Best Twin Mattresses for 2024, Tested by Experts

Last Updated on January 13, 2024

Written by Julia Forbes

When you hear the words “twin size,” you may imagine a painfully thin, dorm-style mattress you could flip like a pancake. But I have good news: online mattress companies have recognized the space-saving appeal of the twin bed, and most of them carry their signature mattresses in this size.

This universal uptick in quality means that twin-size mattresses aren’t just for kids and college students anymore. They can be a great choice for adults, too.

After extensive testing by our team, I’ve collected the best twin mattresses into an easy-to-browse list. Hopefully, there’s a twin that will win your heart below.

What’s the Best Twin Mattress?

The Helix Midnight Luxe earned the title of best twin mattress because it nailed the qualities we most want to see in a bed this size: strong edge support, even weight distribution, and a lovely balance of coziness and lift. The pillow top is a cushiony bonus.

How We Tested the Best Twin Beds

At Sleep Advisor, our mattress reviews are based on findings from in-person tests that allow us to have a genuine understanding of how the mattress feels and performs.

When picking the best twin mattresses, we looked at crucial factors for this size, such as edge support, thickness, and cost.

We also evaluated how the mattresses performed for back, side, and stomach sleeping. Lying in different positions lets us know how supportive the bed is and whether it’s good at relieving pressure.

Why the Helix Midnight Luxe Earned Best Twin Mattress Overall

The Helix Midnight Luxe proves that a twin mattress doesn’t have to be a thin, stiff throwback to a college dorm room. It’s a hybrid mattress that’s full of features you might not expect from a twin, including full-perimeter edge support, zoned coils, and a soft-yet-cooling pillow top.

According to my fellow lead product tester, Loren, it has “a very balanced feel” that should satisfy most kinds of sleepers. This versatility, coupled with all its bells and whistles, earned it the designation of Editor’s Pick.

What’s the Helix Midnight Luxe Made Of?

The Helix Midnight Luxe is 13.5 inches tall with six total layers.

  • Layer 1 – Cooling Pillow Top. One inch of cushiony quilted foam with a moisture-wicking Tencel™ cover. You can upgrade to a GlacioTex™ cover for extra cooling for an additional fee.
  • Layer 2 – Helix Responsive Foam. A quick-reacting foam that feels comfortable but shouldn’t sag too deep.
  • Layer 3 – Cooper Gel Memory Foam. Built for pressure relief and cooling, this memory foam cradles the body.
Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress Construction
The internal layers of the Helix Midnight Luxe
  • Layer 4 – Memory Plus Foam. The bed’s transitional foam layer between the comfort foams above and the spring unit below. It’s denser than traditional memory foams to up its longevity.
  • Layer 5 – Spring Unit. The coils here are zoned to feel more supportive beneath the hips and lower back, and more pliable elsewhere. They’re also reinforced along the edges of the bed.
  • Layer 6 – DuraDense Foam. The base layer stabilizes the mattress and gives the coils a strong foundation.

Our Take: “We use a heat map that shows pressure distribution and found that [the Helix Midnight Luxe] evenly distributes your weight, which helps keep pressure and pain off of the hips and shoulders of side sleepers … Back sleepers should feel neutral alignment here, and the lumbar support layer really helps the spine maintain its natural curve.” Loren Bullock, Lead Product Tester

What We Liked

  • Cozy without too much sinkage – As a hybrid bed, the Helix Midnight Luxe benefits from a highly supportive spring core as well as welcoming foam layers. “Basically, this bed isn’t going to swallow you whole, but the pillowtop offers enough cushion for comfort,” Loren reported.
  • Zoned coils – The springs in this mattress give a special boost to the lumbar spine and hips—two regions that tend to need lots of support. “The zoned support layer does a good job at pressure and weight distribution, so it’s a good option for folks with aches and pains,” Loren said.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Motion isolation isn’t great – Loren gave this bed a “C” grade for motion isolation, noting that you can definitely tell when someone’s moving around on it next to you. “It doesn’t feel like a mini earthquake, more like a jiggle. But either way, it’s still disruptive,” she said.
  • Too soft for some stomach sleepers – “If you’re a heavy stomach sleeper, this bed is probably going to throw your spine out of alignment,” Loren warned. “I would say, look for a firmer mattress.”

Customer Reviews of the Helix Midnight Luxe

On Helix’s website, the mattress scores 4.5 out of 5 stars. Customers appreciate the Helix Midnight Luxe mattress for its customized support but have reported that it may not be the best option for those who prefer an exceptionally soft sleep surface.

