Our Honest Layla Mattress Review for 2024

Last Updated on January 3, 2024

Written by Jill Zwarensteyn

Copper may not be the first thing you imagine when you dream of a comfortable new bed, but we think it’s a “cool” addition to mattress technology. Layla’s dual-sided, copper-infused memory bed, in particular, promotes temperature regulation while supplying fantastic pressure relief.

That’s not all the Layla Mattress has to offer, though. Our Layla mattress review showcases the brand’s flagship model. In this article, we’ll cover all the features and specifications that make this mattress stand out so you can decide if this is the right bed for you.

Who We Recommend The Layla For:

  • Active folks – Soft side up, the Layla excels in relieving pressure along all of your body’s heaviest points with its deep cradling layer of memory foam. Firmer supportive layers underneath help ensure that your spine remains in neutral alignment.

  • Sweaty sleepers – The cover is infused with the company’s proprietary cooling ThermoGel®, and the first layer of memory foam incorporates copper, a “thermal superhighway.” Both materials work together to noticeably reduce heat retention, which is often associated with traditional memory foam.

  • Hesitant shoppers – By sleeping on a bed that contains two firmness levels (one soft and one firm), you can discover the type of support and pressure relief that suits your body best. In addition, the brand provides a generous risk-free 120-night trial period.

Who We Don’t Recommend The Layla For:

  • People looking for bounce – This bed delivers all the advantages that make memory products great, including pressure relief and contouring, and has added features to reduce heat retention. However, those who prefer to sleep on the top of their mattress as well as sexually-active couples may not appreciate the deep hug of the Layla mattress, especially when turned to its Soft side.

  • Sleepers looking for medium firmness – Layla offers plenty of customization and versatility by including two sides (Soft and Firm), but the bed does not have a medium option to accommodate those who want a more balanced feel, such as couples.

First Impressions: Firmness & Feel

Firmness Scale: 5-6/10 (Firm) 4-5/10 (Soft)

Please remember that firmness is a subjective characteristic and your shape will dictate how you experience a bed. A heavier person whose weight can more easily push through softer comfort and support layers may experience a bed as softer than a lightweight person. The way you are shaped could also play a role here. Consider your weight, shape, and size when evaluating firmness scores.

This Layla mattress is flippable and has a different firmness level on each side. This means you’re essentially getting two mattresses in one since one side is soft and the other is firm. We rate all mattresses on a scale from one to ten, which should help you decide whether or not the Layla Mattress fits your needs.

The soft side of this Layla mattress is rated a 4-5 out of 10 on our firmness scale, while the firm side is rated a 5-6 out of 10. You can expect a deep hugging sensation with the soft side, while the firm side offers a more supportive feel with gentle contouring.

How Does It Feel?

After you unwrap the Layla and roll it out, the mattress inflates as the memory foam expands to its intended shape and size.

The soft cover has hexagon stitching, with one side darker than the other so that you can quickly tell which side is firm and which is soft. As you lie down on the soft side, you should feel the foams give you a deeper cradle. Conversely, the firm side should leave you feeling more “on” the bed rather than “in” it.

What We Like About the Layla

  • The flippable design – The Layla mattress has two sides which allows you to choose between a firm and soft feel, depending on your needs and preferences. This dual-sided design makes it a versatile option for many different kinds of sleepers.

  • Cooling copper – Tiny copper particles are located in the Layla’s gel-infused foam , which helps cool the mattress (a bonus for hot sleepers). This design helps the mattress carry your body heat away from the surface to keep it cool throughout the night.

  • Luxury feel – This high-quality mattress is made with premium materials and includes luxurious stitching which adds even more to how it looks and feels.

Our Layla Complaints

  • Not for heavy people – Although this Layla bed has a firm side, it’s likely not firm enough to carry those who weigh above 230 pounds, especially if they prefer sleeping on their stomach.

  • No bounce – The Layla doesn’t have enough bounce that some couples and people with mobility issues may want in a mattress. This bed’s all-foam construction is great for motion isolation, but not so great for responding to movement quickly.

  • It’s heavy – This bed weighs anywhere between 40 and 90 pounds, depending on the size you choose. Without someone’s help, the weight can make it difficult to flip.

