Our Helix Moonlight Mattress Review for 2024

Last Updated on September 25, 2023

Written by Natalie G.

Helix has a variety of high-quality bed-in-a-box mattresses that will ship right to your door with easy setup. The Helix Moonlight is one of their softest models. Unlike some softer mattresses, this one is a hybrid, so it still has some bounce, making it a great combination for several types of sleepers.

In this in-depth Helix Moonlight review, we’ll cover who this bed should work well for and who it won’t. We’ll discuss qualities like firmness, construction, support, pressure relief, and more. We’ll also compare this mattress to some that are similar, so by the end, you’ll know if the Helix Moonlight is the right mattress for you.

Who We Recommend The Helix Moonlight For:

  • Hot sleepers – The Helix Moonlight was designed with cooling in mind. It starts with the Soft Touch design cover, which is made to be breathable and cool to the touch. The cooling continues down into the support layer with breathable, individually-wrapped coils.

  • Back and side sleepers – Lightweight back sleepers should get the support and pressure relief they need with this softer mattress, as well as lightweight and average-weight side sleepers.

  • Those with joint pain – This mattress is on the softer side for a Helix, which makes it cushioning and pressure-relieving for those with joint pain. This will be especially useful for side sleepers with hip or shoulder discomfort.

Who We Don’t Recommend The Helix Moonlight For:

  • People who prefer all-foam beds – If you love that sinking-in feeling that comes with memory foam, this bed will likely feel too bouncy for you. It may be soft, but you’ll still feel “on top of” rather than “in” the Helix Moonlight.

  • Stomach sleepers – Stomach sleepers need a particularly firm mattress in order to support their hips and keep the spine in alignment. Instead of this softer mattress, we recommend that stomach sleepers look for something firmer.

  • Heavyweight people – People who weigh 300 pounds or more will likely find this mattress too soft and not supportive enough. Instead, these people should look at beds specifically made for heavy sleepers.

First Impressions: Firmness & Feel

Firmness Scale: 6/10

Please remember that firmness is a subjective characteristic and your shape will dictate how you experience a bed. A heavier person whose weight can more easily push through softer comfort and support layers may experience a bed as softer than a lightweight person. The way you are shaped could also play a role here. Consider your weight, shape, and size when evaluating firmness scores.

On the Sleep Advisor mattress firmness scale, in which 1 is the softest feel and 10 is the firmest, the Helix Moonlight rates at a 6 out of 10. This makes it a medium-firm mattress, which is a good fit for many sleepers.

However, because of the softer comfort layers in the Moonlight, it is going to feel more plush and cushioning. The coils beneath will provide support and bounce, but still, some sleepers over 300 pounds or those who need more support will want to look for something firmer.

How Does It Feel?

The Helix Moonlight has a surprising amount of bounce for a bed that otherwise feels soft. Unlike some soft-feeling beds that you’ll sink right into, this one still feels supportive and you should have no trouble changing positions or getting up off the bed.

That said, we did notice that it doesn’t have the most advanced spinal support. For people with back pain, you can upgrade this mattress to the Luxe version with zoned lumbar support.

What We Like About the Helix Moonlight

  • It is bouncy – Many softer mattresses can leave you feeling “stuck” in them. While the Helix Moonlight is soft, it should still be easy to change positions – a positive feature for combination sleepers and those with limited mobility.

  • The cooling features – This mattress has a breathable cover and coils that create a cool, airy feel. If you sleep very hot, you can also upgrade to the GlacioTex™ Cooling Cover.

  • Upgrade option – Zoned lumbar support, a more cooling cover, and a pillow top are an easy click away with this mattress when you upgrade to the Luxe version. Plus, the Luxe comes with a 5-year longer warranty.

Our Helix Moonlight Complaints

  • It doesn’t work for all sleeping positions – Stomach sleepers and some heavier back sleepers will find this mattress to be too soft and not supportive enough.

  • It doesn’t accommodate all body types – People over 300 pounds and some average-weight people will find this mattress too soft, which means they won’t feel supported enough.

  • Not the best motion isolation – This means that when your partner moves at night, you’re more likely to feel it. The lack of motion isolation is because the Helix Moonlight is on the bouncier side.

