Allswell Mattress Review for 2024

Last Updated on November 9, 2023

Written by Rachael Gilpin

Allswell is making a name for itself in the budget mattress game with their hybrid mattress, offering comfort and support at an attractive price. Ringing in at less than 500 dollars for a Queen model, Allswell gives other brands a run for their money and contributes some stiff competition with its individually wrapped coils and graphite and copper-infused memory foam.

If you’re searching for an excellent bed without breaking the bank, this is a favorite of Sleep Advisor’s in the budget choice category. In addition to comfort, this mattress offers quality edge support and innovative cooling capabilities to keep you comfortable.

Who We Recommend The Allswell For:

  • Stomach sleepers – The individually wrapped coils should provide excellent support for stomach sleepers who typically require a firmer mattress.

  • Hot sleepers – The Allswell offers plenty of cooling. First, the brand’s charcoal and copper gel-infused memory foam absorbs your body’s heat. Second, the coils help foster additional airflow throughout the center of the bed, helping keep the mattress cool.

  • Couples – The edge support for the price is outstanding. When shifting to the very end on either side, the reinforced edges should offer a comfortable, supportive surface end-to-end without compromising space due to sagging, making it an excellent choice for couples.

Who We Don’t Recommend The Allswell For:

  • People who prefer softer beds – Comfort is relative, and some individuals enjoy a soft mattress; this could be due to back pain or body aches that require significant pressure relief. Side sleepers may experience pressure near the hips and shoulders due to the mattress’s firmly supportive nature.

  • Shoppers who require transparency – Allswell is a brand owned by Walmart, and it’s difficult to find information about where and how the mattresses are made. The Allswell website states that the brand works with artisans and suppliers from all over the world, failing to provide precise information. For sleepers who want to know their bed is made in the United States, we recommend checking out the Signature Hybrid from Brooklyn Bedding, which is available in a firmer feel like the Allswell.

First Impressions: Firmness & Feel

Firmness Scale: 7/10 (Slightly Firm)

Please remember that firmness is a subjective characteristic and your shape will dictate how you experience a bed. A heavier person whose weight can more easily push through softer comfort and support layers may experience a bed as softer than a lightweight person. The way you are shaped could also play a role here. Consider your weight, shape, and size when evaluating firmness scores.

Mattress firmness reflects how soft or firm a bed feels when you’re lying on it, rather than how well it keeps your spine in neutral alignment, which reflects overall support. Though they are closely related, a firm bed doesn’t always guarantee good support.

Our Sleep Advisor mattress firmness scale ranges from 1-10, with 10 being the absolute firmest feel. This Allswell bed is on the firmer side, with a rating of 7 out of 10. This makes it a slightly firm mattress, so it should be a good fit for sleepers who prefer firmer lifting rather than softer cushioning.

How Does It Feel?

The bed arrives at your home compressed into a box. After unboxing, it should expand to its full height within 48 hours, and the A insignia should be at the foot of your bed.

Upon laying down, you’ll sink into the cushy top layer, which should fill the space in your lower back, alleviate tension, align your spine, and provide support. The individually-wrapped coils should give most sleepers a buoyant lift, preventing you from sinking uncomfortably and offering excellent bounce, comfort, and motion isolation.

What We Like About the Allswell

  • The price – A Queen Allswell bed will cost you less than 500 dollars. This is a very budget-friendly price for a hybrid mattress.
  • The bounce – Since it has a layer of coils, the Allswell bed has a good amount of bounce. This can be preferable for combination sleepers and some sexually-active couples.
  • Add-ons are easy – Allswell makes it easy to add on items like pillows or a memory foam mattress topper at check-out.

Our Allswell Complaints

  • It won’t work for all body types – Sleepers under 130 pounds or those over 230 pounds might find the Allswell either too firm or not supportive enough, respectively. We think it will work best for average-weight sleepers.
  • Not much pressure relief – Even though there is a top layer of memory foam on the Allswell, it may not be enough for those with joint pain who need extra cushioning.
  • Not compatible with all sleep positions – This bed will work best for back and stomach sleepers, and it will likely be too firm for those who sleep on their sides.

