Mattress firmness is rated on a scale from 1 to 10. Although people have different needs, most like a balance between firm and soft. While soft beds allow more sinkage, they may not be as good for support. On the other hand, a mattress that’s too firm can easily create pressure points.
Medium-firm beds are popular because they can provide this balance between soft pressure relief and firm support. These models fall between a 5 and 7 on the firmness scale.
Follow along as we share the best medium-firm mattresses, why they’re so highly recommended, and everything else you need to know about when shopping for a medium-firm bed.

Sleep Advisor’s Testing Methodology
At Sleep Advisor, our mattress reviews are based on findings from in-person tests that allow us to have a genuine understanding of how the mattress feels and performs. We look at features that are valuable to consumers, such as temperature control, bounce, edge support, and motion isolation.
We also evaluate mattress performance for back, side, and stomach sleeping. Lying in different positions lets us know how supportive the bed is and if it’s good at relieving pressure.
We then take all the information we’ve gathered to rate the bed in specific categories. These results allow us to help our readers find the right mattress for their needs.

Why the Saatva Classic Earned Best Medium-Firm Mattress Overall
One of the staples of a good mattress is quality support, and I love Saatva’s emphasis on this aspect in their Classic mattress. It’s available in three firmness options, but I think the Luxury Firm version is a perfect match for those wanting the truest medium-firm sleep experience.
The bed’s two innerspring units support the body in all sleep positions while the rest of the layers provide cushioning comfort and pressure relief. For me, it’s a true “Goldilocks” mattress with a just-right balance of sink and support, and for that reason, it’s my top pick for a medium-firm mattress.
What’s the Saatva Classic Made Of?
Saatva offers this mattress in multiple sizes, two heights (11.5 and 14.5 inches), and three firmness levels (Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, Firm), so it’s easy to find one that suits you.
- Euro Pillow Top. This three-inch thick plush top of the mattress has an organic cotton cover with specialized quilting in the center for back support.
- Memory Foam Lumbar Crown. A crest of memory foam called a lumbar crown contours to the lower back for balanced lift and pressure relief.
- First Innerspring Unit. Pocketed coils make up the first innerspring layer, stronger in the center to better bear the brunt of your weight.
- Lumbar Zone® Active Spinal Wire. Within the two innerspring units is a strong wire that promotes proper alignment.
- Second Innerspring Unit. A traditional innerspring layer adds extra airflow and durability to the mattress.
- High-Density Foam Rails. Lining the perimeter, foam rails keep the edges from sagging while bearing weight.
What I Liked
- Eco-friendly – The Saatva Classic is a good choice for eco-conscious shoppers as it has an organic cotton cover, CertiPUR-US® certified foams, recycled steel coils, a Guardin™ antimicrobial treatment, and a natural thistle pulp flame-retardant barrier.
- White glove delivery – Saatva offers free white glove delivery with any purchase. This means they’ll send a team to install your new mattress and take away your old one, removing all of the hassle!
Potential Drawbacks
- Returns cost extra – Despite offering free white glove delivery, if you’re not happy with your mattress, it’ll cost $99 to return it. Be wary if you prefer to try before you buy.
- Could isolate motion better – The Saatva Classic’s two coil units make it feel pretty springy. Unfortunately, this doesn’t translate to an ability to dampen movements across the surface, which could be a problem for restless sleepers who share a bed.
Customer Reviews of The Saatva Classic
The Saatva Classic rates 4.8 stars out of 5 on Saatva’s website. One negative aspect customers found with the Saatva Classic mattress is that it may feel too firm for some users, while a notable advantage is its high-quality materials, providing durability and support.

