Who We Recommend The Leesa Original Hybrid For:
- Couples – This bed features excellent edge support along the perimeter, which is ideal for people who share their bed with a partner. Good edge support allows both parties to spread out and utilize the full surface space.
- Lightweight and average-weight sleepers – The Leesa Original Hybrid has two foam layers above the coil unit, but you don’t have to weigh over 130 pounds to activate these layers. In other words, sleepers who weigh around 130 pounds or less should find sufficient support and cradling in all sleeping positions.
- Responsive foam fans – The responsive poly foam in Leesa’s comfort layer provides bounce and pushback that you should enjoy when repositioning. This layer responds quickly to movement and acts as a transition layer before the coil unit.
Who We Don’t Recommend The Leesa Original Hybrid For:
- Heavy sleepers – People weighing over 230 pounds may experience the Leesa Original Hybrid as softer. While this hybrid may work for heavy sleepers who like a softer bed, those who weigh over 230 pounds are likely to sink too deep into the comfort layers, which can result in poor spine alignment.
- Stomach sleepers – Stomach sleepers need maximum support to keep the hips from sinking too deeply, which is why most are likely to prefer a firmer mattress (think something that falls at a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale). The Leesa might not offer enough support for dedicated stomach sleepers, especially if they weigh over 230 pounds.
First Impressions: Firmness & Feel
Firmness Scale: 6.5/10
Please remember that firmness is a subjective characteristic and your shape will dictate how you experience a bed. A heavier person whose weight can more easily push through softer comfort and support layers may experience a bed as softer than a lightweight person. The way you are shaped could also play a role here. Consider your weight, shape, and size when evaluating firmness scores.
Mattress firmness is one of the main factors to consider when buying a new bed. The last thing you want is your mattress to be too firm or soft for your preference. We rate mattress firmness on a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is the softest and 10 is the firmest.
The Leesa Original Hybrid mattress has a medium-firm feel that falls at a 6.5 out of 10 on our firmness scale. This is considered a mid-range firmness level, but some may experience it as a bit firmer, especially if they weigh under 130 pounds. Overall, the feel should work for most side and back sleepers and potentially some stomach sleepers depending on their body weight.
How Does It Feel?
If you place your hand on the mattress, the cover should feel cool and soft. As you sink further, you should feel a good amount of bounce from the coils and responsive comfort foam layer. The bouncier feel means the bed should quickly go back to its original position after you move. Combination sleepers and people with mobility issues should find it easier to move on this bed. Additionally, the foam layers up top contour closely to your body, providing pressure relief for sensitive spots.
What We Like About the Leesa Original Hybrid
- Cooling – This mattress features a breathable cover that helps with cooling and temperature regulation. In addition, the coils help promote additional airflow and breathability to keep the construction from overheating.
- Edge-to-edge support – Most hybrid mattresses have solid edge support, and this Leesa model is no exception. The coils extend from one edge to the other, which gives you sturdy support in the perimeter and the center of the bed.
- Motion isolation – Couples and co-sleepers should like how this mattress absorbs motion, allowing even light sleepers to achieve a good night’s sleep when sharing their bed with a restless sleeper.
Our Leesa Original Hybrid Complaints
- Too soft for stomach sleepers – The Leesa Original Hybrid mattress is rated a 6.5 out of 10 on our firmness scale, which means it has a true medium-firm feel. If you’re a dedicated stomach sleeper, the mid-range firmness may not be enough to support the hips from sinking into the foam layers. Lightweight stomach sleepers should still get sufficient support, but heavier folks will probably sink in too much.
- May not work for heavier individuals – People weighing less than 230 pounds should find the Leesa Original Hybrid supportive enough. However, if you weigh more than 230 pounds, you may want a firmer bed that is more suitable for heavier individuals – especially if you prefer sleeping on your back and stomach.
Testing the Leesa Original Hybrid Mattress: How it Performed
We test mattresses in a variety of ways to evaluate if it’s best for side, back, or stomach sleepers. Apart from testing how it feels in different sleeping positions, we also test for motion isolation by placing a water bottle on one side of the bed to see if it would wobble if we moved on the other side. If any wobbling is detected, that means the mattress doesn’t limit motion transfer well. Other tests include those for bounce, edge support, and cooling.
Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types
The Leesa Original Hybrid is designed to support an individual weight of 350 pounds or 700 pounds total for couples. While the bed can hold up to that amount, that doesn’t mean it’s necessarily ideal for heavier individuals.
Weight | Side Sleepers | Back Sleepers | Stomach Sleepers |
---|---|---|---|
Lightweight Sleepers (-130 lbs) | ★★☆ | ★★★ | ★★☆ |
Average-Weight Sleepers (130-230 lbs) | ★★★ | ★★★ | ★★☆ |
Heavyweight Sleepers (+230 lbs) | ★☆☆ | ★★☆ | ★☆☆ |
Side Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight side sleepers may experience the bed as firmer, but most should like how the comfort layers contour around pressure points.
- Average-weight Sleepers – Average-weight side sleepers should experience a balance of sinkage and support to achieve a healthy spine alignment even when most of their weight is concentrated across a narrow surface.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavy side sleepers are likely to sink too deeply into the comfort layers, which can result in poor sleeping posture.
Back Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight people sleeping on their back should like how the Leesa Original Hybrid contours to the lower back while supporting the body so that you don’t sink too deeply.
- Average-weight Sleepers – Average-weight sleepers may experience a deeper hug, but they should still get sufficient support so that the hips stay aligned with the rest of the body.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavy back sleepers who prefer a softer bed may like the Leesa Original Hybrid, but most are likely to prefer a firmer bed that doesn’t allow as much sinkage.
Stomach Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight stomach sleepers should get enough support from Leesa’s hybrid construction, even with the two softer comfort layers.
- Average-weight Sleepers – People who weigh between 130 to 230 pounds may want a firmer bed that can support the hips from sinking too deeply within the comfort layers.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Those who weigh over 230 pounds should find their hips sinking too deeply when sleeping on their stomach. This is because the Leesa is too soft for heavy sleepers, especially those who sleep on their stomach.
Pressure Relief & Pain
Leesa’s solution to pressure relief lies in the two foam layers above the coils. The memory foam layer is an inch tall and has a density of 2.50 pounds, whereas the poly foam comfort layer has the same density but is 1.5 inches tall. The two work together to contour to the shape of your body, offering gentle cradling and pressure relief.
The Leesa Original Hybrid should work well for relieving pressure on the shoulders, hips, and knees. In addition, it provides sufficient cushion to relieve sore joints.
Back Pain – People with back pain should like how the Leesa Original Hybrid combines comfort layers with its coil unit to keep the spine aligned in different positions. The bed’s medium-firm feel should also prevent the lower back from sinking too deeply while still allowing enough contouring to relieve any tension in this area.
Hip Pain – Hip pain can be difficult to sleep with if you’re a side sleeper, but Leesa’s comfort layers should allow enough sinkage to contour the area and prevent pressure build-up. However, it’s best to move onto your back to take the pressure off the hips.
Shoulder Pain – The Leesa Original Hybrid mattress should help with shoulder pain as it allows gentle cradling to relieve pressure and tension in this area without letting it sink too deeply.
Support
The Leesa Original Hybrid has over 789 steel coils in its support layer that are individually-wrapped to enhance comfort and motion isolation. These coils sit on top of a thin layer of poly foam, which gives the entire construction additional stability and sturdiness.
The strength and number of the coils allow this bed to excel at support. The entire layer contours to the shape of your body, providing pushback support where you need it the most. Additionally, sleepers carrying more weight may find that the Leesa Original Hybrid provides slightly more support than the standard Leesa all-foam model.
Motion Transfer
The Leesa Original Hybrid is a good choice for partners with different sleeping habits, as the bed’s use of memory foam and individually-wrapped coils help limit motion transfer. As a result, tossing and turning on one side shouldn’t disturb the person sleeping on the other side of the bed, which is especially useful if one partner is a light sleeper. Leesa’s motion isolation also makes it a good option for co-sleepers sharing their mattress with kids and pets.
