Nolah Signature All-Foam Hybrid Mattress Review

Last Updated on September 26, 2023

Written by Olivera Jancikin

Side sleepers know the struggle of falling asleep with pressure build-up in the shoulders, knees, and hips. Those who sleep on the side have their weight concentrated across a narrow surface, which can be uncomfortable if your bed isn’t made to accommodate this position.

The Nolah Signature All-Foam Hybrid can help relieve some of that tension as it’s specially made for side sleepers. The carefully selected foams are made to shape around your shoulders, hips, and other joints to ensure cushioning and pressure relief. In this review, we’ll discuss the construction, benefits, and performance to help you decide if the Nolah Signature All-Foam Hybrid is a good choice for you.

Who We Recommend The Nolah Signature All-Foam Hybrid For:

  • Side sleepers – This bed has a mid-range firmness, so it should feel good in most sleeping positions. However, its foam construction makes it among the best options for side sleepers struggling with pressure build-up in the shoulders, hips, and knees.
  • Classic foam fans – Those who like all-foam beds should like how this foam hybrid feels. The construction features five foam layers working together to provide a balance of cushioning, sinkage, pressure relief, and support in different sleeping positions.
  • Couples – The Nolah Signature Foam Hybrid has excellent motion isolation, which is great for couples who don’t want to be disturbed by a restless partner. However, this bed’s edge support isn’t as strong, so if you and your partner like to spread out, you’ll want to go with a larger size.

Who We Don’t Recommend The Nolah Signature All-Foam Hybrid For:

  • People who prefer a classic hybrid – Although it’s called a hybrid, this bed doesn’t actually feature any coils. Instead, it has the AirFoam™ Flex Dynamic Support System in its three bottom layers. The system adapts to your curves and movements, but those who prefer a classic hybrid mattress may want to look elsewhere.
  • Stomach sleepers – Although this Nolah should fit a range of sleepers, some stomach sleepers may find it too soft. Stomach sleepers need maximum support to keep the hips aligned, and those who weigh over 170 pounds may not get this from the Nolah Signature Foam Hybrid.

First Impressions of The Nolah Signature All-Foam Hybrid Mattress: Firmness & Feel

Firmness Scale: 4/10 (Plush Soft), 7/10 (Luxury Firm), 8(Firm)

Text Here

Please remember that firmness is a subjective characteristic and your shape will dictate how you experience a bed. A heavier person whose weight can more easily push through softer comfort and support layers may experience a bed as softer than a lightweight person. The way you are shaped could also play a role here. Consider your weight, shape, and size when evaluating firmness scores.

Mattress Firmness Level 5-6

The Nolah Signature All-Foam Hybrid is rated 5 on our firmness scale, with 10 being the firmest and 1 being the softest. This places it slightly over the middle and on the firmer side of the scale. The medium firmness should feel good to most back and side sleepers, especially those who are lighter in weight.

The bed has a plush 2-inch AirFoam™ layer that allows contouring, but every following layer is firmer and offers more pushback support. The 3-layer Dynamic Support System is the firmest to support your body in a healthy alignment.

How Does The Nolah Signature All-Foam Hybrid Feel?

The top layer of the Nolah Signature All-Foam Hybrid allows a bit of sinkage to contour your curves for great pressure relief, which should help if you struggle with discomfort. Back sleepers on this bed may feel their hips sinking a bit, but this shouldn’t throw the spine out of alignment. Instead, the lower layers of the support system should keep everything straight, although how this bed feels will also on your weight.

Pros: What We Like About The Nolah Signature All-Foam Hybrid Mattress

  • Unique support system – The Nolah Signature All-Foam Hybrid has a unique 3-layer support system called the AirFoam™ Flex Dynamic Support System. The system has two layers with micro-cut waves and a high-density AirFoam™ HD layer between these two.
  • Versatile firmness – This foam mattress is 5 on our firmness scale, so it’s right in the middle of the scale. This means it has medium firmness, which should fit side and back sleepers, couples, lightweight people, and average-weight sleepers.
  • Cooling properties – The Nolah Signature All-Foam Hybrid has a cooling cover made from organic cotton. The cover is crisp and moisture-wicking to help cool down the bed. In addition, it has cooling AirFoam™ in the first layer. While it’s not the coolest bed, it shouldn’t necessarily sleep hot either, which is good for an all-foam option.

