Tempur-Pedic has been selling memory foam mattresses since 1992 and is the only brand to use the original NASA-developed TEMPUR® foam in its mattresses. Today, we’re checking out the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt®, which is available in a Soft or Firm model, though we’re focusing on the Soft option for this review.

The LuxeAdapt® is the most luxurious model in the brand’s Adapt® Collection, containing 40 percent more pressure relieving TEMPUR® foam than the original Adapt® mattress. Only the LuxeAdapt® contains TEMPUR-APR+™ foam, which gives 30 percent more conforming comfort than the original TEMPUR-APR™ material that’s used in the mid-range ProAdapt®.

Who We Recommend The Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® For:

• People with joint pain – The TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® mattress provides exceptional pressure relief, which could be music to the ears of those who have sensitive and achy joints, thanks to the enveloping hug offered by the plush memory foam.
• Light to average-weight side sleepers – Sleepers in this category should sink nicely into the slow-moving memory foam in this bed, experiencing comfortable cushioning at the shoulders and hips, as well as sufficient spinal support.
• Lightweight back sleepers – We think many lightweight back sleepers under 130 pounds could love this mattress, as it offers good support and body contouring, keeping everything cushioned and aligned well.

Who We Don’t Recommend The Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® For:

• Heavyweight sleepers – Unfortunately, we found this mattress to be far too soft for heavier sleepers over 230 pounds, who will find themselves bottoming out in all positions.
• Stomach sleepers – Front sleepers need a lot of support to keep the hips elevated, but this mattress simply isn’t firm enough to do the job. Instead, we recommend taking a look at our favorite mattresses for stomach sleepers.
• Average to heavyweight back sleepers – With a 5 out of 10 firmness, this mattress is a soft one, and its layers of plush foam make it unsuitable for back sleepers over 130 pounds, who will find their hips disappearing into the bed.

First Impressions: Firmness & Feel

Firmness Scale: 5/10

Please remember that firmness is a subjective characteristic and your shape will dictate how you experience a bed. A heavier person whose weight can more easily push through softer comfort and support layers may experience a bed as softer than a lightweight person. The way you are shaped could also play a role here. Consider your weight, shape, and size when evaluating firmness scores.

Mattress firmness should play a big part in your decision when buying a new bed, and your required firmness level depends on factors like your body weight and sleeping position/s. We rate firmness on a scale from 1 to 10, where 1 is the softest and 10 is the most firm.
The TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® Soft model came in at a 5 out of 10, making it medium-plush. This is likely to be suitable for many lightweight people and some average-weight individuals, but it’s not a good choice for heavyweight sleepers, who will need something firmer for better support.

How does it feel?

The TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® has a cool-to-the-touch cover, thanks to the heat-wicking fibers that are woven into it. Press your hand into the surface and you’ll see just how slow-moving the TEMPUR® memory foam is.

Lying down on the bed, you’ll feel the foam gently contour and hug your curves, offering comfortable plush cushioning. This has more of an ‘in the bed’ feel, which will appeal to memory foam devotees but may not be ideal for those with limited mobility or combination sleepers.

What We Like About the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt®

• Motion isolation – The TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® has amazing motion isolation due to its super slow-moving memory foam. This is great news if you’re a light sleeper who shares their bed with a restless partner or pet.
• Exceptional pressure relief – Tempur-Pedic makes their beds with pressure relief in mind, and the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® certainly lives up to that. The NASA-developed memory foam will hug your body, soothing sensitive joints.
• Free white glove delivery – White glove delivery is often offered as an extra-fee service, but Tempur-Pedic provides it for free with this model. This means your mattress will be set up in your room of choice, and all you’ll have to do is pop the sheets on.

Our Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® Complaints

• Hard to move around on – While deep sinkage is fantastic for pressure relief, it can also make it harder to change sleeping positions during the night, which is something to consider for combination sleepers.
• Edge support – With great sinkage often comes poor edge support, and unfortunately, this is certainly the case for this mattress.
• Limited sizing – The Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® isn’t available in Twin or Full sizes, which may limit some shoppers.