Why the Emma Original Earned Best Memory Foam Twin Mattress

With no springs to speak of, how can a memory foam twin mattress stand out in the crowd? The Emma Original answers this question with three specialized foam layers, including a base that’s divided into zones to give different levels of pushback.

Even though these are new takes on old foams, the bed itself shouldn’t be a budget-breaker. Emma keeps its prices relatively affordable, and this model is its most popular mattress. It’s a soft, all-purpose option for anyone who wants their twin bed to have a cradling feel.

What’s the Emma Original Made Of?

The Emma Original has four layers and stands 10 inches tall.

  • Layer 1 – Cover. A removable, washable top cover.
  • Layer 2 – Airgocell® Foam. A heat-resistant foam with an open-celled (rather than overly dense) structure.
  • Layer 3 – Halo Memory Foam™. Designed for pressure relief, this proprietary memory foam molds to the shape of your body.
  • Layer 4 – HRX (High Resiliency Extra) Foam. The base of the mattress. This foam is split into three zones with different amolunts of resistance, each of which encourages healthy spinal alignment.

Our Take: Some foam beds rely on simplicity and a thin design to keep their cost low. But the Emma Original balances affordability with some impressive proprietary foams, and we love to see zoning in a non-spring layer.

What We Liked

  • Takes the pressure off – This is a pretty soft mattress overall, and the three foam layers excel at relieving pressure from the body. Side sleepers should appreciate the swaddled feeling around their shoulders and hips.
  • Won’t strain your wallet – A twin-size memory foam mattress shouldn’t be as much of an investment as a larger, more complex model, and Emma has particularly attractive prices.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Not supportive enough for plus-size folks – Even though it’s 10 inches high, this bed probably won’t do a good enough job of supporting larger bodies. If you’re plus-size, consider a hybrid model instead.
  • Soft rather than lifting – If you want to feel boosted up by your mattress, this one won’t be a good fit. At a 5 out of 10 on our firmness scale, it feels soft and cradling rather than elevating. I wouldn’t recommend it to stomach sleepers.

Customer Reviews of the Emma Original

On the Emma website, reviews of their original mattress put it at 4.7 out of 5 stars. One negative aspect of the Emma Original mattress, according to some customers, is its softer firmness level, while a positive aspect is its excellent motion isolation.

Why the Nolah Natural Earned Best Cooling Twin Mattress

A mattress doesn’t have to be huge to pack a lot of cooling elements into its construction. The twin-size Nolah Natural helps to regulate your temperature at almost every layer, thanks to its eco-friendly materials.

How does it cool you down? Let us count the ways: airflow around its coils, hole-punched latex foam, and breathable wool and cotton all work together to prevent sweaty nights.

What’s the Nolah Natural Made Of?

The Nolah Natural has six layers, including its top cover. It’s 11 inches thick.

  • Layer 1 – Cover. Made of organic cotton, the soft cover permits cooling airflow.
  • Layer 2 – Organic Wool. Certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard, this wool serves as an eco-friendly fire barrier.
  • Layer 3 – Talalay Latex Comfort Layer. Latex foam relieves pressure while bouncing back into shape more readily than classic memory foams.
Nolah Natural Construction
A look inside the Nolah Natural
  • Layer 4 – Talalay Latex Transition Layer. Slightly firmer latex contributes support and buffers sleepers from the feel of the springs beneath.
  • Layer 5 – Coil System. Zoned into three segments that provide different amounts of resistance, the coil system encourages spinal alignment.
  • Layer 6 – Organic Wool and Cotton Base Layer. The bed’s stabilizing base.

Our Take: This is an earth-friendly twin bed with lots of safety and sustainability credentials. Its medium-firm feel makes it a good fit for most back and side sleepers, especially if you like the springiness of latex.

What We Liked

  • Natural materials – True to its name, the Nolah Natural is full of natural components, including Talalay latex, wool, and cotton. These materials also make it a heat-resistant and hypoallergenic bed.
  • Pressure relief with no slow sink – Latex allows for cozy cradling, but it springs back into shape quickly, unlike slower-moving foams. Many people love this combination of pressure relief and responsiveness.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Not for stomach sleepers – Stomach sleepers need more lift than this bed can provide. Their hips will probably feel too sunken-in, which leads to poor spine alignment.
  • Motion carries – The Nolah Natural is pretty springy, thanks to the latex and, well, the springs. This kind of bounce tends to lessen motion isolation. If you’re sensitive to a sleeping partner’s movements, you may want an all-foam bed instead.

