Our In-Depth Leesa Studio Mattress Review for 2024

Last Updated on September 22, 2023

Written by Natalie G.

The Leesa Studio mattress is a bed-in-a-box product that provides both pressure relief and excellent support, which is not always easy to find in an all-foam mattress. This one manages to do it, though, contouring the body and still promoting proper spinal alignment. This makes it an excellent mattress for many body types and positions, and perhaps best of all, it does all of this for a budget-friendly price.

To find out more, read this complete Leesa Studio mattress review, where we’ll cover every aspect of this bed to find out if this is the right mattress for you.

Who We Recommend The Leesa Studio For:

  • Back sleepers – This mattress is on the firmer side, so it works well for most back sleepers. Its memory foam construction also means that you’ll get a good amount of pressure relief and contouring for the joints and muscles.

  • Stomach sleepers – Stomach sleepers need a bed that will keep their hips from dipping into the mattress. The Leesa Studio is firm enough to do so but still soft enough to still be comfortable for stomach sleepers.

  • Budget shoppers – This mattress is more affordable than many similar mattresses on the market. This is great news for those who want a quality night’s sleep, without paying over 1,000 dollars.

Who We Don’t Recommend The Leesa Studio For:

  • Sleepers who want some bounce – If you’re used to sleeping on a hybrid or innerspring bed and appreciate the bounce of the coils, the Leesa Studio might take some getting used to. As an all-foam bed, it won’t have that same buoyancy.

  • Most side sleepers – While some sleepers will be able to comfortably sleep on their sides, most people will feel a buildup of pressure on the shoulder or hip on this bed.

  • Those who want a softer mattress – This bed is firm and won’t sink as deeply as a softer mattress would.

First Impressions: Firmness & Feel

Firmness Scale: 7.5/10 (Firm)

Please remember that firmness is a subjective characteristic and your shape will dictate how you experience a bed. A heavier person whose weight can more easily push through softer comfort and support layers may experience a bed as softer than a lightweight person. The way you are shaped could also play a role here. Consider your weight, shape, and size when evaluating firmness scores.

We rate mattress firmness between 1 and 10, where 1 is the softest possible feel, and 10 is as firm as it gets. We feel the Leesa Studio falls at a 7.5. For context, a medium firmness is right around a 5 or 6, so the Leesa Studio is considered firmer than your average bed.

This makes it a great fit for some stomach sleepers, who need a firmer bed, and most back sleepers. However, this firmer feel can make it less comfortable for side sleeping or very lightweight sleepers, who may not experience enough cushioning to relieve pressure points.

How Does It Feel?

Immediately after unboxing the Studio, you’ll notice the breathable and durable polyester cover. It should feel cool to the touch.

When you lie down, you’ll sink a bit into the top layer of memory foam but not too far. Beneath the memory foam unit is a layer of poly foam, which will feel firmer. It will bolster you up, so you’ll never feel ‘in’ this bed but more so ‘on top of’ it, unlike some softer, more traditional memory foam beds.

What We Like About the Studio

  • Great motion isolation – The Studio provides excellent motion isolation, meaning you shouldn’t be able to feel your partner moving at night. This is great news for sensitive sleepers who share a bed.

  • It uses some eco-friendly materials – The Studio is both GREENGUARD Gold and CertiPUR-US® Certified for its low chemical emissions.

  • Great for stomach sleepers – It can be hard to find a mattress that is firm yet comfortable enough to sleep on your stomach. The Studio is a great fit.

Our Studio Complaints

  • It won’t work for all positions – Most side sleepers will likely find the Studio to be too firm for side sleeping.

  • It won’t work for all body typesHeavyweight sleepers might sink through this bed’s memory foam comfort layer and rest on the firmer support layers. Additionally, the firmer feel could make it uncomfortable for petite sleepers.

  • It sleeps hot – This mattress doesn’t have the cooling properties that other beds include, and as a result, it is more likely to retain heat at night.

Testing the Studio Mattress: How it Performed

When we test mattresses, we look at specific features to find out who this mattress would be the best fit for. These features include cooling, motion isolation, bounce, and edge support. We also lie on the mattress in different sleeping positions to see how the bed performed for support and pressure relief in each posture.

Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types

According to Leesa, their Studio mattress is designed to support up to 300 pounds per side of the bed. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean the bed will be supportive for heavier bodies.

Lightweight Sleepers (-130 lbs)★☆☆★★★★★★
Average-Weight Sleepers (130-230 lbs)☆☆☆★★☆★★☆
Heavyweight Sleepers (+230 lbs)☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆

Side Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Sleepers around 130 pounds or less might be light enough to feel comfortable on their side on this bed since they won’t sink down into the support layer, though many will still feel it is too firm for side sleeping.
  • Average Weight Sleepers – Average-weight side sleepers will want to find a mattress with softer and thicker comfort layers to cradle the hip and shoulder. This one will likely create pressure in those areas.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavyweight sleepers will likely push through the comfort layers of this bed and rest on the firm support layers. This will feel uncomfortable and create a lot of pressure for side sleepers.