Why the Emma Hybrid Comfort Earned Best Medium-Firm Hybrid Mattress
Hybrid beds are popular among sleepers who like a medium-firm feel, since they balance soft upper layers with supportive springs. If you’re looking for a medium-firm bed of this caliber, the Emma Hybrid Comfort has you covered.
It features three layers of foam and zoned coils in its hybrid construction, making for a truly lifted feeling. It also excels at buoyancy (thanks to its springs), meaning you should be able to switch positions with ease. It’s on the firmer side of the medium-firm spectrum, making it a great choice for folks who sleep on their stomachs and need robust hip support.
What’s the Emma Hybrid Comfort Made Of?
The Emma Hybrid Comfort has seven total layers. It’s 13 inches thick.
- Layer 1 – Top Cover. A breathable and soft sleep surface.
- Layer 2 – Airgocell® Foam. An open-celled foam keeps cool while relieving pressure at the top of the mattress.
- Layer 3 – Memory Foam. This foam layer contours to your body while contributing to motion isolation.
- Layer 4 – HRX Foam. “High Resilience Extra” foam feels firm for consistent support.
- Layer 5 – Innerspring Unit. Seven zones of pocketed coils keep you aloft and promote proper alignment.
- Layer 6 – Base. The foundation of the mattress boosts its longevity.
- Layer 7 – Lower Cover. A durable bottom cover with handles for ease of movement.
What I Liked
- Isolates motion pretty well – The Emma Hybrid Comfort is decent at absorbing motion, especially when you consider it’s a hybrid. Couples should enjoy the balance of its motion-dampening foams and responsive coils.
- Can support most sleepers – This bed’s sturdy, firmer construction should also benefit plus-sized folks and those who sleep on their stomach. These two groups often need a firmer bed to prevent unwanted sinking, and the Emma Hybrid Comfort should fit the bill.
Potential Drawbacks
- Too firm for side sleepers – This firmness level can be tough for some, including petite sleepers or those who prefer to sleep on their side. The Emma Hybrid Comfort may not offer the correct amount of sink or cradling around the hips and shoulders to relieve pressure buildup.
- Makes noise – During testing, I noticed a crinkling sound when I moved around on the mattress. I figured it must be one of the foam layers, but it’s something to be aware of if noise wakes you up easily.
Customer Reviews of The Emma Hybrid Comfort
This is a fairly new mattress, so Emma’s site doesn’t have many reviews yet, but early customers already rate it an impressive 5 out of 5 stars. So far customers appreciate the Emma Hybrid Comfort mattress for its excellent motion isolation, but some have reported that it may have a slight initial off-gassing odor upon unboxing.

Why the Helix Midnight Earned Best Medium-Firm Mattress for Side Sleepers
Side sleepers usually struggle with pressure build-up in the hips and shoulders, and therefore need a bed that’ll cushion these areas. The Helix Midnight should be a strong match, since it’s a medium-firm mattress designed with side sleepers in mind.
The foam layers on top contour to the body, relieving pressure around sensitive areas. Plus, the individually wrapped coils provide support and bounce, so you can still enjoy other sleep positions and switch between them with ease.
What’s the Helix Midnight Made Of?
The Helix Midnight is 11.5 inches tall. All foams used in its construction are CertiPUR-US® certified.
- Layer 1 – Cover. Helix offers two covers, so you can choose between a standard breathable knitted one or upgrade to the cooling GlacioTex™ cover, depending on how hot you sleep.
- Layer 2 – Memory Plus Foam. The first layer of foam promotes pressure relief.
- Layer 3 – Helix Responsive Foam. This medium-feel foam conforms to your body for comfortable contouring.
- Layer 4 – Helix Responsive Foam. The second layer of responsive foam helps to maintain support as it transitions into the coil layer below.
- Layer 5 – Coil Unit. Wrapped coils respond individually to your movements to keep you lifted while preventing motion transfer.
- Layer 6 – DuraDense Foam. A final layer of dense foam rounds out the mattress.
What We Liked
- Soft support – The Helix Midnight does an expert job at balancing softness with support, thanks to its strong coils and plush foams. This combination should benefit side sleepers especially.
- Isolates motion well – Despite the bouncy effect of the coils, we were surprised by this bed’s ability to keep movement from traveling across its surface. This is a plus for anyone who shares the bed with a partner or pet who moves around a lot.
Potential Drawbacks
- Not for stomach sleepers – Our testers thought the Midnight was a little too soft to properly support folks who sleep on their stomach. They should go for something firmer to keep their hips lifted.
- No hugging foams – The foams on top of the Helix Midnight provide some cushioning, but nothing at the level of an all-foam mattress. No swaddling here.
Customer Reviews of The Helix Midnight
The Helix Midnight rates 4.5 stars out of 5 on Helix’s website. The main negative is that reviewers tend to find it too soft for their liking and feel as though they’re sinking. But overall, users say they’re getting a great nights’ sleep and some pain relief.