Customer Reviews of the Nolah Natural

On Nolah’s website, the Nolah Natural gets a 4.8 out of 5 stars. Customers appreciate the Nolah Natural mattress for its eco-friendly materials and pressure relief, but some have reported a minimal initial off-gassing odor upon setup.

Why the WinkBed Earned Best Firm Twin Mattress

A good, firm twin mattress shouldn’t be flimsy or too thin. If you’re fond of a firmer feel, the WinkBed has a robust twin model with all the support features of its larger sizes. That means awesome edge support, zoned springs, and even a lumbar-focused foam layer.

Additionally, you can fine-tune the firmness a bit. Steer clear of the Softer model, but with the Luxury Firm and Firmer options, “you get the proper elevation you need to keep your hips elevated and spine in place,” Loren said.

What’s the WinkBed Made Of?

The WinkBed is 13.5 inches thick and arrives in one of four firmnesses: Softer, Luxury Firm, Firmer, and Plus.

  • Tencel™ Cover – Derived from the wood pulp of eucalyptus trees, this cover wicks moisture and stays refreshingly cool.
  • Euro Pillow Top – A quilted pillow top with gel-infused foam for plushness and pressure relief.
  • Additional Foam Layers – Between the top and the spring unit, you’ll find WinkBed’s proprietary LumbarLayer™ (which gives a boost of support to the lower back) as well as other specialized foams.
WinkBeds Mattress Construction
A view of the layers inside the WinkBed
  • Coils – Zones in the spring unit provide different levels of pushback to match the resistance your body needs. The coils are also stronger around the bed’s edges.

Our Take: “The pressure-relieving foams and zoned support work to keep your body weight evenly distributed, and the built-in lumbar support helps to prevent back pain.” – Loren, Lead Product Tester

What We Liked

  • Keeps you lifted – “The mattress is very bouncy and buoyant,” Loren reported. Rather than sinking into the layers, you should feel “the coils keep your body mostly elevated.”
  • Extra-strong edges – During testing, Loren noted that “those reinforced edges really do pay off. Seniors and couples will benefit from this the most because it’s easy to get in and out of bed.”

Potential Drawbacks

  • You’ll probably feel your partner’s movements – “This bed does not have the best motion isolation,” Loren cautioned. “If you or your partner are a lighter sleeper, you may want to look for a foam mattress.”
  • Not for foam lovers – As a hybrid bed, the WinkBed won’t swaddle you with foam, which some people prefer. Instead, you’ll feel boosted by all of its support elements.

Customer Reviews of the WinkBed

On the WinkBeds site, the WinkBed earns a 4.8 out of 5 stars. One drawback of the WinkBed mattress is that it might be too expensive for budget-conscious shoppers, but overall it offers excellent durability and customizable firmness options.

Why the Bear Original Earned Best Twin Mattress for Back Pain

The Bear brand aims to help people with active lifestyles sleep better while improving their recovery. Its Original mattress is an all-foam bed with three layers and a 10-inch height, adding up to a pleasantly portable twin mattress. Its supportive materials and medium-level firmness encourage proper spine alignment, which is a huge help for many sleepers with back pain.

For an additional fee, you can add a Celliant® cover to your Bear Original mattress, which could be beneficial for those with back pain. According to the makers of Celliant®, this textile converts kinetic energy into infrared light, which can reportedly reduce inflammation.

What’s the Bear Original Made Of?

The Bear Original is 10 inches tall with four layers.

  • Layer 1 – Tencel™ Cover. A breathable, soft cover. You can upgrade it to a Celliant® version for an additional fee.
  • Layer 2 – Gel Memory Foam. This foam conforms to the shape of your body while preventing too much heat buildup.
  • Layer 3 – Bear Dynamic Foam. A more supportive foam that sinks just enough to augment the bed’s pressure-relieving powers.
  • Layer 4 – High-Density Support Form. The bed’s strong, long-lasting base.