Testing the Allswell Mattress: How it Performed

In order to determine who the Allswell mattress is best suited for, we put it through a variety of tests. First, we lied on the bed in different sleeping positions to see how it worked for each, and then we tested its performance with bounce, repositioning, motion isolation, cooling, and more. We also paid attention to this bed’s edge support and off-gassing, since those are factors for many beds-in-a-box like this one.

Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types

According to Allswell, the weight capacity of this bed is 500 pounds or 250 pounds per side of the mattress. That said, this doesn’t necessarily mean the Allswell is the best mattress for heavyweight people. As you’ll see below, it’s important to consider both your body type and go-to sleep position when buying a mattress, and the Allswell works better for some than others.

Side Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – The Allswell will likely feel particularly firm and uncomfortable for side sleepers. It won’t provide enough pressure relief for the shoulder and hip.
  • Average-Weight Sleepers – Average-weight side sleepers will push down into the comfort layers more and receive a bit more pressure relief than lightweight sleepers. Again, though, they’ll likely want a softer mattress.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavyweight side sleepers will likely push down through the top comfort layer of this bed into the firm, supportive coils below. This will create pressure on the hip and shoulder.

Back Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight back sleepers who love a firm mattress should feel supported and comfortable on the Allswell.
  • Average-Weight Sleepers – Average-weight back sleepers should sink in just enough to feel both some pressure relief and support on this bed. Their hips should dip down enough into the memory foam for good, neutral spinal alignment.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavyweight back sleepers should feel comfortable and supported on the Allswell. Their weight should be evenly distributed in this position, providing good pressure relief as well.

Stomach Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight stomach sleepers should love the Allswell’s firmness and support.
  • Average-Weight Sleepers – Average-weight stomach sleepers should also benefit from this firm mattress. Their hips should not dip down into the bed, which can be an issue for stomach sleepers on a too-soft mattress.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Those who weigh over 230 pounds will likely want a mattress that is more substantial and supportive for stomach sleeping; perhaps one with extra support beneath the hips.

Pressure Relief & Pain

Allswell’s approach to pressure relief lies primarily in the 2 inches of gel memory foam. This highly responsive material offers bounce and a quick response, keeping the sleeper more on top of the mattress rather than wrapped up in it. Due to the buoyant nature of the foam, the bed is an excellent product for stomach, back, and combination sleepers, who often need a mattress that allows them to shift position more easily.

Back Pain – This Allswell bed should work well for those with back pain – especially for stomach sleepers. This firm mattress should prevent the hips from dipping too much in this position, which can be a major cause of lower back pain for some sleepers.

Hip Pain – This firm mattress is a great solution for sleepers with hip pain due to stomach sleeping. However, it won’t be a good fit for those with hip pain who sleep on their sides, as it will be too firm and add extra pressure on the hip.

Shoulder Pain – The Allswell will probably be too firm for most sleepers with shoulder pain. Mattresses that are softer, at least beneath the shoulders, tend to be a better fit for both back and side sleepers with shoulder pain.

Support

One of the best methods to keep back and neck pain at bay is to ensure your bed provides optimum support for good spinal alignment.

The support system of the Allswell consists of an 8-inch thick layer of individually-wrapped coils, which offers excellent motion isolation and comfortable support.

The thicker coils along the sides aid in superb edge support to maximize space without the feeling like you’re rolling off. This feature can make a considerable difference if you use your bed as a place to sit or share the bed with a partner because if the edge support is poor, you both might be crowding toward the middle.

Motion Transfer

Motion transfer describes how much you’ll be able to feel somebody moving on a different part of the bed. This is something to consider if you’re sharing your bed, especially if you are a light sleeper.

In general, memory foam tends to be great at isolating motion. In the Allswell bed, this foam does help minimize the motion you’ll feel when your partner shifts positions. However, since it also contains coils, you’ll likely be able to feel your partner get up and out of bed.

In short, it does have some motion transfer, but the memory foam helps curb it.