Back Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight back and stomach sleepers will probably benefit the most from this bed. They will feel supported enough but still feel pressure relief from the memory foam top layer.
  • Average Weight Sleepers – Average-weight back sleepers closer to 130 pounds than 230 pounds will benefit more from this bed. Those who are closer to 230 will likely need something more supportive.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – As with side sleeping, heavyweight sleepers will likely not feel sufficiently supported by this bed.

Stomach Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight stomach sleepers should feel comfortably supported on this bed. It will elevate the hips and keep the spine in alignment.
  • Average Weight Sleepers – Average-weight stomach sleepers on the lower end of this weight range should feel comfortably supported by the Studio. Those closer to 230 pounds, though, might need more support beneath the hips.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavyweight sleepers will probably feel their hips sink into this mattress, which could result in lower back pain.

Pressure Relief & Pain

When we mention pressure relief, we’re talking about how well a mattress can alleviate tension in pressure points areas like the hips, shoulders, and lower back. Memory foam is typically an excellent material for relieving pressure since it contours the body well.

The Leesa has memory foam, but its firmer feel means that for side sleepers, this bed will probably feel too firm and might create more pressure, rather than relieve it.

Back Pain – This bed should work well at alleviating back pain in certain sleepers. The people that will benefit most, we think, are lightweight and average-weight back and stomach sleepers. For these people, the Studio should keep their spine in a neutral alignment and as a result, help curb back pain.

Hip Pain – Side sleepers with hip pain need to be careful when choosing a bed because more pressure gathers in the hip and shoulder while in this posture. Unfortunately, the Leesa Studio bed will be too firm for side sleepers and may exacerbate hip pain.

Shoulder Pain – Sleepers with shoulder pain should do well on their backs or stomachs on the Leesa, though side sleepers will do better with a softer mattress.

Support

Support in a mattress reflects how well the bed keeps your spine in proper alignment, preventing you from sleeping at an awkward angle. Oftentimes, we may think of firm mattresses as being the most supportive and soft ones as less supportive, but it really depends on your body type. As long as the bed keeps your spine neutrally aligned, it is supportive.

That said, this firm mattress is quite supportive for some body types, namely, lightweight and most average-weight sleepers. Heavyweight sleepers, though, will not get the same support benefits from this bed.

Motion Transfer

Motion transfer describes how much you’ll be able to feel somebody else move on the other side of the bed. This is going to be especially important for couples or people who share a bed with pets.

Luckily, because the Studio is an all-foam mattress with slow-moving foam (meaning, it will not immediately bounce back when you move), it has excellent motion isolation. Therefore, you shouldn’t be able to feel somebody else changing positions or possibly even when they get up from the bed at night since it doesn’t include any coils in its construction.

Temperature Regulation / Cooling

The Studio mattress is made entirely from memory and poly foams, so it will trap heat more than a bed that has coils or latex. That said, this bed does come with a cooling and moisture-wicking mattress cover, and the foams are open-cell, which should provide some breathability. It isn’t the hottest mattress, but it won’t sleep as cool as a hybrid or latex model.

Performance for Couples

Couples sharing a mattress typically look for a combination of features. These include great motion isolation (so you won’t be able to feel your partner’s movements), temperature regulation (so you two won’t overheat), some bounce (preferable for some sexually-active couples), and edge support (extra surface-space use).

While this all-foam bed doesn’t have any bounce, it does excel at motion isolation, and for those who don’t tend to sleep hot already, it should be just fine as far as heat retention goes. The Studio doesn’t rate well for edge support, though, so those who like to spread out may not like this bed.

Preference-based Features

Made in the USA

All Leesa mattresses are designed and manufactured in the United States.

Adjustable Base Compatible

The Leesa Studio is compatible with adjustable bases, platform beds, and regular foundations. You can easily add one of these when ordering this mattress online.

Bed-in-a-box

The Leesa Studio bed can be ordered online and will ship to your home compressed in a box.

Construction: What’s Inside the Leesa Studio?

The Studio mattress by Leesa comes compressed in a box and is shipped directly to your door. Once you’ve unboxed it, it will take some time to fully expand. When it does, it will measure 10 inches tall.

The whole mattress is made up of three foam layers, wrapped in a soft and breathable polyester cover. This cover also has some moisture-wicking properties, so it should help keep you cool and sweat-free at night, though exceptionally hot sleepers may prefer a better cooling mattress.

  • Beneath the cover, is a comfort layer. This comfort layer is the softest and most pressure-relieving of the layers. It is made from a slow-response memory foam, so you’ll sink into this material and feel pressure relief around your shoulders, hips, and lower back.
  • Further below is a transition layer made from polyurethane foam. Unlike the first layer, which has more sinkage and a slower response, this foam is quicker to respond to pressure and feels firmer. It also serves as a transition layer to ease the sleeper into the firmest, most supportive layer below.
  • The base layer is the thickest part of this bed, measuring 7 inches tall. This is made from a high-density poly foam, which is durable and provides the stability and foundation for the entire mattress. This dense foam layer is why the Studio feels firmer than some other all-foam mattresses.

