What could be worse for your spine and sleeping posture than a mattress that sags? If the compression under your body is too deep to support your weight adequately, you could be waking up with back and neck pain, regardless of your preferred sleeping position.
Sagging occurs for various reasons, but most commonly due to poor-quality construction. If not, your mattress is likely not designed to carry your weight, which is why you notice sagging more than when it was new. Luckily, not all mattresses sag, at least not as quickly, so there’s a chance to find one that can serve you for years, offering the same quality and comfort as time passes.
In this article, we’ll cover some of the best mattresses that won’t sag and discuss what we found that makes them worth mentioning. We’ll also discuss factors to consider when buying a mattress if sagging is your number one concern.

Why the Helix Midnight Earned Editor’s Pick
When testing this bed, our reviewer, Emma, pointed out that the Helix Midnight is a killer value for the money. The mattress has reinforced steel coils around the perimeter, holding its edges so that they don’t collapse should you sit or sleep near this area. Sleepers shouldn’t feel like falling off the bed, which is a win for co-sleepers and single individuals who like to spread out across the entire mattress.
The Helix is a hybrid, so it combines foam with coils, offering decent bounce and pressure relief, but also motion isolation that partners with different sleeping habits should appreciate.
What’s the Helix Midnight Made Of?
The Helix Midnight mattress is 11.5 inches tall and has four layers along with a top and bottom cover. The top one is a Soft Touch cover, or you can choose GlacioTex™, which is more suitable for hot sleepers.
Under the cover is a layer of Memory Plus Foam designed to contour the body and relieve pressure. Next, is a layer of high-grade poly foam, followed by an 8-inch coil unit. The base is made from Dura Dense Foam and is meant to provide additional support so that the upper layers don’t sag.
What We Liked
- Combination of motion isolation and bounce – This bed has both coils and memory foam, so you can expect a responsive feel that makes it easy to get in and out of bed while still getting plenty of motion isolation to prevent movement from transferring across the mattress. As Emma said, this makes this a great option for people who share their bed, whether that’s with a partner or the family dog.
- Reinforced edges – The Helix Midnight is an excellent option if you want a mattress that doesn’t sag, particularly along the perimeter, as it has reinforced edges. You may feel slight compression, but this shouldn’t make you feel like you could fall off the bed. As Emma pointed out, the perimeter holds up well enough to support you sleeping right up on the edge of the bed.
Potential Drawbacks
- Not for petite sleepers – Petite sleepers, especially those who like sleeping on their side, may prefer a mattress that feels a bit softer. Sleepers under 130 pounds may find this medium-firm mattress even firmer as they don’t weigh enough to activate the comfort layers.
- Not as noticeable of a hug – Although it contains memory foam, the Helix Midnight doesn’t hug your body the way other beds with this material do. Memory foam should help relieve pressure, and it does feel a bit contouring around the sensitive areas, but if you’re looking for deep sinkage and a hugging sensation, this bed is not it.
Customer Reviews of The Helix Midnight
The Helix Midnight rates 4.5 stars out of 5 on Helix’s website. The main negative is that reviewers tend to find it too soft for their liking and feel as though they’re sinking. But overall, users say they’re getting a great nights’ sleep and some pain relief.

Why the Saatva Classic Earned Best Innerspring Mattress That Won’t Sag
The Saatva Classic features not one but two coil units to provide excellent support and reduce the risk of sagging. The Saatva also benefits from the addition of memory for added comfort.
This mattress has zoned support in the upper coil layer, offering enhanced lumbar support for back sleepers. On top of that, it has quite some bounce coming from the two coil units, although the upper comfort layers dampen some of the movement to enhance motion isolation.
What’s the Saatva Classic Made Of?
Shoppers can choose from two options when it comes to height: 11.5 and 14.5 inches. Both models have the same layers. The difference is in the height of each layer.
