If you love the pressure relief of memory foam but you tend to sleep hot, the Tempur-Pedic ProBreeze® might be the mattress for you.
This mattress is designed to decrease in temperature by five degrees as you lie on it, absorbing your body temperature to keep you cool through the night. As a hot sleeper myself, I was dubious; after all, memory foam does tend to sleep hot. However, after reviewing it, not just for its cooling abilities, but also for pressure relief, support, motion isolation, and more – I was impressed across the board.
This mattress is available in an all-foam and a hybrid option. In this review, I’ll be discussing the Medium Hybrid model.
Watch My Tempur-Pedic ProBreeze® Video Review
Who I Recommend The ProBreeze® For:
- Hot sleepers – The ProBreeze® is bedecked with cooling foam innovation, which according to Tempur-Pedic, can lower the bed’s temperature by five degrees. When I lay on it, I felt much cooler. This foam also adds excellent pressure relief.
- Side sleepers – Because of the excellent pressure relief, I would say this is a great fit for side sleepers. It can allow the hip and shoulder to sink in comfortably while keeping the spine in alignment.
- Those who want design variety – The Tempur-Pedic ProBreeze® is available in a medium firmness in either an all-foam structure or as a hybrid, which means it contains both foam and coils. For heavyweight sleepers or those who like more support, I’d recommend the hybrid option.
Who I Don’t Recommend The Tempur-Pedic ProBreeze® For:
- Budget shoppers – This mattress includes advanced cooling technology, a 10-year warranty, a 90-night sleep trial, and free white-glove delivery. With all of these perks, though, comes a higher price tag. If you’re looking for a budget mattress.
- Those who prefer a firm mattress – The only firmness option for this mattress is Medium, and you can choose either all-foam or hybrid from there. For those who prefer a firm mattress, I think both the all-foam and hybrid versions will likely be too soft for you.
First Impressions: Firmness & Feel
Firmness Scale: 6 /10 (Medium Firm)
Please remember that firmness is a subjective characteristic and your shape will dictate how you experience a bed. A heavier person whose weight can more easily push through softer comfort and support layers may experience a bed as softer than a lightweight person. The way you are shaped could also play a role here. Consider your weight, shape, and size when evaluating firmness scores.
At Sleep Advisor, we rank mattress firmness on a scale from 1 to 10 in which 10 is the firmest. With that in mind, I’m giving the ProBreeze® a 6 for firmness. This mattress is interesting in that as it absorbs heat from the body, it also seems to soften. When I first lay down on it, it felt like an 8, but as I continued to get comfortable on the bed, it softened to a 6.
Keep in mind, I tried out the hybrid model. I believe the all-foam model would soften even further and may be too soft for some heavyweight sleepers.
How Does It Feel?
When I first lay down on this mattress, it felt firmer and a little more unyielding. However, after a few moments, I could feel the bed getting softer and more cool beneath me. After lying there for several minutes, the bed went from firm-feeling to almost malleable, cushioning, and very pressure-relieving. I could consistently feel the cooling properties at work, from just touching the cover to lying atop the bed.
What I Like About the ProBreeze®
- Noticeably reduces heat – As I lay on this bed, I could feel the heat dissipating in real-time. For those who sleep hot, this should provide some relief.
- Free white-glove delivery – Tempur-Pedic will deliver this mattress, set it up, remove any packaging, and even remove your old mattress and boxspring at no additional charge.
- Excellent pressure relief – For those with hip, shoulder, or joint pain, this mattress will feel like a deep hug on your sensitive areas.
My ProBreeze® Complaints
- Won’t work for combination sleepers – As this mattress softens and cools, it does create a deep sink, which likely won’t work for those moving between positions throughout the night aka the combination sleepers.
- The all-foam version won’t support heavyweight sleepers – I tested the hybrid version, which became softer as I lay on it. With the all-foam version, I imagine it would become even softer and not supportive enough for heavyweight sleepers.
- It’s expensive – This mattress starts at 4,099 dollars, which is likely out of some shoppers’ price range.
Testing the ProBreeze® Mattress: How it Performed
When testing mattresses, I look at certain key factors, including pressure relief, support, firmness, motion isolation, bounce, edge support, and cooling. I also look at how these beds will work for different body types and sleeping positions, as well as whether or not they are a good fit for couples.
