Sleep Advisor’s Testing Methodology
At Sleep Advisor, our mattress reviews are based on findings from in-person tests that allow us to have a genuine understanding of how the mattress feels and performs. We look at features that are valuable to consumers, such as temperature control, bounce, edge support, and motion isolation.
We also evaluate mattress performance for back, side, and stomach sleeping. Lying in different positions lets us know how supportive the bed is and if it’s good at relieving pressure.
We then take all the information we’ve gathered to rate the bed in specific categories. These results allow us to help our readers find the right mattress for their needs.

Why the Nectar Earned Best California King Mattress Overall
The Nectar is well-rounded, well-priced, and a memory foam staple of the online mattress world. It’s rare to find such a reputable California king for less than $1,500 (or even less than that, with sales), and the Nectar comes with stellar policies as well.
Ordering a Cal king mattress likely means you’ll be sharing it, and the Nectar’s all-foam construction makes it a motion-isolation champion. Its medium-firm feel also balances pressure relief with base support, so you should feel cushioned but not at all swallowed by the bed.
It’s not for every kind of sleeper—stomach sleepers and heavy people should look elsewhere—but all things considered, it’s hard not to put it at the front of the pack.
What’s the Nectar Made Of?
The Nectar is 12 inches high with five total layers: three internal foam layers and a cover on the top and bottom.
- Layer 1 – Top Cover. Polyethylene fibers in this upper cover help to draw excess heat away from you.
- Layer 2 – Gel Memory Foam (2 inches). Memory foam molds around your body to relieve pressure, and an infusion of gel offsets heat retention.
- Layer 3 – Dynamic Response Foam (3 inches). A bouncier, more supportive foam layer than the one above it.
- Layer 4 – ActiveSupport Foam (7 inches). The base of the mattress, it ensures longevity and a strong foundation.
- Layer 5 – Lower Cover. This polyester cover keeps the layers contained.
What I Liked
- Balanced feel – The foam at the top of the Nectar cradled me perfectly when I laid on my back and side. But even as I reveled in the pressure relief, I could feel the base layer supporting my spine. This balance of softness and support is so important in an all-foam bed.
- Awesome policies – Nectar gives you a full year to try out its mattresses, as well as a lifetime warranty. On top of the bed’s affordable pricing, these protective measures make for lots of happy customers.
Potential Drawbacks
- Not quite a cooling mattress – Although the Nectar boasts a cooling cover and gel-infused foam, I didn’t think the effects of this cooling elements were noticeable. If you sleep very hot, you’ll probably want to look at hybrid beds instead.
- Not for plus-size or stomach sleepers – Unfortunately, the Nectar lacks the formidable support and lift that heavy sleepers and stomach sleepers require. Both groups are bound to experience too much sinkage on this mattress.
Customer Reviews of the Nectar
With thousands of reviews on Nectar’s website, the Nectar mattress has an average 4.8 out of 5 stars. One common customer complaint about the Nectar mattress is its longer-than-average break-in period, while many customers praise its excellent value and comfort once fully settled.

Why the Emma Hybrid Comfort Earned Cheap California King Mattress
Upgrading to a California king bed for less than a couple thousand dollars is no mean feat. You’ll want to avoid beds that compromise on quality to sell at a low price, but also steer clear of brands that add needless, expensive features.
The Emma Hybrid Comfort sits comfortably between these poles: it’s a firm, supportive mattress that costs around $1,500 for a California king size, and that price even dips below $1,000 when discounts are active. That’s an eye-catching deal for a hybrid—back and stomach sleepers especially should take note.
What’s the Emma Hybrid Comfort Made Of?
The Emma Hybrid Comfort has seven total layers (five internal layers between two covers) and a 13-inch profile.
- Layer 1 – Top Cover. A moisture-wicking cover made with soft, breathable fabric.
- Layer 2 – Airgocell® Foam. Air pockets in the structure of this cozy foam make it less dense, and therefore less prone to overheating, than older foams.
- Layer 3 – Memory Foam. This layer compresses to align with the curves of your body and dampens motion.
- Layer 4 – HRX Foam. HRX stands for High Resiliency Extra, signalling a firm, spine-aligning foam layer.
- Layer 5 – Zoned Innersprings. Pocketed coils split into seven zones support different regions of the body with a calculated amount of pushback.
