Sleep Advisor’s Testing Methodology
At Sleep Advisor, our mattress reviews are based on findings from in-person tests that allow us to have a genuine understanding of how the mattress feels and performs. We look at features that are valuable to consumers, such as temperature control, bounce, edge support, and motion isolation.
We also evaluate mattress performance for back, side, and stomach sleeping. Lying in different positions lets us know how supportive the bed is and if it’s good at relieving pressure.
We then take all the information we’ve gathered to rate the bed in specific categories. These results allow us to help our readers find the right mattress for their needs.

Why the Puffy Lux Hybrid Earned Editor’s Pick
The Puffy Lux Hybrid provides a more soft, gentle surface than many other beds, which should be soothing for aches and pains associated with orthopedic needs. At the same time, it holds an endorsement from the American Chiropractic Association for its exceptional back and spinal support.
It earned first place on this list because of its superb ability to balance these two factors—pressure relief and support—for a memorably comfortable sleep experience.
What’s the Puffy Lux Hybrid Made Of?
The Puffy Lux Hybrid is 12 inches tall with six total layers when you include its top and bottom covers. The top cover is hypoallergenic, stain-resistant, and easily removable.
Underneath, the next layer is made from 1.5 inches of a proprietary Cooling Cloud™ Foam, followed by a 1.5-inch layer of Dual Cloud Foam. These layers conform to the shape of the body, catering to sleepers who need more pressure relief. Next, 2 inches of Climate Comfort™ Foam regulate temperature and promote airflow throughout the mattress.
The core of the mattress is 7 inches thick, made up of individually wrapped coils and a foam perimeter for stable support. The base cover on the bottom of the mattress works to make sure it doesn’t slip.
What I Liked
- Pressure-relieving – Those who prioritize pressure relief in a mattress will find their match in the Puffy Lux Hybrid. This bed’s softer feel and top foam comfort layers should provide the necessary cushioning to relieve aches and pains.
- Strong edge support – The foam around the outer edges of the Puffy Lux Hybrid gives the perimeter of the bed a sturdy feel. You shouldn’t feel any buckling lying at or near the edges.
Potential Drawbacks
- Not for stomach sleepers – I’m a stomach sleeper myself, and when I laid down in that position, I felt a bit more sinkage than I’d prefer. Stomach sleepers should look for a firmer bed.
- Not super bouncy – The softness at the top of the Puffy Lux Hybrid unfortunately doesn’t lend itself well to ease of movement. If you toss and turn a lot, you might feel “stuck” in the foam layers.
Customer Reviews of the Puffy Lux Hybrid
The Puffy Lux Hybrid boasts several 5 star reviews on its site from customers who credit the comfort of the mattress and its ease on their aches and pains for their high ratings.

Why the Helix Midnight Earned Best Hybrid Orthopedic Mattress
The Helix Midnight rates well for sleepers who may be struggling with back, hip, and shoulder pain, so it’s a great pick when it comes to an orthopedic hybrid mattress. Its innerspring coils provide support while its foams specialize in pressure relief, and it’s also an exceptionally versatile bed. It should work for a variety of sleepers in a multitude of positions due to its medium-firm feel and ability to evenly distribute weight.
What’s the Helix Midnight Made Of?
The Helix Midnight has five internal layers that add up to 11.5 inches in height.
Its soft cover leads into an initial layer of Memory Plus Foam, a pressure-relieving material exclusive to the Helix brand. Beneath, two layers of Helix Responsive Foam add a bit of bounce to the bed, as well as more cushioning between sleepers and the mattress’s spring unit.
All of these foams are CertiPUR-US® certified, meaning they don’t contain certain potentially harmful materials.
The springs in the Midnight are individually encased in fabric pockets to prevent too much motion transfer and provide targeted pushback. They’re also reinforced on the long sides of the bed, so if you roll to the brink of the mattress, you should still feel supported.
What We Liked
- Isolates motion well – We found the Helix Midnight to be an exceptional option for couples, as it minimizes motion transfer. Restless sleepers and partners with different sleep schedules shouldn’t bother one another too much with their movements..
- Cooling capability – The breathable cover helps to keep the surface of the mattress cool to the touch, and most sleepers seem to avoid overheating thanks to the added airflow around the hybrid’s coils.
Potential Drawbacks
- Not much cradling – You won’t sink very deeply into the Helix Midnight. “If you want that old-school memory foam feel, this bed may not be for you,” said Emma. For a mattress that surrounds you with a cradling feel, try an all-foam model.
- Too soft for stomach sleepers – “I might suggest a firmer mattress for exclusive stomach sleepers,” Emma said. In this position, her hips felt as though they were sinking a trifle too low.