Our Take: “It’s a little firmer than the typical all-foam mattress, which should make it a little bit more versatile for different kinds of sleepers … It’s a great option for couples. It’s not likely you’ll disturb one another’s sleep.” Stuart Petty, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What We Liked

  • Firm for foam – “This bed is firmer than most all-foam mattresses overall,” Stuart commented. That firmness can beneficial for sleepers with back pain, or for anyone who prefers their mattress to feel more bolstering than plush.
  • Motion cancellation – The all-foam construction of the Bear Original makes it awesome at motion isolation. “I’m pretty sure you could do a cannonball into this bed and your partner would be none the wiser,” Stuart said.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Might be uncomfortable for side sleepers – The same firmness that might feel great for back and stomach sleepers probably won’t be plush enough for side sleepers. As Mark, another tester, put it: “When I was laying on my side, it was maybe just a little bit too firm. I was comfortable, but I do think I would have a hard time sleeping on it overnight.”
  • Celliant® costs extra – While other Bear models include Celliant® in their covers at no extra charge, this one requires you to pay a bit more if you’d like to test out the performance textile.

Customer Reviews of the Bear Original

According to Bear’s website, the Bear Original scores about 4.5 out of 5 stars. Customers appreciate the Bear Original mattress for its excellent pressure relief but have reported that its edge support may be lacking, which could affect those who use the full mattress surface.

Why the Birch Natural Earned Best Organic Twin Mattress

If you’d prefer a twin bed made from organic and eco-friendly materials, the Birch Natural has your back. It’s a latex hybrid mattress with a long list of reassuring certifications; Birch can even draw a clear line between the wool inside it back to the specific farm that supplied the textile.

The combination of organic cotton, organic wool, Talalay latex, and springs gives you “a mattress that should work well for those who want a little more bounce and mobility,” according to our tester Stuart.

What’s the Birch Natural Made Of?

The Birch Natural is about 11 inches tall and has six total layers.

  • Layer 1 – Organic Cotton Cover. GOTS-certified cotton welcomes you to the bed with a tufted cover.
  • Layer 2 – Fire Retardan Organic Wool. A wool layer replaces the synthetic fire barrers found in most mattresses.
  • Layer 3 – Organic Wool. A second sheet of wool helps to regulate temperature and adds a comfort layer to the bed.
  • Layer 4 – Talalay Latex. Sustainably harvested and certified by eco-INSTITUT to guarantee low emissions, this latex layer both relieves pressure and bounces back into shape quickly.
  • Layer 5 – Coils. Individually wrapped springs support your body, with extra-strong coils on the long edges.
  • Layer 6 – Base Wool Layer. A final wool layer acts as a fire-resistant base.

Our Take: “I feel more like I’m sleeping on this bed rather than sinking into it … The mobility and pressure relief offered by the latex and coil system are a huge plus.” – Stuart, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What We Liked

  • Repositioning is easy – This is a bouncy bed, perfect for combination sleepers who don’t want to feel restricted by layers that sink too deep. “I really appreciate the way the latex and coils respond to my movements, helping me to switch positions easier without feeling stuck in the bed,” said Stuart.
  • Natural cooling – The latex, wool, and cotton in this bed all have temperature-regulating properties, and the airflow around the springs helps to keep it cool, too.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Not a lot of motion isolation – This may be a less important factor in a twin bed, but if you do plan on sharing the mattress at all, be warned that it won’t cancel motion very well.
  • Not very plush – “If you want a softer mattress, this might not fully suit your needs,” Stuart cautioned. He experienced it as medium-firm, but recommended adding a soft topper if you want more sink.

Customer Reviews of the Birch Natural

According to Birch’s website, the Birch Natural scores a 4.6 out of 5 stars. While some users consider the Birch Natural mattress to be on the pricier side, it gains customer appreciation for its organic materials and sustainable, eco-friendly construction.

Why the DreamCloud Earned Best Hybrid Twin Mattress

Although its name implies fluffiness, the DreamCloud is a solidly medium-firm hybrid with an impressive amount of support. Its 14-inch height and cashmere cover also give it a touch of luxury—definitely a perk when you’re lying on a twin bed.

My fellow tester Stuart loved how buoyed he felt on his back, and as a stomach sleeper, I’m a big fan of the DreamCloud’s spine-aligning prowess. During testing, it kept me from sinking into the weird angles that might lead to soreness.

What’s the DreamCloud Made Of?

The DreamCloud is 14 inches high and has seven layers if you count its top and bottom covers.