Cons: What We Don’t Like About The Nolah Signature All-Foam Hybrid Mattress

  • Not a classic hybrid – Although this is one of the most standout hybrid designs, it’s not a classic hybrid with coils. The bed offers strong support but may lack the bounce and quick response you get from coils.
  • Not for stomach sleepers – Stomach sleepers need a firm mattress that doesn’t allow the hips to sink into the first few layers. The hip area is the heaviest one for most people sleeping on their stomachs, which is why they need firm support. This Nolah Signature may be too soft even though it’s more on the firm side.

Testing the How Does The Nolah Signature All-Foam Hybrid Mattress: How it Performed

We tested the Nolah Signature All-Foam Hybrid to have a better idea of how it performs in different sleeping positions and for people with different body weights. We also tested for motion isolation, edge support, bounce, cooling, pressure relief, and support, all of which are important when buying a new mattress. This Nolah Signature showed good performance in most of these tests, so it should be a good fit for many people, including couples.

Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types

According to Nolah, the Signature All-Foam Hybrid can handle different weights depending on the bed size you choose. The smaller sizes, such as Twin, Twin XL, and Full, can handle up to 300 pounds, whereas the Queen, King, and California King can handle up to 600 pounds. If you’re sharing the bed, keep in mind that each side can accommodate up to 300 pounds for these larger sizes.

Lightweight Sleepers (-130 lbs)★★☆★★★★★☆
Average-Weight Sleepers (130-230 lbs)★★★★★★☆☆☆
Heavyweight Sleepers (+230 lbs)☆☆☆★☆☆☆☆☆

Side Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight side sleepers should like the plush AirFoam™ layer offering a bit of sinkage. However, significantly lighter people may prefer an even softer mattress.
  • Average Weight Sleepers – Average-weight side sleepers should sink just enough without throwing the spine out of alignment. They’ll feel the foam contouring the pressure points while the support system ensures a healthy sleeping posture.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – The Nolah Signature All-Foam Hybrid is likely too soft for heavy sleepers, especially those sleeping on their side since most of their weight is concentrated across a narrow surface.

Back Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Back sleepers weighing less than 130 pounds should like Nolah’s balance of pressure relief and support, especially if they prefer sleeping “on” the mattress instead of “in” it.
  • Average Weight Sleepers – Sleepers weighing closer to 200 pounds may sink a bit more, but this should only provide better pressure relief. However, you’re unlikely to sink too deeply due to the bed’s firmness and support unit.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavyweight sleepers may find their hips sinking too deeply, which can result in waking up with back pain. Some heavyweight back sleepers who prefer a softer bed may like how it feels, but most are likely to find this bed too soft.

Stomach Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – People weighing under 130 pounds may find sufficient support in the Nolah Signature All-Foam Hybrid mattress, but this depends on how they prefer their bed to feel.
  • Average Weight Sleepers – Average-weight stomach sleepers, especially those weighing closer to 200 pounds, are likely to find this bed too soft to keep the hips aligned.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavy sleepers are unlikely to find sufficient support in Nolah’s all-foam construction and mid-range firmness. The bed feels too soft and may even make it difficult to reposition.

Pressure Relief

The Nolah Signature All-Foam Hybrid is good for people with pressure buildup, as it has a plush layer of AirFoam™ that allows a bit of cradling and just enough sinkage. The foam contours sensitive points like your shoulders, hips, and knees, which should help with pressure relief.

When it comes to pain relief, the mattress combines plush upper layers with firmer bottom ones to keep the body in a healthy posture, which should help relieve pain in the back, neck, and hips.

Is The Nolah Signature All-Foam Hybrid Mattress Good for Pain Relief?