Customer Reviews of the Helix Midnight
The Helix Midnight rates 4.5 stars out of 5 on Helix’s website. The main negative is that reviewers tend to find it too soft for their liking and feel as though they’re sinking. But overall, users say they’re getting a great nights’ sleep and some pain relief.

Why the WinkBed Earned Best Orthopedic Mattress for Couples
The WinkBed mattress is an excellent choice for people with orthopedic needs, and particularly for couples. It’s designed with a blend of pressure-relieving foam layers and individually wrapped coils to provide the right level of support and comfort for each sleeper.
Where couples are concerned, the WinkBed is a great option since it has plenty of bounce for sexually-active partners and strong edges for full use of the surface. With plenty of firmness options, too, it’s easier to tailor the bed to the needs of both partners.
What’s the WinkBed Made Of?
The WinkBed is 13.5 inches tall and comes in four firmness options: Softer, Luxury Firm, Firmer, and Plus.
The cover is made of moisture-wicking Tencel™ for a comfortably soft and dry sleep experience.
Then, the Euro pillow top gives the mattress its cushiony surface, along with gel-infused foam that seeks to reduce unwanted heat buildup.
A series of transitional comfort foams lead into the innerspring unit beneath. This layer is made up of individually wrapped coils that are zoned to balance support and give across different parts of the body, thereby encouraging healthy spinal alignment. Along the perimeter of the mattress, the coils are reinforced to keep the edges solid.
What We Liked
- Something for everyone – The WinkBed is available in three different firmness levels, allowing shoppers to choose the feel that best suits their needs. The different models include Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm. There’s also a WinkBed Plus option created specifically for plus-size folks.
- Durable and strong – Sean called the bed “strong and sturdy,” and I agree. The materials inside this mattress should give it an enviable longevity.
Potential Drawbacks
- No hugging foams – Memory foam lovers won’t find the swaddling feeling they know and love on the WinkBed. The lift this mattress offers makes you feel like you’re lying on top of it, rather than “in” it.
- Some motion transfers – When it comes to dampening motion, the WinkBed does fine for a hybrid, but it won’t have the same effect as an all-foam bed. The coils that make it super bouncy also lead to movement across the mattress surface, so some super-restless couples might still wake each other up.
Customer Reviews of the WinkBed
On the WinkBeds site, the WinkBed earns a 4.8 out of 5 stars. One drawback of the WinkBed mattress is that it might be too expensive for budget-conscious shoppers, but overall it offers excellent durability and customizable firmness options.

Why the Nectar Earned Best Orthopedic Mattress for Pressure Relief
Nectar’s flagship mattress is an all-foam bed that should benefit folks with orthopedic concerns because of its soft surface. The 2-inch therapeutic gel memory foam layer promotes excellent pressure relief, contouring to your body and fostering proper spinal alignment.
You’ll also get this soft support without many of the drawbacks of traditional foam. For example, its single-action cooling system helps you remain comfortable throughout the night, regulating your body temperature and preventing overheating—a boon when it comes to all-foam mattresses.
What’s the Nectar Made Of?
The Nectar mattress is 12 inches thick and has a total of five layers including its lower and top covers. All of the foams in this mattress are CertiPUR-US® certified.
The top cover is made from polyethylene fibers for a breathable sleep experience. Underneath, the first layer of foam is a 2-inch sheet of gel memory foam for cooling pressure relief.
Then, 3 inches of a more responsive foam help with repositioning and support. The 7-inch base layer provides stability and prevents the mattress from sagging, ensuring that you have a comfortable sleep surface for years to come.
The lower cover keeps your mattress and everything within it from shifting around.
What I Liked
- Good for couples – The Nectar’s 3-inch transition layer minimizes motion transfer, ensuring that you don’t feel your partner’s movements during the night. This is great for couples who have different sleeping patterns or are easily disturbed.
- Affordable – This bed comes in at a super reasonable price when you consider the quality of what you’re getting. A queen will cost you about $1,000, but that’s before coupons and sales.
Potential Drawbacks
- Too soft for some – Some heavier sleepers or those who prefer to sleep on their stomachs might have trouble feeling supported by the Nectar’s all-foam construction. They should check out some of the firmer mattresses on this list, instead.
- Could be cooler – Though the Nectar has some cooling capabilities built into its foams, it’s still more likely to retain heat than a hybrid mattress, which has more airflow.
Customer Reviews of the Nectar
With thousands of reviews on Nectar’s website, the Nectar mattress has an average 4.8 out of 5 stars. One common customer complaint about the Nectar mattress is its longer-than-average break-in period, while many customers praise its excellent value and comfort once fully settled.