Testing the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® Mattress: How it Performed

We take reviewing mattresses seriously and perform multiple tests to help us give you as much information as possible, so you can make an informed decision. We look at multiple features that are valuable to consumers, including pressure relief, support, cooling, motion isolation, bounce, and comfort in various sleeping positions.

Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types

While the brand states that their mattresses don’t have an official weight limit, we don’t recommend this model for most sleepers weighing over 130 pounds, except for side sleepers weighing 130 to 230 pounds.

Side Sleepers

• Lightweight Sleepers – Lighter side sleepers should enjoy the plush contouring of this soft bed, offering deep sinkage and great pressure relief at the shoulders and hips.
• Average Weight Sleepers – This bed is a fantastic choice for average-weight side sleepers, who will sink deeply into the comfort layers, experiencing great pressure relief.
• Heavyweight Sleepers – We don’t recommend this mattress for heavyweight people, as it’s too soft to provide the required support.

Back Sleepers

• Lightweight Sleepers – Lighter sleepers under 130 pounds tend to find beds feel a little firmer, so many could feel well-supported on this bed. However, some may prefer a firmer bed to give them extra support in the hip area.
• Average Weight Sleepers – This bed isn’t a great choice for average-weight back sleepers, as it’s too soft to keep their hips elevated, which could cause lower back pain.
• Heavyweight Sleepers – Again, this isn’t a good option for heavier sleepers, whose hips will sink too deeply into the foam, creating pressure in the lower back.

Stomach Sleepers

• Lightweight Sleepers – Stomach sleepers require a lot of support to keep the hips elevated, and we don’t think this mattress provides that, even for lightweight people. The Firm version of the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® would be a better option.
• Average Weight Sleepers – With its deep body contouring, this mattress isn’t suitable for average-weight stomach sleepers, who need their hips to remain level for good spinal health.
• Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavyweight stomach sleepers should steer clear of this soft mattress, which won’t provide the necessary support to keep the hips elevated.

Pressure Relief & Pain

As expected, the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® Soft version offers fantastic pressure relief, thanks to its comfort layer of super soft TEMPUR-ES® memory foam, which is the softest TEMPUR® foam around, providing soothing conforming around your unique curves. The sleeper should feel themselves sinking into the foam, feeling cushioned in all the right places. This mattress is especially suitable for light to average-weight side sleepers who experience joint pain.

Back Pain – While this mattress offers great pressure relief, which could suit lightweight sleepers with back pain, we think the lack of support for those above 130 pounds could exacerbate any back issues.
Hip Pain – Light to average-weight side sleepers with hip pain should feel great relief in the sensitive hip area on this plush bed.
Shoulder Pain – The deep hug of this bed provided amazing pressure relief at the shoulders, which is great news for light to average-weight side sleepers. However, heavier individuals will find themselves sinking too deeply, causing discomfort.

Support

While the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt®’s high-density base layer provides good support for some light to average-weight sleepers, it’s not enough to counteract the deep sinkage of the plush foams above it for most sleepers over 130 pounds. However, light to average-weight side sleepers and most lightweight back sleepers should feel sufficiently supported by this Soft model, experiencing the deep hug of memory foam while also keeping their spine in a healthy alignment. This could be great news for those who want the incredible pressure relief of a soft bed without sacrificing spine support.

Motion Transfer

If you share your bed with a partner or pet who moves around a lot, then motion isolation is something you need to consider. A bed with good motion isolation means that any movement from another part of the bed is absorbed before it reaches you, allowing you to sleep undisturbed. The TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® offers fantastic motion isolation, which light sleepers with restless partners will appreciate.

