Who We Recommend The Sleep Number 360® m7 For:

  • Memory foam fans who want customization – If you want a combination of pressure-relieving memory foam and the ability to customize your bed’s firmness, the m7 could be a great choice for you. It’s also Sleep Number’s only memory foam bed.

  • Hot sleepers – Beds with foam layers are known for sleeping hot, but this bed features cooling memory foam and a breathable cover to assist with temperature regulation.

  • Couples – Couples should benefit from this bed’s good edge support, great motion isolation, cooling, and DualAir technology, the latter of which allows you to customize firmness on each side of the bed – pretty handy if you and your partner have different preferences.

Who We Don’t Recommend The Sleep Number 360® m7 For:

  • Budget shoppers – At 3,899 dollars for a Queen, this bed isn’t a cheap mattress, as the high-tech features come at a cost.

  • Those not interested in smart technology – Sleep Number beds feature a whole heap of technology, which is ideal for tech nerds, but not worth the spend for those who are uninterested in sleep tracking or people who might find the technology hard to get their head around. A more traditional memory foam mattress might be more suitable.

First Impressions: Firmness & Feel

Firmness Scale: Adjustable

Please remember that firmness is a subjective characteristic and your shape will dictate how you experience a bed. A heavier person whose weight can more easily push through softer comfort and support layers may experience a bed as softer than a lightweight person. The way you are shaped could also play a role here. Consider your weight, shape, and size when evaluating firmness scores.

We rate mattress firmness on a scale from 1 to 10, with 10 being the firmest, but as the Sleep Number 360® m7 offers adjustable support, it’s hard to give it a specific rating. Sleep Number beds offer 20 firmness levels – called Sleep Numbers. Firmness is adjusted via a hose and pump, which inflates/deflates each air chamber accordingly, and this can be automatically adjusted throughout the night with the Responsive Air™ feature.

Side and back sleepers should be able to find a Sleep Number that provides adequate support, but stomach sleepers may prefer a bed with an overall firmer feel.

How Does It Feel?

This bed has a soft cover and does not feature a pillow top, so you’ll get that memory foam feel straight away. While the m7 offers decent sinkage, it’s more of a gentle cradle than a deep hug, but you should experience comfortable contouring and pressure relief across the body. The foam is slow-moving, which means it doesn’t offer much bounce, so it should appeal to classic memory foam fans who love to feel slightly ‘in’ the bed but not too much.

What We Like About the Sleep Number 360® m7

  • Responsive Air® technology – Combination sleepers require different support in different positions, and Sleep Number beds make automatic hourly adjustments to cater to your movements throughout the night.

  • Memory foam – The m7 is the only Sleep Number memory foam bed, and the gel memory foam offers great pressure relief and temperature regulation.

  • SleepIQ® sleep tracking – Pressure sensors in the mattress measure biometrics like breathing rate, heart rate, and movement to assess sleep quality, giving you a Sleep Score each morning.

Our Sleep Number 360® m7 Complaints

  • Responsive Air® feature can be noisy – Sleep Number’s auto-adjust feature can make a soft buzzing noise, which could be an issue for those who tend to wake up at the slightest sound.

  • Lack of stability – Some customers have complained about the memory foam layer shifting, especially when used with an adjustable base. Some owners also report that the mattress frequently loses air.

  • Very limited warranty – While the full cost of repair is covered in the first year of the 15-year warranty, customers have to pay 30 percent of the cost in the second year, with the percentage rising each year, eventually up to 85 percent in the final year.

Testing the Sleep Number 360® m7 Mattress: How it Performed

Testing mattresses is what we do best, and we look at multiple features that are valuable to shoppers, including support, pressure relief, cooling, motion isolation, bounce, and edge support. Along with that, we test the mattress in different sleep positions, giving us a thorough understanding of who the bed could work best for.

Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types

The Sleep Number 360® m7 has a maximum weight restriction of 400 pounds per air chamber. The Twin XL size has one air chamber, so it has a total weight capacity of 400 pounds, while Queen sizes and up feature two air chambers and have a maximum weight limit of 800 pounds.