Temperature Regulation / Cooling

Waking up feeling overheated and sweaty is an uncomfortable experience. Luckily, the Allswell mattress is a great cooling mattress for those who tend to sleep hot. It does this by infusing graphite (charcoal) and copper into the memory foam layer, which are naturally cooling materials.

It also includes coils, which allow air to pass through the mattress, making the entire bed more breathable.

Performance for Couples

Usually, couples sharing a mattress are after several features: motion isolation, edge support, cooling, and a bit of bounce.

The Allswell mattress ticks all of these boxes, making it an excellent fit for couples. Using individually-wrapped coils and memory foam allows it to isolate motion well. The bed had multiple cooling features so you and your partner shouldn’t overheat. The bed has reinforced edges so you’ll both be able to use the entire surface of the bed, and it even has a good amount of bounce, which can be preferable for some sexually-active couples.

However, the firmer feel means it won’t be as adaptable as a medium-firm option, so if either you or your partner is a side sleeper, this probably wouldn’t work.

Preference-based Features

Optional White Glove Delivery

Allswell offers optional white glove delivery in the contiguous U.S. for an additional charge. However, this service has been suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic, so we recommend double-checking with the company to see if they have resumed this service. Expedited delivery options are available for an extra cost.

Bed-in-a-box

If you don’t elect to have your bed set up with white glove delivery, it will arrive at your doorstep, compressed neatly in a box. Shipping is free and setup is simple.

Exceptional Edge Support

By using thicker coils around the perimeter, the edge support on the Allswell is exceptional. Firmer edges help couples to maximize surface space and avoid the sensation of falling off near the sides.

High Bounce

Individuals who are sexually active or combination sleepers sometimes struggle with mobility in softer beds. These sleepers typically prefer mattresses like the Allswell with a bit more bounce to assist movement.

Construction: What’s Inside the Allswell?

The 10-inch thick Allswell Hybrid bed combines cooling graphite (charcoal) and copper-infused memory foam along with individually-wrapped coils to offer substantial support, cooling, and pressure relief. This quilted top layer is embroidered with the signature Allswell A insignia, and the gel-infused memory foam works to keep sleepers cool while the innerspring layer provides support.

  • The cover of this bed consists of a quilted top that’s made from a material that is a blend of 67 percent polyester and 33 percent polyethylene. Woven into this is the company’s A insignia. This top is quilted into the memory foam layer below for a plush, comfortable feel.
  • Below the cover is 2 inches of memory foam that provides the sleeper with comfort and quick pressure relief. This layer of memory foam is also infused with both charcoal and copper gel, which helps transfer heat away from the body to prevent any overheating during the night – an especially beneficial quality for those who prefer the cradling capabilities of memory foam but also tend to sleep hot.
  • The support layer sits at the bottom of the mattress. This layer consists of a system of individually pocketed 8-inch coils, which fosters airflow, cooling, stability, and motion isolation. Motion isolation can be helpful for those who sleep with a partner and are consistently woken up by movement during the night.

Unboxing & Off-Gassing

The Allswell mattress will arrive in the mail, compressed in a box. It should only take about 10 to 15 minutes total to completely unwrap and unbox, and we recommend doing this with a friend. Even though the setup is simple, a Queen Allswell weighs 100 pounds, which could be too heavy for some to lift on their own.

We also recommend setting it up in a well-ventilated room since it has an off-gassing period of about 24 to 48 hours. This is just a slight chemical odor and is common to beds made with foam. It should dissipate completely after 48 hours and be ready to sleep on.

Certifications

  • CertiPUR-US® certified: The foams in this bed are CertiPUR-US® certified. CertiPUR-US® is a third-party program that ensures the foams meet rigorous health and safety standards. This means they don’t contain harmful substances like ozone depleters, PBDEs, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and phthalates. They should also have low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.