Why the Titan Plus Earned Best Orthopedic Mattress for Heavyweight Sleepers
The Titan Plus is an innovative mattress engineered specifically for heavyweight sleepers. It features a combination of high-density foam and individually wrapped coils that both provide exceptional support and durability. These foams and coils work together to cushion the body without allowing too much sinkage, which is often a problem for heavier folks.
From an orthopedic perspective, the mattress is designed to distribute weight evenly and relieve pressure from sensitive areas such as the hips, shoulders, and back.
What’s the Titan Plus Made Of?
The Titan Plus is 11 inches tall with five layers. It features a breathable cover that promotes airflow and helps regulate temperature, which is essential for people who tend to sleep hot.
The topmost layer of the mattress beneath the cover is a 1-inch layer of gel memory foam for cooling pressure relief.
Next, 2 inches of TitanFlex™ foam add responsiveness to the sleep surface while contouring to your body.
Six inches of individually wrapped coils make up the supportive innerspring unit, which features reinforced coils along the perimeter for edge support. Finally, at the bottom of the bed is a 2-inch dense foam base.
What We Liked
- Solid edges – The Titan Plus offers robust edge support, which is an advantage for sleepers who need a stable surface to sit on and for getting in and out of bed.
- Great for couples – Bounce from the coils and the motion-isolating capabilities of the foams work well for couples who are sexually active, as well as restless sleepers.
Potential Drawbacks
- Too hard for some – Since the Titan Plus was designed with heavier sleepers in mind, folks on the lighter side may find it too firm for their liking, and may not get a comfortable sink from the surface.
- Not cradling – This mattress is on the firmer side and has a distinctly hybrid feel. You probably won’t feel very swaddled by the thinner foam layers on top.
Customer Reviews of the Titan Plus
Users on Titan by Brooklyn Bedding’s site have given the Titan Plus a 4.7 out of 5 stars. Customers find the Titan Plus mattress to offer exceptional durability and support, but some mention that it might be too firm for those who prefer a softer feel.

Why the Nolah Signature Earned Best Orthopedic Mattress for Side Sleepers
The Nolah Signature mattress is an excellent choice for people with orthopedic needs, particularly side sleepers. It features an all-foam construction that offers exceptional pressure relief, cradling the body and reducing stress on the hips, shoulders, and other sensitive areas.
This mattress is also designed with Nolah’s patented AirFoam™, which Nolah claims is scientifically proven to provide four times more pressure relief than traditional memory foam.
What’s the Nolah Signature Made Of?
The Nolah Signature is 12 inches thick and has a total of five layers including the cover. This breathable organic cotton cover helps regulate temperature and keeps sleepers from overheating throughout the night.
The first layer underneath the cover is a 2.5-inch layer of AirFoam™ for cooling and pressure relief. Then, 1.5 inches of Active Response Foam give the bed some bounce. A firmer 1-inch layer of AirFoam™ adds support and serves as the final comfort layer before the core below. This foundation is made up of 7 inches of dense, durable foam.
What We Liked
- Dampens motion transfer – In addition to its pressure-relieving properties, the Nolah Signature also offers excellent motion isolation. This feature ensures that any movement on one side of the bed does not disturb the other side, making the Signature an excellent choice for couples.
- Cool for foam – Foam beds are notorious for overheating, but the Nolah Signature has a cooler feel thanks to its breathable layers and AirFoam™ technology. If you’re a hot sleeper who doesn’t want to switch to a hybrid, you should still feel hugged by this mattress without getting too hot.
Potential Drawbacks
- Can feel too soft – The Nolah Signature feels pretty plush, so it won’t be a match for people who require a firmer, more supportive mattress. Heavier sleepers and those who sleep on their stomachs should steer clear.
- Lacking edge support – The foam edges of this mattress don’t have any special reinforcement, so they’re likely to buckle or sag under weight.
Customer Reviews of the Nolah Signature
The Nolah Signature gets a 4.8 out of 5 stars on Nolah’s website. One potential drawback of the Nolah Signature mattress is its limited firmness options, but it excels in providing exceptional pressure relief and a cooling sleep experience.

Why the Bear Original Earned Best Orthopedic Mattress for Athletes
The Bear Original is an all-foam bed with layers that provide a responsive, cooling respite after an action-filled day.
But many athletes want more than standard comfort from their beds—they need relief for achy bones and muscles, too. When it comes to orthopedic needs, this mattress’s high-density foam should evenly distribute your body weight while relieving tension from key pressure points.