- Layer 6 – Foam Base. A durable foam foundation.
- Layer 7 – Lower Cover. Built with handles so you can move the mattress easily, the lower cover also has an anti-slip texture on the bottom to keep it stable on your frame.
What I Liked
- Reliable, even support – Back sleepers, stomach sleepers, and heavy folks should appreciate just how supportive and firm this bed feels. Its thinner foam layers won’t let you sink much at all, and its zoned springs provide a good amount of lift.
- Low price – Emma is a budget-friendly brand, with frequent sales that lower their already-attractive prices. You’ll have trouble finding a more affordable, equally sound hybrid at this coveted size.
Potential Drawbacks
- Too hard for side sleepers – This bed received a 7 out of 10 on our firmness scale, which is decidedly firmer than average. I don’t think side sleepers will get the cushioning their hips and shoulders need from its thin foam layers.
- A bit noisy – One of the foams in this bed made a crinkling noise when I moved around on top of it. It wasn’t loud, but I’m not accustomed to hearing anything from the foam in the mattresses I test, so I think it’s worth mentioning.
Customer Reviews of the Emma Hybrid Comfort
This is a fairly new mattress, so Emma’s site doesn’t have many reviews yet, but early customers already rate it an impressive 5 out of 5 stars. So far customers appreciate the Emma Hybrid Comfort mattress for its excellent motion isolation, but some have reported that it may have a slight initial off-gassing odor upon unboxing.

Why the Helix Midnight Earned Best Hybrid California King Mattress
If you’re shopping for a hybrid California king bed, you likely value bounce, spring-based support, and a “lifting” rather than a “sinking” feel to your mattress. The Helix Midnight is a wonderful choice across these criteria.
My fellow Lead Product Tester Loren found that it also isolated motion surprisingly well, keeping partners from feeling each other’s movements across the mattress’s surface. “But it also has decent responsiveness,” she reported, “so it’s good for sound sleep and sex.”
What’s the Helix Midnight Made Of?
The Helix Midnight has six total layers if you include its top cover. It stands 11.5 inches tall.
- Layer 1 – Top Cover. A slightly stretchy and soft top cover comes standard on the Midnight. For an additional fee, you can swap it for a GlacioTex™ Cooling Cover.
- Layer 2 – Memory Plus Foam. Helix’s branded take on memory foam. It molds to the contours of your body and relieves pressured from taxed joints.
- Layer 3 – Helix Responsive Foam. A bouncy foam that reshapes quickly when you move around on top of it.
- Layer 4 – Helix Respoinsive Foam. A firmer version of the prior foam serves as the transition layer between comfort foams above and the coils below.
- Layer 5 – Coil Unit. Individually wrapped coils make up the primary support layer of the bed. They’re reinforced on the long edges to help with edge support.
- Layer 6 – DuraDense Foam. A thick foam base for stability.
What We Liked
- Side and back sleepers rejoice – Loren thought the Midnight was a great fit for both back and side sleepers. Its foams “keep pressure off of the hips and shoulders of side sleepers; big thumbs up for me here.” Meanwhile, “the balance of comfort and support works extremely well for back sleepers,” with lovely cushioning under the lumbar spine.
- It’s a motion-isolating hybrid – “Since this mattress features coils and responsive foams, we expect it to feel all of our partner’s movements,” said Loren. “But those foams do a lot of heavy lifting to help stifle motion across the bed.”
Potential Drawbacks
- Lackluster edge support – Unfortunately, Loren found herself disappointed in the Midnight’s edges. “Considering the coils are reinforced here, we’re seeing a lot of sinkage. It’s not the worst I’ve ever seen, but it’s certainly not the best,” she reported.
- Too soft for stomach sleeping – Stomach sleepers probably shouldn’t purchase the Midnight, as their hips will sink too low into the preliminary foams. That sinkage can lead to misalignment and even back pain.
Customer Reviews of the Helix Midnight
The Helix Midnight rates 4.5 stars out of 5 on Helix’s website. The main negative is that reviewers tend to find it too soft for their liking and feel as though they’re sinking. But overall, users say they’re getting a great nights’ sleep and some pain relief.

Why the Saatva Classic Earned Best California King Mattress for Back Pain
When you’re getting a big bed, you want even, reliable support throughout—it’s the best safeguard against both a saggy mattress and back pain. The Saatva Classic, with its two innerspring units, takes support seriously. It has several features that concentrate lift under the lumbar spine, helping to give an extra boost to this sensitive area.