The construction starts with a 3-inch Euro top that provides decent cushioning and contouring. Underneath is the Lumbar Zone® Active Spinal Wire combined with CertiPUR-US®-certified memory foam, followed by the first layer of pocketed coils. Next is the coil base unit with a high-density rail for better edge support.
What We Liked
Excellent support – Support’s the name of the game here, as Julia pointed out. The mattress has two coil units working with a Euro top and memory foam to provide plenty of support across the entire surface. On top of that, it has reinforced edge support for those who like sleeping near the perimeter.
Ready to use – Saatva ships this mattress ready-to-use, which means it’s not shipped in a box. Although the packaging may be a bit cumbersome, the mattress isn’t compressed, so you don’t have to wait for it to expand. In addition, the company offers free in-house, or as we sometimes call it, white glove, delivery. If you choose this option, you can expect a team of professionals to show up with your new mattress, remove it from the packaging, and install it for you.
Potential Drawbacks
Not for extra hot sleepers – Although the Saatva Classic has two coil units and is rather breathable, it’s not necessarily the most cooling mattress out there. Julia said she felt her body temperature was maintained, but she didn’t feel any extra cooling. For this reason, we wouldn’t recommend it for extremely hot sleepers who tend to overheat and sweat while sleeping.
Not the Best Motion Isolation – This Saatva bed is springy and responsive due to its two coil units. Although the mattress has a plush Euro top and memory foam, the coils will carry movement from one side of the bed to the other. As Julia said, moving from side to side causes big shakes, which means the Saatva Classic may not be the best for co-sleepers and partners with different sleeping schedules.
Customer Reviews of The Saatva Classic
The Saatva Classic rates 4.8 stars out of 5 on Saatva’s website. One negative aspect customers found with the Saatva Classic mattress is that it may feel too firm for some users, while a notable advantage is its high-quality materials, providing durability and support.

Why the WinkBed EcoCloud Earned Best Eco-Friendly Mattress That Won’t Sag
The WinkBed EcoCloud mattress is hypoallergenic, non-toxic, and resistant to dust mites and mold. On top of that, the mattress is certified by various organizations, featuring OEKO-TEX100® and Rainforest Alliance certifications. Talalay latex is the star of this bed as it’s antibacterial and hypoallergenic, on top of being breathable. Additionally, the cover is made from organic cotton and New Zealand wool.
What’s the WinkBed EcoCloud Made Of?
This 12.5-inch bed has organic cotton and New Zealand wool cover, followed by a 4-inch layer of Talalay latex. The latex in this bed has an open-cell structure, so it’s breathable and bouncy.
Next comes a layer of coils, providing zoned support to the heaviest areas. Finally, the bed has a foam base and reinforced edges with ExtraEdge™ Anit-Sag Support coils that help prevent it from sagging.
What We Liked
Versatile feel – As Stuart pointed out, this bed should provide a versatile feel that suits side, back, and stomach sleepers, depending on their body weight. The mattress has zoned support and is bouncy enough, so combination sleepers shouldn’t feel stuck when switching positions. In addition, it provides a nice balance of pressure relief and support for side and back sleepers as well.
Springy surface – Talalay latex is naturally springy, so you can expect the EcoCloud mattress to be quite bouncy. The surface is really responsive, as Stuart said, because the Talalay latex comes first, right on top of the coils that are also bouncy. The bounce is excellent for combination sleepers as it helps with repositioning. In addition, we think this could be a good selection for sexually active couples, adding a bit of pushback support.
Potential Drawbacks
Not very hugging – As our review team noticed, the EcoCloud mattress lacks foams and other materials that would give it more of a hugging feel. This bed is bouncy and will make you feel like sleeping ‘on top of’ it rather than ‘in’ it. With that said, it provides enough support, but you may not sink deep enough to get that cozy, hugging feel known for memory foam.
Motion transfer – Although the WinkBed EcoCloud did well on our motion transfer tests, given that it’s a bouncy bed, some people may prefer something with better motion isolation. As Stuart said, the cup wiggles but doesn’t fall, meaning that it does good for a bouncy bed, but you may want more if your partner is a restless sleeper or you have different sleeping habits.