Lightweight Sleepers (-130 lbs)★★★★★★★★☆
Average-Weight Sleepers (130-230 lbs)★★★★★★★☆☆
Heavyweight Sleepers (+230 lbs)★★★★★★☆☆☆

Side Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – This bed should be a treat for lightweight side sleepers, who could benefit from good support and soothing pressure relief from the gel memory foam.
  • Average Weight Sleepers – Average-weight side sleepers should experience a lot of comfort from this bed, thanks to the pressure-relieving gel memory foam, while still feeling well supported by the air chambers.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavyweight side sleepers should sink into the thick memory foam, finding comfortable pressure relief at the hips and shoulders.

Back Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight sleepers often experience beds as firmer than advertised, so they should be able to find a Sleep Number setting that provides the support needed in this position while feeling comfortably cushioned.
  • Average Weight Sleepers – Back sleepers of average weight should find this bed a treat, getting good support from the air system and pressure-relieving comfort from the gel memory foam.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – We think heavyweight back sleepers should be able to find the required support from a firmer Sleep Number setting while experiencing a nice hug from the memory foam.

Stomach Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Stomach sleepers require a lot of support at the hips, and we think many lighter-weight people could get the required support from this bed since they won’t sink as far into the thick comfort layer.
  • Average Weight Sleepers – Most average-weight stomach sleepers will likely not get the support they need from the thick memory foam, which could cause their hips to sink out of alignment with the rest of their spine.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – We think heavyweight stomach sleepers won’t feel supported enough on this mattress – even on a higher Sleep Number – and will probably find their hips sinking too far into the foam, which can lead to pain over time. A firmer mattress is advised.

Pressure Relief & Pain

Memory foam is designed to offer incredible pressure relief, and the gel-infused memory foam in the m7 does a great job of soothing sensitive areas, especially when side sleeping. Side sleepers should feel pleasantly contoured, with more of a gentle cradle than the deep hug that all-foam beds tend to offer. Back sleepers should also be able to find a Sleep Number setting that provides a balance of firm support and comfy cushioning for even weight distribution and a dreamy night’s sleep.

Back Pain – People who experience back pain should find themselves soothed on this bed, with the gel memory foam cradling their hips, providing lower back relief. However, stomach sleepers may find themselves bottoming out, which could exacerbate back pain.

Hip Pain – Side sleepers with hip pain will likely find a lot of relief on the m7, but some stomach sleepers may find themselves sinking too far into the foam, causing a buildup of pressure.

Shoulder Pain – We think this bed offers fantastic relief for side sleepers, who should feel comfortably cushioned at the shoulders.

Support

While all Sleep Number beds feature adjustable support, their range of firmness is affected by the amount and type of comfort layers that sit on top of the air support system. Sleep Number beds have a number in their name, and the higher the number, the more cushioning the bed provides – so, for example, the c2 will feel firmer than the i10 as it has a shallower comfort layer.

The 5-inch memory foam in the m7 cradles the body, offering good support with the air chambers for side and back sleepers, but we don’t think it offers adequate support for many stomach sleepers, even on a firmer setting.

Motion Transfer

If you’re a light sleeper and share a bed with a restless partner, you should make sure your mattress has good motion isolation. This means that any movement made by someone tossing and turning should stay on their half of the bed, leaving you undisturbed and sleeping soundly. Dual air chambers on the m7 make for great motion isolation, plus the thick memory foam layer helps prevent any further motion transfer.

Temperature Regulation / Cooling

The Sleep Number 360® m7 has a breathable cover to keep the surface of the mattress cool, as well as gel memory foam featuring CoolFit technology, which should prevent the thick foam layer from retaining body heat. We found this mattress slept pretty cool, which is of benefit for memory foam lovers who tend to sleep hot.

Performance for Couples

If you’re in the market for a bed that suits couples, then the m7 could be a hit, thanks to its DualAir technology, cooling features, great motion isolation, and good edge support. However, the bed may not be the best choice for stomach sleepers, so if you or your partner spend most of the night on your front, this is something to consider.

Many couples also like a responsive mattress for sex, and the m7 doesn’t offer much in the way of bounce. You could also find yourself falling victim to the Sleep Number ‘trench effect’, which is a gap that often occurs between two air chambers that are inflated to different levels. Not so much of a problem if you sleep far apart, but those who snuggle in the center could find it frustrating.