Furthermore, my own experience with this bed left me confident that it can work for just about anyone. You can customize its height as well as its firmness to suit your tastes.
What’s the Saatva Classic Made Of?
The Saatva Classic comes in a Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, or Firm feel. You can choose between two heights: 11.5 inches or 14.5 inches. (Note that only the shorter version works with an adjustable base.)
- Organic Cotton Cover. A breathable, soft cover protected by a plant-derived antimicrobial treatment. Its quilting firms up in the middle, just under the lumbar spine.
- Euro Pillow Top. A 3-inch layer of plush foam for pressure relief.
- Memory Foam Lumbar Crown. A strip of memory foam meant to both cushion and contour to the lower back.
- First Innerspring Unit. Pocketed coils compress individually beneath you, with extra-strong coils located beneath the lumbar spine.
- Lumbar Zone® Active Spinal Wire. Nestled within the dual spring units, this bracing wire provides even more support to the lumbar region.
- Second Innerspring Unit. The base innerspring unit features interconnected coils for enhanced durability and sag-prevention.
- Foam Rails. Lining the edges of the bed, these high-density foam rails reinforce the sides.
What I Liked
- Easy delivery and setup – Saatva offers white glove delivery services with all of their mattresses, and when you’re ordering a Cal king, this perk is worth your mattress’s weight in gold. Helpers will not only bring your new bed to the room of your choosing, they’ll also remove your old mattress.
- Personalize your sleep space – Lots of mattresses give you different firmness options, but the Classic is one of very few that allows you to pick between two heights. This level of personalization makes your Saatva feel built for you.
Potential Drawbacks
- You may feel your partner’s movements – Motion isolation isn’t the best on the Saatva Classic. Those spring units give the bed its bounce, but they can’t contain it to just one area.
- Not big on cooling – I didn’t heat up too much on the Saatva Classic, but I didn’t cool down, either. There’s airflow around the springs but otherwise, this bed doesn’t stand out in the temperature regulation department.
Customer Reviews of the Saatva Classic
The Saatva Classic rates 4.8 stars out of 5 on Saatva’s website. One negative aspect customers found with the Saatva Classic mattress is that it may feel too firm for some users, while a notable advantage is its high-quality materials, providing durability and support.

Why the WinkBed Plus Earned Best California King Mattress for Heavy People
The WinkBed Plus was designed and tested to support plus-size sleepers where other mattresses might disappoint. To that end, it incorporates sag-resistant foam, a latex support layer, and an extra-strong sprint unit. The brand also tests these mattresses extensively, trying to reproduce (and stand up to) the wear and tear that would result from 20 years of usage by a 350-pound person. This durability is especially important when you’re considering a bed as big as a California king.
Our plus-size tester, Sean, was a fan. “Overall, this is an excellent mattress, especially if you’re a heavier sleeper like myself. If you’re over 250 pounds, I highly recommend checking out this model,” he said.
What’s the WinkBed Plus Made Of?
- Tencel™ Cover. Derived from the wood pulp of eucalyptus trees, this cover breathes easily and wicks away moisture.
- High-Density Anti-Sag Foam. Dense foam resists sagging while also cushioning the body.
- Latex Support Layer. This 2.5-inch-thick latex sheet is divided into seven zones that provide differing levels of resistance, depending on the area of the body they’re supporting.
- Coil Unit. Engineered to provide reliable support to heavy folks, these coils are individually wrapped and reinforced around the bed’s edges.
The WinkBed Plus is 13.5 inches tall.
What We Liked
- The benefits of latex – Latex is a naturally breathable, hypoallergenic, and springy material that provides both pressure relief and support. Sean dug it because its responsiveness was able to “help with repositioning to keep you from feeling stuck.”
- Welcoming top, supportive base – Mark, one of our testers who weighs just under 200 pounds, also tested the WinkBed Plus. He had this to say: “When I lie down on a firmer mattress, normally I get that tension that builds up in my shoulders. That didn’t happen with this bed. It has a nice big pillow top that really relieves that pressure and gives you a nice minimal cradle. But you also get the good support from the bottom and the springs.”