Customer Reviews of The WinkBed EcoCloud
At 4.8 out of 5 stars on WinkBed’s site, the EcoCloud has an overwhelmingly positive response. Customers appreciate the eco-friendly materials used in the WinkBed EcoCloud mattress but have noted that the price point may be higher than some competitors.

Why the Signature Hybrid Earned Best Mattress That Won’t Sag for Combination Sleepers
The Signature Hybrid mattress from Brooklyn Bedding is available in three firmness options, but the Medium feel should cater to combination sleepers the best. As Emma, who tested this bed, said, the Signature Hybrid is responsive with a comfortable yet supportive feel. The construction makes it easy to adjust positions, so it works well for those with ever-changing sleeping preferences.
What’s the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Made Of?
This hybrid has two of the company’s proprietary foams combined with Ascension® coils. The first layer is made from TitanFlex™ foam infused with TitaniumGel™ for better temperature regulation. This layer has an open-cell structure that also helps keep the surface cool. Next comes a layer of VariFlex™ foam acting as a transition layer above the Ascension® coils. Additionally, the edges are reinforced with the same coils to prevent sagging.
What We Liked
- Motion isolation – Stuart, who also tested the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid, pointed out he was surprised at how well this bed isolates motion. Although hybrids don’t always do as well in this department, the Signature Hybrid does, mostly thanks to its two layers of foam above the coils.
- Excellent edge support – This bed is unlikely to sag as it feels well-made all across the surface. It has Ascension® coils in the support layer with the same coils going around the perimeter. Sleepers should feel well-supported even when sitting and sleeping near the edge, even more so with the Firm model.
Potential Drawbacks
- May be too simple for some – When you hear Brooklyn Bedding, you may expect an extraordinary mattress, and while this bed is amazing, it lacks the bells and whistles some shoppers might prefer. As Stuart pointed out, this bed may leave you wanting more if you’re looking for a mattress with high-tech add-ons and tons of cooling features.
- Not enough cushioning – Side sleepers may want a softer mattress that can provide more cushioning and pressure relief. The Medium model we tested may feel even firmer for side sleepers under 130 pounds. However, there’s also a softer model that may work better for side sleepers who like a bit more cushioning.
Customer Reviews of The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid
On Brooklyn Bedding’s website, the Brooklyn Signature has 4.7 out of 5 stars. The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid mattress receives praise from customers for its versatility with different firmness options, but some have mentioned that it may produce slight noise when bearing weight.

Why the Bear Original Earned Best Mattress That Won’t Sag for Back Pain
The Bear Original mattress was designed to help athletes and active people. For an additional fee, you can outfit it with a Celliant® cover that is reportedly able to help with tissue recovery. In addition, it has a sturdy construction that promotes support and helps keep your spine neutral to prevent back pain. Mark, our tester, said the Bear Original feels firm enough for back and stomach sleeping, which are the two positions that put the most pressure on your back.
What’s the Bear Original Made Of?
The first thing that stands out is the cover, which is made from botanically sourced and breathable TENCEL™ fibers. You can also pay more to add a Celliant® cover, which Bear claims converts your body heat into infrared light to help with recovery. Underneath, is the 2-inch layer of memory foam infused with gel graphite for additional cooling. Next comes the 2-inch transition layer made of poly foam, followed by 6 inches of poly foam acting as the base.
What We Liked
Motion isolation – This mattress is made entirely out of foam, which makes it a great option for couples and co-sleepers. The foam layers do such a good job of absorbing motion that it’s unlikely you’d feel your partner’s tossing and turning, even if they’re a restless sleeper. This is also a plus for those who sleep with a child or a pet that may get in and out of bed multiple times during the night.
The supportive feel – Although we rated the mattress as medium-firm, some people may experience it as firmer or softer, depending on their body weight. Nonetheless, the Bear Original feels sturdier than most all-foam beds, so we think it would hold up well throughout the years, more so thanks to its good edge support to prevent sagging along the sides.
