Who We Recommend The Plank Firm For:

  • Firmness lovers – Firm sleeping surfaces typically offer enhanced support, which can be appealing to those who prefer a sturdier feel. This mattress delivers by using high-density memory foam for a supportive, yet comfortable finish.

  • Those who want options – You may know you want a harder mattress, but what degree of firmness works best? The Plank Firm bed gives you two different feels, so you can choose between Firm and Extra-Firm.

  • Hot sleepers – The enhanced firmness helps you sleep more on top of the mattress surface as opposed to cradled in. This should allow for better airflow, while the breathable foams should keep heat under control.

Who We Don’t Recommend The Plank Firm For:

  • People with pressure build-up – Seven inches of high-density memory foam work in tandem with two inches of Brooklyn Bedding’s TitanFlex™ comfort foam to cradle your joints and maintain spine alignment. However, those with excess pressure build-up may want a mattress that offers more sinkage.

  • Lightweight side sleepers – Side sleepers who weigh under 130 may find this mattress too firm. Both sides are on the firmer side, so lightweight side sleepers may not weigh enough to activate the upper layers.

  • Those who prefer a softer mattress – The Plank Firm mattress is on the firmer side, hence the name. Both sides have a firm feel, so this mattress isn’t the best choice for those looking for a soft mattress.

First Impressions: Firmness & Feel

Firmness Scale: 7.5-8/10 (Firm side) 9/10 (Ultra-Firm side)

Please remember that firmness is a subjective characteristic and your shape will dictate how you experience a bed. A heavier person whose weight can more easily push through softer comfort and support layers may experience a bed as softer than a lightweight person. The way you are shaped could also play a role here. Consider your weight, shape, and size when evaluating firmness scores.

We rate mattress firmness on a scale of 1 to 10, with one being super soft and 10 extra firm. Although the Plank Firm is a dual-sided mattress, both sides have a firm feel. We rated the firm side of this mattress a 7.5-8 out of 10 and the other side a 9 out of 10, which means it feels extra firm or what Brooklyn Bedding calls ultra-firm.

The firm side is excellent for most back sleepers, including some stomach sleepers depending on their weight. The ultra-firm side is more suitable for heavyweight back and stomach sleepers.

How Does It Feel?

Lying on the firm side, you should notice how the quilted top layer contours to your body while the support foam underneath maintains spine alignment.

The ultra-firm side offers minimal cradling, so you should feel more like you’re sleeping “on” the mattress instead of “in” it. This side feels sturdier overall and is more suitable for stomach sleepers and heavy people.

What We Like About The Plank Firm

  • Two firmness options in one – This mattress offers an incredible value with its dual-sided design. One side is firm, while the other is ultra-firm, so you can decide which fits you best based on your needs and preferences.

  • Edge support – Although this is an all-foam mattress, it offers excellent edge support. The high–density, firm foam results in a sturdy perimeter that shouldn’t collapse if you sit or sleep near the edges.

  • Minimalist design – According to Brooklyn Bedding, the Plank mattress is an ode to the minimalist approach to sleep in some parts of Asia. This is why the mattress is firmer, has a flat surface, and isn’t too tall.

Our The Plank Firm Complaints

  • The cooling top panel is an additional charge – The company offers the option to have a special cooling top panel sewn into each side. However, this does come at an additional charge of 100 dollars. Extra hot sleepers will likely find this a good investment, though.

  • There is no soft version – The Plank Firm is made specifically for heavy people and those who prefer a firmer sleeping surface. For this reason, there is no softer version of this bed, which means side sleepers and lightweight people may want to explore softer options like the Brooklyn Aurora Luxe.

Testing The Plank Firm: How it Performed

Testing the Plank Firm mattress gave us an insight into how the bed performs in various sleeping positions. This way, we were also able to tell which group of people the mattress best fits based on their body weight. In addition, we also measured the Plank Firm’s performance in key categories such as pressure relief, motion isolation, cooling, and other preference-based features.

Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types

The Plank Firm mattress can support up to 950 pounds, which makes it a great option for heavy people and couples. This means the bed can handle around 475 pounds per side, but make sure to pair it with a high-quality, durable foundation that’s designed to support this much weight. It’s also important to remember that you may experience slight differences in how the bed feels based on your weight.