Potential Drawbacks
- Not as cozy for lightweight sleepers – When Emma, who weighs around 140 pounds, tried the WinkBed Plus, she felt comfortable but also like she wasn’t the right size to experience the bed’s full range of features. “I didn’t get to take advantage of all those wonderful transition layers,” she said.
- Large and tough to move – “The WinkBed Plus is significantly thicker than most beds sold online,” said Sean. We recommend calling up a friend if you need to transport it after it’s unboxed.
Customer Reviews of the WinkBed Plus
With a score of 4.8 out of 5 stars the WinkBed Plus is a hit with sleepers seeking a firm and supportive mattress. Customers appreciate the WinkBed Plus mattress for its exceptional support for heavier individuals, but some have mentioned that it may be too firm for those seeking a softer sleep surface.

Why the Nolah Original Earned Best Memory Foam California King Mattress
Being an all-foam mattress isn’t super special by itself. But being an all-foam mattress with innovative AirFoam™ as its comfort layer? That makes for a memorably sumptuous and soft California king bed.
The AirFoam™ inside the Nolah Original is a proprietary material that reportedly outclasses traditional memory foam at pressure relief, cooling, and durability. When Stuart tested this mattress, he thoroughly enjoyed it on his back and side. When on his back, he said, “I can feel the foams contouring to the curve of my spine. I feel quite a bit of contouring, and nice support coming from the base.” On his side, he liked how “these foams really take the strain off my hips and my shoulders.”
What’s the Nolah Original Made Of?
The Nolah Original is 10 inches tall with four layers.
- Layer 1 – Tencel™ Cover. A white, breathable cover that feels soft and wicks away moisture.
- Layer 2 – AirFoam™ (2 inches). Temperature-neutral AirFoam™ encourages cooling while relieving pressure to soothe your joints and muscles.
- Layer 3 – High-Resilience Foam (1 inch). A more responsive foam layer that adds just a smidge of bounce.
- Layer 4 – High-Density Foam Core (7 inches). The supportive base of the bed.
What We Liked
- Motion isolation is on point – “There was almost no motion transfer at all … super minimal,” Stuart reported. The foams in this bed should do a great job of preventing nighttime disturbances, even if you sleep alongside a restless partner.
- Responsive foams – When he pressed against the AirFoam™ in the Nolah Original, Stuart found that it popped back into its original shape at an impressive speed. “It’s definitely quicker, especially in comparison to memory foam,” he said.
Potential Drawbacks
- Too plush for some people – We awarded the Nolah Original a 5 out of 10 on our firmness scale, which means it’s pretty soft. If you prefer to feel buoyed up by your bed’s support features, it may feel too plush for you.
- Stomach sleepers will want more support – While testing the mattress on his stomach, Stuart said, “I’m not quite getting the support I need in my hips. If you’re a solo stomach sleeper, you might want to look into a different option.”
Customer Reviews of the Nolah Original
On Nolah’s website, the Nolah Original has a rating of 4.7 out of 5 stars. Some customers have noted that the Nolah Original mattress may have less edge support, yet many customers praise its superior pressure relief as a significant advantage.

Why the Titan Plus Earned Best Firm California King Mattress
The Titan Plus was made with heavier sleepers in mind—it can support up to 1,000 pounds—but anyone who enjoys a firmer mattress can benefit from this painstakingly constructed hybrid. Its foams and coils work together to form a supportive, robust California King-sized bed that still doesn’t skimp on the comfort factor.
“Unlike many mattresses that I have tried, my weight is evenly distributed over this surface and I feel extremely comfortable,” said Patrick, one of our plus-size testers.
What’s the Titan Plus Made Of?
The Titan Plus is 11 inches tall with four total layers. For an extra bit of cash, you can add a GlacioTex™ Cooling Cover to the top.
- Layer 1 – Quilted Gel Memory Foam (1 inch). This foam gives the bed a bit of softness at the outset, while the gel helps to prevent overheating.
- Layer 2 – TitanFlex™ Foam (2 inches). A proprietary foam that contours to the curves and pressure points of the body without letting you sink too deep.
- Layer 3 – Coil Unit (6 inches). Individually wrapped TitanCaliber™ provide responsiveness and further support. The coils along its perimeter have a higher gauge and are grouped more tightly, permitting sleepers to spread out without dipping at the edges.
- Layer 4 – High-Density Foam Base (2 inches). The bed’s strong, durable foundation.