Testing the Layla Mattress: How it Performed

We tested both sides of the Layla mattress to get a better understanding of how each side performs. We tested the bed for sinkage, pressure relief, support, motion isolation, bounce, and other preference-based features. In addition, we also measured its cooling abilities to see just how cool the copper gel is. This way, we were able to tell what type of sleepers the mattress works best for.

Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types

The Layla Mattress is constructed to hold up to 900 pounds. That being said, the company suggests that individuals who weigh 200 pounds or more should check out the hybrid version of this bed, which provides support through an individually-wrapped coil system.

Heavier sleepers typically need more substantial support to prevent them from sinking in too deeply, which throws off the spine’s alignment, possibly leading to pain and discomfort. Although the Firm side of the Layla memory foam could work for some, if you carry significantly more weight, you may prefer the hybrid version of this bed or another brand that designs a mattress specifically for larger frames. Lightweight sleepers under 130 pounds should be a good fit for the soft side of this bed, but some who only sleep on their stomach could enjoy the feel of the firm, more supportive side.

Side Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Side sleepers who weigh under 130 pounds should like the soft side of the Layla mattress. This side provides a deeper hug, which helps with pressure relief in the shoulders, hips, and knees.
  • Average-weight Sleepers – Average-weight side sleepers can try both soft and firm sides of the Layla mattress. We think either side can work for these sleepers, depending on your exact weight. Although, those who weigh closer to 230 pounds may want to stick to the firm side.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – The Layla mattress is likely to feel too soft for heavyweight side sleepers, regardless of the side you use. Even the firm side may allow too much sinkage to keep the spine aligned for those who weigh over 230 pounds.

Back Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Back sleepers who weigh under 130 pounds can probably use both sides of the Layla mattress, depending on what type of feel they prefer. Most should prefer the softer side as it allows a good balance of pressure relief and support.
  • Average-Weight Sleepers – Back sleepers who weigh 130 to 230 pounds can also use both sides. Those closer to 230 pounds need more support, so they may prefer the firm side as it has a sturdier feel.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavyweight back sleepers who like a bit of sinkage should try the firm side of the Layla mattress. However, those over 250 pounds should probably try the hybrid version for extra support.

Stomach Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – We recommend that lightweight stomach sleepers try the firm side of this bed. The copper gel memory foam layer should provide enough support to prevent the hips from sinking too far into the mattress.
  • Average-weight Sleepers – Average-weight stomach sleepers can also fare well with the firm side, but this depends on their exact weight. Those closer to 230 pounds may sink too much, so they may want to try the hybrid.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Stomach sleepers need firm support to prevent their hips from sinking into the mattress. The Layla is likely too soft to provide sufficient support for stomach sleepers weighing over 230 pounds.

Pressure Relief & Pain

The pressure relief of this product truly excels; memory foam is specially made to cradle your body in a deep and cozy hug. However, if pressure relief tops your list of needs, you may prefer the soft side of the Layla bed that gives some extra TLC for problematic joints and muscles.

The Layla mattress isn’t as slow to respond as other memory materials, though, which allows for smoother repositioning. The material does not snap immediately back into place, which provides a gentle contour, especially in the lumbar area.

Back Pain – Back pain can be a serious issue regardless of your preferred sleeping position, so it’s good that the Layla has two sides to accommodate different sleepers. The mattress allows you to choose between a gentle cradle and a deep hug, which should help relieve back pain even for those sleeping on their back.

Hip Pain – People with hip pain should avoid sleeping on their side. However, those who can’t sleep any other way should opt for the softer side as it provides more sinkage and relief in the hip area.

Shoulder Pain – Those with shoulder pain usually sleep on their back because side and stomach sleeping places too much pressure on the shoulders. The Layla should relieve some of the pain by hugging the curves and preventing pressure build-up.

Support

The Layla mattress offers a classic memory-bed feel that cradles the body’s curves while providing good support on both sides. Like many beds in the memory foam space, there is next to no bounce. Either side of the Layla mattress should accommodate various sleep positions. However, if you are an active (combination) sleeper and the ease of repositioning is exceptionally important to you, you may want to try the firm side for additional comfort.

