Osteoporosis is a disorder characterized by a weakening of the bones. It’s caused by either losing bone or not regenerating it at a normal pace. When this happens, the skeletal structure isn’t dense enough to fully support body weight and impact.
The result is a tendency for the bones to become more fragile. This can cause pain and discomfort in some sleepers and makes spinal alignment and pressure relief vitally important. What’s even more alarming is that bone loss associated with osteoporosis affects nearly 54 million Americans.
If you suffer from this condition or you’re in an at-risk group, you’re probably wondering about the best bed for someone with osteoporosis. You’ll want something that’s comfortable, responsive, and supportive enough for your skeletal health.

Why the Helix Midnight Earned Best Mattress for Osteoporosis Overall
The Helix Midnight has multiple features that can offset the symptoms of osteoporosis, earning it the top spot in this roundup. Namely, it’s a well-rounded hybrid bed that offsets cozy pressure relief with responsiveness and support.
If osteoporosis affects your mobility, you may benefit from a bed that contains springier layers to foster easier repositioning. The Midnight’s foams provide both cushioning and this crucial bounce-back, and its responsive coils should also facilitate easy movement during the night. Lastly, this mattress has a versatile medium-firm feel that can suit back and side sleeping, both of which are preferable to stomach sleeping if you have osteoporosis.
What’s the Helix Midnight Made Of?
The Midnight has six total layers and stands 11.5 inches tall.
- Layer 1 – Cover. You can stay with the standard soft cover or order a GlacioTex™ Cooling Cover for an additional fee.
- Layer 2 – Memory Plus Foam. This proprietary Helix foam lightly cradles the body’s pressure points.
- Layer 3 – Helix Responsive Foam. This foam has a springer feel than the Memory Plus Foam above, but should still mold to your body a bit.
- Layer 4 – Helix Responsive Foam. The subsequent layer of Helix Responsive Foam is more supportive than the one before it.
- Layer 5 – Coil Unit. The springs in the Helix Midnight are individually wrapped and reinforced on the long sides of the bed for edge support.
- Layer 6 – DuraDense Foam. The foam base at the bottom of the bed anchors the layers above.
What We Liked
- Beneficial for back sleeping – Back sleeping is the most heartily endorsed position for people with osteoporosis, and the Midnight earned high marks when tested this way. “This bed performs great for back sleepers,” said Emma. “The mix of comfort and support is just right.”
- Good motion isolation – “This bed is a hybrid with decent bounce, so we were actually really surprised by how well it isolated motion,” Emma commented. If you share a bed with a partner, this trait can prevent the lighter sleeper from waking up due to movement.
Potential Drawbacks
- Not for stomach sleepers – If you have osteoporosis, stomach sleeping isn’t recommended—but if you must stick to that position, know that this bed isn’t built for it. “I might suggest a firmer mattress for exclusive stomach sleepers,” Emma said.
- Not a ton of cradling – Emma liked the slight cushion she felt under her high-pressure areas on the Midnight, but noted that the layers didn’t sink as much as they would in an all-foam mattress. “If you want that old-school memory foam feel, this bed may not be for you,” she concluded.
Customer Reviews of the Helix Midnight
The Helix Midnight rates 4.5 stars out of 5 on Helix’s website. The main negative is that reviewers tend to find it too soft for their liking and feel as though they’re sinking. But overall, users say they’re getting a great nights’ sleep and some pain relief.