Temperature Regulation / Cooling
The Leesa Original Hybrid offers decent airflow, helping hot sleepers stay cool even during the hottest months. Although memory foam tends to overheat at times, the Leesa cover and foam layers are breathable, which allows air to pass through for a more comfortable sleeping experience. On top of that, hybrids are known to run cooler than all-foam beds due to the addition of coils. The coils allow more air to circulate throughout the construction, preventing it from overheating.
Performance for Couples
Couples should like the Leesa Original Hybrid as it has a medium-firm feel that should feel comfortable in most sleeping positions. In addition, the bed has enough bounce, which sexually-active couples may appreciate. The edge-to-edge support makes it a particularly good option for couples who like to spread out across the entire surface of the bed. Most importantly, this hybrid has good motion isolation so partners don’t have to worry if they have different sleeping habits.

Preference-based Features
Bed-in-a-box Delivery
Leesa offers free shipping and delivers its beds compressed in a box. However, it’s important to note that Leesa beds are made-to-order, meaning you’ll probably have to wait longer to get one. They don’t have mattresses sitting in warehouses.
Exceptional Edge Support
Couples and single individuals who love using the entire surface of the bed should like Leesa’s edge support. Leesa included two side rows of 16-gauge coils in the perimeter, giving this bed solid edge support. This means the sides shouldn’t collapse if you sit or sleep near the edges of the bed.
Quiet Performance
Although this hybrid mattress has steel coils, you shouldn’t hear any creaking or squeaking. The bed is quiet, thanks to its two foam layers above the coils. Plus, all the springs are individually-wrapped for better motion isolation, which also helps absorb potential noise.
Designed and Handcrafted in the USA
Construction: What’s Inside the Leesa Original Hybrid?
At 11 inches tall, the Leesa Original Hybrid has five layers that are wrapped in a twill fabric cover. The cover is soft and breathable, which helps keep the surface of the bed cool. However, the cover is non-removable, so we recommend using a mattress protector to safeguard it from stains.
- Below the cover is the Memory Foam Recovery Layer. The memory foam contours to the body, so there’s no pressure build-up on the shoulders, back, and hips. This layer gives the classic memory foam feel, hugging the body without letting it sink in too deep.
- Next is the Comfort Layer, made of responsive poly foam that supports the upper memory foam while giving the bed some bounce. This foam responds quickly to movement, making the Leesa Original Hybrid a good choice for combination sleepers.
- The Support Layer features 789+ active response individually-wrapped coils for stability and durability. The coils also allow a solid amount of airflow to help keep other layers from overheating. Additionally, two rows of 16-gauge coils line the perimeter for edge-to-edge support.
- The coils rest on a thin Base Layer made of high-density poly foam. This unit is meant to provide additional support for the upper layers and prevent the coils from digging into the bed’s foundation or frame.
Unboxing & Off-Gassing
The Leesa Original Hybrid mattress is shipped in a box, which makes it easy to move from your door to the bedroom. However, keep in mind the package can be heavy even though it’s not as bulky. For this reason, it’s best to have a friend or family member help you. If not, you can choose white glove delivery for an additional 199 dollars.
Once the mattress arrives, place the box on your mattress foundation of choice. In most cases, it takes several hours for the bed to expand once it’s out of the plastic packaging. You may also notice slight off-gassing odors when you first remove the packaging. This is normal for most bed-in-a-box mattresses, so no need to worry. The smell isn’t harmful and should dissipate by the time the mattress expands and is ready for use.
Certifications
- Eco-Friendly Certifications – The foams in this bed are CertiPUR-US® certified. CertiPUR-US® is a third-party program that ensures the foams meet rigorous health and safety standards. This means they don’t contain harmful substances like ozone depleters, PBDEs, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and phthalates. They should also have low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Leesa Original Hybrid too firm?
We rated the Leesa Original Hybrid a 6.5 out of 10 on our firmness scale, which means it has a feel described as medium-firm. However, your exact experience with a mattress’s firmness depends on your body weight and preferred sleeping position. For example, an average-weight back sleeper is likely to experience it as medium-firm, whereas a heavy stomach sleeper may find it too soft.