Back Pain – Back pain is typically an issue for back sleepers, although stomach and side sleepers may also struggle with this. The Nolah Signature All-Foam Hybrid does a good job of alleviating the pain in this area by providing solid lumbar support along with gentle cradling.
Hip Pain – Hip pain is common among side sleepers, which is why these people usually steer towards softer beds. While this foam hybrid does offer some cradling to relieve pressure in the hips, people with severe pain may want a softer mattress.
Shoulder Pain – Shoulder pain is also a problem side sleepers usually struggle with. Those weighing around 150 pounds should find sufficient relief in the Signature All-Foam Hybrid, but the rest may prefer a mattress with a softer surface.

Support

The Nolah Signature All-Foam Hybrid has a strong support unit, although it’s not a classic hybrid mattress with coils. The AirFoam™ Flex Dynamic Support System is what sets this mattress apart from other foam beds, as it’s made from three layers of high-density foam.

The system is designed to perform like coils, offering similar levels of responsiveness and flexibility. The first and third layers have micro-cut waves that help the mattress adapt to your body and movement. The second layer in this system is a high-density AirFoam™ HD that acts as the main support layer because it’s the firmest and most durable.

Motion Transfer

This Nolah bed is made entirely out of foam, which makes it a good option if you’re after a mattress with excellent motion-isolating properties. The foam in this mattress absorbs movement well enough, allowing you and your partner a peaceful sleeping experience even if one of you is a restless sleeper or likes changing positions throughout the night.

Temperature Regulation / Cooling

This Nolah mattress has a cooling cover made from cotton. Cotton is naturally breathable and moisture-wicking. In addition, the 2-inch layer of AirFoam™ enhances the cooling and breathability to prevent the rest of the mattress from overheating. This won’t be as cool as a traditional hybrid with coils, though, so if you’re an extra-hot sleeper, you might not like this Nolah bed.

Performance for Couples

Couples should appreciate Nolah’s versatile firmness that works for most people, including combination sleepers. The bed also has strong motion isolation that makes it a viable fit for partners with different sleeping schedules.

Another advantage for couples is that the Nolah has good edge support. Although it may collapse a bit if you sit on the sides, you’re unlikely to feel like you’d be rolling off if you sleep in this area. This allows couples to use the entire surface of the bed if they want to spread out.

Preference-based Features

Cooling Capabilities

The Nolah Signature All-Foam Hybrid has an organic cotton cover that adds to its cooling and breathability. Cotton does an excellent job of keeping the bed’s surface cool while also wicking away moisture. The bed also contains AirFoam™, which is more breathable than memory foam and allows this bed to remain cool instead of overheating.

Unique Support System

This hybrid is unique because it doesn’t have coils but a 3-layer support system made up of AirFoam™. The first AirFoam™ layer in this system has micro-cut waves. Next comes high-density AirFoam™ that acts as the main support layer, followed by another layer of AirFoam™ with micro-cut waves. This combination allows superb support, especially in the lumbar area, where most people are the heaviest.

Adjustable Base Compatible

This Nolah mattress works with adjustable bases, making it easy to adjust and customize the feel.

Construction: What’s Inside The Nolah Signature All-Foam Hybrid Mattress

The Nolah Signature Foam Hybrid is 12 inches tall, featuring five layers and three of which are a part of the bed’s support system. The organic cotton cover enhances breathability, cooling, and moisture-wicking, making the mattress a good option for those who sleep hot.

  • The first comfort layer is made of two inches of AirFoam™ that contours to your body. The foam cushions your curves and sensitive points without trapping you inside.
  • Second comfort layer is also two inches, but this one is made from a more responsive foam. This durable layer enhances support while allowing airflow so that the foam construction doesn’t overheat.
  • The AirFoam™ Flex Dynamic Support System starts with a foam layer with micro-cut waves. This helps mimic the coils in a traditional hybrid.
  • Next is high-density AirFoam™ HD foam, acting as the bed’s main support unit that holds your body in alignment while ensuring the rest of the layers don’t sink in.
  • The bottom is another layer of foam with micro-cut waves added to enhance the bed’s durability and support.

