Sleep Number sells a range of smart air beds that all offer adjustable firmness, sleep quality tracking, and DualAir technology (in larger sizes), which allows you to customize firmness on each side of the bed.
The Sleep Number 360® p5 is the brand’s most popular mattress and is in the mid-range Performance series. This range offers slightly plusher comfort layers than the cheaper Classic series and shallower comfort layers than the more luxurious Innovation series. While the bed is pretty versatile thanks to its adjustable firmness, it’s not suitable for everyone. Read on to find out if you could be a good match.

Who We Recommend The Sleep Number 360® p5 For:
- Back sleepers – This is one of the more medium-firm Sleep Numbers. As such, it could work well for back sleepers, who should be able to find a firmness setting that gives them great support with comfortable cushioning.
- People with back pain – There are loads of online reviews from people with back pain who say their pain decreased significantly when sleeping on this bed, thanks to the firm support and plush pressure relief.
- Couples – Couples could love the DualAir technology, motion isolation, and good edge support. However, if you tend to sleep hot when sharing a bed, then this may not be the best choice for you due to its lack of temperature-regulating materials.
Who We Don’t Recommend The Sleep Number 360® p5 For:
- Hot sleepers – The p5 is the only Sleep Number bed in the Performance series that doesn’t offer cooling technology. While air beds tend to sleep cooler than all-foam beds, those who run hot could find body heat getting trapped in the foam comfort layer, causing discomfort.
- Side sleepers – Though this bed does offer a versatile firmness and some pressure relief from the 4-inch comfort foam, we think its overall medium-firm feel and relatively shallow comfort layer don’t offer enough cushioning for most side sleepers.
First Impressions: Firmness & Feel
Firmness Scale: Adjustable
Please remember that firmness is a subjective characteristic and your shape will dictate how you experience a bed. A heavier person whose weight can more easily push through softer comfort and support layers may experience a bed as softer than a lightweight person. The way you are shaped could also play a role here. Consider your weight, shape, and size when evaluating firmness scores.
As a guide, we rate mattress firmness on a scale from 1 to 10 (with 1 being the softest), though it’s hard to give the p5 a definitive number, as it’s designed to be adjustable. However, we would say this Sleep Number model has an overall medium-firm feel due to its firm air support system and relatively thin comfort layer (compared to other Sleep Number models).
There are 20 firmness options, which are called Sleep Numbers, and these can be programmed manually or automatically. Programming them automatically utilizes the brand’s Responsive Air™ technology, which changes the firmness to adapt to your sleeping position.
How Does It Feel?
The p5 is one of Sleep Number’s least-cushioned beds, with its 4-inch comfort layer (compared to the luxurious i10, which has a 7-inch comfort layer). Even on a lower Sleep Number setting, this makes it more of a medium-firm bed, though the five-zoned PlushFit foam does provide contouring across the body, offering a gentle cradle. This bed doesn’t offer much bounce, so it may not be suitable for those with limited mobility or couples who prefer a responsive mattress for sex.
What We Like About the Sleep Number 360® p5
- Good pressure relief – The p5’s five-zoned contouring foam offers good pressure relief for back and stomach sleepers, gently cradling the body in all the right places.
- Adjustable firmness – If you’re indecisive and can’t settle on a firmness rating, or you and your partner have wildly different preferences, the p5’s 20 firmness options could be music to your ears.
- SleepIQ® app – Do you go to bed at a decent time but still wake up feeling groggy? Then you could benefit from the SleepIQ® app’s sleep tracking technology, which uses mattress pressure sensors to assess sleep quality, giving you insight into what’s going wrong and how to improve your sleep.
Our Sleep Number 360® p5 Complaints
- Price – While this is one of Sleep Number’s cheaper beds, it’s still pretty costly considering it has a simple comfort layer and no cooling technology.
- Gap in the middle – Dual air chambers are great for customizable firmness but not so great when a gap appears in the middle. This ‘trench effect’ could make it difficult for couples to sleep together in the center of the bed.