  • Layer 1 – Cashmere Blend Cover. Soft and decorated with tiny clouds, this top cover looks and feels welcoming.
  • Layer 2 – Plush Foam (1.5 inches). This soft surface layer of foam is attached to the cover.
  • Layer 3 – Gel-Infused Memory Foam (1 inch). A pressure-relieving layer that molds to the shape of your body.
  • Layer 4 – Dynamic Foam (2 inches). A transitional, firmer layer of foam shields you from feeling the coils beneath.
  • Layer 5 – Spring Unit (8.5 inches). With thicker coils along the perimeter for edge support, these individually wrapped springs keep your body elevated.
Take a closer look at the mattress construction of the original DreamCloud mattress
The layers inside the DreamCloud
  • Layer 6 – Base Foam (1 inch). A dense layer of foam that the entire mattress rests upon.
  • Layer 7 – Bottom Cover. Attractive tufted borders and convenient handles add to the hybrid’s classy appearance.

My Take: In addition to the memory foam layers designed for supporting your back and cushioning your pressure points, wrapped coils work to give your body just the right amount of support it needs.

What I Liked

  • A nice mix of softness and support – For me, the DreamCloud’s medium-firmness is the ideal blend of soft pressure relief with a supportive fee. The initial plushness of its foams is backed up by a reassuringly firm foundation.
  • It absorbs motion well – “It’s bouncy and responsive, but it has pretty decent motion isolation, especially for a hybrid,” said Stuart. “You shouldn’t be too bothered by your partner’s movements during the night.”

Potential Drawbacks

  • Too firm for side sleeping – “DreamCloud isn’t our favorite for side sleepers,” Stuart remarked. “It’s just a little too firm for the average person to sink into.” This quality could lead to pressure buildup around the hips and shoulders, which you definitely don’t want.
  • The edges could be stronger – “DreamCloud is a bit lackluster on the edges,” said Stuart. If you need a lot of room to stretch out on your twin bed, then I recommend looking into beds with more edge support.

Customer Reviews of the DreamCloud

The DreamCloud Original scores a solid 4.7 out of 5 stars among customers on its site. One potential downside of the DreamCloud Original mattress is its weight, making it challenging to move or rotate, but it offers excellent support and comfort for those who prefer a medium-firm feel.

Why the Brooklyn Bedding Brooklyn Essential Earned Best Cheap Twin Mattress

The Brooklyn Essential is one of Brooklyn Bedding’s most affordable twin mattresses. When sales are running, you can snag this bed for around $400 or less—an awesome price for a hybrid. Although it doesn’t have many fancy extra features, it’s a reliable, durable option with many components that were manufactured in-house by the brand.

In terms of feel, it has a middle-of-the-road firmness, which is a good sweet spot for people who move around while they snooze. It offers pressure relief for side sleeping, as well as a firmer foundation if you spend time sleeping on your back or stomach.

What’s the Brooklyn Bedding Brooklyn Essential Made Of?

The Brooklyn Bedding Brooklyn Essential has four total layers that amount to 10 inches of height.

  • Layer 1 – High-Density Quilted Comfort Layer (1.5 inches). The plushest layer in the mattress, this layer is quilted with soft but robust foam.
  • Layer 2 – High-Density Transition Foam (0.75 inches). The transition layer ensures you won’t be able to feel any poking from the springs and complements the above comfort layer well.
  • Layer 3 – AscensionX® Coils (8 inches). These individually encased coils were made in-house by Brooklyn Bedding. The unit includes reinforced edges.
  • Layer 4 – Flex Base (0.25 inches). A high-density foam foundation.

Our Take: Sometimes, you just want a mattress that covers the bases and covers them well, no bells and whistles necessary. The Brooklyn Bedding Brooklyn Essential was named for its ability to do just that. It has a medium-firm feel and a hybrid design that should keep you feeling lifted, not sunken.

What We Liked

  • Wallet-friendly price – By making many of its components in-house, delivering straight from their factories, and sticking to the fundamental features for comfort, Brooklyn Bedding keeps the price of this mattress low.
  • Hybrid support – Most twin mattresses in this price range will be all-foam, but this one is a hybrid, meaning you’ll get added support and longevity from the steel coils.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Simple construction – This isn’t the bed for people who want to brag about their mattress’s list of features. It has everything you need, but no fancy bonuses to its design.
  • Not super plush – Because it consists of a coil unit topped by two comfort layers, this mattress probably won’t feel incredibly soft. Instead, it should feel buoying and medium-firm.

Customer Reviews of the Brooklyn Bedding Brooklyn Essential

According to Brooklyn Bedding’s website, the Essential mattress scores about 4.5 out of 5 stars. Users have noted that the Brooklyn Bedding Essential mattress offers a budget-friendly option for customers, however some have mentioned that it may not be as durable as higher-priced alternatives.