Why the Nectar Hybrid Mattress Earned Best Medium-Firm Mattress for Couples
Couples looking for versatility and comfort in a medium-firm mattress should consider the Nectar Hybrid. This bed combines individually wrapped coils with gel memory foam for a choice blend of responsiveness, cooling, and contouring support.
Couples should particularly appreciate the motion isolation that stems from two memory foam layers above the coils. The pocketed coils compress separately (rather than affecting neighboring springs as they would in an interconnected unit), so you shouldn’t be disturbed by your partner’s tossing and turning.
What’s the Nectar Hybrid Made Of?
The Nectar Hybrid is 12 inches thick with six total layers.
- Layer 1 – Cooling Cover. This bed has a cooling cover woven with heat-wicking fabric. In addition, the cover is protected by an antimicrobial treatment to keep bacteria away.
- Layer 2 – Gel Memory Foam (2 inches). This foam is meant to cushion the body, adapt to your curves, and provide some cooling for hot sleepers.
- Layer 3 – Transition Layer (1 inch). A layer of responsive foam promotes spinal alignment while acting as a buffer between the comfort layers and the coil layer.
- Layer 4 – Innerspring Unit (8 inches). Individually wrapped coils keep you lifted. Thicker coils line the edges for a stronger perimeter.
- Layer 5 – Base Layer (1 inch). A foundational foam layer for structural support.
- Layer 6 – Lower Cover. A bottom cover keeps the mattress and everything within it in place.
What We Liked
- Great motion isolation for a hybrid – Even with the added coils, this bed’s foam layers absorb motion exceedingly well. “Traditionally, hybrid mattresses don’t have the greatest motion isolation,” said Stuart. “However, Nectar’s additional foam layers help dampen movement.”
- A memory-foam feeling that doesn’t trap you – “This bed gives a slow-response memory foam experience with an updated feel,” said Stuart. It “melts” to your pressure points, but it also preserves enough responsiveness to keep you from getting stuck: “Most memory foam beds take slightly more effort to move around on, but I personally didn’t feel restricted on the Nectar Hybrid.”
- Reliable edge support – “The edges of this bed are very supportive,” said Liz, another of our mattress testers. Stuart agreed, commending the bed for how it maximizes usable surface space for couples.
Potential Drawbacks
- It’s one of the firmer Nectar models – Lightweight people and side sleepers may want a softer surface than the Nectar Hybrid provides. “If you are primarily a side sleeper, this bed may be slightly too firm for you, especially if you have broader shoulders compared to your waist,” said Stuart.
- It lacks pronounced bounce – Although it will allow you to reposition with ease, this mattress isn’t hyper-responsive or springy. According to Liz, “It has a more traditional memory foam responsiveness, so you really slowly sink in.” If you prize bounce in your bed, choose a different model.
Customer Reviews of The Nectar Hybrid
On Nectar’s website, this mattress scored a 4.7 out of 5 stars, from 341 reviews. The Nectar Hybrid mattress, favored by customers for its affordability and pressure relief, has received some complaints about off-gassing odors upon unboxing.

Why the WinkBeds EcoCloud Earned Best Medium-Firm Cooling Mattress
The WinkBeds EcoCloud is a medium-firm hybrid bed that provides targeted support and weight distribution across multiple zones. If you’re a hot sleeper, though, you’ll probably be most interested in its cooling capabilities.
This mattress is naturally ventilated, thanks to its construction and materials. The top layers have heat-wicking properties, which help pull heat away from your body and keep the bed’s surface cool to the touch. The bed also features Talalay latex and pocketed coils, both of which promote cooling and airflow.
What’s the EcoCloud Made Of?
The EcoCloud stands 12.5 inches tall.
- Layer 1 – Cover. The cover is made from organic cotton and New Zealand Wool, a combination that should keep you cool thanks to these materials’ natural breathability..
- Layer 2 – Talalay Latex (4 inches). Textured latex provides bounce and cushion alongside balanced support and pressure relief across your body.
- Layer 3 – Innerspring System (8.5 inches). Recycled steel coils adapt to your weight and movements to ensure you’re lifted in all the right places. Firmer coils reinforce the perimeter for stronger edges.
What We Liked
- Earth-friendly – The EcoCloud boasts a number of certifications to ensure it’s constructed safely and ethically. It also contains a number of organic, naturally derived, and hypoallergenic materials that should appeal to the environmentally conscious.
- Bouncy – The latex layer in the EcoCloud adapts to your movement, making this hybrid a good option if you change positions often.
Potential Drawbacks
- Not for memory-foam fans – Latex has a uniquely bouncy feel that greatly differs from that of memory foam. Stuart stated that “we’re not quite at a hug-level yet.”
- Motion carries – During testing, the EcoCloud did just okay when it came to motion isolation. It isn’t the best choice for light sleepers with restless partners.
Customer Reviews of The WinkBeds EcoCloud
At 4.8 out of 5 stars on WinkBed’s site, the EcoCloud has an overwhelmingly positive response. Customers appreciate the eco-friendly materials used in the WinkBed EcoCloud mattress but have noted that the price point may be higher than some competitors.