- Delivery and returns aren’t free – Delivery costs 249 dollars and should you decide to return the bed, you’ll either have to arrange the return yourself or pay Sleep Number 249 dollars plus tax to collect it. This means you could end up paying over 500 dollars to test a bed you don’t like.
Testing the Sleep Number 360® p5 Mattress: How it Performed
To help you decide whether a mattress could suit your needs, we put them through a series of tests assessing qualities like cooling, motion isolation, bounce, edge support, support, and pressure relief. We also make sure to see how comfortable the bed is for side, back, and stomach sleeping.
Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types
Each Sleep Number air chamber supports a maximum weight of 400 pounds. This means the Twin and Twin XL (which have one air chamber) can hold a total weight of 400 pounds, while Full size and up (which have two air chambers) can handle 800 pounds total.
Weight | Side Sleepers | Back Sleepers | Stomach Sleepers |
---|---|---|---|
Lightweight Sleepers (-130 lbs) | ★☆☆ | ★★★ | ★★★ |
Average-Weight Sleepers (130-230 lbs) | ☆☆☆ | ★★★ | ★★★ |
Heavyweight Sleepers (+230 lbs) | ☆☆☆ | ★★☆ | ★★☆ |
Side Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – We don’t particularly recommend this mattress for most side sleepers due to the lack of adequate cushioning, but lightweight people may be comfortable as they may not be heavy enough to sink down to the support layer.
- Average Weight Sleepers – This bed probably isn’t the best choice for average-weight side sleepers, who could find themselves waking up with hip and shoulder pain from the shallow comfort layer not offering enough pressure relief.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – We don’t recommend this bed for heavier side sleepers, who will likely sink into the support layer, experiencing pressure at the shoulders and hips.
Back Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – This bed could be a great choice for lightweight back sleepers, who should be able to find a Sleep Number setting that offers firm support, while the PlushFit foam provides pressure-relieving contouring.
- Average Weight Sleepers – Average-weight people who sleep on their backs should experience a great mix of comfortable cushioning and spinal support from this bed.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – We think most heavyweight sleepers will be able to find enough support from one of the higher Sleep Number settings, though some may find themselves sinking too far into the comfort foam, which could cause pressure to accumulate.
Stomach Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight stomach sleepers should experience good comfort and support on the p5, with the foam layer offering cushioning and the air chambers keeping their spine in alignment.
- Average Weight Sleepers – Average-weight stomach sleepers should also find this bed offers adequate support while the contouring foam delivers pressure relief.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Many plus-size stomach sleepers should find good support on this bed, but those significantly heavier may find that a mattress with high-density foam (rather than the p5’s plush foam) can provide better comfort.
Pressure Relief & Pain
While the p5 doesn’t offer the thickest of comfort layers compared to other Sleep Number models, it does feature five-zoned PlushFit foam, which provides contouring and pressure relief at the head, neck, shoulders, lower back, hips, and feet. Although this seems to work well for stomach and back sleepers, we don’t think it offers enough pressure relief for most side sleepers, who will likely experience hip and shoulder pain if they sleep in this position too long.
Back Pain – This bed has rave reviews from those with back pain, with many reporting a huge decrease in pain thanks to its medium-firm feel, which should keep the lumbar area supported and the spine in neutral alignment.
Hip Pain – While this bed does feature five-zoned contouring, we don’t think the comfort layer is thick enough to offer adequate cushioning at the hips, particularly for side sleepers.
Shoulder Pain – Again, side sleepers could experience shoulder pain due to the lack of cushioning, so we’d recommend a plusher mattress for strict side sleepers.
Support
The Sleep Number 360® p5’s support comes from its air support system, which can be inflated or deflated to customize the firmness. While there are 20 firmness options, we’d say this bed has a medium-firm feel overall, making it suitable for most back and stomach sleepers, who should be able to find a setting that offers the required spinal support.
Edge support is provided by a sturdy high-density foam perimeter wall, which keeps the sides of the bed feeling secure. Heavyweight sleepers will likely feel well supported on a firmer Sleep Number setting, but personal preference will dictate whether the comfort foam layer is thick enough to offer adequate cushioning.
