Why the Saatva Classic Earned Best Innerspring Mattress for an Adjustable Bed
Since the company’s beginnings, Saatva’s innerspring mattresses have delivered exceptional support for a wide range of body types and sizes. Now, as an established luxury mattress brand that sells its own adjustable base, Saatva has redesigned their flagship bed to flex easily into a wide range of positions. This bed should deliver a significant amount of bounce even as it bends with your adjustable frame.
One important note: Shoppers hoping to place this bed on an adjustable frame should order the 11.5-inch model, as the 14.5-inch one won’t be pliant enough to move with the base.
What’s the Saatva Classic Made Of?
The Classic doesn’t compromise on cushioning: each mattress comes with a 3-inch Euro pillow top in one of three firmness levels (Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, or Firm). It’s overlaid with an organic, breathable cotton cover that guards against irritating allergens.
Under the pillow top is a layer of memory foam concentrated in the middle third of the mattress. This high-density foam bolsters the lumbar spine while also relieving pressure from the area of the body that exerts the most force on the bed.
The Saatva Classic further distinguishes itself from competitors by having what’s called a “coil-on-coil” construction. That’s right—it has two coil units instead of one. The first is a layer of micro coils that supports your body while molding to your shape, and the second is an interconnected system of coils that resists sag and ups durability.
Integrated with the coils is Saatva’s Lumbar Zone® Active Spinal Wire, which encircles and supports that same midsection area targeted by the upper layer of memory foam.
Around the borders of the bed, segments of high-density foam prevent the edges from dipping, even when pressure is applied. As Julia, one of our testers, remarked: “Lying and sitting at the edge, I was completely secure.”
What We Liked
- Memorable lumbar support – The Saatva Classic is a big proponent of back support, and includes exclusive Lumbar Zone® Technology in the bed’s center third to buoy this often-overlooked part of the spine. Even when on her back and stomach, Julia commented that her midsection “feels perfectly lifted.”
- Two coil units – Not many other mattresses incorporate two innerspring units into their design. The Classic should delight fans of traditional innerspring mattresses with its modernized approach to support and responsiveness.
- White glove delivery and setup – Saatva never compresses their mattresses into boxes. Instead, they deliver and set them up for free with their white glove delivery service.
Potential Drawbacks
- Motion transfer – The Saatva Classic’s innerspring construction does mean that motion transfer is more noticeable than with all-foam designs. “You can definitely feel big movements,” said Julia, though she added that “small shifts are pretty even-keeled.”
- Comfortable but not super-cool – The Classic’s coils do permit airflow, and its cover is breathable, but it doesn’t have a ton of dedicated cooling bells and whistles. “[I] wouldn’t say this is specifically a cooling mattress,” Julia said. “I felt like my body temperature was maintained throughout the duration of testing.”
Customer Reviews of the Saatva Classic
The Saatva Classic rates 4.8 stars out of 5 on Saatva’s website. One negative aspect customers found with the Saatva Classic mattress is that it may feel too firm for some users, while a notable advantage is its high-quality materials, providing durability and support.

Why the Nectar Earned Best Adjustable Memory Foam Mattress
Nectar set out to introduce a memory foam mattress that improved upon traditional designs while retaining the foam’s coveted feel. The result is a mattress with cooling gel, a strong support system, and the right amount of malleability for an adjustable base. This bed should be compatible with most adjustable bed frames, but Nectar has also designed its own high-tech adjustable base to complement the mattress.
Notably, Nectar’s signature mattress is one of the most affordable on the market. Their generous 365-night sleep trial and warranty help to make it a low-risk purchase and add to its exceptional value.
What’s the Nectar Mattress Made Of?
The Nectar is 12 inches thick and starts with a soft and breathable cover that should wick away excess moisture. Beneath are three foam layers that each perform different duties. All of the foams are CertiPUR-US® certified, meaning they lack certain potentially harmful chemicals and have passed stringent emissions testing.
The first 2-inch layer is made of gel-infused memory foam, which gives the mattress its signature cradling feel. The second is a 3-inch transition layer consisting of a more responsive foam. This “dynamic response layer” is adept at motion isolation and also encourages a neutral spinal alignment. It leads into the base layer: 7 inches of strong, sturdy ActiveSupport foam.
Finally, the lower cover prevents the layers of the mattress from shifting out of place.
What We Liked
- Contouring memory foam – The Nectar is known for its cozy memory foam, and our tester Emma confirmed that this bed provided “loads of pressure relief.”
- Minimal motion transfer – The Nectar excels at motion isolation, keeping nighttime disturbances to a minimum even if you or your partner needs to get out of bed. Both Jill and Emma testified to the Nectar’s suitability as a shared sleeping space.
- Budget-friendly price – This brand has made a name for itself by building quality beds and offering them at affordable prices. Especially during promotions, you should be able to snag a Nectar for less money than many competing models.
Potential Drawbacks
- Less support for heavy and stomach sleepers – The foams in the Nectar might cause too much sinkage around the hips for these demographics. As Emma remarked, “I need a little bit more support in my hips to make sure that my back stays aligned.”
- Hotter than a hybrid – With no springs to speak of, the Nectar can’t achieve the same amount of airflow as a hybrid bed. The gel infusions in the first foam layer can help to keep things chill, but as Jill said, “It didn’t provide as much cooling as we’d hoped, though we do live in an exceptionally warm area.”
Customer Reviews of the Nectar
With thousands of reviews on Nectar’s website, the Nectar mattress has an average 4.8 out of 5 stars. One common customer complaint about the Nectar mattress is its longer-than-average break-in period, while many customers praise its excellent value and comfort once fully settled.