Back Sleepers

Stomach Sleepers

Lightweight Sleepers (-130 lbs)☆☆☆★★☆★★☆
Average-Weight Sleepers (130-230 lbs)★☆☆★★★★★★
Heavyweight Sleepers (+230 lbs)★☆☆★★★★★★

Side Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Side sleepers under 130 pounds may struggle to activate the upper layers. You may not get enough sinkage and pressure relief in this position.
  • Average-weight Sleepers – Average-weight people sleeping on their side may find this bed too firm. However, because those closer to 230 pounds sink into the bed more, they should get adequate pressure relief in this position.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavy side sleepers should sink more, which means they’ll get better pressure relief but only on the firm side. The ultra-firm side may still be too firm for this position regardless of body weight.

Back Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight back sleepers may want to use the firm side. This way, they should get the support they need but also a bit more cradling for pressure relief in the lower back area.
  • Average-weight Sleepers – Average-weight back sleepers can try both sides of the Plank mattress, depending on their exact weight and preference. Those closer to 230 pounds should get more relief from either side, while still enjoying neutral spine alignment.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavy back sleepers should also enjoy both sides depending on the feel they prefer. Those who want more support should opt for the ultra-firm side, as it supports healthy spine alignment with minimal sinkage.

Stomach Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight stomach sleepers should enjoy the firm side as the ultra-firm is likely too firm to cushion their frame. They should feel like they’re sleeping “on” the mattress more than “in” it, which is what most stomach sleepers prefer for optimal support.
  • Average-weight Sleepers – Average-weight stomach sleepers who weigh closer to 230 pounds should use the ultra-firm side as it offers more support and less sinkage. However, those closer to 150 pounds should stick to the firm side of the Plank mattress.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavy stomach sleepers should like how the firm side keeps their hips from sinking too far into the upper layers. The TitanFlex™ foam also offers great support in the lumbar area and shoulders.

Pressure Relief & Pain

The Plank Firm mattress was engineered to provide people a firm sleeping experience. By providing support for the spine, a firm bed may alleviate excess pressure on the shoulders, neck, and hips, promote good posture, and minimize the risk of developing chronic pain.

However, some people, specifically side sleepers and those who weigh under 130 pounds, may find it too firm to relieve pressure in certain areas.

Back Pain – People with back pain should like the amount of support the Plank mattress offers. The bed uses high-density foam to keep the hips and shoulders from sinking, which is crucial when it comes to relieving and preventing back pain.

Hip Pain – Sleepers who deal with hip pain should avoid sleeping on their side, especially since the Plank mattress is a firm bed. If you have hip pain, it’s best to sleep on your back since you can get the best support level and pressure relief in this position.

Shoulder Pain – Shoulder pain is another common issue side sleepers may experience. The Plank mattress doesn’t allow much sinkage, even in the side sleeping position, so you may want to consider sleeping on your back or checking out a softer mattress.

Support

By offering two distinct levels of firmness that are both on the firmer side, the Plank Firm really shines in the support department.

Firm mattresses can be a lifesaver for sleepers with upper or lower back pain. On the flip side, softer surfaces can exacerbate pain by allowing the body to sink in too deeply, increasing pressure on the joints.

The Plank Firm was engineered to keep the spine properly aligned, especially for stomach and back sleepers. Proper support for the lower spine allows you to take deeper breaths during sleep and increases overall oxygenation to the tissues and brain. The result is deeper sleep, which helps you wake feeling energized and refreshed.

Motion Transfer

The Plank Firm mattress is made entirely out of foam, which helps it excel at isolating motion. This makes the Plank mattress an excellent option for couples and anyone else who may share their mattress. Light sleepers who bunk with more restless sleepers should also sleep well on this mattress, since they’re unlikely to be disturbed by tossing and turning.

Temperature Regulation / Cooling

The Plank mattress is an all-foam bed made from high-density foams, so you would think overheating would be an issue. Luckily, the mattress has a quilted top on both sides and features open-cell technology throughout the layers, which helps promote airflow.

In addition, Brooklyn Bedding offers an optional cooling top for an additional price of 100 dollars. The GlacioTex cooling top is excellent for hot sleepers looking for a cooling mattress that keeps them comfortable throughout the night.