What’s the Bear Original Made Of?
The Bear Original mattress has three foam layers in its 10-inch construction. The cover of the mattress is made of breathable Tencel™ fibers sustainably derived from wood pulp. For an added fee, you can upgrade to an allegedly recovery-enhancing Celliant® cover.
The first foam layer is made of memory foam infused with cooling gel that drives away heat while promoting proper alignment. Underneath, a layer of Bear’s dynamic foam allows for both responsiveness and pressure relief. Finally, a layer of high-density foam gives the bed its supportive base.
What We Liked
- Fancy upgrade – For an additional fee, your Bear Original mattress can feature a cover made with Celliant®, a performance fabric that is designed to convert body heat into infrared energy. Celliant® is reportedly able to promote circulation and enhance muscle recovery.
- Feels cool – The Tencel™ or Celliant® top layer should help regulate body temperature by offering a breathable surface. Bear also infuses its memory foam layer with graphite gelto further promote a cooler sleep space.
Potential Drawbacks
- Thin profile – The Bear is only 10 inches thick, making it the thinnest option on this list and a little lower than most mattresses. Without a platform or elevated base, it’ll be quite low to the ground.
- Too firm for some – Lightweight side sleepers may find the firm foams in the Bear’s construction just a bit too unyielding to give them proper pressure relief.
Customer Reviews of the Bear Mattress
According to Bear’s website, the Bear Original scores about 4.5 out of 5 stars. Customers appreciate the Bear Original mattress for its excellent pressure relief but have reported that its edge support may be lacking, which could affect those who use the full mattress surface.

Why the Saatva Classic Earned Best Orthopedic Mattress for Back Pain
The Saatva Classic is one of my favorite beds to recommend for back pain, as its signature construction focuses on healthy spinal alignment and lumbar support.
Its two coil units plus proprietary Lumbar Zone® Technology work to prevent pressure buildup while keeping you pleasantly aloft. The Classic was also awarded a seal of approval from chiropractors, making it a strong choice for those with general orthopedic needs.
What’s the Saatva Classic Made Of?
Each Saatva Classic begins with a 3-inch Euro pillow top. Covered by organic cotton, this plush comfort layer consists of soft foams, but tightens up slightly around the middle to better lift your lumbar spine.
Underneath is a layer of high-density memory foam that takes up the same middle region of the bed. It’s meant to combine pressure relief with additional targeted lumbar support.
Next is the first of the Classic’s two coil units: a zoned layer of pocketed coils that provide extra pushback in the bed’s center third (again, directly under the lumbar area.) It’s backed up by a second coil unit, wherein the springs are interconnected and augmented by a Lumbar Zone® Active Spinal Wire. This wire—you guessed it—borders the lumbar region for even more lift.
This bed comes in two heights: 11.5 or 14.5 inches. You can also choose between a Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, or Firm feel.
What I Liked
- Lasts long – One of the standout features of the Saatva Classic is its durability. Thanks to springs made of recycled carbon steel that’s tempered three times, this mattress is engineered to last long and resist sagging.
- Customizable – With three firmness levels and two heights to choose from, you can easily find the perfect mattress makeup to suit your individual needs.
Potential Drawbacks
- Returns will cost you – If you want to return your Saatva mattress within the trial window, you’ll have to pay $99 to have it shipped back. Just something to consider if you prefer to try before you buy.
- Motion carries – I could definitely sense larger movements when testing out the Saatva Classic.
Customer Reviews of the Saatva Classic
The Saatva Classic rates 4.8 stars out of 5 on Saatva’s website. One negative aspect customers found with the Saatva Classic mattress is that it may feel too firm for some users, while a notable advantage is its high-quality materials, providing durability and support.

Why the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Earned Best Orthopedic Mattress for Hot Sleepers
The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid has multiple features that keep it cool. First, TitaniumGel™ infused into the TitanFlex™ foam minimizes heat retention. The coil layer also increases airflow, which helps the bed stay breezy. Brooklyn Bedding also provides the option to add a GlacioTex™ cooling cover for extra-hot sleepers.
The Signature Hybrid is also available in three different firmness levels, allowing customers to choose the level of support that best meets their needs. This is particularly important for people with orthopedic concerns, who may require a firmer or softer mattress to properly support their spine and alleviate tension from pressure points.
What’s the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Made Of?
The Signature Hybrid mattress from Brooklyn Bedding features a five-layered construction and stands 12.5 inches tall. You can buy it in a Soft, Medium, or Firm feel.