Potential Drawbacks
Not for side sleepers – Both Stuart and Mark, who tested the Bear Original, agreed that some side sleepers might find this bed too firm. Mark pointed out he was comfortable but may not be able to sleep throughout the night in this position, and Stuart agreed he would like a bit more sinkage.
No bounce – Some people don’t like bouncy beds, but if you do, you may not like the Bear Original. This all-foam mattress excels in motion isolation, but this is also why it doesn’t have any bounce. Sleepers are unlikely to feel stuck in this mattress, but there’s none of the bounce you’d get from a mattress with coils.
Customer Reviews of The Bear Original
On Bear’s website, the Bear Original has more than 10,000 reviews and an average rating of 4.3 out of 5 stars. Customers appreciate the Bear Original mattress for its cooling features, yet some express concerns about an initial off-gassing odor.

Why the Nectar Earned Best Value Mattress That Won’t Sag
We think this all-foam mattress delivers excellent durability, comfort, and pressure relief, all for a price that’s more affordable. The Nectar Memory Foam mattress sports gel-infused and certified foam, a slow-sinking feel, and a mid-range firmness that should fit most sleepers. Although some heavier sleepers may think it’s too soft, average-weight and lightweight people should feel well-supported, even along the edges of the bed.
What’s Nectar Mattress Made Of?
This Nectar bed is made entirely out of foam, with a construction that starts with a polyester and nylon blend cover. The cover also features a heat-wicking technology to promote cooling for those who sleep hot.
Next, is a 2-inch layer of gel-infused memory foam that is quilted to the cover to provide additional cooling and plushness for pressure relief. This is followed by a 3-inch layer of soft premium foam and 7 inches of conventional foam at the base.
What We Liked
- Cozy memory foam – This bed has that well-known, slow-sinking feel you can only get from memory foam. The material is known for its slow response, allowing enough sinkage to relieve pressure and create that cozy feel. As Emma pointed out, if you don’t like sinking into the mattress but would rather sleep on top of it, this bed may not be up your alley. Although it feels soft and cozy, it also offers decent support along the edges, so don’t expect the perimeter to sag.
- Budget-friendly price tag – This Nectar mattress has a lot to offer, from plenty of pressure relief to sturdy edges, all for a decent price. Although it’s not the cheapest bed out there, it offers plenty of value for the quality of the materials.
Potential Drawbacks
- No bounce – All-foam mattresses don’t typically have as much bounce as hybrid and innerspring models. However, some do have a somewhat responsive feel, more so if they feature some latex within the construction. This isn’t the case with the Nectar, so if you want a bouncy bed, this isn’t it.
- Not for stomach sleepers – Most stomach sleepers, but especially those over 230 pounds, may find this bed a bit too soft. We think its mid-range firmness should work for most sleeping positions, but stomach sleepers need extra support in the hip area, and the Nectar may not deliver being that it doesn’t have any coils.
Customer Reviews of The Nectar Memory Foam
With thousands of reviews on Nectar’s website, the Nectar mattress has an average 4.8 out of 5 stars. One common customer complaint about the Nectar mattress is its longer-than-average break-in period, while many customers praise its excellent value and comfort once fully settled.

Why the Plank Earned Best Firm Mattress That Won’t Sag
The Plank mattress is a dual-sided bed, but both sides are on the firm side. More precisely, we rate one as firm and the other as extra-firm, so you can get an idea of how the mattress feels. This may not work for lightweight side sleepers, but we think it could be great for heavy sleepers and even average-weight stomach sleepers who like a firmer sleep surface. Additionally, it should provide excellent support for those with back pain and is unlikely to sag due to its firm construction.
What’s the Plank Firm Mattress Made Of?
The Firm side has a 1.5-inch quilted cover, whereas the Extra-Firm side has a .75-inch quilted top. If you look at the bed with the Firm side up, you’ll find a 2-inch layer of the company’s TitanFlex™ foam. The second layer is a 7-inch dense foam that acts as the base in this case. If you flip the bed, the 7-inch layer comes first, giving that side its firmer feel.