Why the Nolah Signature Earned Best Medium-Firm Mattress for Pressure Relief
While pressure build-up can occur during sleep for many reasons, resting on an uncomfortable mattress is a common one. Thankfully, the Nolah Signature is made to tackle pressure build-up with multiple layers of specialized foams.
A mix of breathable AirFoam™, responsive foam, and dense support foam makes for a soft but supportive profile that should suit side sleepers and those with sensitive joints. At a 4 on our firmness scale, this is the plushest mattress on this list, but it should still feel bracing enough for petite folks and exclusive side sleepers.
What’s the Nolah Signature Made Of?
The Nolah Signature is 12 inches tall and has five layers.
- Layer 1 – Organic Cotton Cover. A naturally cooling and soft sleep surface.
- Layer 2 – Plush AirFoam™ (2.5 inches). Nolah’s proprietary foam doesn’t trap as much heat as traditional foams, and this plush layer gives the bed its cushioning surface.
- Layer 3 – Active Response Foam (1.5 inches). A breathable layer of responsive foam that bounces back according to your movements.
- Layer 4 – Firm AirFoam™ (1 inch). A firmer layer of AirFoam™ aids in supporting the softer comfort layers.
- Layer 5 – High-Density Foam Foundation (7 inches). A thick, sturdy base that extends the bed’s longevity.
What We Liked
- Cooling for foam – The brand’s proprietary AirFoam™ does an amazing job of relieving pressure but also excels at cooling. The material is temperature-neutral and doesn’t contain any heat-sensitive viscoelastic chemicals.
- Dampens motion – These same foams also absorb a lot of movement, meaning restless couples should be able to toss and turn without waking their partner.
Potential Drawbacks
- Lackluster edges – There’s no special reinforcement along the perimeter of the Nolah Signature, so the foam doesn’t hold up well while bearing weight. Laying or sitting at the edges will likely feel unstable.
- Too soft for some – People who need firmer support, like heavier sleepers or those who prefer to lie on their stomach, may sink too far into the Nolah Signature’s plush layers to remain comfortably lifted.
Customer Reviews of The Nolah Signature
The Nolah Signature gets a 4.8 out of 5 stars on Nolah’s website. One potential drawback of the Nolah Signature mattress is its limited firmness options, but it excels in providing exceptional pressure relief and a cooling sleep experience.

Why the Bear Original Earned Best Cheap Medium-Firm Mattress
The Bear Original mattress is an all-foam model that contains memory foam at the top, providing that hugging feel without taking away from baseline support. It also comes in at a great price: under $1,000 for a queen mattress—and that’s before sales, which are frequent on Bear’s site.
This medium-firm mattress is an excellent choice for supporting your body in all sleep positions. The foams respond to movement and adapt to your curves so that pressure doesn’t build up around sensitive areas. And although it’s made with memory foam, this bed shouldn’t overheat, so it’s a good option for those who sleep hot.
What’s the Bear Original Made Of?
The Bear Original has four layers in its 10-inch construction.
- Layer 1 – Tencel™ Cover. The Tencel™ fibers that make up this cover are both durable and breathable.
- Layer 2 – Gel Memory Foam. Cooling gel allows this foam to regulate overheating while also promoting proper alignment.
- Layer 3 – Bear Dynamic Foam. A more responsive foam aids in providing support.
- Layer 4 – High-Density Support Form. A durable foam foundation layer.
What We Liked
- Firmer foam – Most foam mattresses tend to fall on the softer side, but the Bear Original’s firmer profile makes it more versatile. It can support a variety of positions while still providing some pressure relief, thereby benefiting back sleepers, heavier sleepers, and those who just prefer a firm feel.
- Good for couples – The Bear Original’s foams also work to isolate motion and provide just a smidge more bounce than typical memory foam. This combination is great for restless sleepers who share the bed with their partner, as well as sexually active couples.
Potential Drawbacks
- Tough for some side sleepers – The Bear Original might feel too firm for some folks who sleep on their side. It may be difficult to get comfortable cradling and cushioning.
- Thin profile – This mattress is only 10 inches tall, making it the thinnest on this list. It may sit quite low to the ground without a platform frame.
Customer Reviews of The Bear Original
According to Bear’s website, the Bear Original scores about 4.5 out of 5 stars. Customers appreciate the Bear Original mattress for its excellent pressure relief but have reported that its edge support may be lacking, which could affect those who use the full mattress surface.