The first two layers beneath the breathable quilted top are proprietary foams: a Supreme Response comfort layer for immediate bounce-back and a VariFlex™ layer to prevent sinkage and transition into the coil layer below. The innerspring unit consists of individually wrapped coils, designed to deliver excellent support for proper spinal alignment. More Ascension® coils line the perimeter for stronger edges.
Finally, the base layer is made from high-density foam, which adds durability and even more support to the mattress.
What We Liked
- Fair price – We consistently champion the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid as one of the most affordable hybrids on the market, especially considering the bang you’ll get for your buck. A queen should only run you about $1,300 before Brooklyn’s frequent sales and coupons.
- Lifted feel – If you worry about sinking into your bed, this hybrid should keep you aloft. Emma noted that she felt “more on top of the mattress rather than in it.”
Potential Drawbacks
- A little firm – This same lifted feeling can cause trouble for folks on the lighter side, especially if they prefer sleeping on their sides. They might not get the pressure relief they need from this bed.
- Simply designed – You get everything you need at a high quality and a fair price with the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid, but it’s still on the plainer side, especially when compared to other mattresses on this list. Consider upgrading if you’re looking for extra-trendy features.
Customer Reviews of the Signature Hybrid
On Brooklyn Bedding’s website, the Brooklyn Signature has 4.7 out of 5 stars. The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid mattress receives praise from customers for its versatility with different firmness options, but some have mentioned that it may produce slight noise when bearing weight.

Why the Birch Natural Earned Best Eco-Friendly Orthopedic Mattress
The Birch Natural should delight eco-conscious shoppers with its list of materials, including organic wool, organic cotton, and natural latex.
The bed’s medium-firm feel should also deliver an optimal balance of comfort and support. While the latex helps to alleviate pressure, the individually wrapped coils deliver targeted support to different areas of the body for a healthy spinal alignment, all of which can help with orthopedic pain or discomfort.
What’s the Birch Natural Made Of?
The Birch Natural is 11 inches tall and has six total layers including its cover. Said cover is made from GOTS-certified organic cotton for a soft, breathable sleep surface. An organic wool layer beneath acts as a natural fire retardant, and a second sheet of organic wool provides additional comfort and temperature regulation.
Next is the natural latex layer for bounce and pressure relief, followed by the supportive innerspring layer made up of individually wrapped coils. These coils are also reinforced along the long sides of the mattress for edge support. Finally, another base layer of wool gives the bed its sturdy foundation.
What We Liked
- Breathability – The Birch Natural is excellent at temperature regulation. All the eco-friendly layers in this bed naturally help to create a temperature-neutral space.
- Big bounce – The combination of latex and coils gives this bed a super-responsive feel, perfect for restless sleepers or those who switch positions during the night.
Potential Drawbacks
- Pretty pricey – The Birch Natural’s eco-conscious construction features a lot of high-quality, ethically sourced organic and natural materials that drive up the price. A queen will run you more than $2,000 before coupons and sales, so it’s not the best choice for folks on a budget.
- Not the softest – Though the Birch Natural has some soft wool layers on top, it’s by no means a plush mattress. Side sleepers and lightweight folks may need a bed that has more give.
Customer Reviews of the Birch Natural
According to Birch’s website, the Birch Natural scores a 4.6 out of 5 stars. While some users consider the Birch Natural mattress to be on the pricier side, it gains customer appreciation for its organic materials and sustainable, eco-friendly construction.

What to Look for in an Orthopedic Mattress
When you are shopping for an orthopedic mattress, you will want to take note of beds that have been constructed to provide gentle cradling to your joints and spine. These mattresses should also have a sturdy foundation that promotes spinal stability and alignment. Good orthopedic mattresses often combine a supportive base with pressure-relieving foam or latex.
Type of Mattress
Innerspring Mattresses
Innerspring mattresses are constructed with coils that are used to support sleepers, and they often have thin comfort layers on the top. These mattresses are a more traditional design and often have great bounce and temperature regulation.
When it comes to an innerspring mattress that will help with aches and pains, you will want to consider those with supportive coils that can help keep your spine neutral. However, traditional innerspring beds usually don’t have thicker foam layers to help with pressure relief, which is why they may not be the best choice here.
Hybrid Mattresses
Beds that combine innerspring coils with memory foam, latex, or poly foam are known as hybrid mattresses. These beds are a great solution for those who like innerspring mattresses but worry about their lack of pressure relief.
Typically, hybrids utilize memory foam or latex specifically for the comfort layer(s) toward the top.
If you are looking for an orthopedic hybrid mattress, it is important to find one that has an upper layer that is soft enough to provide pressure relief for your shoulders, hips, and lower back, combined with a base that will promote spinal support.