Motion Transfer
The p5 offers great motion isolation, especially in models that feature two air chambers (Full size and up). This means that any movement your partner makes on their side of the bed shouldn’t make its way to yours, which should benefit light sleepers who share their bed with restless partners.
Temperature Regulation / Cooling
While air beds tend to sleep cool, this mattress doesn’t feature any extra cooling or temperature-regulating properties, which could mean that heat gets trapped in the foam layer. This shouldn’t be an issue for those who often feel chilly at night, but those who sleep hot or live in a warm climate would likely be better off on a cooling mattress.
Performance for Couples
This bed offers great motion isolation and edge support, which can be ideal for couples. Adjustable firmness and DualAir technology make it incredibly versatile, which is handy if you and your partner can’t agree on a firmness rating. However, with little to no bounce, it’s not the best mattress for sex, and its lack of cooling features may be a disadvantage for those who sleep hot when sharing a bed.

Preference-based Features
Adjustable Firmness
Sleep Number 360® beds are designed to offer adjustable firmness, with 20 options to choose from. Responsive Air™ technology even allows the bed to alter firmness hourly while you sleep, based on your movements, which are detected by pressure sensors in the mattress.
Sleep Tracking
The SleepIQ® app uses mattress pressure sensors to assess sleep quality, based on your heart rate, breathing rate, and movements. Each morning, you’ll be greeted with a Sleep Score, letting you know how well you slept and how you can improve your sleep.
Good Edge Support
With its relatively thin comfort layer, sturdy air chambers, and high-density foam perimeter wall, we found the p5 offered good edge support, which means you should feel secure when sitting on the edge or sleeping close to the sides. This is great news for those with limited mobility or couples who like to utilize the whole surface area of the bed.
Adjustable Base Compatible
You can use your own adjustable base or purchase one of Sleep Number’s three models of FlexFit™ smart bases (in selected sizes). Please note, these bases are non-returnable and not part of the 100-night trial.
Construction: What’s Inside Sleep Number 360® p5?
The Sleep Number 360® p5 is a 10-inch smart air bed in Sleep Number’s Performance series that features a rayon and polypropylene blend cover.
The bed has 20 firmness options, and these are controlled through the supplied remote control or the SleepIQ® app. Responsive Air™ technology gives you the option of allowing the chamber to adjust the firmness while you sleep based on your movements, which are detected by pressure sensors in the bed. These sensors also measure biometrics to assess sleep quality and deliver insights via the SleepIQ® app.
- The comfort layer is 4 inches thick and is made from PlushFit foam, which features five contouring zones, offering pressure relief at the head, neck, shoulders, lower back, hips, and feet.
- The support layer is made up of one air chamber in Twin and Twin XL sizes and two air chambers in Full size and up. These chambers are made from 24-gauge vulcanized rubber with a cotton fabric cover, and they can be inflated or deflated to adjust the firmness via a hose and pump system that’s located inside the mattress.
- A perimeter wall made of high-density foam offers edge support.
All Sleep Number beds require an electrical source within five feet, as well as a wifi connection for the SleepIQ® technology. Should your wifi fail, the bed can be controlled with the remote control or Bluetooth.
Unboxing & Off-Gassing
With Sleep Number beds, it’s mandatory to purchase their premium delivery service, which costs 249 dollars. Technicians will move your old mattress to another room, set up your mattress, create your SleepIQ® account, and show you how to use the bed.
There shouldn’t be too much off-gassing (a harmless smell that occurs when chemical by-products escape from foam), but there may be a slight odor, so keep the room ventilated. You can sleep on your new bed right away.
Certifications
- Eco-Friendly Certifications – The foams in this bed are CertiPUR-US® certified. CertiPUR-US® is a third-party program that ensures the foams meet rigorous health and safety standards. This means they don’t contain harmful substances like ozone depleters, PBDEs, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and phthalates. They should also have low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.
Coupons, Trials, Warranties, and Shipping
- Shipping – Sleep Number requires you to purchase its premium delivery service for 249 dollars. This includes the removal of your old mattress to another room, set-up of your new mattress, creation of your SleepIQ® account, and a demonstration of how to use the bed. This service is available to select areas in all 50 states and may be available outside of these areas for an additional fee. Your old mattress can also be taken away and recycled for an extra 49 dollars.
