Editor’s note: Brooklyn Bedding has recently updated their EcoSleep mattress. The mattress no longer features a flippable design with two firmness levels. The links in this review will direct you to the current version of the EcoSleep. We will review the new model soon.
Can an eco-friendly mattress still offer comfort and support for a variety of sleepers?
That’s the idea behind the EcoSleep, a customizable mattress made with sustainable materials that are natural and organic. This unique bed combines two firmness levels into one handcrafted mattress, allowing you to experience an entirely new feel with one simple flip.
This hybrid model is manufactured in Phoenix, Arizona, by Brooklyn Bedding, one of the original and most popular bed-in-a-box brands. Stuart, one of our mattress reviewers here at Sleep Advisor, tested this bed in person. In this review, we’ll go over what he found, focusing on the feel and firmness, as well as motion isolation, pressure relief, bounce, and other critical factors.

Who We Recommend The EcoSleep For:
- Eco-conscious shoppers – Made from natural materials, this sustainable bed is designed for those looking for a healthier place to rest their heads. Eco-conscious shoppers can have peace of mind that they are reducing their carbon footprint while sleeping on Rainforest Alliance-certified latex.
- Those who want a bouncy bed – With layers of natural latex foam surrounding 6 inches of individually encased Ascension™ coils, we think the responsive surface should offer easier transitioning for sleepers as well as bedroom activities.
- Sleepers who want versatile firmness – Having two levels of firmness in one bed means that you can find the side that works best for you. If one side is too firm or soft, flip the mattress over for an entirely new feel.
Who We Don’t Recommend The EcoSleep For:
- Petite side sleepers – Both sides of this bed are in the medium-firm to firm range, so they may not perform as well when it comes to relieving pressure on hips and shoulders. Sleepers on the heavier side may not have this problem, but the surface may not be soft enough for petite people. However, if you upgrade to the Luxe model, you get a plush zippered top that offers more cushioning.
- People who want motion isolation – “[The] motion transfer is significantly better than what you get with a traditional innerspring mattress,” according to Stuart. The individually encased coils are designed to minimize motion transfer, but latex does transfer motion more than memory foam does. This could be a problem for bed sharers, but adding the foam mattress topper may be a good solution.

First Impressions: Firmness & Feel
Firmness Scale: 5.5/10, 6.5/10
Please remember that firmness is a subjective characteristic and your shape will dictate how you experience a bed. A heavier person whose weight can more easily push through softer comfort and support layers may experience a bed as softer than a lightweight person. The way you are shaped could also play a role here. Consider your weight, shape, and size when evaluating firmness scores.
We rate mattress firmness on a scale between 1 and 10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest. The EcoSleep features two levels of firmness depending on which side you choose, offering both a medium and a firm sleep experience.
Latex tends to be firmer than other materials, so even the medium side is slightly firmer than what other mediums may feel like. We rated the medium side as a 5.5 out of 10 and the firm side as a 6.5 out of 10, placing both in the medium range.
How Does It Feel?
Lying on the medium side of this mattress may feel like a gentle hug with just enough comfort from the latex foam to adapt to your shape while still sleeping close to the surface. Both sides offer a lot of responsiveness, so you should never feel stuck when moving around or changing positions.
Upon testing this bed, Stuart pushed multiple times into the construction to see how the layers responded. You can also see this first-hand in his video review of the EcoSleep mattress.
What We Like About the Brooklyn Bedding EcoSleep
- The eco-friendly materials – As Stuart said, “This sustainable sleep solution is designed for those looking for a healthier place to rest their heads”. The EcoSleep mattress features eco-friendly and organic materials, along with multiple certifications.
- Flippable design – This bed is flippable, with a different firmness and feel on each side. Although both sides are in the medium range, the plush side has softer latex, whereas the other side has firmer latex that doesn’t offer as much sinkage.
- There’s a Luxe upgrade – If you like this mattress but feel like it misses a little something, you may want to check the Luxe model. The EcoSleep Luxe also features a plush zippable top that adds more softness and pressure relief.
Our Brooklyn Bedding EcoSleep Complaints
- It’s heavy – Although a flippable design brings you two mattresses in one, flipping it may not be easy for everyone. This hybrid weighs 75 to 111 pounds, depending on the size you choose.
- Not the best motion isolation – We found that the EcoSleep mattress does okay in this category, but this may not be enough for light sleepers sharing their mattress with a “husband, a kid, or a husband who acts like a kid,” as Stuart explained.
Too firm for petite sleepers – If you’re under 130 pounds and a side sleeper, this Brooklyn Bedding hybrid may be a bit too firm for you.
