If you have your mind set on a Casper mattress, you probably already know they offer durable beds that can accommodate many types of sleepers. That being said, not all Casper mattresses were made equal – and even the slightest and seemingly unimportant difference could be a nudge in the right direction.
While Casper’s Original mattress offers fantastic versatility, the advanced ergonomic design of the Casper Wave Hybrid appears to be unmatched if you want to wake up pain-free. We’ve created a detailed comparison of these two Casper models so you can make an informed decision without having to scroll for hours.

Who I’d Recommend the Casper For
- People who need a versatile mattress – If you tend to switch up sleeping positions during the night, the Casper has a versatile feel with strong ratings for stomach, side, and back sleeping.
- Hot sleepers who prefer foam mattresses – Thanks to its innovative AirScape™ cooling system, Casper’s most popular mattress could be a top choice for hot sleepers who prefer the feel of an all-foam bed.
- People with upper-body tension – The soft foam strategically placed around the upper body area should help release that built-up tension you’ve been carrying in your shoulders.

Who I’d Recommend the Casper Wave Hybrid For
- People with back pain – The Casper Wave Hybrid is advertised as their most ergonomic mattress, specifically designed to lift your lower back and waist for better body alignment, which should help with back pain.
- Combination sleepers – We found that the Wave’s use of both foam and coils makes it easier to change positions, a significant plus for combination sleepers.
- Back sleepers – The Casper Wave Hybrid rates exceptionally well for back sleeping thanks to its advanced Zoned Support™ Max design.
Comparing Casper vs Casper Wave: Top Similarities
- AirScape™ foam – Both of these Casper mattresses feature AirScape™ foams, which have a more breathable construction to help prevent heat buildup.
- Zoned Support™ – Both mattresses feature zoning throughout the bed to provide firmer lifting around the sleeper’s heavier areas and a softer feel around lighter areas.
- Firmness level – We rated the Casper and Casper Wave Hybrid each at a 6 out of 10 on our firmness scale, giving them both a medium firmness.
Comparing Casper vs Casper Wave: Key Differences
- Cooling – While both mattresses offer breathable AirScape™ foam, the Casper Wave Hybrid goes above and beyond by incorporating as many as three AirScape™ layers and cooling gel. Plus, the coil layer will deliver additional airflow.
- Support systems – With the Casper, you get the standard Zoned Support™ system and a durable foam base. The Casper Wave, on the other hand, takes it one step further with Zoned Support™ Max, extra foam layers, and an innerspring unit, providing enhanced support and cushioning.
- Supportive gel pods – Yet another important structural difference between the original Casper and the Casper Wave is that the Casper Wave includes a layer of innovative gel pods for advanced support.
Comparing Firmness, Support & Feel
Firmness
On a scale from 1 to 10, our firmness rating for both of these Casper mattresses is 6, which places them both in the mid-range. The perfect firmness for you will depend not only on your personal preferences but your weight, as well.
It is safe to say that the medium firmness of both Casper and Casper Wave Hybrid is an ideal compromise between reliable support and comfortable sinkage.
Support
The advanced design of the Casper Wave Hybrid should provide even better support for your waist, hips, and lower back. This should result in an optimal sleeping posture, making the Casper Wave Hybrid a top choice for sleepers who struggle with back pain.
While the Casper Original mattress does not include coils, gel pods, or enhanced zoning, it is still a reliable option as it features a three-zone support system — soft foam around the shoulders and firmer foam supporting the lower body.
Feel
Being that both of these mattresses fall into the mid-range firmness category, the overall feel shouldn’t be too firm or too soft. However, this also depends on your body type, as lightweight sleepers will find it firmer than those who weigh more.
The top layer of the mattresses should feel cool due to the unique AirScape™ cooling system. Since the Casper Wave’s poly foam is also infused with a special cooling gel, it may offer better temperature control than the original Casper.
Comparing Sinkage and Bounce
Both of these medium-firm mattresses offer a gentle cradle, which means that you can experience a certain amount of sinkage. However, your body will likely lie on top of the mattress rather than sink into it.
While the durable base of the Casper mattress should produce a small amount of bounce, you can expect more pushback from the Casper Wave Hybrid because of its innerspring and latex layers. As an all-foam mattress, Casper will lack the innerspring feel of the Casper Wave Hybrid. Therefore, if you’re someone who enjoys a bed with more buoyancy, you’ll likely prefer the Casper Wave.
Comparing Motion Transfer
As an all-foam bed offering top-notch motion isolation, Casper is an excellent choice for light sleepers. The memory foam structure can buffer the vibrations caused by the movement of your partner or pet, ensuring restful, uninterrupted sleep.
The Casper Wave has resilient springs that will also add some bounce. This means that you can expect a reasonable amount of motion transfer across the bed. Still, keep in mind that the Wave also has four foam layers that should muffle, and the springs are pocketed to further curb motion transfer.
While both beds rate well for minimizing motion transfer, the Casper Original should perform better here because of its all-foam structure.
Comparing Cooling
Casper’s unique AirScape™ foam design lets air circulate better, helping to prevent that uncomfortable feeling of overheating at night. While the Casper Original has one layer of this breathable foam, the Wave Hybrid has three for even more airflow.
The Wave Hybrid also infuses cooling gel into its top foam layer, and its coils will deliver extra airflow throughout the mattress. Casper’s flagship bed rates well for cooling, especially considering its all-foam structure, but between these two products, we think hot sleepers will prefer the advanced cooling features of the Wave Hybrid.
Comparing Construction (Materials & Quality)
Casper Construction
The Casper Original is an 11-inch high polyurethane foam mattress with a CertiPUR-US® certification. This certification means that you’re investing in a safe mattress.
The Casper mattress features a polyester cover, which should provide long-lasting durability.
- The top layer of the Casper Original features the perforated polyurethane foam known as AirScape™ for better airflow and regulated body temperature. The foam layer beneath the cover provides some bounce, but not enough that it should create too much motion transfer for light sleepers.
- The middle is a 2-inch-thick layer of Zoned Support™ memory foam with three targeted ergonomic zones for optimal body positioning and adequate support for different body areas. This means there’s firmer foam around the heavier body parts and softer foam under the shoulder and knee areas.
- The base layer represents the foundation of the bed, which is why it is made out of denser foam for support and durability.
Casper Wave Construction
Standing 13 inches tall, this ergonomically-designed bed includes a cover made out of recycled polyester, upcycled cotton,, rayon, and lycra.
- The first foam layer is AirScape™ poly foam, which is also infused with gel for additional cooling.
- The second layer is made of latex. While latex is naturally temperature-neutral, this layer also features Casper’s perforated Airscape™ design to further prevent heat from remaining trapped around you.
- The middle unit features a layer of Airscape™ memory foam that will not only contour your shape to help combat pressure buildup but this foam is also divided into three zones for an optimal sleeping posture.
- Further down you will find the gel pods for added support beneath your lower back and waist. This layer also features Zoned Support™ Max to better support your heavier areas.
- The base layer includes durable springs and a firm foam encasement for edge support.
Comparing Company Policies & Price

Final Thoughts
If price is a concern, the Casper Original is at least 1,000 dollars cheaper than the Wave Hybrid, making this bed the better choice for budget shoppers. Even though it’s less expensive, Casper’s flagship model still boasts great ergonomic support and cooling, especially for a foam bed.
On the other hand, the Wave Hybrid has impressive cooling features that could be a big seller for anyone struggling to sleep because they feel too hot at night. Additionally, the Wave Hybrid is going to provide more bounce for easier repositioning and stronger support because of the addition of coils.