Why the Nolah Signature Earned Best Mattress for Pressure Relief with Osteoporosis
People struggling with osteoporosis often have problems with pressure build-up, especially those who prefer sleeping on the side. The Nolah Signature is a great memory foam option for pressure relief, providing gentle cradling.
The bed features AirFoam™ in two layers: the first one is softer, while the second supports the body and prevents it from sinking too deep into the mattress. AirFoam™ is Nolah’s proprietary foam that the brand claims is 300 percent more durable than traditional memory foam. Plus, it’s unlikely to sag as quickly.
What’s the Nolah Signature Made Of?
The Nolah Signature has five total layers and stands 12 inches tall.
- Layer 1 – Organic Cotton Cover. A breathable, sweat-wicking cover that hasn’t been treated with bleach, thereby preserving the natural color of the cotton.
- Layer 2 – Plush AirFoam™ (2.5 inches). A cushiony layer of Nolah’s signature foam that should provide pressure relief without overheating or making you feel stuck.
- Layer 3 – Active Response Foam (1.5 inches). A bouncy foam with a very breathable structure that adds to the bed’s cooling capabilities.
- Layer 4 – Firmer AirFoam™ (1 inch). A more supportive layer of AirFoam™ that should simultaneously continue to take the pressure off key joints while encouraging healthy body alignment.
- Layer 5 – High-Density Foam Foundation (7 inches). A durable, bolstering base that Nolah also labels as breathable.
What We Liked
- Plush under sore sports – The Nolah Signature mattress is rated 5/10 on our firmness scale, which is among the best firmness levels for pressure relief. It should fit dedicated side sleepers and combination sleepers well. “When laying on it, it really hugged those areas that I wanted it to and … just relieved that pressure,” said another tester, Mark.
- Firm for your spine – Liz, a Sleep Advisor tester who often experiences joint pain, was a big fan of the Signature. “They somehow found the perfect mix of plush to firm ratio,” she marveled. “I found it completely supportive as well as plush.”
Potential Drawbacks
- Quite soft – Heavier people and stomach sleepers will want to steer clear of this bed. Our plus-sized tester, Sean, said that he didn’t feel supported enough and sunk a bit too deeply into the layers while trying it.
- Ho-hum edge support – As an all-foam bed, the Signature won’t offer the same degree of edge support as a hybrid with reinforced coils around the perimeter. Emma said that the sides compressed noticeably under her weight, especially when she sat on them.
Customer Reviews of the Nolah Signature
The Nolah Signature gets a 4.8 out of 5 stars on Nolah’s website. One potential drawback of the Nolah Signature mattress is its limited firmness options, but it excels in providing exceptional pressure relief and a cooling sleep experience.

Why the WinkBed Earned Best Innerspring Mattress for Osteoporosis
Regardless of which firmness you choose for the WinkBed, you’re getting a handcrafted mattress with a cozy surface and an advanced innerspring unit at the base. “The coils are zoned so there’s … plenty of pressure relief for my shoulders and hips, which I really appreciate,” said one tester, Sean.
The zoning and pocketing of these coils should make this bed a sound choice for someone with osteoporosis—rather than comprising a big interconnected system, the springs vary in the amount of resistance or cushioning they provide under different regions of the body.
What’s the WinkBed Made Of?
The WinkBed is 13.5 inches high, and the thickness of its layers may differ depending on which firmness you select.
- Tencel© Cover – Derived from Eucalyptus wood pulp and manufactured in eco-friendly, water-saving ways, this cover is breathable and moisture-wicking.
- Euro Pillow Top – A quilted pillow top that resists overheating and cushions pressure points with “Hypersoft Foam.”
- Additional Foam Layers – Other foam layers—such as the LumbarLayer™, which supports the lower spine—offer support and make for a comfortable transition to the bed’s coils.
- Innerspring Unit – The coil unit consists of pocketed springs split into zones with varying amounts of pushback that correspond to different parts of the body. The coils are also reinforced along the bed’s edges.
What We Liked
- Lots of possibilities – The WinkBed is a pretty unanimous hit with the testing team, which makes sense given its customizability. You can order this hybrid bed in one of four firmnesses: Softer, Luxury Firm, Firmer, or Plus (intended for heavier folks).
- Great edge support – This mattress will keep you securely on top of it, even if you’re sidling up to its sides. “I can roll right up to the edge of the bed without losing that supportive feel,” said Sean.
Potential Drawbacks
- Motion won’t be canceled out – As a hybrid bed with springs as part of its construction, the WinkBed will transfer bounce and motion across its surface. “This mattress might not provide the same level of motion absorption as an all-foam bed,” said Sean, though he noted that the pocketed springs are better at dampening movement than interconnected ones would be.
- No deep hug – The WinkBed won’t cradle you within a deep indent; rather, it’ll keep you elevated. “People who like to feel like they are sleeping in the bed may feel more like they are floating on top of this mattress,” Sean reported.
Customer Reviews of the WinkBed mattress
On the WinkBeds site, the WinkBed earns a 4.8 out of 5 stars. One drawback of the WinkBed mattress is that it might be too expensive for budget-conscious shoppers, but overall it offers excellent durability and customizable firmness options.