Testing the Brooklyn Bedding EcoSleep Mattress: How it Performed
When we test mattresses we are looking to see how they perform in different sleep positions. Does the tester feel comfortable? Are they supported enough? Our testers also asses multiple preference-based features like edge support, cooling, motion isolation, and bounce.
For more on our testing methodology, visit our product review process page.
Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types
According to Brooklyn Bedding, the EcoSleep mattress can support up to 950 pounds. However, we can’t guarantee that it would feel good if you’re over 300 pounds. The brand also sells their Brooklyn Bedding Titan Plus, which can be great for heavier sleepers who need a bed that better accommodates their needs.
Weight | Side Sleepers | Back Sleepers | Stomach Sleepers |
Lightweight Sleepers (-130 lbs) | ★☆☆ | ★★★ | ★★★ |
Average-Weight Sleepers (130-230 lbs) | ★★★ | ★★★ | ★★☆ |
Heavyweight Sleepers (+230 lbs) | ★★☆ | ★★☆ | ★☆☆ |
Side Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight side sleepers usually prefer softer beds, so we think they’re better off with a softer bed. As Stuart said, “smaller or lighter individuals may feel some pressure on their boning points.”
- Average-Weight Sleepers – Stuart is an average-weight sleeper, and he found the Medium side comfortable as it offers a balance of pressure relief and support. Those closer to 230 pounds can test the firmer side of the bed to see how it feels for side sleeping.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavy sleepers should like the firmer side as it does a better job of supporting added weight. In this case, the coils are closer to the top, offering better spine alignment.
Back Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – “The softer side offers a little more contouring thanks to the softer latex layer,” according to Stuart. This means lightweight back sleepers should feel a nice balance of pressure relief and support in this position.
- Average-Weight Sleepers – Stuart liked both sides of this bed for back sleeping because he’s 150 pounds, so he’s a true average-weight sleeper. Those closer to 230 pounds may want to stick to the Firm side.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – We think this bed would be a good match for heavier back sleepers, but those significantly over 230 pounds and closer to 300 pounds may want to look at the brand’s Titan Plus model.
Stomach Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight stomach sleepers can enjoy both sides of this bed, depending on how much pressure relief they need. The bed’s firm feel does a good job of ensuring the hips are aligned and the spine is neutral even in this position.
- Average-Weight Sleepers – “The firmer side is great for stomach sleepers, helping spinal alignment but allowing just enough softness for the other parts of the body to be comforted,” Stuart noted.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavier sleepers might want to look for another model as this hybrid is likely not firm enough to keep the hips from sinking too deeply for stomach sleepers well over 230 pounds.
Pressure Relief
3/5
This mattress is medium to medium-firm, so it may not offer high levels of pressure relief for everyone. Side sleepers who are very petite may find that the firmness of this mattress doesn’t offer enough pressure relief for the hips and shoulders.
Generally speaking, the softer side of this bed should offer more contouring and sinkage, and with that, more pressure relief. However, it really depends on how much you weigh. Heavier people will sink more and achieve more pressure relief, whereas lightweight people may want an even softer model.
Is the Brooklyn Bedding EcoSleep Mattress Good for Pain Relief?
Hybrid mattresses are often good for pain relief as they offer enough support to keep the body aligned. This Brooklyn Bedding model has an innerspring layer of up to 961 individually encased Ascension® coils that offer deep compression support. The Firm side has a 1.5-inch layer of firmer latex that enhances support and reduces sinkage towards the top of the bed.
Back Pain
Most back sleepers should be comfortable on either side since they are both in the medium-firm range. The medium side may offer just slightly more contouring from the softer latex layer, conforming to the natural spinal curve spine while promoting spinal alignment. This should help relieve back pain in all sleeping positions, preventing it from resurfacing during sleep.
Hip Pain
Hip pain can make it difficult to get a good night’s sleep, especially if you’re a side sleeper. The EcoSleep mattress is a good option for heavier people with hip pain as they’re likely to sink a bit and experience more pressure relief. Petite and lightweight sleepers should either opt for a complimentary topper or go for a softer bed to prevent hip pain when sleeping on the side.
Shoulder Pain
We think that people with shoulder pain would enjoy the EcoSleep mattress. However, those under 130 pounds who sleep on their side may want a softer bed for extra sinkage and cushioning. Back sleepers with shoulder pain should experience a nice level of support with minimal sinkage thanks to the dense latex layers and sturdy Ascension® coils.
Support
5/5
This mattress excels in support as it has 6-inch coils and an overall firmer feel on both sides. Many stomach sleepers prefer a firmer bed that keeps the hips even with the rest of the body, preventing arching of the spine and subsequent back pain.
The Firm side is better for stomach sleepers, promoting spinal alignment with just enough softness to allow other parts of the body to feel comfortable. Side and back sleepers should also feel well-supported on this bed.