Performance for Couples

Partners who sleep on their backs and stomachs should like either side of the Plank mattress. In addition, the bed offers a bit more bounce than the average all-foam bed due to its firmer feel. Throw in its excellent motion isolation and cooling features, and the Plank Firm should fit most couples looking for a firm mattress. However, if one partner is lightweight or prefers sleeping on their side, you may want to choose a softer mattress.

Preference-based Features

Multiple Firmness Options

Firm or firmer? By offering this flippable design, Brooklyn Bedding gives you the freedom to explore just how sturdy you like your bed to be. You can test it out for a week or two on the ultra-firm side, then flip it over if you feel like you need a bit more cradling.

Bed-in-a-Box

The Plank Firm ships directly to your door, rolled and compressed in a box via contactless delivery. This allows you to set the mattress up when it’s convenient for you (although the company recommends unboxing within the first three weeks to reduce the risk of slow expansion time).

Motion Isolation

The Plank isolates motion at its source and prevents it from moving across the bed to a sleeping partner. If you share your mattress and worry about being shaken awake, this is a great choice to help you avoid that.

Cooling

Most adults find a temperature of 60 to 72 degrees ideal for sleeping. If you’re tired of waking up hot, an optional cooling panel is available for both sides. This panel uses phase-change technology to stop the heat in its tracks.

Exceptional Edge Support

Regarding its exceptional edge support, there is some slight compression when you are seated on the side, but you should be able to lie on the side normally without feeling unstable or as if you’re about to roll off. This may not be your number one concern, but those who share their mattress can increase their available sleep space with strong edges.

Adjustable Base Compatible

You can use the Plank on a variety of foundations, including slats or platforms, and even an adjustable base if you’d prefer. The brand manufactures its own line of foundations and adjustable bases if you wish to simplify your shopping experience further.

Construction: What’s Inside the Plank Firm Mattress??

The Plank Firm is a dual-sided mattress that offers two distinct feels for sleepers seeking a firm bedding option. The firm side features a 1.5-inch quilted cover, and if you flip the bed to the ultra-firm side, you’ll find a .75-inch quilted top. Both tops are quilted to provide added comfort and a bit of cradling for pressure relief in the most sensitive areas.

The cover is made out of cotton and is soft to the touch. In addition, it’s also securely quilted with continuous stitching to avoid unwanted loft. For an extra charge, you can add a cooling cover that uses phase-change technology to help regulate the surface temperature.

Between the covers, there are two foam layers within the mattress, measuring at 11.25 inches in total. You can flip the mattress over for a firmer experience, but this description will focus on the construction with the firm side up.

  • Below the pillow top is 2 inches of the company’s patented TitanFlex™ comfort foam. This high-density foam layer is incredibly firm, offering deep compression support as you lie on the bed.
  • The second foam layer is 7 inches thick. This dense foam base serves as the bed’s primary source of durability and stability.
  • The bottom is an additional .75-inch quilted pillow top, which can be flipped and used as the surface of the mattress when you decide you want a firmer feel.

Unboxing & Off-Gassing

The Plank Firm bed arrives at your door rolled up and bundled into a box, which makes it simple to carry to your room and install.

After unrolling, wait 3 to 5 hours to test your new bed out (although it may take 24 hours to regain its full shape). You can use different bed foundations or even an adjustable base if you want.
Since it’s shipped in a box, you may notice some off-gassing upon unrolling the mattress. Although the odors may be too strong for sensitive people, any off-gassing should dissipate by the time the mattress decompresses. If you still notice some odor, give it another 24 hours to vent.

Certifications

  • Eco-Friendly Certifications – The foams in this bed are CertiPUR-US® certified. CertiPUR-US® is a third-party program that ensures the foams meet rigorous health and safety standards. This means they don’t contain harmful substances like ozone depleters, PBDEs, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and phthalates. They should also have low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.

Coupons, Trials, Warranties, and Shipping

  • Shipping – Shipping is free within the United States. Alaska, Hawaii, and Canada can also receive shipments for an additional fee.
  • Trial – Try the Plank Firm for 120 days, and if it’s not a good fit, contact the company within your trial period to arrange a free return and a full refund.
  • Warranty – The warranty on this product stays in place for 10 years.
  • Return Policy – You can return the Plank before the trial is up. However, you also have to keep it for at least 30 days, which is typically how long it takes to adapt to a new mattress. Returns are free, but any shipping fees are non-refundable.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Plank Firm Mattress Made From?