Temperature Regulation / Cooling

All-foam beds like the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® can wind up trapping heat, which can make them uncomfortable for hot sleepers or those residing in warm climates. While this bed does include phase change material in its cool-to-the-touch cover that helps release heat, the deep sinkage doesn’t allow much room for airflow between the body and the foam, which can raise your body temperature. Multiple Firmness Options

We’ve focused on the Soft version of the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® for this review, but it’s also available in a Firm version. The Firm model has a shallower comfort layer and taller support later, with original TEMPUR® memory foam in the comfort layer instead of the extra plush TEMPUR-ES® that features in the Soft version.

Removable Cover

The TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt®’s cooling cover is fully removable, and you can even put it in your washing machine for easy cleaning.

Free White Glove Delivery

If you’ll be home alone when accepting delivery of your new mattress, rest assured that you won’t have to do any heavy lifting, as your new bed will be fully set up for you.

Adjustable Base Compatible

The TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® can be used on your existing adjustable base, although Tempur-Pedic sells their own collection of power bases.

Construction: What’s Inside the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt®?

The Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® is a 13-inch all-foam bed that’s available as a Soft or Firm model, though this review focuses on the Soft model specifically. The mattress starts with a stretchy polyester and phase change material cover that’s designed to feel cool to the touch and help dissipate body heat for a more comfortable night’s sleep. The TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt®’s cover is removable and washable, which isn’t the case with all Tempur-Pedic beds.

• The comfort layer features 3.5 inches of TEMPUR-ES® memory foam, with the ‘ES’ standing for ‘extra soft’. TEMPUR® foam was originally developed by NASA scientists to cushion astronauts on takeoff and is incredibly slow-moving, offering plush contouring and pressure relief. Only Tempur-Pedic beds contain TEMPUR® foam. (The Firm version of this bed features original TEMPUR® foam, which is firmer than TEMPUR-ES® foam.)
• The second layer is a contouring layer, with just over an inch of TEMPUR-APR+™ foam, which stands for ‘advanced pressure relief’. This offers 30 percent more conforming comfort than the original APR™ foam (used in the mid-range ProAdapt® model), thanks to its tighter cell structure.
• A transition layer of poly foam eases the sleeper down into the firmer support layer beneath, designed to prevent too much sinkage.
• The base layer features high-density poly foam to support the sleeper and provide durability for the rest of the bed.

Unboxing & Off-Gassing

The Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® arrives compressed in a box, with free white glove delivery, so you won’t even have to set it up yourself.

As with many bed-in-a-box models, there’ll be an element of off-gassing, which is a harmless yet unpleasant odor that’s the result of chemical byproducts escaping after vacuum packing. Ventilate the room, and the smell should disappear within a few hours. You can sleep on your mattress right away.

Is the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® better than the TEMPUR-ProAdapt®?

This will depend on your individual needs.

The TEMPUR-ProAdapt® is the mid-range model of the Adapt® series, while the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® is the most luxurious model. The ProAdapt® stands at 12 inches tall and offers “advanced” pressure relief, while the LuxeAdapt® is 13 inches tall, offering “ultimate” pressure relief, and is 30 percent more conforming than the ProAdapt®. The ProAdapt® is available in Soft, Medium, or Firm versions of the all-foam design, as well as a Medium Hybrid model. Conversely, the LuxeAdapt® comes as a Soft or Firm all-foam mattress.

Temur-Pedic has been around for decades and is the only company that makes mattresses using NASA-developed TEMPUR® memory foam. Made in the USA with high-quality materials, the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® is a luxury mattress at a luxury price. Though their trial is slightly shorter than many other competitors, they offer an industry-standard 10-year warranty complemented by a reputable name in the mattress market.

Our Verdict

Tempur-Pedic is a big name when it comes to premium memory foam, and is the only bed brand on the market to contain the original NASA-developed TEMPUR® memory foam. The TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® should pique the interest of luxury shoppers seeking a deep hug and exceptional pressure relief.

While the Soft version we reviewed is only suited to lightweight side and back sleepers and average-weight side sleepers, light to average-weight stomach sleepers and average-weight back sleepers with joint pain could be suited to the Firm version. We don’t recommend this bed for heavier people, who will find it far too soft, likely causing back pain and discomfort.