Why the Layla Earned Best Twin Mattress for Side Sleepers

The Layla gives side sleepers lot of bang for their buck—two mattress’s worth, in fact. This memory foam bed is a flippable mattress with a softer side and a firmer side. When your hips and shoulders crave some extra cushion, you can sleep on the soft surface. Alternatively, if you want them to feel cradled-yet-lifted, the firmer side should suit your needs.

Our tester, Stuart, enjoyed both sides for their different strengths, and noted that the bed’s foam swaddled his pressure points no matter what. “I definitely felt cradled by this mattress on both sides,” he said. “On the firm side I felt a little more on the mattress, and on the soft side I felt a little more in the mattres, but it was still very comfortable.”

What’s the Layla Mattress Made Of?

The Layla is 10.5 inches thick and has four internal foam layers between its top and bottom covers.

  • Layer 1 – Cover (Soft Side). The different sides of the Layla clearly delineated by the two-toned, hexagon-patterned covers: light gray for soft, dark gray for firm.
  • Layer 2 – Copper Gel Memory Foam. This foam mitigates pressure buildup and guards against excess heat. It feels more plush on the soft side.
  • Layer 3 – Max Airflow Support Foam. This layer’s egg-crate design lends itself to additional temperature regulation.
A closer look at the Layla Original mattress construction
The four foam layers inside the Layla
  • Layer 4 – Support Core Foam. Neatly sandwiched in the middle of the mattress, the core diminishes motion transfer and ups the bed’s durability.
  • Layer 5 – Copper Gel Memory Foam. A firmer variant of the same copper gel memory foam on the softer side.
  • Layer 6 – Cover (Firm Side). The dark gray version of the cover.

Our Take: “You can totally customize your sleep depending on how you’re feeling. Firmer one day, and softer the next.” – Stuart, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What We Liked

  • Flippable for flexibility – Even if you’re a memory foam skeptic, the versatility of the Layla is inclined to impress. Flipping the bed is relatively simple, especially if you’re purchasing a twin. One of our reviewers, Liz, said that “the option to be able to choose between firm and soft is amazing.”
  • Superpowered copper – The copper infusions in the Layla allegedly help the foam to firm up under high-pressure areas, providing what the brand calls “Variable Support.” Stuart confirmed that this element did seem to make the foam “even more responsive … it really feels like the mattress is adapting to your body.” What’s more, the copper conducts and attracts heat, so you shouldn’t feel too warm at night.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Too much give for stomach sleepers – Even the firmer side of the Layla may not accommodate stomach and plus-sized sleepers well, as they require more support than this bed offers. According to Stuart, “This mattress is great for back and side sleepers, but may be a little too soft for stomach sleepers. Their hips and lower back may sink in too much to sleep comfortably.”
  • Not much edge support – Both Stuart and Liz found the Layla’s edge support to be lackluster. “You may feel a little restricted in regards to surface space, especially if you’re sharing this mattress with a partner or pet,” said Stuart.

Customer Reviews of the Layla Mattress

On the Layla site, the Layla has an overall 4.5 out of 5 stars. Customers appreciate the Layla Memory Foam mattress for its reversible design with both firm and soft sides, but some have reported a potential issue with edge support.

Why the Plank Firm Earned Best Twin Mattress for Heavy Adults

If you’re plus-sized and searching for a supportive twin mattress, it can be difficult to find one that isn’t too thin, too saggy, or meant for children. But the Plank Firm rises above the norm—it’s an all-foam, exceptionally firm bed with a weight limit of 950 pounds.

Furthermore, it’s flippable! That means you can choose between a firm side and an extra-firm side, depending on your nightly needs. Just be aware that the Plank really does feel like its namesake, and isn’t meant for people who love a pillowy surface.

What’s the Plank Firm Mattress Made Of?

The Plank Firm has four layers and is 10.25 inches tall. For an extra fee, you can augment both sides with a cooling GlacioTex™ cover.

  • Layer 1 – Quilted Top, Extra-Firm Side (0.75 inches). On the extra-firm side, the quilted top is truly flat.
  • Layer 4 – High-Density Support Foam (6 inches). The foam core of the mattress is dense and durable.
  • Layer 3 – TitanFlex™ Foam (2 inches). This foam layer gives the firm side an extra bit of comfort and responsiveness.
  • Layer 4 – Quilted Top, Firm Side (1.5 inches). On the firm side of the bed, the quilted top has a smidge of loft and cushion to it.
Plank Mattress Construction
The inside of the Plank Firm

Our Take: “Changing your comfort setting is as easy as flipping over your mattress … Either way, you’re getting a firm, flat sleep experience designed to enhance your sleep health.” – Stuart, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What We Liked

  • Firm and flexible – Because of its flippable construction, the Plank Firm can accommodate sleepers who like an especially firm sleep surface as well as those who need an extremely firm one.
  • Supportive enough for back and stomach sleepers – The lift and spinal alignment you get from the Plank Firm should be well-suited to both back and stomach sleeping. You likely won’t feel any troublesome sinking around your hips or lumbar spine.