Testing the Helix Moonlight Mattress: How it Performed

When we tested the Helix Moonlight Mattress, there were specific features we were measuring so we could determine who we think should consider this mattress. These features include cooling, motion isolation, bounce, and edge support. We also test how supportive and pressure-relieving the mattress is when we lie in different sleep positions.

Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types

According to Helix, the Helix Moonlight is designed to support up to 500 pounds per side of the mattress or 1,000 pounds total. This is true for sizes Twin, Full, Queen, and larger. It’s important to remember that just because the Helix Moonlight can support this much weight, that doesn’t necessarily mean it will be the best mattress for heavyweight people. You’ll also want to keep your sleeping position in mind to see if this mattress is a good fit.

WeightSide Sleepers
Back Sleepers
Stomach Sleepers
Lightweight Sleepers (-130 lbs)★★★★★★★☆☆
Average-Weight Sleepers (130-230 lbs)★★★★★☆☆☆☆
Heavyweight Sleepers (+230 lbs)★★☆☆☆☆☆☆☆

Side Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight side sleepers should love this mattress. It should feel cushioning and pressure relieving on the hips and shoulders.
  • Average Weight Sleepers – Average-weight people should also find this mattress soft enough to comfortably sleep on their sides.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavyweight side sleepers under 300 pounds could benefit from the soft comfort layers on top, though those who weigh over 300 pounds might push through these layers and only feel the firm support layer beneath, creating pressure on the shoulders and hips.

Back Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight back sleepers will likely get enough support from the Helix Moonlight since they won’t press as far into the comfort layers, thus keeping their spine in neutral alignment.
  • Average Weight Sleepers – Those on the lighter end of this weight category will still feel supported by this cushioning mattress, but some average-weight back sleepers will want something firmer and more supportive.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – This mattress will likely feel too soft for heavyweight back sleepers. The lack of support here could cause misalignment in the spine, leading to low back problems.

Stomach Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Unless you are very petite, this mattress will not be firm enough to sleep on your stomach.
  • Average Weight Sleepers – Average-weight stomach sleepers will feel their hips dip down into this mattress, throwing their spine out of alignment.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – This mattress will be way too soft and not supportive enough for heavyweight stomach sleepers.

Pressure Relief & Pain

Overall, we think that the Helix Moonlight provides excellent pressure relief for those who are lighter or average-weight. With its soft comfort layers on top, people under 300 pounds or so should sink in just the right amount to feel sensitive areas like the hips and shoulders cradled. However, they should not sink so far down that they’ll bump up against the more solid support layer beneath.

Back Pain – If you deal with back pain, this mattress should work fine if you’re very petite, but it will be too soft for most average-weight sleepers with back pain. Instead, we’d recommend a firmer mattress with more advanced support for back pain.
Hip Pain – For side sleepers, this mattress does a great job easing hip pain since it is soft and comfortable to sink into. However, stomach sleepers and heavier back sleepers will find that it makes hip pain worse, as the hips will sink too far down into the mattress.
Shoulder Pain – This is an excellent mattress for those who typically experience shoulder pain sleeping on their sides. Often, this is caused by a mattress that’s too hard, but the Helix Moonlight will be soft and cushioning against the shoulders.

Support

All the mattresses in the Helix line feature a support layer made up of individually-wrapped coils. This, plus the soft comfort layers in the Helix Moonlight, should provide a good amount of lifting for sleepers who don’t need advanced lumbar support.

That said, this mattress is more standard in comparison to some enhanced mattresses with added lumbar support, and it is too soft to be supportive for sleepers who weigh more. You can upgrade this mattress to the Luxe version, which will have zoned lumbar support. However, the Luxe will also be softer because of its added pillow top, so we don’t recommend the Luxe for heavier sleepers either.

Motion Transfer

Motion transfer reflects how much movement will be felt on one side of the bed when somebody moves on another side of the bed. This isn’t an important consideration for solo sleepers or people who aren’t easily woken up, but it’s something you want to think about if you share a bed or are a light sleeper.

Since this mattress is bouncier than other mattresses, it will have more transfer. This means you’re more likely to notice when your partner moves or gets up in the middle of the night.

Temperature Regulation / Cooling

Julia Forbes testing how fast a mattress cools down
Julia Forbes, our lead product tester, testing a mattress’s cooling capabilities.

Lots of people get hot at night while they’re sleeping and could benefit from a high-quality cooling mattress. Fortunately, the Helix Moonlight has several cooling properties. First, the Soft Touch design cover is naturally breathable and cooling, and you can easily upgrade to a GlacioTex™ Cooling Cover if needed.