What We Liked
- Firm but not unyielding – The upper foam layers of the Titan Plus feel firm, but they aren’t rock-like. “There is little to no pressure build-up,” Patrick said, and added that when he was lying on his side, he felt like the bed was actively relieving pressure.
- Decent motion isolation for a hybrid – According to Patrick, “for as much bounce as this bed has, it contains motion pretty well. Restless sleepers probably won’t wake up their sleeping partners.”
Potential Drawbacks
- Too firm for certain people – Lightweight sleepers and especially petite side sleepers probably won’t love this bed. Its firmness level is just too high for these groups, both of which need lots of cushioning.
- Won’t cradle you – Though there are two foam layers at the top, they won’t let you sink in very deep at all. This isn’t a bed meant for folks who like to be “hugged” by their mattress.
Customer Reviews of the Titan Plus
Users on Titan’s site have given the Titan Plus a 4.7 out of 5 stars. Customers find the Titan Plus mattress to offer exceptional durability and support, but some mention that it might be too firm for those who prefer a softer feel.

Why the DreamCloud Premier Earned Best California King Mattress for Side Sleepers
Although the original DreamCloud is one of my favorite beds as a stomach sleeper, side sleepers should feel much more at home on the DreamCloud Premier. This model boasts a super-plush Euro top that dreamily cradles the hips and shoulders. It’s still a hybrid with plenty of support, and on a California king, you’ll have tons of room to reposition and sleep alongside a partner.
What’s the DreamCloud Premier Made Of?
The DreamCloud Premier is 14 inches tall and has seven layers if you count its top and bottom covers.
- Layer 1 – Top Cover. Made of a cashmere blend, this Euro top cover feels invitingly soft.
- Layer 2 – Memory Foam (1 inch). This plush memory foam is quilted into the above cover.
- Layer 3 – Soft Foam (1 inch). The second layer of foam in the Euro top, it bolsters the memory foam that precedes it.
- Layer 4 – Transition Foam (2.5 inches). A firmer layer of foam that protects you from feeling the spring unit below and encourages healthy alignment.
- Layer 5 – Coil Unit (8.5 inches). Pocketed coils with reinforced springs along the bed’s perimeter.
- Layer 6 – Base Foam (1 inch). A strong foam base.
- Layer 7 – Lower Cover. Handles attached to this cover make the bed easier to move.
What I Liked
- More pressure relief than the original model – The Euro top on this DreamCloud bed makes it a more plush mattress than its predecessor, which is good news for side sleepers. Memory foam and soft foam both cushion you as soon as you lie down.
- Luxury touches – That cashmere cover gives the mattress a sumptuous feel, and the Euro top is a notable bonus feature that the original DreamCloud doesn’t have. But you still get the same generous policies: a lifetime warranty and a year-long sleep trial.
Potential Drawbacks
- Not enough lift for stomach sleepers – My hips dug down a bit too deep into the Euro top for me to recommend this to my fellow stomach sleepers. I’d direct them toward a firmer bed with more lift.
- Motion isolation doesn’t stand out – The DreamCloud Premier absorbs some motion, but not all of it. Its performance in this category didn’t wow me.
Customer Reviews of the DreamCloud Premier
Coming in at 4.5 out of 5 stars on DreamCloud’s site, the DreamCloud Premier receives a majority of positive reviews. Customers praise the DreamCloud Premier mattress for its luxury feel, but some have noted that it may not be the best choice for those on a tighter budget.

Why the Bear Star Hybrid Earned Best California King Mattress for Couples
At a 6 out of 10 on our firmness scale, the Bear Star Hybrid fits right into the most versatile zone in terms of feel. Couples with different firmness preferences may find it to be the ideal California king bed, as it can suit most sleeping positions and has some impressive extra features, too. One of these is its Celliant® cover, which purportedly helps with muscle recovery after a strenuous workout or active day.
What’s the Bear Star Hybrid Made Of?
The Bear Star Hybrid is 13 inches high and has give total layers.
- Cover. Featuring both HydroCool® technology for cooling and the Celliant® performance textile for boosted muscle recovery, this is one of the most high-tech covers we’ve seen.
- Serene Gel Foam. A pressure-relieving foam that cushions the body and resists overheating.
- Responsive Comfort Foam. A bouncier foam that reforms easily to facilitate movement.