Motion Transfer
3/5
If a bed has too much motion transfer, this can be disruptive for co-sleepers because one sleeper’s tossing and turning can mean movement is felt on the other side of the bed, potentially waking up the other person. For this reason, it’s helpful to look for beds that keep motion isolated from where it originates.
Latex is a bouncier and responsive type of foam, so it doesn’t usually isolate motion as well as traditional memory foam would. Anyone sharing the bed with pets, children, or an active partner may feel some of the movement from their bedmates.
Temperature Regulation / Cooling
3/5
This bed doesn’t have any specific cooling features, but it does have naturally breathable and temperature-regulating materials.
The cover, which is made from Joma™ wool and cotton, is exceptionally breathable, so you’re unlikely to feel heat build up around your body. On top of that, there’s latex, which is naturally breathable and generally more cooling than traditional memory foam. The coils also help with breathability, allowing air to circulate throughout the construction.
Bounce
4/5
“Both sides are really responsive, so you shouldn’t feel stuck when you try to change positions,” said Stuart. If you watch his video review, you can see how bouncy the materials are when he presses into the mattress.
When you lie on the bed, you’re unlikely to feel the same bounce and response as you would when jumping on it. However, it’s important to note that the entire construction is quite responsive as it has both coils and latex, two buoyant materials.
Edge Support
4/5
Edge support is important if you like to sit on the side of the bed or want to use the entire surface (like if you have three kids and a dog in bed with you most nights). Both sides of this mattress are firm enough that you should be able to comfortably spread out without worrying about rolling off the edges. There is more compression with sitting on the side of the bed since your full weight is concentrated in one spot.
Performance for Couples
3/5
We think the EcoSleep mattress would be a nice match for most couples as it has qualities that many couples could want in a bed.
It has two firmness options, both of which are highly versatile, so partners can decide which feel works for both of them. On top of that, it has decent cooling and breathability, paired with just enough bounce for sexually active partners. Although some couples may prefer more motion isolation, this often comes at a cost of bounce, so we suggest you think about which of the two is more important to you and your partner.

This eco-friendly mattress has sustainably sourced Joma™ wool as well as organic cotton. The latex in the EcoSleep is also sustainably sourced, making it an excellent mattress for eco-conscious shoppers.
Bed-in-a-Box Shipping
Brooklyn Bedding ships their mattresses in a box, making them easier to move from the doorstep to the bedroom. This is particularly helpful since the EcoSleep can be heavy, especially if you go for some of the larger sizes.
Adjustable Base Compatible
The EcoSleep mattress fits a range of bed foundations, including an adjustable base for those who want to elevate their sleeping experience.
Made in the USA
Construction: What’s Inside the EcoSleep?
Each side of the EcoSleep is covered with a premium eco-friendly cover made of Joma wool™ and cotton. Joma wool™ has the unique ability to repel water liquid while absorbing water vapor, making it ideal for moisture-wicking while also delivering a 40-50-percent increase in volume without adding weight. Natural cotton is inherently soft, breathable, and hypoallergenic.
Overall, there are four layers that stand 11.75 inches tall together with the cover. We’ll cover the mattress construction with the Medium side up.
- The first layer under the cover consists of 1.5 inches of plush 100 percent natural latex foam that offers a highly responsive sleep surface with a high degree of bounce. This comfort layer should adjust to your body each time you move without the sinking feeling of memory foam.
- The second layer features a 1.5-inch total latex support layer, designed to promote proper spinal alignment while relieving pressure. Latex is known for its durability and resilience, so this foam should retain its shape for many years.
- The third layer offers a 6-inch base featuring 952 individually-encased Ascension™ coils. These recyclable coils are designed to deliver deep compression support and to help minimize motion transfer.
- The fourth layer also functions as the top of the Firm side. This layer is constructed with a single 1.5-inch layer of firmer latex.
Unboxing & Off-Gassing
The EcoSleep is a bed-in-a-box model so it arrives at your doorstep wrapped in plastic and rolled into a box. We noticed a slight odor, though this is common for bed-in-a-box mattresses. This smell should dissipate within a few hours, but make sure to leave the windows open to help the mattress air out.

Our Verdict
The EcoSleep is part of the Brooklyn Bedding family of products and is one of their newest luxury bed-in-a-box lines. They’ve natural and organic materials with the flexibility of two unique sleep surfaces, offering comfort and support to a wide range of sleepers.
This hybrid model features natural latex and individual coils to provide comfort, support, and pressure relief. The combination of high-quality materials with the durable construction sets this bed apart and should offer sleepers a great return on their investment for years to come. Although we wouldn’t recommend it to light sleepers and those who need maximum motion isolation, its dual firmness makes it a good fit for a range of sleepers. Overall, this bed earned a score of 3.6 out of 5.
