Heavier people may think that buying a mattress is challenging due to limited models that can support a heavier body frame.
However, Saatva has worked their magic by releasing a mattress that is not just supportive for heavier people but also luxurious, made from a combination of high-quality materials. Saatva first launched in 2011 and has since then produced a number of high-end mattresses, offering craftsmanship and professional delivery.
I tested the Saatva HD and found it comfortable for stomach sleeping. However, there’s more to this mattress, so stick around as I discuss its motion isolation, support, bounce, and other preference-based features that can help you decide if it’s the right mattress for you.

My Video Review of the Saatva HD Mattress
Who I Recommend The Saatva HD For:
- Heavier people – The Saatva HD mattress was specifically designed with plus-size people in mind, meaning somewhere over 230 pounds.
- Hot sleepers – The Saatva HD should help keep you cool at night as it is a hybrid, constructed with a top layer of temperature-neutral latex and a bottom layer of breathable coils.
- Those looking for a firmer mattress – Out of 10, I gave this a 7 on the firmness scale. This makes it great for heavier people and average-weight back and stomach-sleepers. Still, this is a versatile firmness, and I think it should feel good in all sleeping positions, but mostly when on your back.
Who I Don’t Recommend The Saatva HD For:
- Light to average-weight side sleepers – One of the main concerns about this bed is adequate pressure relief for lightweight side sleepers. The pressure relief is there, but it’s not as forthcoming as softer memory foam options.
- Those looking for a classic memory foam feel– The Saatva HD is firm and not all that contouring; it has more of a ‘sleeping-on-top’ feel rather than an ‘in-the-bed’ feel. If you want to experience more sinkage, I recommend a traditional memory foam bed.
- Those looking for a budget-friendly mattress – Saatva’s HD model has a higher price point, which could be a drawback if you’re looking for a more budget-friendly mattress.
First Impressions: Firmness & Feel
Firmness Scale: 7/10
Please remember that firmness is a subjective characteristic and your shape will dictate how you experience a bed. A heavier person whose weight can more easily push through softer comfort and support layers may experience a bed as softer than a lightweight person. The way you are shaped could also play a role here. Consider your weight, shape, and size when evaluating firmness scores.
I like how the Euro top strikes the balance of soft with the hint of support below. The foams in this support the body and have a quick response, so you don’t feel stuck or swallowed by the mattress. Although this bed is on the firmer side, the exact feel you’d get depends on your body frame and weight.
I rated this mattress as 7 out of 10 on our firmness scale, which is on the firm side. However, people over 230-300 pounds may not find it as firm as I did, especially since I’m an average-weight sleeper. That’s why I always say that firmness is a subjective characteristic.
How Does It Feel?
Testing this mattress, I noticed it feels bouncy like a traditional innerspring mattress because of its innerspring coils and a top layer of latex (a buoyant and breathable material).
I felt like I was floating atop while still getting a slightly cushioned feeling with the Euro top, adding that it’s similar to a swanky hotel mattress. Although people over 230 pounds may find it to be softer, they should still get adequate support in various positions.
What I Like About the Saatva HD
- Fully supportive – The mattress feels just as supportive in the center (no caving in the middle) as it does on the edges. Reinforced foam at the edges helped me feel like I won’t roll off the edge, although the Euro pillow top and latex layers lessen that edge support when weight is applied.
- Cooling materials – The mattress is designed to be breathable, both with its innerspring coils that allow air to pass through the construction. This bed is made for cooling and breathability, so I think it should be a good match for hot sleepers.
- It’s durable – I think this bed is sturdy for sure. With its quality construction, the Saatva HD is a mattress that should last you a long time. Plus, it comes with a lifetime warranty, attesting to its durability and the brand’s confidence in the quality of their product.
My Saatva HD Complaints
- Not much contouring – This bed isn’t the best for those looking for pressure relief or contouring, say, for achy joints or side sleeping. If that’s what you’re looking for, you might do better with a memory foam or softer mattress.
- Poor motion isolation– Unfortunately, because this is a bouncy bed, it won’t isolate motion well. The tests I performed showed quite a bit of motion transfer, especially when switching positions.
- It’s taller than you think – The mattress itself is taller than most mattresses, coming in at 15.5 inches tall. This means, depending on your bed frame, this thicker mattress might look too tall.
Testing Saatva HD Mattress: How it Performed
When I tested the Saatva HD Mattress, there were specific features I was looking out for to come away with a solid idea of who this mattress was best suited for. These include cooling, motion isolation, bounce, and edge support. Additionally, I always lie on the mattress in different sleeping positions to see how the bed performs in terms of support and pressure relief in each position.

Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types
According to the Saatva brand, their Saatva HD bed is designed to comfortably support up to 500 pounds per side, which means it should also be good for heavier couples. Although the Saatva HD can support this much weight, this doesn’t necessarily mean it will be a good fit for you just because you are a heavier sleeper. You will also need to consider the bed’s other features as well as your go-to sleep position to ensure it’s the best match.
Weight | Side Sleepers | Back Sleepers | Stomach Sleepers |
---|---|---|---|
Lightweight Sleepers (-130 lbs) | ☆☆☆ | ★★☆ | ★☆☆ |
Average-Weight Sleepers (130-230 lbs) | ★☆☆ | ★★☆ | ★★☆ |
Heavyweight Sleepers (+230 lbs) | ★★☆ | ★★★ | ★★★ |
Side Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Those under 130 pounds who sleep on their sides will probably find this mattress way too firm. As I said, the bed may not offer enough sinkage for adequate pressure relief in this position.
- Average Weight Sleepers – Average-weight side sleepers should experience more pressure relief and cushioning around the hips and shoulder. However, some may still find it too firm.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – People who weigh over 230 pounds should be more comfortable sleeping on their side on this mattress, receiving good support, though still, not a whole lot of cushioning on the shoulder.
Back Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight testers on set loved the HD by Saatva. They say that the pillow top allows enough cushioning even for those under 130 pounds.
- Average Weight Sleepers – As an average-weight sleeper myself, I experienced even weight distribution and generous cushioning from this bed.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavier back sleepers will appreciate the Saatva HD’s additional lumbar support and should find that their hips sink in comfortably with the added latex comfort layer.
Stomach Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Although you should feel nicely supported with your spine aligned, you may find this bed to be too firm to provide pressure relief around the hips.
- Average Weight Sleepers – Some sleepers may experience a slight dip in the hip area. Although this shouldn’t be an issue, I think it may be a cause of concern for people with back pain.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavyweight stomach sleepers will feel a comfortable level of support underneath their hips throughout the night on this firmer, more supportive mattress.
Pressure Relief & Pain
4/5
Although this bed is made for heavier sleepers, even lighter people should find it comfortable in certain positions. If you’re around 150 pounds or more, I think you should thrive in either reposition as the mattress does a good job of padding around hips and shoulders. Those under 130 pounds may still prefer a softer bed.
For those who are heavier, though, this mattress should provide good pressure and pain relief, especially when sleeping on your back or stomach.
Is the Saatva HD Mattress Good for Pain Relief?
As I said, the heavier you are, the more pressure and pain relief you will receive from this mattress; conversely, the lighter you are, the more pressure and pain it might cause you.
Back Pain – For heavier people, I think this mattress could be helpful for back pain. Your weight should feel evenly distributed across the mattress, with the top layers of foam filling in the lumbar region of your spine comfortably. The HD is also a bouncy bed, so you should be able to move around easily, avoiding exacerbating your back pain.

Hip Pain – Back and stomach sleepers with hip pain should find a lot of pressure and pain relief from this bed. However, if you’re a side sleeper with hip pain, you might want to find a softer mattress, especially if you’re around 110 pounds.
Shoulder Pain – Again, if you’re a heavier back or stomach sleeper, this mattress should be helpful for shoulder pain. If you sleep on your side, though, the Saatva HD’s firmer feel might be too much and could exacerbate shoulder pain, even in people who carry more weight.

Support
4/5
I think the Saatva HD is top-notch when it comes to supporting heavier-weight people. This is due to its construction, which includes a combination of latex, polyfoam, memory foam, and sturdy steel coils.
Spencer, who also tested this bed with me, said he has bad sleep posture, and the HD makes his lumbar feel “lifted.” I, too, also felt nicely supported.
This bed contains patented spinal support technology designed to help relieve pressure on joints and support the lumbar spine. While this might be too much for lighter-weight sleepers, for heavier sleepers, it’s just right.
Motion Transfer
2/5
I always test mattresses to evaluate how well they isolate motion, as this can help couples decide whether a certain model is a good fit for their needs. Unfortunately, because of this mattress’s latex and innerspring components, both of which are rather bouncy, the Saatva HD is not the best for preventing motion transfer. If you’re a light sleeper and usually sleep next to someone, you’re likely to feel each other switching positions.
Temperature Regulation / Cooling
3/5
I’m a hot sleeper, and I always worry about how the mattress will manage to regulate temperature once you put sheets on it. As I tested the bed, I noticed the cover felt nice but wasn’t necessarily cooling. Additionally, I also noticed a hint of heat buildup after lying on the Saatva HD for a while.
Learn More: Best Cooling Mattresses
Bounce
4/5
As I said, the latex in this bed has a “spongy texture,” but it’s pretty firm. This means that rolling around should be easy as the response time is almost instantaneous. The bounce is always useful for sexually-active couples, but it also comes in handy for those with mobility issues.
If you need some help switching positions and getting in and out of bed, I think the Saatva HD is bouncy enough so that you don’t feel stuck.
Edge Support
3/5
This bed has a reinforced perimeter, so you’re unlikely to feel like you’re rolling off the edge. However, you may notice more squishing when you sleep near the edge due to the Euro pillow top and latex layers. I noticed I was slipping more when sitting near the edge than when I was lying in this area. For this reason, it may not be the best choice for those who like sitting near the perimeter.
Read more about mattress edge support here.
Performance for Couples
4/5
The Saatva HD has some positives and negatives for couples looking for a mattress. One upside I liked is that this mattress has great support over its entire surface, including around the edges and in the middle. This means that you and your partner shouldn’t slowly roll into one another in the middle of the bed over time, nor should you feel you’ll fall off the edge of a weak edge.
The HD is also quite bouncy, which some sexually-active couples may prefer. However, that bounciness means that if you’re a light sleeper, you’ll probably be able to feel your partner moving at night.