Second, the innerspring layer allows air to pass through, creating a breathable, non-stuffy-feeling bed. If you are particularly worried about staying cool, though, you can upgrade to the Luxe, which has a few more cooling features.

Performance for Couples

Most couples are looking for a bed with very little motion transfer, perhaps some bounce, great edge support, and cooling properties

This mattress has a few of these things, making it generally a good bed for couples. While it does have some motion transfer, the bounciness of the mattress also makes it a good bed for some sexually-active couples who prefer this feature. It has cooling properties and great edge support since the edges are reinforced. This means the entire surface of the bed can be used – a plus for couples sharing space on the bed.

Preference-based Features

Excellent Edge Support

This mattress may be on the softer side, but the edges along its sides are reinforced with pocketed coils. This means the mattress will be more durable than some others, will be less likely to sag over time, and its entire surface can be used comfortably. For edge support along all four sides of the mattress, you can upgrade to the Luxe.

Made in the USA

If you like to shop locally, you’ll appreciate Helix’s U.S.-based manufacturing; all Helix mattresses are custom-made in the United States.

Bed-in-a-box

This mattress will be delivered to your door in a box and shipping is free. Setup should be easy and only take about 15 minutes total, including removing the packaging and placing it on the bed.

Adjustable Base Compatible

This mattress should work with most adjustable bases and frames, though Helix specifies that your mattress should have a platform or slat-based support. If slatted, the slates should be no further than 5 inches apart. Do not use a traditional box spring with your Helix mattress.

Construction: What’s Inside the Helix Moonlight?

The Helix Moonlight is a hybrid mattress, so it is made up of layers of soft foam as well as a support layer of innerspring coils. The mattress itself measures 11.5 inches tall unless you upgrade to the Luxe, which includes a pillow top and is 13.5 inches tall. We’ll take you through each layer, one by one.

  • The surface of this mattress is their Soft Touch design cover, and it is smooth and cool to the touch. For extra cooling, you can easily upgrade to the GlacioTex™ Cooling Cover.
  • Beneath the cover is the comfort layer, which is made from a latex-foam alternative that feels soft and contouring.
  • Moving further down is a transition layer, which is a bit firmer. This unit should provide some ergonomic support but still feel cushioning.
  • The support layer consists of up to 950 individually-wrapped steel coils. This layer gives the bed its bounce, support, and breathability.
  • At the bottom is a final base layer made from DuraDense foam. This keeps the mattress supported and durable.

If you decide to upgrade to the Luxe version of this mattress, there are two extra layers: a plush pillow top layer on top, as well as an extra layer of support foam. Additionally, the innerspring layer contains more coils, and they are designed with zoned support to focus on supporting your lumbar area.

Unboxing & Off-Gassing

The Helix Moonlight will arrive in a box and should take about 10-15 minutes to unbox and set up. We recommend doing this with two people because a Queen will weigh 100 pounds, and if you upgrade to the Luxe, it will weigh 115 pounds.

Once you’ve completely unboxed the mattress and set it on the bed, we recommend letting it sit for about 48 hours in a well-ventilated room before dressing it. Like many bed-in-a-box mattresses with foam, this one will have a chemical smell, but it’s normal and should dissipate within about 48 hours.

Certifications

  • CertiPUR-US® certified – The foams in this bed are CertiPUR-US® certified. CertiPUR-US® is a third-party program that ensures the foams meet rigorous health and safety standards. This means they don’t contain harmful substances like ozone depleters, PBDEs, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and phthalates. They should also have low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.

Coupons, Trials, Warranties, and Shipping

  • Shipping – Helix ships their mattresses for free within the United States. Canadian orders will incur a customs tax and a shipping fee of 250 dollars per mattress.
  • Trial – You can keep this product for 100 nights to make sure it’s your dream mattress, and if it isn’t, the company will refund your money.
  • Warranty – There is a warranty on this mattress for 10 years.
  • Return Policy – Helix asks that you try out your mattress for 30 nights. If you don’t like it after that, you can return it for a full refund before your 100-night trial expires. You’ll just need to contact the company to pick up your mattress and receive a refund.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Helix mattresses sag?