Why the Helix Midnight Earned Best Adjustable Mattress for Side Sleepers
The Helix Midnight’s medium-firm feel and the support derived from its hybrid construction make it a natural choice for many types of sleepers. For side sleepers especially, our tester Emma said she liked that “my hips and shoulders have a little cushion around them.”
Pair these elements with an adjustable base—Helix offers its own model—and you’ll be able to access a whole new world of customized relaxation. If you also sleep on your back, you might enjoy the custom “zero gravity” position that elevates both your head and feet.
What’s the Helix Midnight Made Of?
Inside the Midnight are three layers of comfort-forward foams, plus a coil unit and base layer of DuraDense foam. The topmost layer of Memory Plus foam is formulated for pressure relief, whereas the two layers of Helix Responsive foam beneath it offer support and even more cozy compression.
The coils that form the foundation of the bed are individually wrapped, and can therefore mitigate motion transfer much better than interconnected springs. The long sides of the coil unit are reinforced as well, to prevent the sides of the mattress from dipping. These materials result in a balanced mattress that’s a good fit for couples, even if each partner has slightly different sleep preferences.
The Helix Midnight offers you a choice between two covers: the standard Soft Touch cover, or an upgraded cover that aims to dissipate heat with its GlacioTex™ Cooling fabric.
What We Liked
- Adaptable feel – The medium-firm feel of the Helix Midnight should have broad appeal. It’s the right blend of bracing and soft, and should cater to side and back sleepers in particular. As Emma put it, “The mix of comfort and support is just right.”
- Stops motion, but retains bounce – Even though it gets some springiness from its coils, the Helix Midnight doesn’t transfer too many ripples across its surface. “We were actually really surprised by how well it isolated motion,” Emma said.
- A safe choice for couples – When we had two reviewers lie down on the Midnight, they were impressed by both its motion isolation and its edge support. They recommended it for anyone who shares a bed, “whether that’s with a partner or the family dog.”
Potential Drawbacks
- Stomach sleepers may need more support – When Emma switched to lying on her stomach, she could feel her hips sink a little too much into the Midnight’s layers. “I’m still decently comfortable, but I might suggest a firmer mattress for exclusive stomach sleepers,” she said.
- Not as cradling as other beds – If you prefer the deep, hug-like sensation that an all-foam bed offers, this hybrid model may not be for you.
Customer Reviews of the Helix Midnight
The Helix Midnight rates 4.5 stars out of 5 on Helix’s website. The main negative is that reviewers tend to find it too soft for their liking and feel as though they’re sinking. But overall, users say they’re getting a great nights’ sleep and some pain relief.

