Helix Midnight Mattress Review 2024

Last Updated on January 8, 2024

Written by Olivera Jancikin

If you’re after a high-quality hybrid mattress that combines pressure relief and support while giving a medium-firm feel, the Helix Midnight mattress might be the right choice. The layers of this bed are stacked to provide a versatile sleep space that should fit many people.

Helix was founded back in California, back in 2015. The company produces a range of mattresses and designs that deliver excellent comfort and quality.

Emma from our team tested this bed to determine who might benefit from the Helix Midnight the most. In this article, we’ll focus on what Emma found when it comes to comfort, pressure relief, support, motion isolation, and more.

The bed’s memory and poly foams are CertiPUR-US® certified, and the coils are made of steel for good durability.
The Helix Midnight provides edge support by adding thicker-gauge coils which should ensure the bed doesn’t sink too much.

People who enjoy the feeling of an all-foam bed may prefer a different mattress.
The bed is medium to slightly firm, which may be too much for those who sleep on the side, especially if they weigh above 130 pounds.

Sleep Advisor’s Testing Methodology

Testing the Helix Midnight mattress allowed us to evaluate how it feels in different sleeping positions. This way, we’re able to tell whether or not this mattress would fit a certain group of people based on their weight and preferred sleeping position.

If you look at Emma’s video review, you can see her testing this bed for motion isolation, edge support, bounce, and cooling. By checking for these preference-based features, we can help figure out if the Helix Midnight is a good option for couples, hot sleepers, combination sleepers, and people with mobility issues.

Our lead product tester, Julia Forbes, in the studio.

Who We Recommend The Helix Midnight For:

  • Fans of a best-of-both-worlds hybrid design – The Helix Midnight mattress has a classic hybrid design, featuring a coil unit underneath two foam layers. This design allows for a balance of pressure relief and support that we think works for most sleeping positions.
  • People with back pain – This mattress has a medium-firm feel and durable coils that should provide sufficient support to the lower back, helping to ease the pain in this area. “On my back, I feel really comfortable and evenly supported,” said Emma.
  • Average-weight people – We think that sleepers weighing 130 to 230 pounds should find the Helix Midnight to be comfortable, especially when sleeping on their backs. Emma weighs 140 pounds and finds this bed comfortable in multiple positions, but says she’d probably prefer a softer bed for side sleeping.

Who We Don’t Recommend The Helix Midnight For:

  • Restless sleepers – Restless sleepers who share a bed may disturb their partner because this hybrid doesn’t have the best motion isolation when compared to memory foam mattresses. We think that restless sleepers and those who wake up easily may prefer a mattress without coils. That said, it’s not the worst hybrid in this department. Emma said that she was “actually really surprised by how well it isolated motion.”
  • Heavy stomach sleepers – Stomach sleepers weighing above 230 pounds need ample support to prevent the hips from sinking in too deeply. For this reason, we think many stomach sleepers in this group might find the Helix Midnight mattress to be too soft, which could pose issues for their lower backs.

First Impressions: Firmness & Feel

Firmness Scale: 6-7/10

Please remember that firmness is a subjective characteristic and your body type will dictate how you experience a bed. A heavier person whose weight can more easily push through softer comfort and support layers might experience a bed as softer than a lightweight person. The way you are shaped could also play a role here. Consider your weight, shape, and size when evaluating firmness scores.

The firmness of the Helix Midnight mattress is 6-7 out of 10. Firmness ratings are based on a scale of 1-10, with 1 being the softest and 10 the hardest. This rating means that the Helix Midnight mattress is medium to slightly firm, which should be a good match for many sleepers.

This firmness level is typically the best for back sleepers because it provides good support for the lower back and shoulders. The mattress distributes your weight evenly to prevent any pressure from building up. In addition, it should feel good for heavier side sleepers and lightweight stomach sleepers.

How Does The Helix Midnight Mattress Feel?

The Helix Midnight feels a bit on the firmer side. When you first lie on it, you can feel the contouring memory foam layer under the cooling cover. The foam has a medium feel, while the transition layer underneath has a firmer feel to prevent you from bottoming out. Emma adds, “The mix of comfort and support is just right.”

The cover feels cool and stretchy, which indicates it can take a lot before it shows signs of wear and tear.

Testing the Helix Midnight Mattress: How it Performed

Emma from our team tested the Helix Midnight in person to evaluate how it feels and performs in different sleeping positions. She also tested for features like motion isolation, edge support, bounce, and cooling. By checking for these preference-based features, we can help figure out if the Helix Midnight is a good option for couples, hot sleepers, combination sleepers, and people with mobility issues.

For more on our testing methodology, visit our product review process page.