Why the DreamCloud Premier Earned Best Luxury Medium-Firm Mattress
The DreamCloud Premier is designed to mix comfort and support inside a memorably fancy package. The bed features a luxurious cashmere blend cover, inviting Euro top, and pocketed innerspring coils, adding up to a lofty height of 14 inches.
Considering the high-end nature of this bed, it comes at a pretty reasonable price. Sales often bring the queen model of this bed down to about $1,000.
What’s the DreamCloud Premier Made Of?
The DreamCloud Premier has seven layers and is 14 inches thick, made with coils and CertiPUR-US® certified foams.
- Layer 1 – Top Cover. A luxurious cashmere blend tops the bed with sumptuous softness.
- Layer 2 – Memory Foam (1 inch). This foam layer adapts to your body for premium pressure relief at the surface.
- Layer 3 – Soft Foam (1 inch). Another plush foam contributes to the cushioning feel of the pillow top.
- Layer 4 – Transition Foam (2.5 inches). This foam acts as a buffer between the comfort layers and the innerspring layer.
- Layer 5 – Coil Unit (8.5 inches). Individually wrapped coils support your body while allowing for airflow. The coils around the edges are thicker for added reinforcement.
- Layer 6 – Base Foam (1 inch). A base layer under the coils ensures the quality performance of the layers above.
- Layer 7 – Lower Cover. The bottom layers are wrapped in a shift-resistant cover with handles that make it easy to move the Premier.
What I Liked
- Stellar pressure relief – The foams on top of the DreamCloud Premier are delightfully soft and thick enough to allow for cradling around sensitive joints. Side sleepers should find their match with this bed.
- Keeps up the support – Despite this softness, the coil layer beneath the foams ensures that you stay lifted and properly aligned lying on the mattress surface.
Potential Drawbacks
- Motion travels easily – In testing, I noticed that this bed could absorb small movements, but bigger ones were more noticeable. Your partner may feel you getting in and out of bed during the night, for example.
- Weaker edges – The DreamCloud Premier has reinforced edges that hold up when you lay near them, but sitting is a different story. The perimeter sinks a lot when weight is put directly on it.
Customer Reviews of The DreamCloud Premier
Coming in at 4.5 out of 5 stars on DreamCloud’s site, the DreamCloud Premier receives a majority of positive reviews. Customers praise the DreamCloud Premier mattress for its luxury feel, but some have noted that it may not be the best choice for those on a tighter budget.

Why the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Earned Best Medium-Firm Mattress for Back Pain
The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe is a hybrid mattress available in three firmness levels. The Medium model is the golden middle ground between a soft and firm feel, and a good match for sleepers suffering from back pain—they benefit most from a balance of pressure relief on top, strong support on the bottom.
You should remain properly aligned on this bed while feeling relief in areas prone to pressure buildup. Repositioning should feel easy too, thanks to its springy surface. All in all, this medium-firm bed is primed to help with back pain across a variety of sleeping positions.
What’s the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Made Of?
The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe is 13 inches tall. It comes in a Soft, Medium, or Firm feel.
- Layer 1 – Cover. The GlacioTex™ cover on top of the mattress feels cool to the touch.
- Layer 2 – CopperFlex™ Foam (1.5 inches). The mattress has a layer of CopperFlex™ treated with phase-change treatment to help draw body heat away from the surface of the bed. Copper is known to help with cooling, but it also has antimicrobial properties.
- Layer 3 – Supreme Response Comfort Foam (1.5 or 2 inches). This hyper-elastic memory foam provides contouring and responsiveness, adjusting to pressure and movement.
- Layer 4 – Gel Swirl Memory Foam (1 inch) or VariFlex™ Foam (1.5 inches). Gel memory foam provides pressure relief in the Soft and Medium models while VariFlex™ foam in the Firm model adds firm support.
- Layer 5 – Coil Unit. An 8-inch coil unit built with individually wrapped Ascension® coils.
- Layer 6 – High-Density Foam Base (0.75 inches). A durable and dense foam layer supports the coils and acts as the foundation for the mattress.
What I Liked
- Plenty of bounce – The bed bounced back almost instantly in response to my movements, which should make it a perfect match for combination sleepers and restless folks who need to toss and turn without getting stuck in their bed.
- Cooling capability – Not only is this mattress good for combatting back pain, it should also stave off overheating with its many cooling features: a cooling cover, copper- and gel-infused foams, and individually pocketed coils.
Potential Drawbacks
- Could get too cool – It’s worth noting that some of my fellow testers thought the Aurora Luxe could get too chilly for those in a colder climate. Be aware that you may have to snuggle up tight in this bed!
- Feels firmer – Even the Medium model may feel a bit more unyielding than a typical medium-firm mattress. It could be a little too firm for side sleepers who need loads of pressure relief or lightweight sleepers seeking a comfortable sink.
Customer Reviews of The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe
On Brooklyn Bedding’s site, the Aurora Luxe has a rating of 4.7 out of 5 stars. Customers praise the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe mattress for its advanced cooling features, but some have mentioned that it is relatively expensive compared to other options.