Why the Nolah Evolution Earned Editor’s Pick
One of our testers, Stuart, characterized this mattress as “packed with soft layers for plush relief.” “Packed” is indeed the right word—the Nolah Evolution stands out amongst other beds with its sizable 15-inch profile. Inside that impressive height are proprietary materials, a zoned coil system, and cooling elements in almost every layer.
Even with this lofty, luxurious design, the Nolah Evolution is bendable enough to pair with an adjustable base. Nolah makes its own adjustable bed frames with a long list of bells and whistles, including massage motors and voice-activated controls.
What’s the Nolah Evolution Made Of?
This bed is a hybrid model with a remarkable number of layers. If you include the top cover and the border fabric with carrying handles, you’ll count nine total.
The Evolution’s cover combines organic cotton with ArcticTex™ fibers that keep the bed’s surface chilled. Underneath is a pillowy Euro topper made of 2 inches of foam. The topper’s quilting is labeled “HTC” for “high thermal conductivity,” meaning it should also help to dissipate excess heat. It’s also encased in a gusset designed to vent warmth.
Next is the arguable star of the show: 2 inches of the brand’s proprietary AirFoamICE™. It’s a cooling foam infused with graphite, and its pressure-relieving properties are said to surpass those of traditional memory foam. It’s followed by a supportive high-resilience foam, and a subsequent layer of transition foam with latex-like responsiveness.
At the base of the bed are its sturdy coils. According to Nolah, the HDMax™ coil unit can provide up to 25% more support than traditional innerspring systems. The unit is also zoned into three sections to target different parts of the back, and the coils along its perimeter have a thicker gauge for pronounced edge support. The springs rest on top of a layer of recycled plant fiber that gives them a stable, long-lasting foundation.
What We Liked
- Choose your firmness – The Nolah Evolution is both luxurious and versatile. It’s available in Plush, Luxury Firm, and Firm versions, and its responsiveness allows for easy repositioning. As Stuart put it, “Even though it’s got some plush[ness] and sink to it, I was still able to move around and reposition easily without feeling like I was being sucked in by quicksand.”
- Strong edges – The reinforced edges not only make it easy to get in and out of bed, but they increase the surface area available for well-supported rest. “This is an excellent mattress for couples,” Stuart remarked. “You could build your house on Nolah’s edge support.”
- Lots of cooling – Those who run hot at night should appreciate the Evolution’s bevy of cooling features, which outnumber those of many competitors.
Potential Drawbacks
- It’s on the pricey side – The Nolah Evolution is a bit more costly than other mainstream online mattresses, which makes sense given its thoughtful construction.
- It’s big and heavy – Due to the height and size of this bed, you may need some help maneuvering it once it’s been unboxed. Stuart echoed this point: “Make sure you have someone available to help you set this thing up, as it’s thicker than most of the mattresses we work with.”
Customer Reviews of the Nolah Evolution
Earning a 4.9 out of 5 stars on Nolah’s website, the Nolah Evolution seems to be a hit. Customers appreciate the Nolah Evolution mattress for its superior pressure relief, but some have mentioned that the edge support could be improved for a more consistent sleep surface.

Why the WinkBed Earned Best Mattress for Hot Sleepers
The EcoCloud mattress from WinkBeds is not only an eco-friendly model, but the materials featured in it are designed to promote more breathability and cooling, as our reviewer, Stuart, points out. This, combined with the fact that the EcoCloud is compatible with adjustable bases, earned it the title of “Best for Hot Sleepers.”
What’s the WinkBed Made Of?
As mentioned, this mattress is an eco-friendly option from WinkBeds. The EcoCloud stands 12.5 inches high, starting with a .5-inch thick cover made of 100 percent cotton and New Zealand wool. Both are sustainable and help with moisture-wicking and breathability. Below the cover is a layer of Talalay latex followed by a unit of individually-wrapped coils.
What We Liked
- Sustainable material – This bed comes with multiple eco-friendly materials, such as New Zealand wool and organic cotton. For this reason, we think the EcoCloud would be a good match for eco-conscious consumers looking for a bed that’s better for the planet.
- The versatile feel – We consider the EcoCloud to have a medium firmness, making this a great versatile option for combination sleepesrs who rotate positions or couples sharing a bed.
Potential Drawbacks
- Not an all-foam design – Hybrids offer sleepers the benefit of having both foam and coils in a mattress. That being said, people who prefer the feel of an all-foam design may not like the EcoCloud.
- Limited firmness options – While the brand’s flagship model, the WinkBed, is available in three firmness options, the EcoCloud only comes in one. Even though we feel the EcoCloud has a great versatile feel that should be accommodating for many different people, some shoppers might enjoy the option to pick a more tailored fimrness level.
Customer Reviews of the WinkBed
On the WinkBeds site, the WinkBed earns a 4.8 out of 5 stars. One drawback of the WinkBed mattress is that it might be too expensive for budget-conscious shoppers, but overall it offers excellent durability and customizable firmness options.