- Trial – You’ll have 100 nights to sleep on your decision.
- Warranty – This bed comes with a 15-year limited warranty. The warranty covers all costs of repair or replacement in the first year, and then you’ll be expected to pay 30 percent of the cost in the second year. This rises incrementally each year, so you’ll end up paying 85 percent in the fifteenth year.
- Return Policy – It’s important to note that returns aren’t free – you can return your bed after 30 nights and within 100 nights for a full refund (minus shipping fees), but you’ll have to arrange return shipping. Alternatively, Sleep Number will collect the bed for 249 dollars plus tax.

Overall Summary
The Sleep Number 360® p5 is a fairly versatile smart air bed and a particularly good choice for stomach and back sleepers, who should appreciate its medium-firm feel and pressure-relieving contouring foam.
Side Sleepers
2/5
We don’t recommend this bed for most side sleepers, who will likely find the relatively thin comfort layer and overall medium-firm feel doesn’t offer enough pressure relief at the hips and shoulders. Some lightweight people could be fine, but the heavier you are, the more likely it is that you’ll experience joint pain.
Back Sleepers
4/5
Overall, we think this bed could be a fantastic choice for most back sleepers, with its adjustable firmness and five-zoned contouring foam, which should leave you feeling well-supported and comfortably cushioned. However, some heavyweight people may find the foam isn’t dense enough to prevent them from bottoming out onto the support layer.
Stomach Sleepers
4/5
Most stomach sleepers should be able to find a Sleep Number setting that provides adequate firm support and pleasant pressure relief. However, we think some heavier sleepers might prefer a bed that has denser foam in the comfort layer, as this would offer better contouring for that body weight.
Combination Sleepers
3/5
Responsive Air™ technology is great for combination sleepers, as it adjusts firmness while you sleep. This bed could be ideal for those who switch between their stomach and back, but if you spend a lot of the night on your side, you may experience discomfort. The bed’s lack of bounce may also make it a little difficult to change positions.
Couples
4/5
The p5 suits a wide range of sleepers thanks to its adjustable firmness and DualAir technology, making it suitable for couples with differing firmness preferences. It’s also got good motion isolation and edge support, but it lacks cooling, which could leave couples overheating. It’s also not the best mattress for sex, due to its lack of bounce.
Heavy Sleepers
3/5
While this bed could suit many heavyweight stomach and back sleepers, we think some would be better off on a bed with a high-density foam comfort layer, which would offer better pressure relief. We don’t recommend the p5 for heavy side sleepers for the same reason – the PlushFit foam is unlikely to offer the necessary contouring for their body weight.
Lightweight Sleepers
4/5
The p5 is a great option for most lightweight sleepers, who should be able to find a Sleep Number setting that provides adequate support while still experiencing good pressure relief from the five-zoned contouring foam. However, some side sleepers may find the foam doesn’t offer the required relief in this sleeping position and may prefer a softer bed.
Average Weight Sleepers
4/5
This bed could be an excellent choice for average-weight stomach and back sleepers, with its medium-firm feel and pressure-relieving contouring foam. However, we think most side sleepers would be more comfortable on a bed with a thicker comfort layer, which would provide more cushioning at the shoulders and hips.
Overall Value
3/5
At 2,699 dollars for a Queen size, the Sleep Number’s p5 bed isn’t the cheapest 10-inch mattress out there. There are also multiple complaints about the bed malfunctioning, which could be an issue with the very limited warranty. Add to that the extra shipping cost, which is usually free with other mattress brands.
Our Verdict
If you’re a stomach or back sleeper looking for an adjustable smart bed with good support and plenty of pressure relief, the Sleep Number 360® p5 could be well worth a try – it must be the brand’s most popular mattress for a reason! However, we’d urge side sleepers to proceed with caution, as we think you’ll find better pressure relief on a bed with a plusher comfort layer. Hot sleepers who like the sound of this bed should take a look at the pSE or p6 – these models are also in the Performance series but feature additional cooling technology.