What We Like About the Helix Midnight

  • Pressure relief – Helix Midnight’s use of memory foam in its construction is beneficial for those who need good pressure relief. Memory foam is considered one of the best materials for pressure relief because of its ability to conform to the sleeper’s body, reducing pressure build-up.
  • High-quality materials – Helix Midnight uses plenty of high-quality materials in its construction. The bed’s memory and poly foams are CertiPUR-US® certified, and the coils are made of steel for good durability.
  • Edge support – We agree that edge support benefits couples and individuals who prefer more space to spread out. The Helix Midnight provides edge support by adding thicker-gauge coils lengthwise, which should ensure the bed doesn’t sink too much along the edges.

Our Helix Midnight Complaints

  • Too firm for side sleepersSide sleepers usually prefer softer beds that allow a bit more sinkage than the Helix Midnight. The bed is medium to slightly firm, which we think may be too much for those who sleep on their sides, especially if they weigh above 130 pounds.
  • No all-foam design – Hybrids provide plenty of benefits like extra support and cooling, but people who enjoy the feel of an all-foam bed might prefer a different mattress. Although it has memory foam, Emma said, “If you want that old-school memory foam feel, this bed may not be for you.”

Sleeping Positions and Body Types

Helix claims their beds can support up to 1,000 pounds, which is 500 pounds per side. However, one thing to keep in mind is that the Helix Midnight will feel differently depending on how much you weigh.

Side Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – We think the Helix Midnight might feel too firm for people weighing less than 130 pounds who prefer sleeping on their side.
  • Average-Weight Sleepers – Side sleepers weighing 130 to 230 pounds should find a good balance of pressure relief and support. “If I was sleeping on my side all night, I’d probably prefer a softer bed, but it’s still really comfortable,” said Emma, who weighs 140 pounds.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavy sleepers usually experience this mattress as feeling softer, which makes it a good option for those who like sleeping on their sides.

Back Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Most lightweight back sleepers should like the support the Helix Midnight provides. However, we think that some may be too lightweight to activate the upper layers, which can result in pressure building up in the lower back.
  • Average-Weight Sleepers – Average-weight back sleepers should experience just enough sinkage for pressure relief without taking away from the support level. “I like how the foams feel soft but not too soft — and not like I’m sinking in and getting stuck,” said Emma.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavyweight back sleepers should sink deeper in the first foam layer, which we think should help relieve pressure build-up. However, this might take away from the support level for those weighing over 230 pounds.

Stomach Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Stomach sleepers weighing under 130 pounds should feel on top of the mattress, which is excellent when it comes to keeping the spine aligned. The hips are unlikely to sink, meaning this Helix should feel comfortable for this group.
  • Average-Weight Sleepers – Average-weight stomach sleepers might sink deeper into the first layer, but they’re unlikely to bottom out to the coil unit. “I’m feeling my hips sink into the mattress just a little bit,” Emma said. “I’m still decently comfortable, but I might suggest a firmer mattress for exclusive stomach sleepers.”
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavy people who like sleeping on their stomachs might prefer a firmer mattress. The Helix feels slightly firm, but the comfort layer has a medium feel, which we think might not be enough to keep the hips aligned with the rest of the body.

Pressure Relief & Pain

4/5

Helix Midnight Pressure Map

The Helix Midnight mattress has two foam layers above the coil unit. The comfort layer is made from memory foam, which is one of the best materials for pressure relief. We tend to find that memory foam allows just the right amount of sinkage to contour the sleeper’s curves in order to prevent the pressure from building up. Although this is especially beneficial for side and back sleepers or those struggling with pain, it might not be enough for lightweight side sleepers.

Is Helix Midnight Good for Pain Relief?

The Helix Midnight provides excellent support with enough contouring for pressure relief. Sleepers are unlikely to sink too deeply into the mattress, so you can experience good spine alignment throughout the night. The coils support the upper layers and your body, holding all parts equally so that there’s no excess sinkage that could cause back, hip, or shoulder pain.

Back Pain

People with back pain need a mattress that can keep the spine in alignment. We found that the Helix Midnight does this well. The medium to slightly firm feel should allow the spine to remain straight by preventing the hips and shoulders from sinking too far in. That being said, if you’re a heavier sleeper, you should take into account your sleep position when considering this mattress. For example, we think heavier stomach sleepers could wind up exacerbating their back pain on this mattress.

Hip Pain

Hip pain can grow worse if your bed is too soft or too firm. After Emma tested the Helix Midnight, she confirmed that it can provide a good balance of the kind of pressure relief and support needed to alleviate hip pain — though the extent of this relief depends on your weight and body type.