What We Liked
- Enhanced support – Although the Plank Firm mattress is made entirely out of foam, we feel it excels at support, even without any coils. The bed’s firmer feel is excellent for heavy sleepers, including those who sleep on their stomach, as it provides enough support to prevent the hips from sinking. Plus, it offers excellent edge support for an all-foam mattress, so the perimeter is unlikely to sag either.
- Contouring quilted top – A mentioned, Plank Firm mattress should make you feel like you’re sleeping ‘on top of’ the bed rather than ‘in’ it. However, it has a quilted top on both sides of its flippable design to provide a bit of contouring. This may not be enough to relieve pressure for lightweight and even average-weight side sleepers but should do wonders for heavy sleepers sleeping on their back and stomach.
Potential Drawbacks
- Extra charge for the cooling cover – This mattress isn’t the most budget-friendly option, more so since the GlacioTex™ cooling cover comes at an additional charge. Hot sleepers will need to pay about 100 dollars more for the cooling cover if they want to enhance temperature regulation and ensure no overheating.
- No softer version – The Plank Firm is only available in these two firm options with its flippable design. Although this should work for many average-weight and heavyweight sleepers, it’s unlikely to be comfortable for lightweight sleepers, who would need something softer. Unfortunately, this mattress isn’t available in any softer firmness options, so they should look at an entirely different model.
Customer Reviews of The Plank Firm Mattress
On Plank’s website, the Plank Firm gets 4.8 out of 5 stars. Customers appreciate the Brooklyn Bedding Plank Firm mattress for its exceptional firmness, but some have found it to be too rigid for their comfort preferences.

Why the Emma Hybrid Comfort Earned Best Mattress That Won’t Sag for Couples
Our review team thought this bed was perfect for couples, as it excels across multiple categories important for those sharing a bed. First, it features great motion isolation, which is helpful for partners with different sleeping habits. If your partner tosses and turns all night or usually gets up before you, you should be able to sleep through that movement.
The Hybrid Comfort mattress also feels sturdy around the edges, so you can spread out as much as you want while feeling nicely supported along the perimeter. We think this durable mattress should last a long time without sagging or losing its shape.
What’s the Emma Hybrid Comfort Made Of?
The Hybrid Comfort mattress has a soft-to-the-touch, breathable top cover. Underneath is a layer of Airgocell® foam, an open-pored material that helps absorb motion while also dissipating heat. Two more layers of foam follow: a memory foam layer to promote motion isolation, and an HRX foam layer for support and firmness.
The innerspring unit consists of individually wrapped coils that target specific areas of the body with seven discrete support zones.
At the bottom, a sturdy base ensures stability for all 13 inches of the mattress. There’s even a bottom cover with anti-slip fabric that prevents the mattress from sliding around on your frame.
What We Liked
- Zoned support – The Emma Hybrid Comfort mattress has a spring layer with seven unique zones. These are designed to help prevent the heaviest body parts from sinking deeply, which would throw your spine out of alignment.
- Motion isolation – As we’ve noted, this bed has little motion transfer, especially for a hybrid mattress. The layers of foam balance out responsiveness while also keeping movement from traveling to the other side of the bed.
Potential Drawbacks
- Not much cradling – Although this bed has some foam layers, you’re unlikely to feel hugged or cradled by them since they’re on the firmer side. Most of our team felt like they were sleeping ‘on top of’ the mattress.
- Not the greenest – If you’re looking for an eco-conscious mattress, this may not be the best pick. Emma uses CertiPUR-US® certified foams, but none of its materials are considered fully natural or organic.
Customer Reviews of The Emma Hybrid Comfort
This is a fairly new mattress, so Emma’s site doesn’t have many reviews yet, but early customers already rate it an impressive 5 out of 5 stars. So far customers appreciate the Emma Hybrid Comfort mattress for its excellent motion isolation, but some have reported that it may have a slight initial off-gassing odor upon unboxing.