- Coil Unit. Individually wrapped coils offer reliable, sturdy support. They’re also stronger along the perimeter of the bed.
- High-Density Support Foam. A grounding base for the entire bed.
What We Liked
- Celliant® in the cover – Celliant® is still being studied, but it may be able to boost blood flow in the areas it touches, thereby encouraging tissue recovery during rest. It’s an advanced textile that we don’t see in many other beds.
- Cooling elements – This hybrid has multiple cooling elements to help it prevent night sweats. Coils that promote airflow, gel infusions in its foam, cooling fibers in the cover all work together to get rid of unwanted heat.
Potential Drawbacks
- Feels a bit firm – According to Stuart, this hybrid “might be too firm for some.” If you love to sink slowly into the layers of your mattress, it’s not the bed for you.
- 13-inch height – At more than a foot high, the Bear Star Hybrid is taller than your average mattress. If you have a lofty base or want to use a box spring, it may be difficult to get in and out of bed.
Customer Reviews of the Bear Star Hybrid
Coming in at approximately 4.5 out of 5 stars on Bear’s site, the Bear Star Hybrid has generally positive reviews. Customers praise the Bear Star Hybrid mattress for its excellent cooling properties, however some have found it to be on the firmer side, which might not be suitable for those seeking a softer feel.

Why the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Earned Best Cooling California King Mattress
If you’re a hot sleeper in need of a bigger bed, the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe is an exceptionally cool California king option. During testing, it took only a little more than five minutes to lower its temperature back to its original level—and then even a bit below it—after I lied down on its surface.
My fellow tester Emma was also stunned by its abilities: “It’s one of the coolest sleeping mattresses that we’ve ever received. Truly … it’s so cold to the touch.”
What’s the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Made Of?
The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe is 13 inches tall with six layers. It’s available in a Soft, Medium, or Firm feel.
- Layer 1 – Cover. GlacioTex™ fibers in this cover help to dissipate unwanted heat.
- Layer 2 – CopperFlex™ Foam (1.5 inches). This responsive foam has both copper and phase change material inside it—both substances that encourage cooling.
- Layer 3 – Supreme Response Comfort Foam (1.5 or 2 inches). A springy and pressure-relieving foam. It’s thicker in the Soft and Medium versions of the bed.
- Layer 4 – Gel Swirl Memory Foam (1 inch) or VariFlex™ Foam (1.5 inches). The Soft and Medium models have gel swirl memory foam for further pressure relief. The Firm model has VariFlex™ foam with a more supportive feel.
- Layer 5 – Coil Unit. Individually wrapped coils make up the primary support feature of the bed, with reinforced springs along the edges.
- Layer 6 – High-Density Foam Base (0.75 inches). A sturdy base on which the coils can rest.
What I Liked
- Super cool – There are so many cooling elements in this bed, and if our testing is any indication, all of them are doing their job. The surface is cool to the touch and the mattress itself stays pleasantly chill even after you lie on it for a while.
- The right amount of lift – While I moved around on this mattress, my spine felt fantastic in every position. I was held aloft, but not too much so.
Potential Drawbacks
- Not very cushy – Side sleepers and petite people may think this bed is a bit too firm for them. It doesn’t have a lot of sink to it, and “sharper” zones like the hips and shoulders may experience pressure buildup.
- Edge support is just all right – I felt secure when lying near the edges of this bed, but when I sat on them, they dipped quite a lot.
Customer Reviews of the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe
On Brooklyn Bedding’s site, the Aurora Luxe has a rating of 4.7 out of 5 stars. Customers praise the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe mattress for its advanced cooling features, but some have mentioned that it is relatively expensive compared to other options.

What is a California King Mattress?
A California King mattress is an alternate, longer version of a standard king-size mattress. California King beds are 72 inches wide and 84 inches long, whereas traditional King mattresses are 76 inches wide and 80 inches long. These mattresses are also called Cal Kings, Cali Kings, and Western Kings.
What to Look for in a California King Mattress
Like the state that it is named after, California King mattresses are long and have a more moderate width than their King counterparts. Given the unique size of these beds, you will want to make sure that your room can accommodate one.
Once the measurements have been checked, the type of mattress that you sleep on is another factor that you will want to consider, along with other important mattress features that can impact how the bed performs for you.