Memory Foam Mattresses
Memory foam mattresses are made with a specialized material that contours to your body, providing a cradling, hug-like feel. Beds made from memory foam often provide excellent pressure relief due to their contouring nature.
These mattresses can often be great for orthopedic issues, but it is important to make sure that the bed not only gives you great pressure relief but also balances this out with dense support layers that keep your spine in a healthy alignment.
Latex Mattresses
Latex mattresses are also great for pressure relief, offering a slightly different feel from memory foam, though. While memory foam is more slow-moving, latex is quick-responding to movement, which is great because this can make it easier to change positions. Another advantage of latex is that it’s temperature-neutral, and if you’re looking at natural and organic latex beds specifically, these are also eco-friendly.
Though latex beds are highly durable, they do come at a higher price point. That said, their ability to last longer might be worth it to shoppers who want longevity from an orthopedic bed.
Other Considerations When Shopping for an Orthopedic Mattress
Sleeping Position
If you are a back sleeper, you’ll want to look at mattresses that are going to evenly distribute your weight, giving you both spinal support and pressure-relieving comfort. With side sleepers, these folks need to make sure they’re looking at beds that excel at pressure relief.
This is because the weight is concentrated in the hip and shoulder when you are lying on your side.
Stomach sleepers need to ensure their mattress keeps their hips level with the rest of their body. If a mattress isn’t supportive enough to do this, they could wind up arching their lower back too much, which could result in pain (or worsen existing pain). Lastly, combination sleepers should look at mattresses that are adaptable for multiple sleep positions for both support and pressure relief, along with beds that foster easier repositioning.
Weight/Body Type of Sleepers
Your body weight is a major consideration when finding the best orthopedic mattress because it can impact how a bed accommodates your needs.
Usually, average-weight people are a great fit for beds with a medium or medium-firm feel, though some folks who are stomach sleepers, for instance, may prefer something slightly firmer. should look for a bed that has a medium to medium-firm feel.
Lightweight sleepers feel beds as more firm because they don’t sink in as much. As such, they are typically better off with soft to medium mattresses, depending on their sleep position. Softer beds allow petite sleepers to still experience quality pressure relief, especially for side sleeping. Heavyweight sleepers, which are considered those above 230 pounds, typically find better comfort on highly supportive, firmer mattresses that help ensure they don’t bottom out.
Support and Firmness
Support refers to how well your body is supported, whereas firmness reflects how soft or hard the bed feels. For great support, you want to check that the bed has a strong support system of either high-density foams or innerspring coils.
As mentioned, side sleepers tend to prefer softer mattresses that provide more gentle support to the shoulder and hip areas. A firmer mattress can put uncomfortable pressure on these regions for side sleepers, especially if you’re lighter in weight.
Stomach and back sleepers often appreciate a more firm and supportive mattress due to how this helps support spinal alignment in these positions. Additionally, heavier people typically like firmer models since they often have more robust support.
Cooling
Keeping your body temperature regulated throughout the night may help you sleep better because a lower body temperature can stimulate melatonin production1, a hormone that promotes sleep. This is helpful for those with muscle and joint pain because when you sleep well, this reduces your sensitivity to pain2.
The coils in innerspring and hybrid mattresses and the open cell design of latex are excellent for air circulation. Additionally, many brands include other naturally temperature-regulating materials like cotton or TENCEL™.
Memory foam has a reputation for sleeping hot, but many newer iterations of these beds include gel-infused foam or advanced cooling covers.

Motion Isolation
Couples sharing a bed may be particularly interested in mattresses with motion isolation, even more so if you or your partner deal with orthopedic aches. Motion isolation means that movement on one side of the bed doesn’t make its way over to other areas. If your mattress doesn’t adequately absorb your partner’s movements, not only could it wake you, but it could also exacerbate your discomfort.
Memory foam beds are known for their motion-isolating properties, as well as many hybrids containing memory foam, particularly those that utilize individually wrapped coils.
Sex
Those who have orthopedic issues but are still sexually active often find that beds with lots of bounce and responsiveness make intimacy more enjoyable. This is because these beds are able to respond quicker to movement, keeping sleepers from feeling ‘stuck’ in a mattress.
Latex and latex hybrid mattresses can offer great pressure relief and support for orthopedic issues while maintaining great responsiveness for movement during sex.
Pressure Relief and Contouring
Another key component when shopping for an orthopedic bed is pressure relief. Orthopedic beds typically provide pressure relief through top comfort layers maybe from materials like memory foam or latex, which can contour the sleeper’s shape to cradle the joints and mitigate pressure buildup.