Why the Titan Plus Earned Best Mattress for Heavyweight Sleepers with an Adjustable Bed
The Titan Plus is specially constructed for heavyweight sleepers, with durable layers that keep them well-supported for optimal comfort and spinal alignment. At the same time, its 11-inch thickness has enough flexibility to work well with an adjustable bed frame.
Feel-wise, this is a particularly firm bed that balances sturdiness and coziness. Our plus-sized reviewer, Patrick, was quite taken with it: “Unlike many mattresses that I have tried, my weight is evenly distributed over this surface and I feel extremely comfortable.”
What’s the Titan Plus Mattress Made Of?
The Titan Plus sits at 11 inches tall with four internal layers.
The first is a 1-inch layer of gel memory foam. As you nestle into this material, you should create just enough sinkarge to get cozy without sacrificing the bed’s overall firmness. The gel infusions should also keep the foam pleasantly cool.
The next 2-inch layer is made of TitanFlex™ foam. This foam exhibits “responsive contouring,” which means that it molds around the parts of your body that exert the most force. It also serves as a transitional layer between you and the mattress’s coils.
The springs in this bed take up 6 inches of its interior and are exceptionally strong. They can support up to 1,000 pounds, and are individually wrapped (instead of interconnected) to prevent too much motion transfer.
The coil unit rests on a 2-inch base layer of high-density foam, which stabilizes the entire mattress.
What We Liked
- Keeps heavy sleepers lifted – This mattress is built for long-lasting, palpable support. The sturdy springs and foams collaborate to buoy you up rather than suck you in. “I definitely sink in a little bit, but this mattress feels supportive enough that I don’t feel stuck at all,” said Patrick.
- Cool all the way through – Gel-infused foam and springs that permit airflow mean that the Titan Plus stays chilled-out during the night. “If you sleep hot, you should sleep great on this mattress,” said our tester Emma. You can also choose to add a GlacioTex™ Cooling Cover for extra cooling oomph, though it costs a tad more money.
- Reliable edge support – This bed’s signature support doesn’t cop out at the edges. “The edge to edge coils are super strong,” said Patrick. “if you like to spread out, strong edges are going to be a really nice advantage.”
Potential Drawbacks
- Too firm for lighter sleepers – Although Patrick really enjoyed the feel of this bed, Emma, who weighs around 140 pounds, found it a bit too firm for her liking. This discrepancy is to be expected—as Patrick put it, “A lot of that firmness that [a lighter person] feels will be wiped away by a heavier individual as they allow their weight to sink into the mattress.”
- Not a lot of sinkage – That first layer of memory foam will have a bit of give to it, but this isn’t a mattress that cradles you. If you’re looking to get hugged by your bed, we recommend exploring other options.
Customer Reviews of the Titan Plus
Users on Titan by Brooklyn Bedding’s site have given the Titan Plus a 4.7 out of 5 stars. Customers find the Titan Plus mattress to offer exceptional durability and support, but some mention that it might be too firm for those who prefer a softer feel.

Why the Bear Original Earned Best Adjustable Mattress for Back Pain
The Bear Original is an all-foam bed with a twist: although its first layer of gel memory foam cradles the body, its construction gives it an overall firm feel. This is a great setup for sleepers with back pain, who need a hard-to-find combination of pressure relief and solidity.
What’s more, for an added fee, you can add a textile called Celliant® to this mattress’s cover. Celliant® may encourage localized blood flow and tissue recovery, desirable effects for anyone with a sore back.
Finally, the low profile and high malleability of the Bear Original make it an excellent match for adjustable bases.
What’s the Bear Original Mattress Made Of?
The Bear Original begins with a cover made from TENCEL™ fibers, which are derived from wood pulp to create a soft, breathable fabric.
If you pay an additional fee, however, you can swap this cover for one made with Celliant® fibers. This material was engineered to help the body’s tissues recover from strenuous activity. Studies on its capabilities are ongoing, but it may be able to boost blood flow around the areas it touches, and even up the quality and duration of your sleep.
Underneath the cover are three foam layers. The first is a sheet of memory foam infused with graphite gel, which keeps the foam from overheating. This layer conforms to your pressure points and aims to relieve strain from your most overworked joints.
The next layer is a transition foam that’s a tad firmer than the above memory foam, but still offers pressure relief. At the base is a thick layer of high-density foam that gives the bed a robust foundation.
What We Liked
- Firmer foams – The firm feel of this bed make it an excellent candidate for back and stomach sleepers, as well as heavier side sleepers. Stuart is a combination sleeper, and he saw this bed’s firmness as an advantage. “It’s a little firmer than the typical all-foam mattress, which should make it a little bit more versatile for different kinds of sleepers.”
- Awesome motion isolation – Stuart praised this bed’s motion-isolating abilities, and labeled it a “great option for couples.” Because the foam layers handily absorb movement, “it’s not likely you’ll disturb one another’s sleep.”
- The Celliant® factor – Although the jury is out on how big a different Celliant® makes, and it costs extra to add it to this bed’s cover, we’re into the idea of a fabric that could help us recover from a tough workout.
Potential Drawbacks
- Side sleepers may not love it – We had one of our exclusive side sleepers (Mark) test this mattress, and he wasn’t completely sold. “When I was laying on my side, it was maybe just a little bit too firm. I was comfortable, but I do think I would have a hard time sleeping on it overnight,” he said.
- No specialized edge support – The foams in this bed are quite supportive throughout, but there’s no defined edge support system. Per Stuart, sitting on the very outside of the mattress does cause the edge to “buckle a bit.” However, when he was lying down on the bed, he felt more secure at the edge: “It doesn’t feel too much like I’m falling out.”
Customer Reviews of the Bear
On Bear’s website, the Bear Original has more than 10,000 reviews and an average rating of 4.3 out of 5 stars. Customers appreciate the Bear Original mattress for its cooling features, yet some express concerns about a potential initial off-gassing odor.