Type of Mattress
Innerspring Mattresses
Traditional innerspring mattresses typically have coils that are interconnected along with a thinner comfort layer on top. This type of coil system provides a lot of bounce, but the offset of that is that these mattresses don’t isolate motion very well.
However, many modern innerspring mattresses use pocketed coils that are individually wrapped in fabric, allowing the coils to move independently rather than one solid unit, which cuts down on motion transferring from one side of the bed to the other.
Innerspring mattresses also allow for ample airflow, and this often makes them a good choice for people who sleep hot. The downside to innerspring beds, though, is that they don’t offer much pressure relief because of the thin top layer.
Hybrid Mattresses
Hybrid mattresses combine foam and coils. This design can provide the cooling and supportiveness of innerspring mattresses, with the pressure-relieving and motion-isolating properties of foam.
In addition to the cooling provided by the coils, some hybrid mattresses will also offer gel-infused foams, breathable fabrics, and other cooling properties that can provide substantial cooling benefits. The combination of coils and foam often makes them more expensive than innerspring or memory foam beds.
Memory Foam Mattresses
Memory foam mattresses usually contain memory foam at the top followed by denser poly foam layers toward the bottom. These types of beds have much to offer in the ways of motion isolation and pressure-relieving contouring.
However, foam can be slow-moving and this may cause combination sleepers or sexually active couples to feel stuck when they are repositioning. Additionally, the density of foam makes it ideal for heat retention. Fortunately, manufacturers have taken note of this issue and implemented many cooling properties into their all-foam mattresses.
Latex Mattresses
Latex mattresses are more responsive and naturally cooler than memory foam and poly foam. The responsiveness of these mattresses makes them great for combination sleepers, people with limited mobility, and those who are sexually active as this material will help them to move freely.
Some latex mattresses are natural, organic, and sustainable, putting them at the forefront for eco-conscious shoppers. Latex is known to be durable, but it is also one of the more expensive types of beds on the market.
Other Considerations When Shopping for a California King Mattress
Sleeping Position
The position you sleep in will make a huge impact on which bed you should choose, specifically when it comes to firmness levels. Typically, side sleepers may find better pressure relief on a softer bed, while back sleepers and exclusive stomach sleepers should like a firmer surface for spine alignment.
Weight/Body Type of Sleepers
A California King mattress will give even the biggest sleepers plenty of room to move about. However, when considering the type of mattress that will work best for your weight and body type, the dimensions of the bed aren’t the only thing you need to consider.
Your weight directly impacts the materials and firmness of a mattress that will most likely work best for you. Average-weight sleepers can be well-served by a variety of materials, but for the most part, they will want a bed that is medium-firm. Lighter people need softer mattresses to keep pressure from building up, whereas heavier people usually sleep better on firmer mattresses that prevent them from pushing through the upper comfort layers too quickly.
Firmness
The level of firmness that will work best for you will depend on factors such as your preferred sleep position, weight, and personal preferences.
Most California King mattresses will be available in a wide variety of firmness levels. A medium firmness, however, is a tried and true preference for many sleepers, including those of average weight, combination sleepers, and those who prefer to sleep on their backs. If you are a heavyweight or stomach sleeper, you will probably want your California King mattress on the firmer side, but if you are a lighter person, a softer bed will help provide a more comfortable night’s sleep.
Cooling
Staying cool throughout the night is crucial to enjoying the kind of restorative sleep that helps keep you healthy and well-rested. The types of materials used in a mattress can directly impact how well the bed keeps you cool when you’re sleeping.
Innerspring and hybrid mattresses are generally cooler because the springs let air flow freely. Latex is also helpful because it’s temperature-neutral. Memory foam is generally the hottest choice, but manufacturers have taken note of this and have implemented a variety of cooling properties and technologies.
Motion Isolation
Co-sleepers have to be concerned about their sleeping preferences as well as the movements of their partners. If the nighttime movements of your spouse, child, or pet are transferred from their sleeping area to yours, it can disturb your sleep.
California King-size beds should give you plenty of room to move around, but if your bed doesn’t isolate motion well the size won’t matter as much. Memory foam and hybrid mattresses with memory foam generally perform better at keeping motion isolated to one side of the bed, though we’d recommend a memory foam mattress containing only foam if you’re an especially light sleeper.
Sex
California King mattresses can give sexually active couples ample room to move around during their intimate moments. However, the type of material of the bed can help or hinder how easily couples are able to move about.