Why the TEMPUR-Adapt Earned Best Medium-Firm Mattress for Back Sleepers
Back sleepers need a supportive mattress that won’t allow their hips to sink too far into the layers, leading to a misaligned spine. The Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Adapt mattress should help in this regard: it features proprietary materials that adapt and respond to your shape, weight, and even your temperature. As a result, back sleepers should feel the right amount of lift for their body, as well as a soothing dose of pressure relief.
What’s the TEMPUR-Adapt Made Of?
The TEMPUR-Adapt is typically an all-foam mattress, but a hybrid version is also available. Both models offer excellent pressure relief and support, and are 11 inches thick.
The specific construction of the all-foam TEMPUR-Adapt will depend on the firmness you select, with varying layers of proprietary materials. The hybrid model simply adds a coil layer to base.
- Cover – This cover contains a blend of cooling fibers to prevent overheating at the surface.
- Comfort Layer – In the Soft and Medium TEMPUR-Adapt models, this layer is made up of a plusher TEMPUR-ES® material for more cushion and contouring. In the Firm model, a firmer TEMPUR-APR™ material allows for just the right amount of pressure relief.
- Support Layer – TEMPUR-APR™ is the support layer for the Soft and Medium. The Firm model features the original TEMPUR® material to keep up the firm support.
- Base – A dense poly foam foundation.
What We Liked
- Works for a variety of positions – Adapt is a fine name for this bed, since it adapts to plenty of positions and body types. It comes in different firmnesses so you can tailor your bed to your needs—pick a firmer option if you sleep on your stomach, or softer if you prefer your back or side.
- Motion isolating – If you share a bed, the foam layers here absorb motion well, so it’s unlikely that partners with different sleep habits will wake each other up.
Potential Drawbacks
- High price – Tempur-Pedic is a luxury brand with pretty big price tags on their products. The TEMPUR-Adapt retails at over $2,000 for a queen mattress—one of the most expensive options offered on this list.
- Can overheat – There is some cooling technology included in the TEMPUR-Adapt, but we don’t think it’s enough to compensate for the bed’s all-foam construction. If you want more airflow through the mattress, stick with the hybrid option.
Customer Reviews of The TEMPUR-Adapt
Customers on the Tempur-Pedic website rate the TEMPUR-Adapt a 4.5 out of 5 stars. One negative aspect of the TEMPUR-Adapt mattress, as reported by some customers, is its relatively high price, while a notable pro mentioned by customers is its exceptional pressure-relieving comfort.