Edge Support
Orthopedic mattresses often provide good edge support when they’re designed with a strong perimeter, which helps prevent sagging when you sit or sleep near the edge of the bed. Edge support is typically provided by either high-density foams along the perimeter or reinforced coils.
Certifications or Endorsements
Some orthopedic mattresses may include certifications from organizations such as CertiPUR-US® or OEKO-TEX®, which indicate that the materials used in the mattress meet strict standards for safety and environmental responsibility. Additionally, endorsements from medical organizations or groups like the American Chiropractic Association may provide additional reassurance for consumers.
Speak With Your Doctor
Before buying an orthopedic mattress, we suggest discussing your options with your doctor. Everyone’s needs are unique, and they can address any specific medical conditions and talk to you about what might work for your individual needs. Ultimately, you want to ensure that you make an informed decision and invest in a mattress that will promote better sleep and overall health.
Trial and Warranty
The types of warranties that are normally included with an orthopedic mattress vary depending on the manufacturer but typically include a limited warranty ranging from 10-25 years, though some brands offer lifetime deals as well.
Warranties usually cover defects in materials and workmanship. They may also have a prorated period during which the manufacturer will repair or replace the mattress at a reduced cost to the customer. Some warranties may also include specific guarantees related to certain features, such as pressure relief or motion isolation.
Budget
When shopping for a bed on a budget, you want to make sure you’re sacrificing comfort and support for a cheaper price tag. Orthopedic mattresses can be more expensive, but shopping online directly from manufacturers has helped bring down overhead costs we would usually see in traditional brick-and-mortar stores.
Another tip could be to go down a size if possible. For example, couples could purchase a Queen size rather than a King or California King to help them save on a new orthopedic bed. Also, shopping during holiday sales can save you big bucks.
What Causes Back and Joint Pain?
Many people are affected with joint and back pain — the latter being one of the most common health issues3 in the United States.
The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Diseases points to the following reasons why people develop back and join pain3:
- Weight gain and inactive lifestyle – Those who are overweight and don’t exercise regularly are at an increased risk of developing back and joint pain. Extra weight can put stress on the back and a lack of core strength can lead to spinal instability.
- Heavy lifting – Jobs or activities that require repeated heavy lifting or twisting can cause back and joint pain.
- Poor posture – If you spend hours working at a desk it may cause bad posture which can lead to back pain.
- Heredity and age – Back pain and joint pain become more common as you age, particularly after 45. Genetics may also mean that a disorder that causes back pain has been passed down to you.
- Spinal mechanical/structural problems – Problems with the structure or mechanics of your spine can create back pain. Some of these issues include sprains, herniated discs, fractured vertebrae, scoliosis, and spinal stenosis.
- Arthritis – Inflammatory conditions such as Ankylosing spondylitis, a specific type of spinal arthritis, can cause back pain. Additionally, other forms of arthritis can create painful joints.
- Medical conditions – Pregnancy, endometriosis, fibromyalgia, kidney infections or stones, osteoporosis, and other medical conditions can cause people to feel back and joint pain.
How Does Back and Joint Pain Impact Sleep?
Back and joint pain can significantly impact the quality of one’s sleep. When people experience pain in their back or joints, like with arthritis, it can be difficult to find a comfortable sleeping position, leading to tossing and turning throughout the night.
Stress from chronic pain can further exacerbate sleep problems because it also makes it harder to fall asleep4. Additionally, pain can cause people to wake up frequently throughout the night, disrupting the restorative process of deep sleep and leaving them feeling unrefreshed in the morning. Furthermore, experts say that not sleeping well could worsen pain sensitivity.2

How Can a Mattress Help with Back and Joint Pain?
- Enhanced support: Orthopedic mattresses can provide enhanced support to the body’s natural curves, reducing the risk of back pain.
- Alleviate pressure points: These mattresses help to alleviate pressure points, reducing the likelihood of developing painful conditions such as joint pain or arthritis.
- Better sleep quality: Orthopedic mattresses may improve sleep quality by minimizing pain and discomfort, making it easier to sleep soundly.
- Long-term use: Orthopedic mattresses are typically made from high-quality materials for better durability and longevity.
Disadvantages of an Orthopedic Mattress
- Price: Orthopedic mattresses may be more expensive due to the specialized materials and construction required.
- Break-in period: These mattresses may take some time to break in and become comfortable, especially if they are made from materials such as memory foam.
- Can be harder to differentiate: Not all mattresses advertised as orthopedic beds are truly orthopedic. Plus, each person’s orthopedic needs can greatly vary, so it’s important to do your research and consult your doctor to help you choose the right bed for your needs.