Heavier folks should get better support from the firm side, while those on the lighter end should prefer the soft side.

Motion Transfer

The Layla mattress is made entirely out of foam, which gives it excellent motion-isolating abilities. Memory foam does a great job of isolating motion so that movement on one side does not transfer to the other side. This makes the mattress a good choice for couples, especially if partners have different sleeping schedules and habits. One person tossing and turning is unlikely to disturb the other person since the foam absorbs motion across the entire surface. Both the soft and firm sides of the Layla mattress do a good job of this.

Temperature Regulation / Cooling

Hot sleepers know the struggle of trying to find a cool spot on the mattress. Although this Layla bed has a cooling cover on both sides, the surface isn’t particularly cool to the touch. However, copper gel memory foam helps with cooling by drawing your body heat away from the surface. In addition, Layla has a support layer with deep channeling (also known as divots in the foam that promote airflow) which provides even more cooling to prevent the rest of the construction from overheating.

Performance for Couples

Couples usually look for excellent motion isolation, edge support, and a bit of bounce. This Layla mattress excels in motion isolation as it’s made from foam that does a good job of absorbing movement. However, it doesn’t have much bounce, which can be an issue for sexually-active couples. Although the edges don’t collapse, they do sink a bit, which is something to keep in mind for couples who like to spread out.

Preference-based Features

Dual-Side Firmness

With Layla memory foam mattresses, you get two firmness options in one product. Flip it to whichever side best suits your sleeping preferences.

Bed-in-a-Box

Don’t want to go into a mattress retailer, talk to a salesperson, and schedule a delivery? Layla has you covered. This bed is vacuum-sealed and shipped in a box so that you can get it at your convenience.

Great Motion Isolation

Like most memory foam beds, the Layla mattress performs well for motion isolation. Jumping or simply getting in and out of bed produces a minimal transfer of movement from one part to the other. Motion isolation is helpful for couples who sleep light and have different sleeping schedules. You should sleep undisturbed by your partner moving around in this bed.

Adjustable Base Compatible

This mattress fits a range of bed foundations, including an adjustable base that allows you to customize the feel and performance.

Handcrafted in the USA

Construction: What’s Inside Layla?

The fully removable cover has a top that is a polyester/viscose/lycra blend infused with cooling ThermoGel®, which is activated when it comes into contact with moisture.

For this review, we will take you through the layers as they are stacked when the soft side is up.

  • At the top is three inches of copper-infused memory foam for contouring and comfort. Copper, both antimicrobial and a highly efficient heat conductor, helps keep the mattress cool and germ-free. In addition, the copper cells in the foam firm up under pressure so that heavy parts of the body receive both pressure relief and additional support from this unique material.
  • The next layer is two inches of convoluted Air Flow support foam, which resembles what we recognize as an egg crate shape. This layer promotes airflow that helps the mattress’s temperature remain regulated while providing additional pressure relief and support.
  • Going deeper, you’ll find a 4-inch thick foam layer that is Layla’s primary source of support for sleepers. This layer ensures minimal motion transfer and maximum longevity.
  • The base is a 1-inch layer of the same copper-infused foam used in the first layer that provides contouring and comfort when the mattress is flipped over. The foam on this end is thinner to complement the firmer feel. The addition of copper provides the same faster cooling and antimicrobial odor control.

Unboxing & Off-Gassing

The Layla mattress comes compressed in a box, so it’s easy to carry from your doorstep to the bedroom. However, the box can be heavy, so having a helping hand is recommended. Once it arrives, bring it to your bed foundation of choice and remove the packaging. The mattress should take a few hours to decompress, although we suggest giving it a few days before sleeping on it. This way, you can be sure that the bed reaches its full size.

You may also notice off-gassing smells that are common with all-foam mattresses shipped in a box. The smell can last anywhere between a few hours and a few days. In most cases, the smell should go away by the time the mattress decompresses.

Certifications

  • Eco-Friendly Certifications – The foams in this bed are CertiPUR-US® certified. CertiPUR-US® is a third-party program that ensures the foams meet rigorous health and safety standards. This means they don’t contain harmful substances like ozone depleters, PBDEs, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and phthalates. They should also have low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.