What Is a Medium Firm Mattress?
A medium-firm mattress is considered a bed that’s rated between a 5 and 7 on a firmness scale. As such, these beds can provide both softness and support and are suitable for the majority of sleepers.
While the firmness of these beds is similar, the construction among them varies. Medium-firm beds can include hybrids, innerspring mattresses, memory foam beds, and latex models.
Medium-firm mattresses are the most common option, but they’re not for everyone. For this reason, it’s always best to consider your weight and sleep position to determine if a medium feel is right for you.
Types of Medium Firm Mattresses
There are several types of medium-firm mattresses for you to choose from, each with their unique set of pros and cons.
Hybrid
Hybrid mattresses are highly popular among people looking for support, bounce, and breathability. These offer a blend of contouring foam and steel coils. The foam is typically included in the top layers, whereas the coils are towards the bottom.
Medium-firm hybrid mattresses have a sturdy coil unit and multiple foam layers working together to bring pressure relief and support for sleepers weighing up to 230 pounds. Hybrids are also breezy and less likely to overheat, thanks to the coil unit that fosters airflow.
Foam
Foam mattresses have a few layers made from memory foam or polyfoam, though some models may include both. These beds have a high-density foam core that supports the upper layers and ensures durability. The top layers are typically softer to contour the body for pressure relief. Medium-firm memory foam mattresses can be better at pressure relief than certain hybrids and innerspring models, but they may be too hot unless they feature cooling technologies and materials.
Nevertheless, they’re ideal for most sleepers, although heavyweight sleepers may want a bed with more pushback support.
Latex
Latex mattresses are a good choice for eco-conscious shoppers. Latex is a responsive material harvested from the sap of rubber trees. This unique material is known for its moderate contouring properties, so a medium-firm latex bed would be good for back and stomach sleepers. In addition, these beds should provide much-needed support for the hips, preventing them from sinking into the mattress. Another great characteristic of latex beds is their durability, so while they may cost more upfront, they should last you longer.
Innerspring
Innerspring beds are similar to hybrids in that they have spring coils. However, innerspring models don’t have thicker comfort layers like hybrids do. Instead, they have a thin foam layer on top of the coil unit. In some cases, the coils are individually wrapped, while others are interconnected. The performance of an innerspring mattress depends on the coil unit. For this reason, these sometimes lack motion isolation, but they’re airy and suitable for hot sleepers. Innerspring beds are also a great budget-friendly option compared to hybrid or latex models.
Who Should Sleep on a Medium Firm Mattress?
Medium-firm mattresses are versatile and should fit most sleepers. However, certain sleepers may need a softer or firmer bed depending on their body type and sleep position. For example, a lightweight sleeper may not find comfort in the same mattress as a heavier person and vice versa.
Back Sleepers
Medium-firm mattresses are excellent for back sleepers as they provide sufficient support to keep the spine aligned. Sleepers weighing between 130 and 230 pounds should find these particularly comfortable, getting gentle contouring for pressure relief and support for a healthy sleep posture.

Back Pain Sufferers
Those who struggle with back pain should focus on finding a bed that supports the spine, ensuring it’s always in proper alignment. A medium-firm mattress can help with pain relief by keeping the hips from collapsing into the bed as this could throw the spine out of alignment and cause you to wake up with an aching back. A medium-firm mattress gives a balance of support and contouring to relieve back pain without causing pressure build-up in other sensitive areas.

Stomach Sleepers
Stomach sleepers need an equally supportive bed that supports the hips. Softer mattresses allow the hips to sink too much, which causes the lower back to hyperextend, eventually leading to back pain. A medium-firm bed is a golden middle between too firm and soft, supporting the hips while cushioning the rest of your body. However, some heavier stomach sleepers may feel better supported with firm beds since their weight will cause more compression into the layers.

Plus Size Sleepers
Heavier folks usually prefer sleeping on firmer mattresses due to the support they provide. Medium-firm beds can typically support sleepers weighing up to 230 pounds. One thing to keep in mind is that a heavier sleeper may find such mattresses softer than sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds. Significantly heavier side sleepers may like a medium-firm mattress, but back and stomach sleepers weighing over 230 pounds will likely opt for a firmer one.

What to Consider When Buying Medium Firm Bed
Although most people focus on the firmness of a mattress, other factors are equally important when considering overall comfort and quality.
Material
Although all medium-firm mattresses should feel the same, the materials they’re made from can make a difference. In other words, a memory foam bed won’t feel the same as an innerspring, even though they’re both medium-firm. In addition, materials can impact how warm or cool the bed’s surface is. Therefore, you should carefully inspect the construction, checking each material to ensure it fits your needs, especially if you’re looking for an eco-friendly or hypoallergenic bed.
Firmness
Firmness describes how hard or soft the bed feels when you lie on it. Medium-firm is the most versatile feel, and these mattresses fall between a 5 and 7 on our firmness scale, so they’re neither soft nor firm.
These beds are suitable for most sleepers, though some lightweight and plus-size sleepers may prefer other firmness options. Still, it’s important to remember that firmness is subjective and two medium-firm beds may not feel completely the same, depending on their comfort layers or lack thereof. Keep in mind, a medium-firm bed is a great option for guest rooms or vacation rental properties due to its versatility.
Motion Isolation
Motion isolation refers to how well the bed prevents motion from transferring from one side of the mattress to the other. This feature is helpful for couples and everyone else sharing a bed. Memory foam and hybrid mattresses are usually better at motion isolation than latex and innerspring beds. Memory foam is excellent at absorbing motion while the use of pocketed coils and foams in hybrids helps reduce motion transfer.
Cooling
If you or your partner sleep hots, then a great cooling bed is going to be important. Memory foam beds are known to overheat, but manufacturers now use gel and copper infusions to cool the material and make these more suitable for hot sleepers.
Latex is more cooling as it’s naturally more breathable. Hybrids and innerspring models are also good for hot sleepers because the coil units provide sufficient airflow to keep the other layers cool. Many models also have unique covers that remain cool to the touch.