Why the Titan Plus Earned Best Mattress That Won’t Sag for Heavy People
The Titan Plus mattress is constructed with heavy people in mind. This is a hybrid with memory foam and coils working together to deliver a combination of support and pressure relief where you need them the most. The mattress has TitanCaliber™ coils that ensure sturdy support and no sagging, even with sleepers over 230 pounds.
What’s the Titan Plus Made Of?
The construction starts with a cotton cover, although there’s also an optional GlacioTex™ cover for those who need additional cooling. The mattress is 11 inches tall and has a combination of memory foam and coils.
First, there’s a quilted cover with an inch of gel memory foam that adapts to your body and cools the surface. Next, is a layer of TitanFlex™ foam that provides targeted pressure relief and responsiveness for easy repositioning. This is followed by a layer of TitanCaliber™ coils and 2 inches of high-density foam acting as the bed’s base.
What We Liked
- Strong construction – The Titan Plus has a sturdy construction built to support sleepers over 230 pounds and their partner. This bed can support up to 1,000 pounds, so it should be able to handle extra weight without sagging or showing any signs of wear and tear as quickly. The combination of premium materials and craftsmanship result in a quality mattress that should last many years. Plus, you have a lengthy trial to test how you like it.
- Plenty of pressure relief – Although this bed is a bit on the firm side, it still allows enough contouring to relieve pressure in the most sensitive areas. As Mark pointed out, there is little to no pressure buildup when lying on the side, so even heavy side sleepers who need a balance of pressure relief and support should feel comfortable enough.
Potential Drawbacks
- Not for petite sleepers – Heavy sleepers should have no trouble experiencing enough pressure relief, but anyone under 150 pounds is likely to find this mattress too firm to enjoy sleeping in any position, especially on the side. Side sleepers under 150 pounds are most likely to experience pressure buildup because they don’t weigh enough to activate the Titan’s comfort layers.
- No softer version – Titan Plus is made for heavier sleepers (with some average-weight-sleeper exceptions). With this said, those looking for a softer version of this bed will be left wanting more because the brand only makes the plus-size one that’s likely too firm for anyone under 150 pounds.
Customer Reviews of The Titan Plus Mattress
Users on Titan by Brooklyn Bedding’s site have given the Titan Plus a 4.7 out of 5 stars. Customers find the Titan Plus mattress to offer exceptional durability and support, but some mention that it might be too firm for those who prefer a softer feel.

Why the Puffy Original Earned Best Memory Foam Mattress That Won’t Sag
The Puffy Original mattress is made from cradling memory foam with a slow-sinking feeling that delivers plenty of pressure relief. Memory foam is among the most popular materials to go for if you’re after a slowly-responding mattress that cradles your curves and prevents pressure from building up. We feel the Puffy Original mattress delivers all you’d expect from a memory foam bed, more so with its versatile mid-range firmness.
What’s the Puffy Original Made Of?
The Puffy Original mattress has a removable and washable cover, which is always a plus for easier maintenance. Under the cover, you’ll find 2 inches of Cooling Cloud™ foam designed to adapt to your weight while providing pushback support for easy repositioning. Plus, it’s infused with gel to reduce heat buildup.
This is followed by another 2 inches of the Climate Comfort™ foam acting as a transition layer before the 6-inch Firm Core Support Foam.
What We Liked
- Excellent support – We rate this bed at 6.5 out of 10 on our firmness scale, placing this bed as a medium-firm option. We think the Puffy Original should provide enough support for lightweight and average-weight sleepers looking for optimal spine alignment. The foams in this bed create a cushioning mattress that delivers pressure relief while ensuring your spine is well-aligned.
- Cooling foams – This memory foam bed features the company’s proprietary materials, which means you’ll find unique memory foam that is unlikely to overheat. Puffy’s foams have gel infusions and a breathable structure that allows enough airflow to help heat dissipate. As such, it’s unlikely for your body heat to accumulate around you, even during the hottest nights.