Latex, innerspring, and hybrid mattresses can offer more responsiveness and bounce to help prevent people from feeling stuck when they are engaged in sex. Memory foam offers gentle contouring, but its slow-moving nature may cause people to feel stuck when they are moving about during sex.
Pressure Relief
There are few pleasures better than slipping into a spacious California King bed and feeling the strain and stress of the day melt away, and that is why pressure relief is a highly sought-after characteristic for mattresses.
Memory foam and latex beds can offer excellent pressure relief because these materials contour the body, which helps stave off pressure buildup. If you like the durability and bounce provided by innerspring mattresses, you may want to consider a hybrid instead because the upper foam layers will provide you with more pressure relief than traditional innerspring mattresses, which typically only have a thin layer of cushioning between you and the metal coils.
Edge Support
Having good support around the perimeter of your mattress means that you won’t feel as if you’re falling off the bed if you sleep near the edge. Even in a larger bed such as a California King, good edge support is beneficial for those who co-sleep because it can allow you to utilize the entire surface area. Additionally, having a reinforced perimeter can help those with mobility issues get in and out of bed more easily.
Innerspring and hybrid beds generally have stronger edge support, whereas many memory foam and latex mattresses provide edge support through sturdier foams along the sides.
Budget
If you are looking to save more money, this size may not be the right choice. California King and King mattresses are much bigger, which means they cost more than smaller mattress sizes. Many manufacturers sell Kings and California Kings for the same price, but it depends on the brand.
Bed Frames
Given the unique size of California King mattresses, you will want to ensure that you have a frame that will match the dimensions of your bed. California Kings are approximately 4 inches longer than a standard King mattress, with a width that is around 4 inches less. There are some universal frames that can be adjusted to fit a variety of bed sizes, but if your frame is designated for a King-size bed, it likely won’t be compatible with your California King mattress.
Sheets and Bedding
When shopping for sheets and other bedding, such as comforters and duvets, for your California King-size bed, you will need to keep the unique dimensions of your bed in mind. Therefore, try to find bedding that’s specifically made for California King mattresses. For instance, if you buy a standard King-size comforter, it may touch the floor on the sides and come up short at the foot of the bed.
Bedroom Size and Transport
Like the state that they were named after, California Kings are long. They are often used in rooms that are long, but perhaps a little narrower than others. You will need to measure your room to make sure that it can accommodate the bed’s size while leaving room for other furniture and walking paths.
You will also want to account for the unique size when it comes to transporting your bed through various doorways and up or down staircases if you have them.

Best California King Mattress FAQs
How big is a California King-size bed?
A California King-size mattress is 84 inches long and 72 inches wide. It’s the longest standard mattress size available.
Is a California King bigger than a King?
A California King-size bed actually has less total surface area than a King. It’s both longer and narrower than a traditional King-size mattress, so it does offer more space for tall people to stretch out lengthwise.
Do King-size sheets fit a California King mattress?
No, King-size sheets are made to fit a shorter, wider mattress. If you buy King-size sheets for your California King-size bed, you’ll probably find that they’re too short to fit over the long sides of the mattress.
Why is this size called a California King?
Although, there are several stories circulating the internet about the California King’s origin1, Karin Mahoney of the International Sleep Products Association states that mattresses were developed in the 1920s for Hollywood celebrities, and this is why they were given their West Coast name. California Kings were actually designed before standard Kings. The demand for bigger beds increased after World War II, and manufacturers designed the regular King-size beds so that they would fit on two Twin XL box springs.
How much is a California King bed?
A California King-size mattress will usually cost more than 1,000 dollars, and especially luxurious models will cost more than 2,000 dollars.
Some mattress brands price their California Kings the same as their King-size models, whereas others make them a tad more expensive due to their more specialized status. Accessories and bedding for California King-size beds also tend to be a bit pricier than corresponding King-size versions.
Is there a bed bigger than the California King?
Yes. Texas, Wyoming, and Alaskan King-size beds are all bigger than California Kings (and traditional King-size mattresses). However, these specialty sizes are tough to find, and even harder to shop for in terms of accessories.
Their dimensions are as follows:
- Wyoming King: 84 inches long, 84 inches wide
- Texas King: 80 inches long, 98 inches wide
- Alaskan King: 108 inches long, 108 inches wide