Helix mattresses are built to be durable with their support layer of steel coils, which are reinforced around the edges. Sags or impressions shouldn’t form in a Helix mattress for a long time, though the company advises you use a base with slats no further than 5 inches apart to ensure this.

How long do Helix mattresses last?

Helix mattresses should last around 10 years, and the company offers a 10-year warranty for most Helix mattresses. The Luxe models, however, come with a 15-year warranty.

Is the Helix Moonlight good for side sleepers?

Yes, the Moonlight is good for side sleepers. Side sleepers need more cushioning and less firmness so that their shoulders and hips don’t feel jammed against the mattress, and as it’s a softer bed, the Moonlight should work nicely for this group.

What happens if I don’t like my Helix mattress?

If you’re unhappy with your mattress at any point during your 100-night sleep trial, reach out to a team member at Helix to set up your return. To do this, go to their website and click the “Help” bubble in the bottom right corner of your screen. They’ll arrange mattress pickup and refund you in full once the mattress is removed.

Overall Summary

The Helix Moonlight is an excellent mattress for side sleepers, lightweight sleepers, and people who prefer a mattress that feels softer. It’s also a good fit for people who want a quality mattress at a competitive price point.

Side Sleepers

5/5

Side sleepers should appreciate this mattress’s softer feel, as it will contour to the shoulder and hips, relieving pressure from these sensitive areas. In particular, side sleepers of light to average weight will benefit from the top comfort layers of this mattress.

Back Sleepers

4/5

Back sleepers who prefer a softer-feeling mattress should enjoy the Helix Moonlight. The comfort layers are designed to contour the body, but the layer of coils should support the spine. If you need extra lumbar support, consider upgrading to the Luxe. If you are a heavyweight back sleeper, though, you should look at a firmer mattress.

Stomach Sleepers

1/5

Stomach sleepers need a firm mattress to prevent the hips from dipping down and throwing the spine out of alignment. We believe this mattress is too soft for almost all stomach sleepers. If you are a stomach sleeper, you’ll likely do better with a firmer Helix model like the Midnight.

Combination Sleepers

3/5

The Helix Moonlight has more bounce than other Helix models, which is a good thing for combination sleepers who need to change positions throughout the night with ease. There will be no feeling “stuck in” this Helix model. However, it is limiting because it isn’t the best for stomach sleepers or back sleepers who prefer a firmer mattress.

Couples

3/5

This mattress has great edge support, making the entire surface usable. It also has a good amount of bounce, which is preferable for some sexually-active couples. What it lacks, though, is good motion isolation – meaning you will probably be able to feel your partner move at night, which is why it earned a 3 out of 5 here.

Heavy Sleepers

2/5

Significantly heavier sleepers need a firmer and more supportive mattress than the Moonlight. Side sleepers under 300 pounds may still appreciate this mattress’s pressure relief, though those over 300 pounds will likely press down into the hard support layer, leading to discomfort. Instead, we recommend the Helix Plus for heavyweight sleepers.

Lightweight Sleepers

4/5

Lighter-than-average sleepers should feel comfortable on this more plush mattress and might consider upgrading to the Luxe version if they want an even softer feel. Lightweight side and back sleepers should feel both comfortable and supported here, but the Moonlight could be too soft for lightweight stomach sleepers.

Average-Weight Sleepers

4/5

This is a good mattress for average-weight side sleepers in particular and many average-weight back sleepers. If you prefer a slightly firmer mattress, though, we recommend the Helix Midnight; and if you are an average-weight stomach sleeper, we’d go with the Helix Dawn.

Overall Value

4/5

Compared to many similar hybrid bed-in-a-box mattresses, the Helix Moonlight is a great value. Helixes come with a 10-year warranty. While this is less than some other brands’ lifetime warranties, it should work just fine for the lifespan of the bed. The bed also features durable materials and a 100-night sleep trial that adds to its overall value.

Our Verdict

Helix has a variety of mattresses, from soft to firm and affordable to luxurious. The Helix Moonlight is one of the softer and more affordable models, and like all Helixes, it is made with high-quality materials and is built to last.

The innerspring layer gives this hybrid mattress a bouncy and airy feel, whereas the top comfort layers are soft and cushioning, making this an ideal mattress for side sleepers, lightweight sleepers, hot sleepers, and average-weight sleepers who like a softer-feeling mattress.

However, it isn’t a good fit for those who weigh over 300 pounds or people who sleep on their stomachs.