Why the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Earned Best Adjustable Mattress for Couples
We think those in need of a mattress that is both compatible with adjustable bases and a great match for couples should consider the Signature Hybrid from Brooklyn Bedding. The Signature Hybrid, particularly the Medium model, is going to have the most accommodating feel for both partners.
While testing the mattress, our reviewer, Emma, pointed out that this mattress excelled in several areas that are valuable to couples, including minimal motion transfer and strong edges. As such, this bed earned “Best for Couples.”
What’s the Signature Hybrid Made Of?
The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid is a total of 11.75 inches high. The construction starts with a breathable cotton cover followed by the brand’s proprietary TitanFlex™ comfort foam that’s also infused with cooling TitaniumGel™.
Below this is VariFlex™ transition foam and then the layer of individually-wrapped coils. The coil unit also has high-caliber Ascension® coils along the perimeter for edge support. A .25-inch thick layer of high-density foam sits at the base of this mattress.
What We Liked
- Strong edges – While testing the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid, Emma noted, “The edges of this bed hold up great. I can lay right on the edge without feeling like I’m going to fall out. This makes the bed feel a lot bigger because you can maximize every inch of the surface, which is ideal if you share a mattress with a partner, kids, pets, whomever.”
- Multiple firmness options – The Signature Hybrid is available in three firmness levels: Soft, Medium, and Firm. This allows shoppers to pick a feel more tailored to their specific preferences and needs. However, we think couples should first try out the Medium option, which is going to have a more middle-ground feel.
Potential Drawbacks
- Not as cradling as other models – Although the top of this bed is quite soft, the coil unit will prevent you from sinking very deeply into it. If you’re looking for your mattress to “hug” you, you might want a different model.
- Short on cooling elements – This particular Brooklyn Bedding model doesn’t have as many cooling features as upgraded, pricier versions.
Customer Reviews of the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid
On Brooklyn Bedding’s website, the Brooklyn Signature has 4.7 out of 5 stars. The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid mattress receives praise from customers for its versatility with different firmness options, but some have mentioned that it may produce slight noise when bearing weight.

Why the Birch Natural Earned Best Organic Mattress for an Adjustable Bed
If you need a new mattress for an adjustable base, and you’re interested in beds that incorporate organic materials, the Birch Natural should be a lovely fit. Our reviewer, Stuart, put it this way: “The Birch Natural mattress should make a great bed for eco-conscious sleepers who want lots of bounce and a medium feel.”
This bed showcases a certification for its organic components from GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard), and boasts additional credentials from organizations such as eco-INSTITUT and GREENGUARD Gold by UL Environment.
These latter certificates attest that the bed has been tested for certain harmful chemicals and emissions and subsequently been endorsed for use, not only for the general public but also for more vulnerable demographics such as seniors and children.
What’s the Birch Natural Mattress Made Of?
The Birch Natural’s cover is made with organic, fair-trade cotton. It’s followed by layers of organic wool that play a dual role: they add comfort and replace synthetic fire retardants.
A transition layer of Talalay latex provides both support and comfortable springiness, as well as cooling properties. The latex is 100% natural and sustainably harvested from rubber trees, resulting in a breathable, responsive foam that also relieves pressure from the body.
Beneath the latex, the mattress’s coil unit has individually wrapped springs to aid in motion isolation. The coils are also reinforced on the long sides of the bed so that you can sit or lie at the edge without causing it to sag. There’s even an additional layer of wool underneath the coils for increased stability and fire protection.
What We Liked
- Lots of responsiveness – The Birch Natural has a notable bounciness to its feel, which is a boon for combination sleepers, sexually active couples, and anyone who likes to reposition themselves during the night. Stuart agreed: “I really appreciate the way the latex and coils respond to my movements, helping me to switch positions easier without feeling stuck in the bed.”
- Edges that don’t dip – The lengthwise edge support is supremely effective. “It feels like I can really utilize the entire mattress,” said Stuart.
- Good for the environment and your home – This bed has undergone rigorous testing and earned multiple certifications that attest to the eco-friendliness of its materials.
Potential Drawbacks
- Might be too hard for side sleepers – “It’s not the softest mattress when I’m lying on my side,” Stuart commented. If you tend to feel a lot of pressure buildup in your hips and shoulders, we recommend outfitting this bed with a soft topper.
- Poor motion isolation – The springiness of this bed can cause some motion transfer. If you sleep next to a partner, you may notice their movements during the night. Per Stuart, “If you’re looking for something that absorbs motion … you may prefer memory foam over latex.”
Customer Reviews of the Birch Natural
According to Birch’s website, the Birch Natural scores a 4.6 out of 5 stars. While some users consider the Birch Natural mattress to be on the pricier side, it gains customer appreciation for its organic materials and sustainable, eco-friendly construction.