Coupons, Trials, Warranties, and Shipping

  • Shipping – Ground shipping is free with any purchase over 35 dollars in the contiguous United States, excluding California. There is an additional shipping fee of 50 dollars for orders to Alaska or Hawaii, regardless of the total amount of your order.
  • White Glove Delivery – White glove delivery is optional for an additional fee. They can even remove your old mattress for you. However, this service is currently suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
  • Trial – For 100 nights, you can rest easy knowing you have considerable time to decide if the Allswell is the perfect bed for you, and if it isn’t, the company will refund your money.
  • Warranty – Allswell offers a 10-year limited warranty.
  • Return Policy – Allswell recommends trying your mattress out for three weeks to let your body adjust. If you don’t love your mattress after this, return it before your 100-night sleep trial is up for a full refund. Note: You’ll only be refunded for the purchase price of the mattress, not for any shipping or mattress recycling fees.

Overall Summary

Allswell’s flagship mattress is a quality hybrid with an impressive, budget-friendly price tag that could work great for sleepers who need a firmer mattress.

Side Sleepers

1/5

Side sleepers are likely the only type of people who won’t have the best experience with the Allswell as it runs a bit on the firmer side. While it offers excellent support, the pressure relief isn’t at the level provided in softer options, which could better accommodate those with hip or shoulder pain.

Back Sleepers

5/5

This bed is an excellent choice for back sleepers due to the gel-infused memory foam and dense poly foam top layers. These should fill in space under your lower back region, providing lumbar support and contouring, keeping your spine aligned. The innerspring coils offer stable support and bounce, letting you adjust as needed.

Stomach Sleepers

4/5

Most stomach sleepers should enjoy this bed due to its firm nature. Sleeping on your stomach isn’t ideal for your lower back; however, if that’s what you’re resigned to, a firmer bed will help to keep your spine aligned and work to minimize hyperextension. The only exception here would be heavyweight stomach sleepers, who may want a more supportive bed for this position.

Combination Sleepers

4/5

Repositioning is often a concern for combination sleepers, but the Allswell’s bounce should make it easier. Adjustments in the middle of the night shouldn’t be a struggle due to the mattress’ individually-wrapped coils and the high-density foam’s responsiveness. However, if you often end up on your side, the firm feel could leave some extra cushioning to be desired.

Couples

4/5

Allswell is an excellent option for couples due to its terrific motion isolation, cooling coil support for temperature maintenance, and thicker coils around the perimeter for edge support. This mattress also has excellent bounce for those who are sexually active. The only drawback is that the firmness won’t be as accommodating if one or both partners is a side sleeper.

Heavy Sleepers

3/5

While Allswell is a quality mattress, you can only pack so much into a 10-inch thick product. The innerspring design offers terrific support. However, heavier frames may sink through the top foam layers more quickly than others and could experience discomfort if resting on the coils. However, there is a 100-night trial period to see for yourself without worry.

Lightweight Sleepers

4/5

Lightweight sleepers often experience more shoulder and hip pain than others because they don’t sink as deeply into a bed’s pressure-relief layers. As a result, they typically prefer a softer mattress. The Allswell should be fine for stomach sleepers and back sleepers who like a firmer bed, but side sleepers should avoid this one.

Average Weight Sleepers

4/5

This bed is well suited for average-weight sleepers – especially those who prefer to sleep on their stomachs or backs. People between 130 and 230 pounds should sink in just enough to get the benefits of the top memory foam layer, without bottoming out on the firmer support layer below. It’s ideal for average-weight sleepers who love a firm bed.

Overall Value

4/5

Allswell offers an incredible value with their budget mattress, which could be great for shoppers who want to avoid spending thousands on a new mattress. This hybrid is up to 1,000 dollars lower in price compared to other bed-in-a-box options, and the company offers an industry-standard trial and warranty deal along with free shipping to most customers.

Our Verdict

It can be difficult to find a quality mattress for under 1,000 dollars, let alone under 500. Walmart’s Allswell mattress is just that: affordable and well-made.

We think this mattress will be well suited for those who sleep on their backs or stomachs along with light to average-weight sleepers. It should feel cool with its gel-infused memory foam and innerspring coils. We also think the good amount of bounce it provides could be useful for combination sleepers. Couples are another group who could enjoy this bed — unless either partner is a side sleeper.

While heavy back sleepers may enjoy this bed, we think in general, they would be better off with something that’s thicker and is built specifically for heavy sleepers.