For more on our testing methodology, visit our product review process page.
Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types
According to Tempur-Pedic, their mattresses don’t have a weight limit. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that all mattresses will be the best fit for all body types. For example, the Medium Hybrid ProBreeze® is likely a better fit for those carrying more weight as its coils provide some added support, whereas the all-foam version may not be supportive enough for those over 230 pounds.
Side Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – This bed will feel very firm at first for lightweight side sleepers, but after several minutes, it will even out and feel much softer and more pressure-relieving.
- Average Weight Sleepers – This is a good fit for average-weight side sleepers. It will feel soft beneath the hip and shoulder, and while testing it, my spine’s curvature felt intact.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – As time goes on, heavyweight side sleepers sink into the bed. The spine’s alignment still feels fine, but as time goes on, I wonder if this might change.
Back Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – At first, the bed will feel firm for lightweight back sleepers, but then it will adjust to a nice even-keeled firmness level. The spine should feel supported.
- Average Weight Sleepers – This is a great fit for average-weight back sleepers who like a lot of pressure relief. There is a good amount of sink happening, but it still feels comfortable.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – This should feel comfortable for heavyweight back sleepers with a pleasant sinking feeling but not like quicksand.
Stomach Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – At first this bed feels too firm for lightweight stomach sleepers, but it softens over time. The spine is kept propped up, which may impact pressure relief until it softens.
- Average Weight Sleepers – For average-weight stomach sleepers, the lower back should be kept lifted and the pressure relief feels nice below.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – For heavyweight stomach sleepers, the lower back should feel fine but may sink in a good bit. With this in mind, something firmer may be ideal for most heavyweight stomach sleepers.
Pressure Relief & Pain 4/5
Like most Tempur-Pedic beds, the ProBreeze® excels in pressure relief. It feels firmer at first, but as I spent more time on it, I could feel my hips and shoulder sinking down into the mattress, relieving any pressure when on my side.
The sinking wasn’t so much that my spine felt out of alignment, though, which can happen with some extra soft memory foam beds. Overall, there was plenty of cushioning around my shoulders, hips, and other key pressure points that press into the mattress and bear the most weight.

Is the Tempur-Pedic ProBreeze® Good for Pain Relief?
Tempur-Pedic beds are based on the memory foam material developed by NASA and can be helpful for pressure and pain relief. The ProBreeze® has the pain relief you can expect from Tempur-Pedic, but with the added bonus of cooling technology, which may help further relieve pressure by reducing inflammation. That being said, your body weight and sleep position will play a factor in how well it does at pain relief.
Back Pain – When lying on my back, the mattress initially feels firm, but as the cooling absorption kicks in, I can feel my spine sinking comfortably into the mattress. I still feel plenty of lumbar support, though, and I imagine this would be a great fit for sleepers with back pain. However, it may not be firm enough for heavier stomach sleepers, who are more apt to sink in deeper, and this can worsen pain in the lumbar area.
Read More: Top-Rated Mattresses for Back Pain
Hip Pain – People with hip pain need a mattress with plenty of pressure relief if they are sleeping on their sides, and those sleeping on their stomachs need quality support. For side sleepers with hip pain, this mattress is ideal as it cushions this area.
For stomach sleepers with hip pain, this mattress should work well, except it may be slightly too soft for those over 230 pounds. At the very least, I’d recommend the hybrid rather than the foam for stomach sleepers with hip pain.
Shoulder Pain – People with shoulder pain can exacerbate their symptoms by side sleeping on a bed that’s too firm The ProBreeze® may feel firm when you first lie down, but it does soften considerably as it absorbs heat. I felt the pressure drain from my shoulder area as the mattress softened and contoured to my side.

Support 4/5
When talking about support, I’m referring to how well the mattress keeps the spine in healthy, neutral alignment. Sometimes when a mattress is too soft, the spine won’t be fully supported, which can lead to uncomfortable and even damaging curving.
This bed gives nearly perfect spinal alignment. My lumbar region felt lifted and supported in all positions. While the bed was soft and pressure-relieving, it never felt like my lumbar spine was sinking too far into the mattress.
The only note I have is, heavyweight sleepers should definitely go for the hybrid version of the bed for proper support, as the foam will likely sink too much. However, plus-size stomach sleepers may want a firm mattress topper to go on top or a firmer mattress altogether.