The three layers of the AirFoam™ Flex Dynamic Support System work together to follow your changes in movement, adapting to your body in different positions. In addition, this system helps keep your body aligned, ensuring a healthy sleeping posture as you move throughout the night.

Construction of Nolah Signature All Foam Hybrid

Unboxing & Off-Gassing

The Nolah Signature All-Foam Hybrid comes in a box, so it’s easy to carry from your front door to the bedroom. However, we suggest two people do this as the box can be heavy. Nolah also offers white glove delivery, which is a professional service that can remove your old mattress and set up the new one.

Place the box on your foundation of choice and remove the packaging so that the mattress can unroll. This shouldn’t last too long, so you’ll know your mattress is ready once all the wrinkles from the cover are gone. Any off-gassing should also dissipate within 24 hours, but if you notice it still lingers, allow the bed to vent for a little longer.

Certifications

  • Eco-Friendly Certifications – The foams in this bed are CertiPUR-US® certified. CertiPUR-US® is a third-party program that ensures the foams meet rigorous health and safety standards. This means they don’t contain harmful substances like ozone depleters, PBDEs, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and phthalates. They should also have low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.

Overall Summary

Nolah is known for high-quality mattresses, and this all-foam hybrid stands high among its other excellent foam models. The Signature All-Foam Hybrid has everything from comfort and cooling to pressure relief and versatile firmness.

Side Sleeping Icon

Side Sleepers

5/5

Side sleepers should like how this mattress allows a bit of sinkage to relieve the pressure in sensitive areas like the shoulders, hips, and knees. However, heavier side sleepers may need a firmer mattress that does a better job of supporting the hips.

Back Sleeping Icon

Back Sleepers

4/5

This bed is a good option for lightweight and average-weight back sleepers who need a balance of support and pressure relief. The bed has a good support system made up of three foam layers that should do a good job of preventing the hips from sinking in.

Stomach Sleeping Icon

Stomach Sleepers

3/5

Stomach sleepers may find this foam mattress too soft. Those weighing under 130 pounds might find sufficient support, but most are likely to feel their hips sinking in too deeply into the top layer. Although the support layers are dense and durable, the firmness may not be fitting for those who like sleeping on their stomach.

Combination Sleeping Icon

Combination Sleepers

4/5

Combination sleepers should like the Nolah Signature All-Foam Hybrid as it has versatile firmness that should feel good in most positions. Plus, the bed has a bit of bounce to allow easy repositioning, which is crucial for combination sleepers as long as they don’t stay sleeping on their stomach for too long.

Couples Icon

Couples

4/5

Couples looking for motion isolation and edge support should feel good sleeping on the Nolah Signature All-Foam Hybrid. The mattress has versatile firmness and good motion isolation, so partners with different sleeping schedules don’t disturb one another. In addition, you can use the entire surface of the bed without feeling like you’ll roll off.

Heavy Sleepers Icon

Heavy Sleepers

3/5

Significantly heavier people may find this bed too soft. Those who prefer sleeping on their side and stomach might sink in too deeply, which can throw the spine out of alignment. Heavy back sleepers weighing closer to 200 pounds may find some support, but this really depends on how they like their mattress to feel.

Light Weight Sleepers

Lightweight Sleepers

4/5

Lightweight people should get just enough support and pressure relief in most sleeping positions. Those sleeping on their side may like a firmer bed, but again, this depends on personal preference. Most lightweight people will get sufficient sinkage to relieve the pressure in sensitive areas.

Light Weight Sleepers

Average-Weight Sleepers

4/5

Those weighing 130 to 230 pounds should like this mattress as it has mid-range firmness that fits many people. The first layers allow gentle contouring while the support system keeps the body aligned so that it doesn’t sink in. Stomach sleepers weighing closer to 200 pounds may want a firmer bed though.

Overall Value 4/5

Nolah is a high-value mattress with plenty to offer. The bed has a good combination of pressure relief and support for those who like sleeping on their side and back. Although stomach sleepers may want a firmer bed, the rest should like how it feels. In addition, the company adds a lifetime warranty and gives you 120 nights to test the mattress.