Why the TEMPUR-Adapt Hybrid Earned Best for Side Sleepers
Note: To make sure you’re viewing the hybrid version of this mattress, select “Medium Hybrid” under “Feel” on the product site.
This mattress combines the Tempur-Pedic® brand’s signature materials with the springiness of a hybrid construction, netting you a lovely blend of pressure relief and support. It’s full of unique comfort features, but thankfully, they don’t inhibit the bed’s ability to flex along with an adjustable base.
What’s the TEMPUR-Adapt Made Of?
According to Tempur-Pedic®, the hybrid versions of the TEMPUR-Adapt® tend to feel more plush than the models without springs. That’s because the hybrid beds begin with a 3-centimeter layer of TEMPUR-ES® material, an even softer variant of the original TEMPUR® material.
The original TEMPUR® material then makes up the next 5-centimeter layer, and both foams work together to respond to your weight, pressure points, and body temperature as soon as you relax onto the bed.
Underneath, a spring unit consisting of more than 1,000 individually wrapped coils ensures that this mattress feels pleasantly responsive. The springs allow for easy repositioning during the night, and reinforce the edges of the bed to prevent dipping or sagging if you roll near the borders.
What We Liked
- It lets you switch positions with ease – This hybrid mattress is especially suitable for combination sleepers, restless sleepers, seniors, and those with mobility issues, as the responsiveness from its coil unit helps users to move around on top of it.
- Iconic construction – The proprietary TEMPUR® Material gives these beds a unique edge. It creates a sleeping experience like no other with advanced pressure-relieving and motion isolating abilities, all while contouring and supporting your body.
Potential Drawbacks
- Not as cradling as other models – Although the top of this bed is quite soft, the coil unit will prevent you from sinking very deeply into it. If you’re looking for your mattress to “hug” you, you might want a different model.
- Short on cooling elements – This particular Tempur-Pedic® model doesn’t have as many cooling features as upgraded, pricier versions.
Customer Reviews of the TEMPUR-Adapt
Customers on the Tempur-Pedic website rate the TEMPUR-Adapt a 4.5 out of 5 stars. One negative aspect of the TEMPUR-Adapt mattress, as reported by some customers, is its relatively high price, while a notable pro mentioned by customers is its exceptional pressure-relieving comfort.