Preference-based Features

Adjustable Firmness

Sleep Number beds offer a choice of 20 firmness levels, ranging from 1 to 100, with 100 being the most firm. This can be programmed manually or via the Responsive Air™ feature, which allows the bed to adjust automatically while you sleep according to your movements.

Good Edge Support

Despite its thick comfort foam layer, the m7 offers good edge support, thanks to a high-density foam wall perimeter that allows you to sleep near the edge of the bed without feeling like you’re about to roll out. This is great for couples that love to spread out.

Sleep Tracking Technology

Every morning, the SleepIQ® app will give you a Sleep Score, letting you know how well you slept. This is calculated using biometrics taken from pressure sensors in the mattress, which assess heart rate, breathing rate, and movement.

Adjustable Base Compatible

You can use your own adjustable base or purchase one of Sleep Number’s three FlexFit™ models, which offer various enhancements like lighting under the bed, a ‘partner snore’ feature, and foot warming.

Construction: What’s Inside Sleep Number 360® m7?

The Sleep Number 360® m7 has an 11-inch profile, featuring a flat cover that’s made from rayon and polyester, which is designed to be soft and breathable.

  • Below the cover is a 5-inch comfort layer, made from two different types of memory foam. There’s a thick layer of gel-infused memory foam that offers dynamic contouring and pressure relief, as well as cooling. The CoolFit technology ensures that heat isn’t trapped in the layer, which can often happen with memory foam. Then there’s a layer of regular foam, offering further contouring and support.
  • The air chambers make up the support system (the Twin XL size only has one air chamber). The chambers are made from 24-gauge vulcanized rubber, with a cotton fabric exterior. These inflate or deflate, depending on your programmed firmness preference, and they can also adjust automatically if you turn on the Responsive Air™ feature. DualAir technology allows you to customize firmness on each side of the bed.
  • A high-density foam wall perimeter offers edge support.
  • A high-density foam pad makes up the base layer, giving the air chambers something to bounce off.

Sleep Number beds require a power source within five feet, as well as a wifi connection for the SleepIQ® sleep tracking technology. The bed can be controlled via your smartphone, but if your internet is out, you can adjust the bed using Bluetooth or the supplied remote.

Unboxing & Off-Gassing

Sleep Number requires you to purchase its premium delivery service (at a cost of 249 dollars), so you won’t have to install the bed yourself. Technicians will move your old mattress to another room, set up the new mattress, create your SleepIQ® account, and show you how to use everything. They’ll even take your old mattress away for recycling for an extra 49 dollars.

As with all memory foam beds, there’ll be an element of off-gassing, which is the result of chemical by-products escaping from the foam after being trapped in packaging. The odor isn’t the most pleasant, but it’s harmless and should disappear within a couple of days if left in a ventilated room.

Certifications

  • Eco-Friendly Certifications – The foams in this bed are CertiPUR-US® certified. CertiPUR-US® is a third-party program that ensures the foams meet rigorous health and safety standards. This means they don’t contain harmful substances like ozone depleters, PBDEs, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and phthalates. They should also have low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.

Coupons, Trials, Warranties, and Shipping

  • Shipping – Premium delivery must be purchased for 249 dollars. Technicians will move your old mattress to another room, build your new mattress, create your SleepIQ® account, and give you a demonstration on how to use the bed. They can take your old mattress away for recycling for an extra 49 dollars.
  • Trial – You’ll have 100 nights to figure out if you want to keep the bed.
  • Warranty – The Sleep Number 360® m7 comes with a 15-year limited warranty, which covers the full cost of repair in the first year. After that, you’ll have to pay a percentage of the cost, which starts at 30 percent in the second year and rises to 85 percent in the fifteenth year.
  • Return Policy – You can return the bed after 30 days, as long as it’s within the 100-night trial. However, return shipping must be arranged by the customer. Sleep Number offers a collection service for 249 dollars plus tax. A full refund (minus shipping fees) will be given.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a 360® Sleep Number cost?

360® Sleep Number beds vary in price, from 1,099 dollars for a c2 Queen to 5,399 dollars for an i10 or iLE Queen. These are for mattresses only, but the most expensive bed is the Climate360™, which includes a smart adjustable base and costs 9,999 dollars for a Queen.

What Sleep Number setting is best?