Saatva offers free white-glove delivery and setup. The company will bring the mattress to you, place it on its foundation for you, and even remove your old mattress– all included in the price.
Lifetime Warranty
Like other Saatva products, this mattress comes with a lifetime warranty. This means that Saatva warrants your HD will be free from defects in workmanship and materials for as long as you, the original purchaser, own the mattress.
High Bounce
People who change positions a lot or struggle with mobility typically prefer beds with a bit of “push back” or bounce that assists movement. Sexually active couples also benefit from this feature.
Construction: What’s Inside Saatva HD?
The Saatva HD mattress stands 15.5 inches tall, no matter if you’re going for a Twin, Queen, or California King. The mattress has a 3-inch Euro pillow top layer made from hypoallergenic cotton, plus an organic cotton cover.
- The zoned support layer is made from bouncy Talalay latex sitting right under the Euro top. This layer has zoned support, so it’s firmer in the lumbar area and softer near the head and shoulders. Additionally, latex is naturally cooling, so this layer should help dissipate any heat.
- The comfort layer made from memory foam comes next. This material has a slower response time, so it should contour slowly as you sink into the mattress. Because this foam is underneath the latex layer, you shouldn’t sink too far into the mattress.
- The poly foam transition layer comes next. This layer is firm and serves to prevent too much sinking. On top of that, it’s meant to provide a smooth transition from softer memory foam to steel coils.
- The support layer is the last layer, featuring sturdy steel coils. These coils are designed to support sleepers of all sizes and weights and are meant to last a long time being that they’re very durable.
- The edges of the mattress are reinforced with high-density foam, which means they shouldn’t sink as much. Although I noticed some compression, the edges still hold up better than they would without the reinforcement.
Unboxing & Off-Gassing
Included in the price of the Saatva HD is what is called “white glove delivery.” This means Saatva will deliver and set up the bed for you without any additional charge or effort on your part. They’ll also take away your old mattress and any wrappings or trash, leaving everything clean and ready for you to enjoy your new mattress.
The upside to the Saatva HD is that it isn’t delivered compressed in a box, which means you shouldn’t experience off-gassing (or that new mattress smell) with this bed.
Certifications
- CertiPUR-US® certified: The foams in this bed are CertiPUR-US® certified. CertiPUR-US® is a third-party program that ensures the foams meet rigorous health and safety standards. - Certified Natural Materials – The cotton in the cover is GOTS-certified, which means the cotton meets the international third-party standard to be certified organic. The mattress’ second layer and tufting yarn are made from GOTS-certified wool. The latex is certified by GOLS.
- Guardian™ treatment – Each Saatva HD mattress is treated with this patented, nontoxic, botanical antimicrobial treatment, designed to inhibit the growth of bacteria, mold, and mildew.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Saatva HD mattress sag?
The Saatva HD is designed to support more weight than most mattresses, and it’s reinforced along its edges and in the middle, which makes it highly unlikely to sag. Overall, I consider this mattress to be very durable and high-quality.
How much does the Saatva HD weigh?
The weight of this mattress varies depending on what size you’re getting.
Twin – 80 pounds
Twin XL – 85 pounds
Full – 110 pounds
Queen – 135 pounds
King, California King, and Split King – 169 pounds
Is the Saatva HD mattress too firm?
No, I don’t think the Saatva HD is not too firm for those who weigh more and need more support. It might not even feel too firm for some people who are average in weight (between 130 – 230 pounds), specifically those who sleep on their stomachs or average-weight back sleepers who prefer a firm mattress.
For side sleepers or lightweight people, though, this mattress will probably feel too firm, but this depends on each sleeper’s preferences.
Is the Saatva HD bouncy?
Thanks to the supportive layer of innerspring coils and the layer of Talalay latex, this mattress has a good amount of bounce to it. This makes it ideal for getting up off the mattress, changing positions, or easily moving around for whatever reason.

My Verdict
I feel the Saatva HD could be a great mattress for sleepers of any position who weigh more than 230 pounds, and it has been expertly designed with enhanced lumbar support, edge support, and some of the highest-quality, eco-friendly materials to prevent sagging.
I also feel Saatva’s HD bed is great for those who sleep hot and for those who want a firm-feeling mattress. Keep in mind, though, that heavier people will feel this mattress is more of a “medium firm,” whereas average-weight people will feel it is “firm,” and light-weight people will feel it is “very firm.”
This mattress will be the least beneficial for those who are lightweight or average-weight side sleepers. My final score for the Saatva HD is 3.3 out of 5.