Potential Drawbacks

  • It’s not soft – The Plank Firm is not for side sleepers who need a lot of cushion—or for anyone who wants cushion from their bed, really.
  • It won’t do a lot of cooling – You can add a GlacioTex™ Cooling Cover to your Plank Firm, but it will cost you some extra money. Otherwise, the foam layers aren’t loaded with temperature-regulating ingredients.

Customer Reviews of the Plank Firm

On Plank’s website, the Plank Firm gets 4.8 out of 5 stars. Customers appreciate the Brooklyn Bedding Plank Firm mattress for its exceptional firmness, but some have found it to be too rigid for their comfort preferences.

How To Find the Best Twin Mattress for You: Key Considerations

The best twin mattresses will be small but mighty. Because they’re made to save space and often serve as a transitional or temporary bed, they may not be as durable as larger beds. However, a quality twin should still offer you reliable support and comfort.

When shopping for a twin bed, you’ll want to keep a few key factors in mind.

Mattress Type

There are four main types of mattresses available today, and you can order any of them in a twin-size. To pick the best one for you, you’ll need to consider the benefits and drawbacks of each kind of construction.

Innerspring Twin Mattress

An innerspring twin bed will have steel coils as its primary support unit and a thin comfort layer on top. This construction means there’s not much of anything between you and the coils.

This type of twin will be bouncy and supportive, but may also be squeaky and less comfortable than a bed with more cushion. Traditional innerspring beds are also prone to sagging over time. Because of these disadvantages, this type of mattress has been falling out of fashion in recent years.

Hybrid Twin Mattresses

Hybrid twin beds are more popular than innerspring models because they have more comfort layers above the coil unit. They might feature memory foam, poly foam, or other pressure-relieving materials in these upper layers.

Hybrid mattresses offer more versatility than innersprings, too. The makeup of the comfort layers helps to determine the feel of the bed, so you can look for softer, firmer, or bouncier models depending on your preferences.

The standout drawback of a hybrid twin bed is the price. These beds can be quite expensive, depending on their components, and may not be worth the price if you’ll only be using your twin mattress for a few years or so.

Memory Foam Twin Mattresses

Memory foam twin mattresses are made entirely from layers of viscoelastic polyurethane foam—the kind of foam that sinks slowly beneath you, but reforms to its original shape when you’re not lying on it.

A memory foam mattress offers gentle cradling and cushioning for pressure relief. However, it can still support your body and encourage proper alignment, especially if it’s the right density for your body type and preferred sleeping position.

Memory foam can run a bit too warm, making it difficult for hot sleepers to get a good night’s rest. However, many manufacturers now infuse their foams with cooling materials such as copper and gel to mitigate this issue.

Foam is a sound choice of material for a twin bed, as all-foam beds tend to be a bit more affordable than hybrids and more comfortable than traditional innerspring models.

Latex Twin Mattresses

A latex mattress uses latex foam as at least one of its comfort layers. Natural latex foam is touted as an eco-friendly material, as it’s made from rubber tree sap. (Some brands use synthetic latex foam, so be sure to research which type you’re getting in a given mattress.)

Latex can relieve pressure like traditional foams, but also has more springiness to it. It’s hypoallergenic and innately cooler than memory foam, as well.

The downside of a latex twin mattress is that it’s bound to be pricey. Additionally, some people don’t like how bouncy latex feels—they prefer the slower-moving sink of memory foam.

Size

While browsing twin mattresses, you may notice there’s another size available, called the twin XL. The difference between a twin and a twin XL mattress is simple: the twin XL is 5 inches longer (but it has the same 38-inch width).

twin size compared to twin xl size

Twin XL mattresses are great for taller sleepers, as the extra five inches provide a bit more leg room. Teenagers or college students who need more room to stretch out but don’t have the bedroom space for a full- or queen-size mattress may want to buy a twin XL. Just be sure that if you do choose this longer twin model, you buy twin XL sheets and bedding to match!