The Plank is made from a combination of high-density foam and memory foam. The construction has a pillow top on both sides, so you get maximum comfort on either side. While the foams don’t offer much bounce, they excel at isolating motion.

How Soon Can I Sleep on My Plank Firm Mattress?

You can sleep on the mattress after a few hours, but keep in mind that it may take up to 24 hours for the Plank Firm to fully decompress. This means you may not experience its full comfort and performance until the bed reaches its full size.

Is the Plank Firm Mattress a Bed in a Box?

The Plank Firm mattress is a bed-in-a-box, which means it’s delivered to your door compressed, rolled, and packed in a box. Although the box can be heavy depending on the size you order, it’s not as bulky, so it’s easier to move from your doorstep to the bedroom.

Overall Summary

Those in the market for a firm bed should enjoy the Plank Firm’s dual-sided design. Sleepers should expect excellent spine alignment and motion isolation no matter which side they choose due to this bed’s all-foam construction and ultra-supportive feel.

Side Sleepers

3/5

Side sleepers usually require extra pressure relief because more of their weight is concentrated on a narrower and curvier expanse of their body. While some heavier and average side sleepers may feel okay, the majority are likely to find this bed too firm. If you prefer something softer, consider Brooklyn’s Bloom Hybrid.

Back Sleepers

4/5

Most back sleepers who prefer a firmer mattress should appreciate how one side can conform to their lumbar and hold their body in a well-supported cradle. If you’re a back sleeper who prefers less cradling, flip it over for a more supportive experience.

Stomach Sleepers

5/5

Stomach sleepers should appreciate how sturdy this mattress is. The additional support should keep their hips level with the rest of their body so that their spine stays aligned. Those with extra weight in their middle may even prefer the Ultra Firm for its enhanced support.

Combination Sleepers

3/5

There is some bounce to this brand, and the foams are quick to respond to pressure, so combo sleepers shouldn’t have any problem alternating between positions throughout the night. However, if you frequently end up on your side, you may find pressure points lead to more waking up overnight.

Couples

4/5

The Plank Firm could be a good fit for heavier couples or pairs who both sleep on their backs or stomachs. With good motion isolation, optional cooling, and a slight bounce, this should cater to certain couple’s needs. However, if one partner prefers softer beds or is a side sleeper, this mattress likely won’t be the best fit.

Heavy Sleepers

5/5

The manufacturer recommends a weight limit of 950 pounds for this mattress. By offering exceptional support, this mattress should be ideal for heavier sleepers in all sleeping positions. The firm support helps promote neutral spine alignment, preventing that bottoming out experience softer beds can sometimes cause.

Lightweight Sleepers

3/5

Most individuals weighing less than 130 pounds prefer softer surfaces that allow for body-conforming and pressure relief. Unfortunately, the Plank Firm is likely too firm for most lighter folks. If you’re on the slender side, the brand recommends the Brooklyn Signature for a soft, cradling experience.

Average Weight Sleepers

4/5

Average-weight sleepers should like this mattress, but this may depend on their exact weight and preferred sleeping position. Back and stomach sleepers, particularly those closer to 230 pounds, should like the firm and ultra-firm feel, while those sleeping on their side may prefer a softer mattress altogether.

Overall Value

4/5

The Plank Firm is a dual-sided mattress that lets you choose how firm you’d like your bed to be. The Plank’s breathable foams should keep you from sleeping too hot, and the quilted cover on each side should gently cradle your pressure points without making you feel lost in the foam. Back and stomach sleepers, in particular, should enjoy this mattress.

Our Verdict

If you’re looking for a firm mattress that gives you options, you may want to consider giving the Plank Firm by Brooklyn Bedding a shot. We like that Sleepers have the choice between a firm and ultra-firm side, depending on the exact feel they’re looking for.

Its exceptional performance in the support and motion isolation categories make it a great choice for heavyweight sleepers, couples, and those who rest on their back and stomach. However, lightweight to average-weight sleepers – specifically those who rest on their side – may prefer a softer bed.