What Is the Best Sleeping Position for Back and Joint Pain?
Back Sleeping
Sleeping on your back can be an excellent way to alleviate back pain5. If this is your preferred way to sleep or if you want to try it for relief, it is best to sleep on a mattress that will keep your spine aligned and still provide some pressure relief.
Using a medium-loft pillow should also ensure a healthy neck alignment with the rest of your spine. Also, placing a pillow under your knees can help ease pressure on your lower back.
Side Sleeping
Rather than side sleeping in the fetal position with your legs bent up, experts advise keeping your legs straight to more evenly distribute your body weight.5 Additionally, you can try adding a pillow between your legs when you’re sleeping on your side to further enhance your body alignment.
Combination Sleeping
It can be difficult to find consistent comfort if you’re experiencing back and joint pain, so even if you’re not naturally a combination sleeper, you may find yourself frequently adjusting to get comfortable. Combination sleepers will want a mattress that’s going to give them good support and pressure relief in multiple positions. However, they should also look at responsive beds that will make it easier to reposition during the night so they don’t aggravate their pain.
Stomach Sleeping
Stomach sleeping is considered the worst position to sleep in for pain because of its impact on the spine.5 This is because it puts a lot of strain on your lower back and neck. However, if you find it difficult to sleep on your back or side, there are measures you can take to improve your posture while on your stomach.
First, ensure you have a firmer mattress that will keep your midsection elevated so your lower back doesn’t curve. Also, use a flat pillow under your head (or no pillow at all) so that you don’t put too much strain on your neck.
Tips for Better Sleeping with Chronic Pain
- Experiment with different sleep positions: Try different sleep positions such as lying on your back with a pillow under your knees or lying on your side with a pillow between your legs. Find a position that is comfortable and reduces pressure on the affected area.
- Invest in a supportive mattress and pillow: An orthopedic mattress and pillow can provide the necessary support to keep your spine aligned and reduce pressure on your joints.
- Incorporate relaxation techniques: Practicing relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or progressive muscle relaxation could help reduce stress and promote relaxation, making it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep.
- Practice good sleep hygiene: Many people can get better sleep by incorporating good sleep hygiene into their daily routine. Good sleep hygiene refers to habits aimed at facilitating better sleep. These can include a regular bedtime and wake-up time, sleeping in a cool, dark, and quiet room, and having a relaxing nightly routine before bed.

Best Orthopedic Mattress FAQs
What is the best orthopedic mattress?
There is no one “best” orthopedic mattress that will work for everyone, as individual preferences and needs can vary greatly. However, some common features to look for in a high-quality orthopedic mattress include specialized materials such as memory foam or latex, zoned support systems, and multi-layer construction. It’s also important to choose a mattress that offers proper spinal alignment, reduces pressure points, and promotes even weight distribution for maximum support and comfort.
Should orthopedic mattresses be firm or soft?
The ideal firmness level of an orthopedic mattress will depend on individual preferences and needs, but generally speaking, many orthopedic mattresses have a medium or medium-firm feel that provides a balance of support and pressure relief. However, it’s important to note that firmness is also subjective. For example, one bed may feel firmer to a lightweight person than it would to a heavyweight person.
What orthopedic mattresses do doctors recommend?
Doctors may recommend different types of orthopedic mattresses depending on an individual’s specific needs. As such, we advise talking with your primary care doctor, who will have a more thorough understanding of your orthopedic issues, which can help you determine the orthopedic mattress that would be best for you.
What are orthopedic mattresses made from?
Orthopedic mattresses can be made from a variety of materials, but commonly used materials include memory foam, latex, high-density poly foam, and innerspring coils. Many orthopedic beds use a combination of these materials in order to provide better support and overall comfort.
How much does an orthopedic mattress cost?
The cost of an orthopedic mattress can vary depending on factors such as the size of the mattress, the materials used, and the brand. On average, a high-quality orthopedic mattress may be around at least 1,000 dollars for a Queen size. While very low-budget beds might seem appealing at first glance, it’s also important to consider the long-term benefits of investing in a high-quality orthopedic mattress, as improved sleep comfort and reduced orthopedic issues can lead to better overall health and well-being.
Where can I buy an orthopedic mattress?
Orthopedic mattresses can be purchased from a variety of retailers, including mattress stores, department stores, and online retailers. It’s important to do your research and read reviews before purchasing an orthopedic mattress, as the quality and effectiveness can vary depending on the brand and materials used. Additionally, be sure to check the retailer’s return and warranty policies before making a purchase.