Does the Leesa Original Hybrid sleep hot?
The Leesa Original Hybrid mattress has a cool-to-the-touch cover which helps the mattress surface remain cool throughout the night. This means heat shouldn’t build up around your body even if you usually sleep hot. In addition, hybrids typically run cooler than all-foam mattresses because they’re more breathable.
How long does the Leesa Original Hybrid last?
This hybrid mattress should last anywhere between eight to ten years, depending on how you use it. In other words, you can ensure a longer lifespan by avoiding jumping on the bed. In addition, you may also want to rotate it once in a while to ensure even wear.

Overall Summary
We’re fascinated by a bed made by rocket scientists, and we’re impressed by its cooling design and unique approach to pressure relief and support. While its unique feel may not be for everyone, we appreciate Purple’s take on a pressure-relieving, yet still supportive mattress.
Side Sleepers
4/5
Most side sleepers should enjoy the medium-firm feel, although this may depend on their individual body weight. Average-weight sleepers should find this Leesa mattress comfortable as the upper foam and poly foam layers conform to the body. However, lightweight side sleepers may want a softer bed to provide more cushioning for this position, which is why we have this mattress a 4 here.
Back Sleepers
5/5
This bed is a great option for back sleepers as it provides sufficient support and allows proper spine alignment. The combination of foams and spring coils adapts to the curve of your lower back, preventing the pressure from building up. Plus, the bed’s firmness prevents the sleepers from sinking into the layers, promoting a healthy alignment.
Stomach Sleepers
4/5
The Leesa Original Hybrid is a medium-firm mattress, so it should provide enough support for lightweight and most average-size stomach sleepers. However, exclusive stomach sleepers who weigh significantly more may want a firmer bed to keep their midsection from dipping, which is why we scored it at a 4.
Combination Sleepers
5/5
The Leesa Original Hybrid is a great match for combination sleepers because it follows the body’s natural curve in all sleeping positions. The bed is medium-firm, which is the most universal feel for multiple sleep positions. Also, repositioning should be simple because the bed has enough bounce from the spring coils and poly foam.
Couples
4/5
The bed has two foam layers and pocketed coils, which should absorb movement so that partners don’t disturb one another. Also, this Leesa has good edge support thanks to the strong perimeter coils, allowing couples to use the entire surface of the bed. We gave it a 4 because couples may still feel some motion from the coils, although not enough to disturb rest.
Heavy Sleepers
3/5
Although the Leesa Original Hybrid may work for some heavier individuals, such as those who sleep on their side, most people weighing more than 230 pounds will want a firmer bed. If you weigh more, you may find the Leesa lacking in the support department, especially if you’re a stomach or back sleeper.
Lightweight Sleepers
4/5
Lightweight sleepers should find the Leesa Original Hybrid comfortable for most sleeping positions. The bed has two foam layers that don’t need much weight to activate, meaning that it’s suitable even for lighter-than-average sleepers. However, lightweight side sleepers may find the bed too firm, which is why we rated it a 4 here.
Average Weight Sleepers
4/5
Average-weight sleepers should find the Leesa Original Hybrid mattress comfortable in most sleeping positions. The mattress combines coils with two comfort layers to deliver a balance of pressure relief and support to suit average-weight side and back sleepers. Average-weight stomach sleepers closer to 230 pounds are likely to prefer a firmer bed.
Overall Value
Our Verdict
After putting the Leesa Hybrid through a series of tests, we’re happy to report that we are fans of this mattress. We like its bouncier, medium-firm feel, which is why we think this mattress is a fantastic match for combination sleepers. Generally, a medium-firm feel is ideal for combination sleepers because it’s the most adaptable for multiple positions. This is complemented by the bed’s quick-responding poly foam and coils, making it easier for combination sleepers to adjust during the night.
We also recommend the Leesa Original Hybrid for back and side sleepers, who often do best with medium-firm beds that give them the right balance of pressure relief and support.
While we don’t recommend this mattress for most heavyset individuals, heavier side sleepers could try out the bed to see if they like it since the memory foam will deliver good cushioning.