What is a Mattress for Adjustable Beds?
A mattress that has the ability to bend and flex when an adjustable base moves is considered a compatible mattress for an adjustable bed.
Memory foam and latex mattresses are typically a great choice because they are flexible enough to curve with the various configurations of the adjustable base while still offering support. Hybrid mattresses can also be used with an adjustable base thanks to the layers of foam that allow them to move with the shape of the base.
Although some traditional innerspring mattresses with pocketed coils may work with an adjustable base, generally, they are not flexible enough to adjust to the base.
What to Look for In A Mattress for Adjustable Beds
You have a lot of choices when it comes to finding a mattress for an adjustable bed frame. However, before buying a mattress for this purpose, check the product specifications and warranty to make sure it’s allowed.
Type of Mattress
Innerspring Mattresses
If you’re choosing an innerspring bed for your adjustable setup, look for one that has pocketed coils rather than continuous ones. This is because pocketed coils are individually wrapped to provide more targeted support for your pressure points.
You may find that an innerspring bed is cheaper initially, but if it’s not as durable, then you could end up paying the same (or more) in the long run. Also, most mattresses in this category are not designed for adjustable bed frames, so if you’re choosing this option, make sure it will be compatible.
Read Our Complete Guide: Best Innerspring Mattresses
Hybrid Mattresses
A hybrid is a blend of materials, usually coils and either latex or memory foam. Hybrid mattresses can be advantageous because you get the springy bounce of an innerspring surface with the soft contouring of foam or latex. Although they tend to be pricier, hybrids can offer more durability.
Get More Info: Best Hybrid Beds
Memory Foam Mattresses
Memory foam is a popular choice for adjustable bases because it’s flexible and excels at pressure relief. Nearly all mattresses in this category should fit an adjustable frame, but we do recommend you look for higher-density foams because they’ll be more durable. Most quality mattress brands have multiple comfort layers.
For maximum durability, look for densities of 3.5 PCF or higher for the top comfort layers, and at least 1.8 PCF for the base foam. The reason that the upper layer needs to be higher density is because it’s the portion that bears the brunt of your weight, so it’s more prone to sagging.
For More Info: Best Memory Foam Mattresses
Latex Mattresses
Latex is similar to memory foam but with a couple of minor differences. First, it tends to be a greener, more eco-friendly alternative, as long as you stick with natural latex. It’s also more durable than memory foam.
If you tend to sleep hot or like a bit of bounce, you’ll probably prefer latex. Memory foam is known for sleeping hot, while latex has a reputation for having an open-cell, breathable structure.
While latex has plenty of properties to love, it also tends to be more expensive than other types of foam.

Other Considerations When Shopping for a Mattress for Adjustable Beds
Sleeping Position
If you prefer to sleep on your side or your back, there are a large variety of mattresses that will provide comfort and stability when using an adjustable bed.
Most side sleepers will want to find mattresses that offer substantial pressure relief capabilities because of the amount of weight that is put on smaller joints like the shoulders. Back sleepers will want to ensure that the mattress offers enough support to keep their lower back and hips from sagging.
However, stomach sleepers are not likely to get the same benefits from an adjustable bed, no matter the mattress type that is used. This is because most adjustments that are available are not conducive to stomach sleeping.
Weight/Body Type of Sleepers
Heavyweight sleepers typically will need a mattress that is firmer and more supportive. This will keep them from sinking too far down into the mattress, but lighter people may want to seek out a plusher and softer mattress to provide some contouring and pressure relief. Fortunately, there are many kinds of mattresses that will work for adjustable bases so there should be plenty of suitable options for a variety of body types.
Firmness
Adjustable beds typically work best for back and side sleepers. Generally, side sleepers may find softer to medium-firm beds most comfortable, depending on their body weight, and back sleepers generally do best with medium-firm beds that can strike a good balance of support and pressure relief for the supine position.

Cooling
One way to ensure you don’t overheat at night is to get a cooling mattress. Memory foam mattresses can be a great choice to use with adjustable bases because of their flexibility, though they are prone to running hot. However, there are many memory foam models available now that use cooling technologies such as gel and copper infusions to provide a cooler, more breathable sleeping surface.
Latex mattresses are another good option for adjustable mattresses since these beds are a naturally cool material. Additionally, the coils in hybrid mattresses can provide extra airflow for hot sleepers, and many hybrids are compatible with adjustable bases.
Motion Isolation
If you sleep with a partner or a pet, keeping the motion that they make when changing positions or getting in and out of bed is important. Once you have the bed adjusted in the manner that provides the most comfort for you, you definitely don’t want someone else’s movements to disturb you. Therefore, you will want to look for a mattress that is compatible with your adjustable base and is good at preventing motion from transferring from one side to the other.
Memory foam mattresses are generally good mattresses for motion isolation, and fortunately, they also work well with adjustable bases because of their ability to bend and curve. This can also include hybrids made with pocketed coils and memory foam since pocketed coils also help curb motion transfer.
Sex
Beds that are responsive and bouncy are typically preferred by sexually active couples. This is because these types of beds provide more ease of movement so you don’t feel stuck when you are repositioning during sex.
Hybrid and latex mattresses, especially hybrids that also contain latex, can be a great option for intimacy.