Coupons, Trials, Warranties, and Shipping

  • Shipping – This mattress ships for free within the continental USA and is available for Alaska, Hawaii, and Canada for an additional fee.
  • Trial – The company gives you 120 nights to decide if this mattress is right for you.
  • Warranty – Layla offers an industry-leading lifetime warranty that lasts for as long as you own the mattress.
  • Return Policy – Returns are free, but you have to keep the mattress for at least four weeks before initiating a return. If you ordered from Alaska, Hawaii, or Canada, it’s important to know that shipping fees are non-refundable.

Overall Summary

Overall, Layla’s dual-sided design helps it appeal to a range of body types and sleep preferences. Its unique copper-infused memory foam should keep you cool and comfortable while you sleep.

Side Sleepers

5/5

The Layla earned top marks for this category, as side sleepers should feel exceptionally comfortable on the soft side, which delivers pressure relief to the hips and shoulders. Side sleepers tend to experience additional pressure because their body weight is concentrated on a smaller surface area, so the Layla should be an excellent match for this type of sleeper.

Back Sleepers

5/5

This mattress earned a 5/5 here because most back sleepers should feel comfortable on the bed’s firm side, which helps keep the body lifted for optimal spinal alignment while continuing to provide pressure relief to areas like the legs and shoulders.

Stomach Sleepers

4/5

The Layla also received high marks for stomach sleepers since the firm side should help prevent their hips from sinking too deeply, which is essential for proper spine alignment. Significantly heavier stomach sleepers, however, may enjoy a firmer hybrid option with more robust support.

Combination Sleepers

4/5

The Layla mattress scored a four for combo sleepers because memory foam can make it tough to reposition throughout the night. However, the firm side should better support sleepers who toss and turn, as long as they don’t spend too much time on their side.

Couples

4/5

The Layla scored a four because the foam slightly compresses when lying on the edge, though some couples with a bigger bed may not be bothered by that. Nevertheless, this mattress earned high marks for couples thanks to its ability to reduce motion transfer significantly, allowing you to move around without waking your partner.

Heavy Sleepers

3/5

The Layla isn’t the best option for heavier sleepers, which is why we scored this bed at a 3 in this category. Those with heavier weight considerations are likely limited to the Firm side, and if they’re over 200 pounds, the company suggests their Hybrid model instead for better support.

Lightweight Sleepers

5/5

Layla’s soft side is ideal for those who are significantly lightweight, which is why we gave this mattress a 5 here. The foams should still compress as intended, giving you the support and pressure relief your body needs. Lightweight stomach sleepers also have the option to use the firm side if they need more solid support in the hips.

Average Weight Sleepers

5/5

Average-weight sleepers should like both sides of the Layla mattress, depending on their preferred sleeping position. The mattress offers a deep hug on one side and gentle contouring on the other, which should fit a range of people weighing 130 to 200 pounds.

Overall Value

4/5

Overall, this mattress scored a 4/5 for memory bed lovers who want pressure relief with premium cooling features. The Layla’s dual-sided firmness levels make it a great value, plus it’s backed by a Lifetime Warranty.

Our Verdict

The Layla mattress’s exceptional detail to cooling features is why we feel this bed is an ideal investment for folks who are in search of a bed that’ll help prevent them from overheating while they sleep.

We also recommend the Layla for folks who need superb relief for their pressure points. Built with memory foam, aka one of the best materials for pressure relief, the Layla should be an excellent match for these shoppers.

Lastly, we feel this bed is excellent for couples who are light sleepers. This mattress delivers motion isolation so partners can move without disturbing the other person.

Sleep Advisor’s Testing Methodology

At Sleep Advisor, our mattress reviews are based on findings from in-person tests that allow us to have a genuine understanding of how the mattress feels and performs.

We also evaluate mattress performance for back, side, and stomach sleeping. Lying in different positions lets us know how supportive the bed is and if it’s good at relieving pressure.

We then take all the information we’ve gathered to rate the bed in specific categories. These results allow us to help our readers find the right mattress for their needs.