Motion Isolation 4/5
Motion transfer measures the amount of disturbance you’re likely to feel if somebody moves on the other side of the bed. This is an important consideration for couples who share a mattress.
On the ProBreeze®, I could barely feel any motion once I was settled into the bed. I only deducted one point because I could still feel motion when my sleeping partner got in and out of the bed.
Temperature Regulation / Cooling 5/5
The Tempur-Pedic ProBreeze® gets a perfect score for its cooling abilities. Tempur-Pedic advertises that the bed should cool down by five degrees. While I am not sure of the exact decrease in temperature, I do know that it got considerably cooler just seconds after lying down.
I did test this mattress without sheets on it, but it was noticeable enough that it should be felt through bedding as well. As such, I think this would be an excellent choice for those who are looking for a good cooling mattress.
Bounce 3/5
If you are accustomed to innerspring beds, this mattress will feel much less bouncy than you are used to. While the hybrid model I tested does include a layer of springs, the mattress as a whole feels more like standard memory foam bed with that traditional “sinking” feeling. The foam on this particular bed also takes some extra time to spring back into its original shape.
Edge Support 4/5
When lying down on this bed, from the middle all the way out to the edges, I felt that my body weight was fully supported. This edge support meant that I could comfortably sleep on the entire surface of the bed without the edges sinking beneath my weight.
The edges sunk slightly when I sat on the edge of the bed, but I still felt supported.
Performance for Couples 4/5
Overall, the ProBreeze® is a great mattress for couples, including couples who tend to sleep hot or are easily disturbed when their partner moves at night. It also has good edge support, so you and your partner should be able to comfortably use the entire bed. However, it doesn’t have the bounce of an innerspring mattress, which may not be ideal for some sexually–active couples who prefer this in a mattress.

Construction: What’s Inside the Tempur-Pedic ProBreeze®?
When ordering your ProBreeze®, you’ll have the option to choose between the Medium or Medium Hybrid models. The Medium is made purely out of foam, whereas the Medium Hybrid is made out of memory foam as well as innerspring coils. We’ll be taking a look at the construction of the Medium Hybrid.
No matter what size bed you get, the ProBreeze® hybrids are all 12 inches thick. Inside the mattress are three distinct layers, which combine to give the bed its unique cooling, pressure-relieving feeling.
- The top layer is made out of Tempur-Pedic’s Pure Cool® Material. This exclusive technology is designed to pull heat away from the body throughout the night so you don’t wake up in a sweat.
- In the middle is a layer of Ventilated Advanced Relief™ Material. This unit is what provides the ProBreeze® with such effective pressure relief. It is a relatively slow-moving foam, which means it will contour to the shape of the body but may take a second to bounce back into its original shape. This foam is also ventilated to increase airflow throughout the bed.
- The bottom layer is made up of over 1,000 premium innerspring coils. This layer is what gives the hybrid model extra support, as well as more ventilation than the all-foam model. These springs are individually wrapped, so the bed still has quality motion isolation and stays quiet.
Unboxing & Off-Gassing
As I mentioned, this bed comes with free white-glove delivery, which means Tempur-Pedic will deliver the mattress, set it up for you, remove any packaging, and remove your old mattress if you so choose. This means unboxing is about as simple as it gets. It also means that there is no off-gassing period because the mattress arrives fully expanded already, which is good news for those who are sensitive to smells.
Certifications
- CertiPUR-US® certified: The foams in this bed are CertiPUR-US® certified. CertiPUR-US® is a third-party program that ensures the foams meet rigorous health and safety standards. This means they don’t contain harmful substances like ozone depleters, PBDEs, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and phthalates. They should also have low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.

For people who tend to sleep hot, the Tempur-Pedic ProBreeze® is an excellent option. This mattress has a unique adaptability; as it cools down, it also softens and molds to the body. This makes it a great choice for pressure relief but might give it too much of a ‘sinking’ feeling for combination or heavyweight sleepers. That said, for most body types and sleep positions, the Medium Hybrid model that I tested should be plenty supportive, especially compared to the all-foam version.
Additionally, the ProBreeze® is about 1,000 dollars less expensive than the very similar LuxeBreeze® model, which makes it a great choice for those with a slightly smaller budget. Overall, this bed received a score of 4 out of 5.