The best Sleep Number setting is subjective, but the company says the most popular setting is between 35 and 40. The settings range from 1 to 100, with 1 being incredibly soft and 100 being most firm. It can take some time to find the Sleep Number that works for you, and once you think you’ve found one, the brand recommends sticking with it for a few nights to see how you feel.

Why is my Sleep Number bed so loud?

Sleep Number beds adjust the firmness by inflating or deflating the air support chambers through a hose and pump system, which can make a soft buzzing noise that some people have reported as annoying. If you’re an exceptionally light sleeper and feel disturbed by the noise, you can turn the auto-adjust feature off.

Why does my Sleep Number feel like an air mattress?

Sleep Number beds are essentially luxury air mattresses, but the depth and type of comfort layer above the foam will change the overall feel. Beds in the Classic series feature less foam, so may feel firmer (and more like a traditional air bed), while the Innovation series features the most foam. If you’re looking for a memory foam feel with adjustable air technology the m7 (in this review) could be the one for you.

Overall Summary

The Sleep Number 360® m7 is a smart bed that combines the versatility of adjustable air support with the exceptional pressure relief of memory foam, which could be a great choice for back and side sleepers.

Side Sleepers

5/5

We think most side sleepers in all weight categories could really enjoy this bed, with its thick gel memory foam layer offering dynamic contouring and fantastic pressure relief. Pressure can often build up at the hips and shoulder when side sleeping, but we don’t think that will be a problem on the m7.

Back Sleepers

5/5

Lots of back sleepers prefer a medium-firm bed that provides accurate lumbar support, and most people should be able to find a Sleep Number setting that caters to their needs in this position. The layer of thick gel memory foam should gently cradle the hips, keeping them elevated while relieving pressure on the spine.

Stomach Sleepers

2/5

Stomach sleepers usually need a firm bed to stop their hips from sagging out of alignment, which makes memory foam a tricky choice for many front sleepers. While we think some lightweight people could find the support they need, most stomach sleepers will likely find themselves bottoming out in the foam, causing lower back pain.

Combination Sleepers

3/5

This bed could be a good choice for people who switch between their side and back only, but we think the foam isn’t dense enough to keep many people’s hips elevated for stomach sleeping, which will take the spine out of alignment and cause pain over time. The memory foam sinkage could also make changing sleeping positions a little tricky.

Couples

4/5

Couples could love the great motion isolation, good edge support, and cooling, as well as the ability to adjust the firmness on both sides of the bed. However, this bed has minimal bounce, which may make it unsuitable for sex. It’s not ideal for many front sleepers, which could be an issue if you or your partner are strict stomach sleepers.

Heavy Sleepers

4/5

Heavier sleepers usually require a firmer bed, and we think the m7 should be able to provide that with its adjustable firmness and high-density foam base layer, which offers additional support. However, most stomach sleepers will likely find their hips sagging into the memory foam layer, which could cause misalignment of the spine, leading to aches and pains over time.

Lightweight Sleepers

4/5

The adjustable firmness and thick memory foam could make this bed a great choice for lightweight sleepers. Side sleepers should experience fantastic pressure relief from the gel memory foam, while back sleepers will likely be able to find a nice balance of support and cushioning. However, some stomach sleepers may prefer a firmer bed, though many should feel adequately supported.

Average Weight Sleepers

4/5

This bed has a lot of potential for average-weight sleepers, who should have enough weight to sink into the thick memory foam for fantastic pressure relief, particularly when side sleeping. However, stomach sleepers tend to need a firmer bed, and we think many will find the plush memory foam doesn’t offer enough support to keep the hips raised.

Overall Value

3/5

Although it comes with interesting sleep technology, the m7 will cost much more than many other high-quality (and more budget-friendly) memory foam mattresses. This bed also lost points for the very limited warranty, which could end up costing you more money over the years if things go wrong.

Our Verdict

The Sleep Number 360® m7 is a smart bed that combines adjustable firmness with the dynamic pressure relief of memory foam, and it is the only Sleep Number bed that contains memory foam. If you’re worried about overheating, the foam features CoolFit technology to help regulate body temperature.

We think it could be a great option for side and back sleepers and couples in those categories, due to its good edge support, great motion isolation, and ability to customize fitness on both sides of the bed. However, stomach sleepers might be better off on a Sleep Number with a firmer feel, like one of the beds in the Classic series.
