Who I’d Recommend the Birch For

  • Side and back sleepers – This mattress contains pressure-relieving latex, which is great for side sleepers who need relief around their hips and shoulders. Back sleepers will likely feel very comfortable on the Birch mattress due to the contour provided by the latex, while still receiving spinal support from the coils.

  • Couples – We recommend the Birch for couples because it has great edge support, so if you like to spread out from your partner in bed, you shouldn’t feel like you’re sliding off of the edge of the bed. Not only that, but this bed has a good amount of bounce, which can be appealing to sexually-active couples.

  • Environmentally-conscious shoppers – This mattress consists of organic wool and cotton, and it holds three eco-conscious certifications. The Talalay latex used in the bed is also eco-friendly. If you’re looking for a mattress that is better for the environment, this could be a wonderful option.

Who I’d Recommend the Avocado For

  • Folks who want lots of bounce – The Avocado mattress has quite a bit of bounce, which our reviewers noticed when testing this bed This bounce is partly due to the firmer Dunlop latex used, along with the zoned coils. Typically, people with limited mobility, combination sleepers, and sexually-active couples prefer a bed with a good amount of bounce. This way, they don’t feel stuck in their mattress, unable to easily move.

  • People who prefer traditional innerspring beds – The coiled layer in this mattress is similar to an innerspring mattress, so people who want a bed with an innerspring unit but still want some foam comfort will likely enjoy the feel of the Avocado hybrid.

  • Environmentally-conscious folks – Similar to the Birch mattress, we recommend the Avocado for eco-conscious shoppers. This bed is made of natural Dunlop latex, and organic cotton and wool. Additionally, this mattress has six eco-friendly certifications.

Comparing Birch vs Avocado: Top Similarities

  • Latex hybrids – Both the Avocado and Birch are hybrids that contain latex and innerspring coils.
  • Organic materials – The Avocado and Birch are both eco-friendly beds that contain organic and natural materials.
  • Medium-firm feel – We rated both of these mattresses at a 6.5 out of 10 on our firmness scale, which is a medium-firm level. Medium-firm beds can accommodate a wide variety of sleepers ranging in weight and preferred sleeping position.

Comparing Birch vs Avocado: Key Differences

  • Type of latex – The Birch mattress is made with Talalay latex, which is a lighter, softer latex compared to the Avocado’s Dunlop latex, which is firmer and more dense. The different types of latex used in these beds contribute to some of the slight differences we have found between them.
  • Springs – While both of these mattresses have an innerspring unit, the Avocado contains more springs than the Birch. This higher number of springs contributes to the Avocado’s slightly firmer feel compared to the Birch.
  • Price – The Birch and Avocado mattresses are both priced somewhat similarly. However, the Avocado is a little bit cheaper than the Birch in the Twin, Twin XL, Full, and Queen sizes, while the Birch is slightly cheaper in the King and Cali King sizes. Make sure you check the Birch and Avocado websites for the latest deals on each bed though as special discounts can make a difference.

Comparing Firmness, Support & Feel

Firmness

We rate mattress firmness on a scale from 1 to 10, with one being the softest. The Birch and Avocado are nearly identical in firmness, both earning a 6.5 rating, which is medium-firm. A medium-firm mattress is typically a good fit for a wide range of body weights and sleeping positions.

Due to the different types of latex, when we tested the Avocado mattress, it felt just slightly firmer than the Birch. However, when deciding between these two mattresses, we recommend that you consider other factors as well.

Support

For the most part, our reviewers felt supported in each sleeping position on both of these mattresses, regardless of their weight.

Our reviewers noted that the Birch bed’s coils provide lower back support, which is nice when lying on your back. The reinforced edge coils along the perimeter provide great edge support at the ends of the bed.

The Avocado mattress has zoned coils that provide more tailored support for the body, delivering extra lifting to the heavier areas. Similar to the Birch, the Avocado has reinforced edges as well.

Feel

As mentioned, the Avocado has zoned coils. As such, you should feel extra lifting in the heavier parts of your body, particularly the lower back and hips, and then softer support in lighter areas. The bed’s cover feels soft and breathable.