Shoulder Pain

People with shoulder pain should sleep on their back to take the pressure off this area. We think the Helix Midnight is a good mattress for back sleepers, especially those weighing 130 to 230 pounds. Plus, the memory foam should help ease discomfort.

Check out our best mattresses for back pain and our top picks for the best mattresses for shoulder and hip pain

Support

5/5

The Helix Midnight is a good option for those seeking optimal support as it’s a hybrid with a medium-firm to slightly firm feel. After years of testing mattresses, we found that firmer beds are often better for support than those on the softer side. In addition, the Midnight is a hybrid mattress with sturdy coils that help keep the body aligned in different sleeping positions. The thicker-gauge coils on the side enhance edge support, which is especially beneficial for people who like to spread out.

Another Helix Midnight quality that stands out is the base layer under the coil unit. We found this gives the bed additional base support and structure, ensuring the upper layers can perform properly.

Motion Transfer

3/5

Motion isolation is important for those who share their bed with a partner, child, or pet. Anyone moving in your bed can disturb your sleep, so having a mattress with good motion isolation can help prevent this.

The Helix Midnight is a hybrid, so it doesn’t have the same motion isolation you’d expect from an all-foam mattress. This hybrid is on the firmer side and has two foam layers above the individually wrapped coils, so lightweight people may still get enough motion isolation. However, if your partner is heavier, we think you’re likely to feel them moving on the other side.

Temperature Regulation / Cooling

5/5

Cooling is crucial if you live in a warm climate, but it’s also important for those who naturally sleep hot regardless of the outside temperature. Hybrid mattresses are cooler than memory foam because of the coils that allow more airflow to keep the construction cool.

“We think this bed feels super cool, thanks to its coils,” said Emma. The Helix Midnight has a cover that promotes cooling, while the coils below will foster that extra airflow. Additionally, you can opt for the optional GlacioTex cooling cover for a slightly higher price.

Bounce

4/5

People who change positions or have mobility issues should like the bounce this Helix provides. Although it’s a slightly firm mattress, it gives a bit of pushback to assist with moving and getting in and out of the bed. “This bed definitely has good response and bounce,” Emma said “I can move and adjust positions on it, no problem.”

Edge Support

4/5

Hybrids usually have good edge support if the coils go from one edge to the other. The Midnight has thicker-gauge coils along the sides, which enhances the edge support and allows you to sit and sleep near the edge without feeling like you’d roll off.

Emma pointed out, “This mattress has reinforced steel coils around the perimeter, and it shows. We don’t feel like we’re gonna fall off the bed, even right up on the edge of the mattress.”

Performance for Couples

4/5

We think the Helix Midnight is a viable mattress for couples, as it has good edge support and bounce. In addition, the mattress can handle up to 1,000 pounds, which is good if you and your partner are both plus-size sleepers. The bounce, which comes from the coil unit, should be good for sexually active couples.

On the other hand, we think some may not like Midnight’s lack of motion isolation. The two foam layers should isolate motion well enough if your partner is a lighter person who doesn’t move a lot while sleeping. However, if they’re heavy and restless, we suggest an all-foam bed with better motion isolation.

Helix Midnight Mattress: Preference-based Features

Two Cover Options

This bed comes with a Breathe Knit Cover included. We found this cover to be gentle on the skin and comfortable, but not really effective at cooling, which is something to keep in mind if you’re a hot sleeper. For hot sleepers, the company offers an additional cover option called the GlacioTex™ pillow top.

Made in the USA

Helix mattresses are manufactured in the company’s factory in Arizona.

Adjustable Base Compatible

This mattress works with different bed foundations and frames, including adjustable bases for those who want to customize their sleeping experience a bit more.

Luxe Upgrade Available

According to Emma this mattress is a “killer value for the money”. However, if you have a higher budget and want a mattress with more bells and whistles, we suggest you look at the Luxe version of the Helix Midnight mattress.

Construction: What’s Inside the Helix Midnight?

The Helix Midnight is 11.5 inches tall and has four layers, including a Soft Touch cover and a bottom cover. The surface is breathable and soft to the touch, which adds to the overall comfort. In addition, you can opt for the GlacioTex™ cover if you’re a hot sleeper, as it’s a cooler option for those who sweat a lot.

The cover is stretchy, and the stitching is durable, so you shouldn’t notice any wear and tear for years. The following are the layers you can find under the cover.