Potential Drawbacks
- Not ideal for stomach sleepers – Stomach sleepers typically need more support around the hip area, so they seek extra-supportive mattresses. While the Puffy Original does offer excellent support, we don’t think it would perform as well for stomach sleepers over 130 pounds. Stomach sleepers above 130 pounds may find their hips sinking too deeply within the mattress, causing the spine to fall out of alignment, which can result in back and hip pain.
- No bounce – Not everyone is after a bouncy bed, so this doesn’t have to be a dealbreaker for you. However, it’s important to point out that the Puffy Original mattress lacks bounce. If you’re someone who prefers the feel of a bouncy bed, you might want a different option.
Customer Reviews of The Puffy Original
On Puffy’s site, the Puffy mattress ranks 5 out of 5 stars. Customers often praise the Puffy Original mattress for its exceptional pressure relief but some have noted that it might retain heat more than they prefer.

What is a Mattress That Won’t Sag?
A mattress that won’t sag is a type of mattress that has a sturdy construction that is unlikely to show signs of sagging as quickly. These beds are typically made from premium materials, featuring quality craftsmanship that ensures durability.
Although it’s a popular belief that only hybrid and innerspring beds can last as long without sagging because they have coils, this isn’t a hard-written rule. In other words, even memory foam beds can last without sagging if the foams are high-density and durable.
What to Look for In Mattresses That Don’t Sag
The first thing you should look for is durability and quality materials if you want a mattress that won’t sag. Sagging usually occurs due to weak materials compressing under the sleeper’s weight, and while some compressing is normal, it’s important that the bed returns to its original shape once you get up.
Type of Mattress
Innerspring Mattresses
Innerspring mattresses have coils in them, so they often sport good bounce and support. However, they’re not the best for pressure relief because they don’t have a thick comfort layer that would allow enough sinkage and cradling. Even with coils, innerspring mattresses can sag if the springs aren’t durable enough. For this reason, if you want an innerspring that doesn’t sag, you should ensure the mattress you go for has quality coils.
Hybrid Mattresses
Hybrid mattresses also have coils, but they’re different from innerspring beds in that they have multiple comfort layers on top. This mainly helps with pressure relief, but it also helps make a mattress taller and sturdier and, with that, less likely to sag. To ensure your hybrid doesn’t sag, try to find one with quality coils and high-density comfort layers, whether they’re made of memory foam or latex.
Memory Foam Mattresses
Memory foam mattresses can still be strong even without coils. These beds usually have a combination of memory foam and poly foam layers, whether it’s standard foam or proprietary materials. To ensure your memory foam mattress won’t sag, it’s best to look for high-density foams. The mattress doesn’t necessarily have to be on the firm side, but make sure the foams return to their original shape once you get out of bed.
Latex Mattresses
Latex mattresses are known to be more responsive and bouncier than memory foam beds. They bounce back into their original shape faster, so they’re less likely to sag. However, as it’s the case with other mattress types, make sure the latex mattress of your choice is made with quality materials.
Other Considerations When Shopping for a Mattress That Won’t Sag
Sleeping Position
Your sleeping position may affect how a mattress reacts to pressure and compression. For example, if a mattress is too soft for side sleeping, your shoulders and hips may cause it to sag in these areas. The same goes for any other position that the mattress may not be suitable for. If you’re a stomach or back sleeper, you want to avoid a bed that sags too much in the middle as this can lead to lower back issues.
Weight/Body Type of Sleepers
A mattress is likely to sag if you go over its weight capacity. For example, if it’s too soft to handle a person over 230 pounds, a heavy sleeper is likely to cause it to sag in the shoulder and hip areas. There’s no way to tell how soon a mattress will sag, but it could sag sooner rather than later if you put too much weight onto it.
For plus-size sleepers concerned about this, there are great brands out there that cater to heavier body types with mattresses that are made with denser, reinforced materials that are less likely to sag.
