattress?

Yes, you’ll need a base for your RestorePlus™ mattress. Purple recommends one of their platform bed frames or adjustable bases.

However, if you opt for a bed frame outside of Purple, they advise making sure the foundation is made of wood or metal with slats less than three inches apart. The weight capacity should be 650 pounds and up.

Does a Purple mattress feel like a waterbed?

Purple’s GelFlex® Grid moves with your body in a way that might feel similar to a waterbed but with much more support and pressure relief.

How many years does a Purple mattress last?

According to Purple, their mattresses are designed to last about 10 years with normal use. During this time, you shouldn’t experience any sagging, and if you do, it may be covered by your warranty.

My Verdict

Purple is known for their unique pressure-relieving and cooling GelFlex® Grid. In this mattress, this gel grid lies just beneath the cover, so its full benefits can be felt as soon as you lie down.

For lightweight and side sleepers, as well as those with hip or shoulder pain, I’d recommend the Soft version of this mattress. However, if you’re heavier or prefer to sleep on your stomach, you’d be better off with the Firm.

I also love this bed for solo sleepers more than couples due to its less-than-ideal motion isolation. However, if you and your partner aren’t easily disturbed, it could be a good choice for you. Overall, this bed earned a total score of 3.7 out of 5.