Edge Support
Edge support is important for couples and single individuals who like to spread across their mattresses. Without edge support, you’d likely feel like rolling off the mattress if you sit or sleep near the edge. Hybrid mattresses have the best edge support thanks to the coils that often go from one side of the bed to the other. Some even have a reinforced perimeter with thicker gauge coils that prevent the edges from collapsing.
Pressure Relief
Pressure build-up is a common issue many sleepers struggle with, although folks who sleep on their side usually struggle the most. The best way to achieve relief is to choose a bed with contouring and cushioning layers that allow a gentle hug. This way, sensitive points like the shoulders, hips, and knees are more “in” the bed than “on” it. Memory foam and latex beds are excellent at pressure relief but so are hybrids with foam and latex comfort layers.
Explore our best mattresses for pressure relief.
Price
Medium-firm mattresses are available at different prices, but the firmness rarely affects the overall cost. You’ll notice this by checking different firmness options of the same bed. The price usually depends on the size, materials, unique features (like cooling), height, and brand quality. Although you should have a pre-set budget, try not to let the price be the only deciding factor when buying a medium-firm mattress.
Warranty
All reputable brands will include a warranty with their product. However, warranties vary, so you’ll come across different deals depending on the brand you’re looking at. Some companies offer a 1-year long warranty, while others go as far as providing a lifetime warranty. Although most companies cover the same things, the length of a warranty can make a difference. The longest-lasting deals often indicate how confident a brand is in its product, quality of materials, and craftsmanship.
Sleep Trial
Sometimes it’s hard to decide if a mattress is good for you without trying it out. Brands have recognized this problem, which is why they include a sleep trial during which you can use the mattress without commitment. If you decide you don’t like it, the company will take it back before the pre-determined sleep trial ends and will refund your money. The trial can last anywhere between 30 and 365 nights.
How to Make Your Bed More Comfortable
Did you know you can adjust how your mattress feels? There are ways to make it more comfortable and suitable for your sleep habits and preferences.
Pillows
A quality pillow can support your head and neck, keeping the spine aligned and allowing a healthy sleep posture. Side and back sleepers should look for a medium or high loft pillow, and stomach sleepers will need a lower loft to prevent the neck from resting at an uncomfortable angle. Therefore, it’s best to consider your preferred sleeping position before picking a pillow to compliment your medium-firm mattress.
Mattress Toppers
Mattress toppers are meant to adjust the feel and firmness of a bed. This means you can turn your soft mattress into a firmer one and vice versa. Toppers come in a range of firmness levels and heights, so they can make your mattress taller. Most toppers are between two and four inches thick. A topper sits above your mattress under the fitted sheet. Most models are made from foam, fiberfill, latex, and down.
Medium-Firm Mattress FAQs
How do I know if a medium-firm mattress is right for me?
You should first consider your sleep position and weight. Medium-firm beds are typically the best for back sleepers, although some side and stomach sleepers may also like them depending on their body weight. Luckily, most brands offer a sleep trial for customers to see if the mattress is right for them.
Is a medium-firm mattress good for your back?
A medium-firm mattress should be good for your back, especially if back sleeping is your preferred position. These beds provide sufficient support and gentle contouring to fill the gap between your lower back and the mattress. Some models are even specifically made for reducing back pain.
What is the difference between firm and medium firm mattresses?
The difference between firm and medium-firm mattresses is in how they feel and their rating. Firm beds are noticeably more rigid and have firmness ratings above 7. Firm mattresses often have minimal contouring pressure relief but excellent support, particularly for heavier bodies.
Is a medium-firm mattress good for side sleepers?
Whether a medium-firm mattress is good for side sleepers depends on the person. Some side sleepers love soft beds that let them sink into the first layer. Others prefer to sleep “on” the bed instead of “in” it but still like a bit of contouring to prevent pressure build-up. Plus, lightweight and heavier side sleepers won’t get the same feel from the same firmness level. This means your body weight is crucial in deciding if a medium-firm mattress is good for side sleeping.