Firmness
Firmer beds may initially be less likely to sag, but if the materials aren’t of good quality, they could experience wear and tear sooner, which would eventually result in sagging. One thing to keep in mind is that some mattress firmnesses are more suitable for certain sleeping positions and body weights. For instance, if a person weighs over 230 pounds, they may prefer a firmer bed because a softer bed would likely sag under their weight.

Cooling
Cooling is an important factor to consider and although it doesn’t have much to do with sagging, it can make a difference when it comes to comfortable sleeping. Many mattresses have cooling features such as gel, copper, and graphite infusions, an open-cell structure (if it’s a memory foam or latex), a cool-to-the-touch cover, and different technologies that help with temperature regulation. One thing to point out is that hybrid and innerspring mattresses are typically cooler than memory foam because memory foam has a tendency to retain heat unless it has some type of cooling enhancement like gel or an open-cell structure.
Sleeping on a bed that doesn’t sag could also help you sleep cooler since you’re less likely to be enveloped in the layers, which could cause heat buildup.
Read more about cooling mattresses here.
Motion Isolation
Motion isolation is another common factor many sleepers look for, especially those who share their mattress with a partner, a child, or a pet. Motion isolation refers to the mattress’ ability to isolate movement coming from one side of the bed so that you don’t feel as much of it on the other side. Memory foam beds are usually the best at isolating motion whereas latex and innerspring mattresses don’t perform as well for this because they’re more responsive and bouncy, which means movement travels more easily.
Sex
Sexually active couples usually look for a bouncy bed that offers enough pushback support. However, there’s a fine line with this because too much bounce could also interfere with your ability to get a good night’s rest if your partner tosses and turns a lot when sleeping. Many mattresses can be good for sex, but it’s best to also pay attention to other factors as well such as motion isolation and firmness so that the bed works just as well for sleeping.
Pressure Relief
Pressure relief is always important, but more so if you usually prefer sleeping on your side. Side sleepers often put a lot of pressure on the hips and shoulders, so it’s a good thing to have a mattress that can relieve some of that tension. Look for a bed that allows enough cradling and sinkage to prevent pressure from building up without taking away from the support. Even with sinkage and pressure relief, you want enough support to keep the spine aligned.
More: Best Mattress for Pressure Relief
Edge Support
Many sleepers find edge support to be crucial when looking for a mattress that doesn’t sag. Edges are often the weakest part of a mattress, and they often sag more than the rest of the construction. Have you ever experienced sinking or sliding off of a bed when trying to sit near the edge? This happens with mattresses with poor edge support.
One way brands enhance edge support is by providing additional reinforcement along the perimeter. In the case of hybrids and innersprings, you can find higher-gauge coils around the edges, whereas memory foam and latex beds have higher-density foams in this area.
Budget
Budget is something we all have to think about when buying a new mattress, especially since many beds are quite pricey. The best thing you can do is to consider how much money you’re willing to spend on a mattress. Think about what you need from a mattress and set aside a budget. The good thing is that many brands offer discounts for holidays, Cyber Monday, and Black Friday.

Best Mattress That Won’t Sag FAQs
What type of mattress is least likely to sag?
All mattresses can sag depending on their construction and how you use them. However, low-quality mattresses are going to be more prone to sagging because they lack the durable, supportive materials to withstand regular use.
What causes a mattress to sag?
Most mattresses sag because their lifespan is coming to an end. Over time, your body and consistent sleeping habits will leave marks on your bed, but this may be only because it’s getting old rather than because it’s a low-quality mattress. However, jumping on a bed, sleeping on a mattress that’s not built for your body type, and poor-quality materials are also reasons why a mattress may sag.
How do I keep my mattress from sagging in the middle?
One of the best ways to prevent your mattress from sagging is to ensure the bed of your choice fits your body frame and preferred sleeping position. Rotating the mattress occasionally to even out the wear and tear across the entire surface of the bed can also help. You may also flip it if it has a flippable design. We also recommend avoiding jumping on a mattress as this can break down the materials faster.