For more twin mattress size comparisons, consult our guides:

Thickness

Because of their relatively small size, twin mattresses are often assumed to be thin and flimsy. But a good twin bed will be just as thick as a larger one—anywhere from 8 to 14+ inches—to accommodate layers for both comfort and support.

If you’re looking for a twin mattress that you won’t use for very long, then a thinner profile isn’t as big of an issue. You may also need to limit the thickness of the mattress if you plan on using it as a bunk bed. But in general, the best twin beds will be no less than 6 inches thick, and probably much thicker.

Firmness

Regardless of the mattress size you’re shopping for, firmness is always an important factor to consider. And, just like all the other sizes, twin-size beds can run the gamut in terms of feel. Don’t compromise on your preferred firmness just because a twin bed might not be in your life for very long!

Softer twin beds are best for side sleepers and those who weigh under 130 pounds. A medium firmness is best for back sleepers, although plus-size back sleepers should lean towards a firmer twin bed that provides more support. Finally, stomach sleepers almost always prefer firm mattresses for how well they support the hips.

Your Age

Twin beds can work for people of all ages. However, a person’s mattress needs will evolve at different stages of their life.

A twin mattress for an adult should have greater durability and more advanced support features than one for a child or teen, for example. These younger age groups are more likely to use a twin bed temporarily, whether it’s in their childhood bedroom or their college dorm. Twin beds in these settings aren’t built to last as long as those for adults.

Shopping for your children? Browse the best mattresses for kids and the best beds for teens.

Weight & Body Type

Your weight and frame greatly influence how a twin mattress will feel when you lie on it. Generally speaking, heavy people will prefer firmer twin mattresses, while those weighing under 130 pounds should get a softer bed.

Plus-size sleepers should also ensure that they’re buying a twin with enough layers and support features to prevent sagging and discomfort.

Edge Support

Edge support is crucial for smaller bed sizes like the twin, because no matter where you are on the mattress, you’re near an edge.

Certain twin beds will have better edge support than others. Hybrids, for example, tend to have sturdier edges due to reinforced springs along the sides. However, foam beds can also have edge support features (such as a denser foam frame around the perimeter).

As you browse, take note of which twin mattresses have dedicated edge support. You don’t want to buy one without it.

Budget

Thankfully, twin mattresses are some of the most affordable, given their compact size and portability. You should be able to find a very good twin mattress for less than $1,000, and perhaps even for less than $500, depending on sales.

Keep in mind that cheaper twin beds tend to be thinner and have less layers. Even if you’ll only be sleeping on a twin for a limited amount of time, don’t settle for an uncomfortable bed or mysterious, potentially unsafe materials.

Twin Mattress FAQs

What are the dimensions of a twin mattress?

A twin mattress measures 38 inches wide by 75 inches long.

These dimensions make them a good mattress option for children and teens. However, twin beds can also work well for adults, especially those under 6 feet tall who sleep alone and need to save space.

What is the best thickness for a twin mattress?

A quality twin mattress should be at least 8-10 inches thick. If a twin mattress is less than 6 inches thick, it’s probably not very durable and will be prone to sagging and losing its shape.

How much is a twin mattress?

A good twin mattress will probably cost you between $500 and $1,500. When discounts are active, however, you may be able to purchase a twin bed for even less.

Who has the best prices on twin mattresses?

Brands such as Brooklyn Bedding and Emma often run sales that lower the price of their twin mattresses to less than $500.

For example, the Brooklyn Essential, our pick for the Best Cheap Twin Mattress, is often on sale for less than $400.

Where is the best place to buy a twin mattress?

We recommend buying your twin mattress online from one of the brands above rather than from a brick-and-mortar store. Ordering a mattress this way tends to be less expensive, more convenient, and more flexible when it comes to returns. You’ll also be able to try the bed for weeks to months at home, instead of relying on a brief trial-run inside the mattress store.

What is the best firm twin mattress?

We think the WinkBed is the best firm twin mattress available. You can order it in one of three firm feels: Luxury Firm, Firmer, and Plus (the last of which was designed for plus-size sleepers). It’s a hybrid bed with extra lumbar support in both its foam and coil layers, and a Euro top for a bit of pressure relief at the surface.

Do twin mattresses fit on a daybed?

Many daybeds do accommodate a standard twin-size mattress, though some might require a full or double model. Check your daybed’s dimensions by consulting the manual, contacting the manufacturer, or measuring them yourself.