Unboxing & Off-Gassing

Most foam mattresses that come in a box have an off-gassing period just after you unbox the bed. During this time, you’ll smell either a strong or faint chemical odor, which should dissipate within 24 to 48 hours.

In the case of the Studio, unboxing should take approximately 10-15 minutes. The mattress itself weighs 68 pounds (for a Queen), so you may need help from a friend.

Once it is unwrapped and unboxed, as typical for foam mattresses, you’ll notice a chemical odor. This should dissipate completely within 48 hours. You can leave it in a well-ventilated room to speed up this process.

Certifications

  • GREENGUARD Gold certified – This product is low in chemical emissions, maintaining healthy indoor air quality. This certification has the strictest guidelines for total VOC emissions, and it is one of the best certifications in the industry.
  • CertiPUR-US® certified – The foams in this bed are CertiPUR-US® certified. CertiPUR-US® is a third-party program that ensures the foams meet rigorous health and safety standards. This means they don’t contain harmful substances like ozone depleters, PBDEs, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and phthalates. They should also have low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do Leesa mattresses last?

This will depend on several factors including the sleepers’ preferred position, weight, and how many people are sharing the bed. That said, in general, all-foam mattresses tend to have shorter lifespans than hybrid or innerspring beds, and most foam beds last around six to eight years.

Can I put a Leesa mattress on a box spring?

Yes, you can put Leesa mattresses on a box spring, though it’s not necessary. This will be true for the Studio mattress as well.

Is the Leesa Studio mattress good for back pain?

The Leesa Studio can be a great mattress for back pain, depending on your body type and sleep position. The Leesa Hybrid, though, should be an even better fit for sleepers with back pain, since it has both foam and supportive coils.

What mattress is similar to the Leesa Studio?

The Leesa Studio stands out as a high-quality memory foam mattress with an affordable price tag. In this way, it is similar to the Nectar mattress.

Overall Summary

The Studio by Leesa is a budget-friendly, all-foam mattress that’s ideal for those looking for a firmer bed.

Side Sleepers

2/5

This bed is on the firmer side and most side sleepers will find that it creates some pressure on the hip and shoulder. Instead, we’d recommend a softer bed for strict side sleepers or even adding a plush mattress topper to this one.

Back Sleepers

4/5

Most back sleepers should feel supported on this bed – especially those weighing under 230 pounds. It should keep the spine in a healthy, neutral alignment in this sleep position, which should ultimately decrease back pain. Those weighing over 230 pounds, though, will want a more supportive bed.

Stomach Sleepers

4/5

Most stomach sleepers should appreciate this bed’s firmness, as it will prevent the hips from dipping down into the mattress and putting the spine out of alignment. Sleepers who weigh significantly more, though, will likely need more support beneath the hips.

Combination Sleepers

2/5

The foam in this bed is slower to respond, which means it won’t bounce back to its original shape very quickly when you move. This makes it somewhat difficult for those changing positions throughout the night, who will want a springier design. Additionally, it would only feel comfortable on your back or stomach.

Couples

3/5

With the slow-response foam and lack of coils, you’re much less likely to feel your partner changing positions or getting up at night. However, it lacks strong edge support, bounce, and cooling, which could be drawbacks for many people.

Heavy Sleepers

1/5

Significantly heavier folks will likely sink through the memory foam comfort layer and rest on the firm poly foam support layer beneath. This can feel uncomfortable and create pressure on sensitive areas like the shoulders and hips. We recommend a bed with more support, like a hybrid, for heavier sleepers.

Lightweight Sleepers

4/5

Lighter-than-average sleepers should sink into the memory foam layer just enough to feel a good amount of pressure relief and support. This will be especially true for lightweight back and stomach sleepers. However, lightweight side sleepers will need a softer mattress to protect the shoulders and hips.

Average Weight Sleepers

4/5

The Studio is a great fit for average-weight back sleepers in particular. It should also work well for some average-weight stomach sleepers (who are closer to 130 than 230 pounds), though it will likely feel too firm for average-weight side sleepers.

Overall Value

4/5

The Studio by Leesa is one of the more affordable bed-in-a-box mattresses of this quality on the market. It comes with an industry-standard trial and warranty, as well as several respected certifications. What you’re getting with the Studio for this low price, is an excellent value overall.

Our Verdict

It can be hard to find a quality mattress for an affordable price, but the Studio by Leesa is just that. It is made from durable memory and poly foam and is both GREENGUARD Gold and CertiPUR-US® Certified.

We recommend this mattress for light and average-weight back and stomach sleepers. Couples who primarily want excellent motion isolation should also enjoy this mattress, though the edge support is lacking so we advise getting a larger size.

Side sleepers, heavyweight sleepers, and those who prefer a softer mattress won’t be good matches for the Studio.