Birch’s mattress is topped with a soft cover that has wool beneath it, helping to keep the body temperature neutral. This soft feel pairs nicely with the pressure relief provided by the latex, working together to comfort the body.

Comparing Sinkage and Bounce

Both the Avocado and Birch mattresses foster a gentle cradle. Neither bed envelops you in as deep of a hug as a traditional memory foam mattress, but the latex in these hybrids still offers some cushioning.

The Avocado mattress doesn’t sink too much, nor does the Birch. Both of these beds are good options for heavier folks, couples, and people with limited mobility.

We found that the Avocado has a bit more bounce than Birch does. However, the Birch still has more bounce than a traditional memory foam mattress. Additionally, the Dunlop latex used in the Avocado mattress is firmer than the Talalay latex that Birch uses.

Comparing Motion Transfer

Minimal motion transfer is often more helpful for couples since one partner is less likely to feel anything when the other person moves around.

Both beds contain coils that are individually wrapped in fabric, which is a popular method to help curb motion transfer in hybrid mattresses with innerspring units.

With the Birch, you can expect some motion-isolating properties. However, in previous testing with this mattress, we didn’t notice as much motion isolation as we have with memory foam-based products, for instance. The Avocado performs decently well with motion isolation, but like the Birch, it’s not going to isolate motion in the same way a memory foam bed would.

Comparing Cooling

Cooling mattresses are preferred by hot sleepers and people living in warmer climates.

The Birch mattress offers temperature regulation and cooling with its breathable and moisture-wicking latex, and organic cotton and wool. The wool helps regulate temperature nicely. Additionally, the individually-wrapped coils allow for airflow so heat doesn’t get trapped in the mattress.

The Avocado bed is topped with a breathable cotton cover, and below that, there is a temperature-regulating wool. The Dunlop latex that is throughout the Avocado mattress is also meant to regulate temperature, keeping you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Lastly, similar to the Birch, the pocketed coils promote airflow.

Comparing Construction (Materials & Quality)

Birch Construction

The 11-inch Birch mattress features natural cotton, wool, steel coils, and Talalay latex. On top of the mattress is a breathable, natural cotton cover that is soft and has a little bit of stretch to it. The cover protects and secures the mattress beneath.

  • The first layer is made up of wool and rayon, which acts as a flame retardant and keeps the body’s temperature neutral.
  • Next, is another organic wool layer that absorbs moisture to keep you dry while also cradling the body’s shape.
  • Under the wool, is a Talalay latex layer that focuses on pressure relief, responding to your body’s movements. This latex is also temperature neutral, so it won’t retain heat.
  • After the latex, you’ll find individually-wrapped coils that provide motion isolation and support, including edge support.
  • Finally, the base of the bed is made of flame-resistant wool batting that is sturdy and stabilizes the coil layer.

Avocado Construction

The Avocado mattress is 11 inches tall and is soft to the touch, with a breathable, organic cotton cover. The cover also consists of wool. This bed is primarily constructed of Dunlop latex and steel coils, which classifies it as a hybrid.

  • The first layer is made of 2 inches of eco-friendly, natural Dunlop latex. This latex promotes airflow and regulates temperature, and it also offers quite a bit of bounce.
  • Below the latex, there are individually pocketed 8-inch upcycled steel coils. These coils provide both support and pressure relief for a wide range of sleepers.
  • The base of the bed is 1 inch of a more dense Dunlop latex, so it is a little bit firmer than the other latex layer. This base layer provides additional support and sturdiness.
  • The perimeter of this mattress has stronger coils, which help support the edges of the bed, along with providing overall stability.

Comparing Company Policies & Price

For an Avocado mattress, you also need to try the bed for at least 30 nights, and then you can return it for a full refund, as long as it’s within the 365-night trial period.
  • Price – The Birch and Avocado mattresses are both priced fairly similarly. However, without applying discounts, the Avocado is slightly cheaper than the Birch in the Twin, Twin XL, Full, and Queen sizes, while the Birch is slightly cheaper than the Avocado in the King and Cali-King sizes.