Pressure Relief
If a mattress is too hard, pressure can build up because parts of your body that come into contact with a mattress don’t have enough cushioning. Conversely, if the bed is too soft and unsupportive, you may sink too far into a mattress, which can lead to pressure buildup. Therefore, finding a mattress that evenly distributes body weight is beneficial. If you’re unsure, medium-firm beds made with memory foam or latex layers are a good place to start when it comes to pressure relief.
Edge Support
Mattresses with good edge support allow users to utilize the entire bed by reinforcing the outer perimeter of the bed. This can be done by putting reinforced coils or high-density foam along the edges of the mattress. Solid edge support will keep you from feeling like you’re falling off the bed.
If you share a bed with a partner or even if you just have a tendency to scoot to the far edge of the bed, you should pay close attention to the type of edge support that is offered.
Budget
Adjustable bed frames are more expensive than their non-adjustable counterparts. However, since many mattresses are compatible with adjustable bases, you should be able to find one that fits in your budget. Although budget is always a major consideration, you will also want to factor in a mattress’ durability as well.
How Do Adjustable Mattresses Work?
An adjustable bed has a frame that can shift into different positions for both comfort and therapeutic benefits. Usually, these adjustments are made with the help of a hydraulic motor, so the frames tend to be electric.
Modern versions of this product allow for a variety of positions, including elevated head or feet, reclining, and the zero-gravity posture. This zero-gravity effect is achieved by slightly elevating both your upper and lower body, which relieves pressure and can assist people with back, neck, and hip pain.
Many adjustable bed frames also offer bonus features such as massage functions, under-bed lighting, and USB charging ports.

A Few Important Considerations Before You Buy an Adjustable Mattress
Thickness
The best mattress for this application tends to be in the range of eight to twelve inches. If you buy something thicker than that, it might not bend as well. Conversely, if it’s too thin, it might not be as durable, and it might not be as comfortable, especially if you sleep on your side.
A rule of thumb to keep in mind when it comes to shopping for adjustable bed frames is that the heavier you are, the thicker your mattress should be. There are, of course, other considerations, but this can be an important factor if you’re concerned about comfort and durability.
Warranty
We’ve said it before, and we’ll repeat it for emphasis. Before putting a mattress on an adjustable bed base, make sure that this type of usage is covered by your warranty.
Not all products are designed for this type of use. The constant bending, flexing, and adjusting can cause excess wear and tear on a product that wasn’t intended to move that way.
Size
Adjustable mattresses have slightly more variation in sizing, so if you’re buying the electric base and the mattress separately, pay close attention to the measurements to ensure a proper fit.
If you sleep with a partner, you can look into the option of getting a split Queen, King, or California King. With this arrangement, you get two mattresses that rest side by side but work independently of each other when one of you makes an adjustment.
If you like to sit up in bed to watch television, but your partner prefers to lie flat, this arrangement should hels you both get what you want. No compromising required!

Adjustable Mattress FAQs
Do adjustable beds ruin mattresses?
As long as you’re using one that’s compatible, there’s little risk of adjustable base ruining your mattress. However, you should be aware that it might wear out faster. The pressure and weight exerted on specific parts of it can cause quicker degradation.
Avoiding extreme angles and putting the mattress flat when not in use can prolong its life.
Can any mattress be used on adjustable beds?
Most mattresses can be placed on an electric base, but there are a few exceptions. The following types either can’t or shouldn’t be paired with a base that can be adjusted:
- Mattresses that have hard components built into them, including wires on the edges, hard foam panels or wood
- Many innerspring and coil mattresses (check the manufacturer’s product description)
- Beds with air chambers that will be blocked off when the base bends
- Waterbeds (haha, can you imagine?)
- Products that explicitly state in the warranty that they can’t be paired with an adjustable base
Should I pick a firm or soft mattress?
Medium firm is a solid choice. A surface that is too firm might not allow for settling into the base, especially at angles that have more curves. However, a product that is too soft is not likely to last as long.
Also, a too-soft surface might make you feel like you’re sinking in too deeply, especially when you’re at an angle like zero gravity. Softer surfaces can also cause the weight of your body to sink past the comfort layers and onto the harder surface, making for an uncomfortable sleeping experience.
Learn More: Mattress Firmness Guide
Should I buy a base with an attached mattress or one sold separately?
While it might be tempting to buy a packaged deal because the upfront cost is lower, there are some compelling reasons for purchasing your base and mattress separately.
Here’s why:
- If you’re shopping for a unit that has the bed and frame attached, you’ll find that your selection is limited. These limitations apply to both the style of your frame and the firmness options of the mattress.
- If you want to replace it, you’ll be able to do it if the two pieces are separate. If they’re attached, and your mattress wears out, you may need to buy a whole new unit.
Conclusion
With conditions like sleep apnea and insomnia on the rise, many Americans are turning to adjustable mattresses and bed frames to provide a more custom and therapeutic sleeping experience. And now that they blend in with modern décor, and the prices have come down, they can be a fantastic solution for anyone who’s looking to take their sleep to another level.