A closer look at the Helix Midnight mattress construction
Take a look at the layers of coils and foam in the Helix Midnight
  • The comfort layer is made from Memory Plus Foam, which is a unique Helix design. The material is a high-density memory foam blend made to contour the body and provide a comfortable cushion for pressure relief.
  • The transition layer is made from high-grade poly foam. This material offers pressure relief and ergonomic support while providing a transition layer between the memory foam and coil unit.
  • The 8-inch coil unit is located below the poly foam layer. The coils are made from steel and are individually wrapped to help minimize motion transfer across the mattress. This bed has enhanced edge support lengthwise, which means the thicker-gauge coils are only added to the left and right side of the bed.
  • The base layer is made from DuraDense Foam and sits at the bottom of the Helix Midnight mattress. This foam is made to provide a supportive base and durability.

Unboxing & Off-Gassing

The Helix Midnight mattress comes rolled in a box, which makes it easy to move from your door to the bedroom. Once you have it near the bed frame, open the box and place the rolled mattress on the frame. Remove the plastic, and the bed will unroll. You can see our team unpacking the mattress in Emma’s video review if you need more guidance on how best to do this.

As is usually the case with bed-in-a-box mattresses, it takes a while for the bed to decompress and reach its full size. The Helix Midnight should reach its full size in about 45 minutes.

When it comes to off-gassing, we noticed a slight odor when we first removed the packaging. The smell should dissipate in a week, but you can speed up the process by airing the mattress in a well-ventilated room and without any bedding.

Certifications

  • Eco-Friendly Certifications – The foams in this bed are  CertiPUR-US® certified. CertiPUR-US® is a third-party program that ensures the foams meet rigorous health and safety standards. This means they don’t contain harmful substances like ozone depleters, PBDEs, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and phthalates. They should also have low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions. This bed is also GREENGUARD Gold certified for low chemical emissions.

Coupons, Trials, Warranties, and Shipping

  • Shipping – Shipping is free within the United States. Helix ships mattresses to Canada for an additional fee.
  • White-Glove Delivery – Helix offers an Old Mattress Removal service, but this is currently suspended due to COVID-19 safety concerns. However, this service is still available in California.
  • Trial – Helix offers a 100-night trial for customers to test how the Midnight mattress performs and fits their needs.
  • Warranty – This mattress comes with a 10-year warranty.
  • Return Policy – Returns are free within the 100-night trial. One thing to keep in mind is that only two mattresses can be returned per household or customer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of mattress is the Helix Midnight?

The Helix Midnight is a hybrid mattress that features a combination of 8-inch coils, memory foam, and poly foam in its construction. We think this hybrid construction gives a balance of support and pressure relief, along with qualities like edge support, bounce, and cooling.

Where can I buy a Helix Midnight mattress?

You can buy a Helix Midnight mattress online, directly from Helix. They’ll box up the mattress and send it to your address so that you don’t have to handle transporting it to your home.

Where can I try out a Helix Midnight mattress?

There are two ways to try out a Helix Midnight mattress before you make it a permanent fixture in your bedroom: you can test it at home for a 100-night trial, or you can lie down on it inside one of Helix’s partner showrooms.

The 100-night trial begins after you’ve ordered your Helix Midnight. You then have 100 nights to snooze on the mattress and decide if it’s a good match for your sleep needs. If not, you can return the mattress to Helix for a full refund—they’ll even coordinate the mattress pickup for you.

As mentioned, the other option is to visit one of the brand’s partner showrooms, where certain mattress models are displayed and free to test out. Not every Helix model is available at these showrooms, but the Midnight is often featured. However, because a quick lie-down (or even a quick nap) isn’t as thorough of an experiment as actually sleeping on a mattress for multiple nights, we recommend taking advantage of the 100-night trial.

Is the Helix Midnight hot?

We didn’t find the Helix Midnight to run hot, and for that reason, we think it should be a good option for hot sleepers. The mattress has a breathable cover, and there’s an option to choose the GlacioTex™ cooling cover to further enhance the cool-to-the-touch feel. In addition, the upper layers are unlikely to overheat thanks to the coils that allow air to circulate.

Is the Helix Midnight too firm?

The Helix Midnight is rated 6-7 out of 10 on our firmness scale, which means it feels medium to slightly firm, depending on your weight. We think this firmness level should fit many sleepers, as it allows some sinkage to prevent pressure buildup without taking away from support.

Our Verdict

After testing the Helix Midnight mattress, we think it’s a great mattress option for many people. This bed has plenty of excellent features, such as a breathable cover, durable coils, two foam layers, and an optional cooling cover. We think the medium to slightly firm feel makes it a good match for people with back pain, as well as average-weight sleepers in general and  some lightweight and heavy folks.

In addition, the Midnight has an affordable price, a long trial, and a 10-year warranty. All the Midnight’s memory foam layers are certified as free of chemicals and toxins, so the mattress is a safe option for consumers. Overall, this bed earned a 4.2 out of 5.