Why the Bear Star Hybrid Earned Best Mattress for Athletes with Osteoporosis
The Bear Star Hybrid has a not-so-secret ingredient that makes it appealing to active folks and athletes: a performance textile called Celliant®. These fibers can allegedly convert body heat into infrared energy, which can then reduce inflammation and encourage post-workout recovery.
Sporty people with osteoporosis should also appreciate the Bear Star Hybrid’s responsive foams and coils, as both of them help with middle-of-the-night repositioning.
What’s Bear Star Hybrid Made Of?
The Bear Star Hybrid is 13 inches tall and has five layers.
- Layer 1 – Cover. The cover has both HydroCool® technology and Celliant® fibers built-in. As such, it should stay relatively cool and may even help your body to recuperate after a day of activity.
- Layer 2 – Serene Gel Foam. This gel-infused foam should keep unwanted heat out while also cradling pressure points.
- Layer 3 – Responsive Comfort Foam. A springy foam that both relieves pressure and readily changes its shape when you move around.
- Layer 4 – Innersprings. Individually wrapped coils form the main support component of the bed, with stronger springs on the sides for sturdy edges.
- Layer 5 – High-Density Support Foam. A base layer that gives the springs a place to rest and ups the entire bed’s longevity.
What We Liked
- Versatile, responsive feel – Stuart thought that the Bear Star Hybrid felt good across multiple sleep positions, thanks to its responsive materials. He never felt “stuck” in the bed and could move around without issue.
- Cooling components throughout – A cooling cover, gel-infused foam, and springs that enable airflow all work to help keep this bed at a comfortable temperature.
Potential Drawbacks
- Might be too tough on side sleepers – Side sleepers, especially petite ones, need a lot of cushioning under their shoulders and hips. This mattress isn’t especially plush, so it probably won’t be the best fit for this demographic.
- Weak edges – Stuart said that the edge support on this bed left a bit to be desired. If you like to spread out onto the sides of your mattress, consider hybrids with higher edge-support ratings.
Customer Reviews of the Bear Star Hybrid
Coming in at approximately 4.5 out of 5 stars on Bear’s site, a potential downside customers noted of the Bear Star Hybrid mattress is that some users may find it too firm, but it is praised for its strong support and cooling properties, promoting a comfortable sleep environment.

Why the DreamCloud Premier Rest Earned Best Mattress for Couples with Osteoporosis
The DreamCloud Premier Rest Hybrid is DreamCloud’s tallest and most luxurious bed, with no less than four foam layers above its spring unit. Its pillow top is exceptionally cushiony and does a lovely job at relieving pressure, which can certainly help with relieving osteoporosis symptoms.
Couples should appreciate this bed for its impressive profile, soft feel, and decent motion isolation. It’s an especially good fit if you’d like a bit of a hug-like feel from a hybrid bed, which can be hard to find.
What’s the DreamCloud Premier Rest Made Of?
The DreamCloud Premier Rest Hybrid is 16 inches tall and has eight layers if you count its lower cover. All of its foams are CertiPUR-US® certified.
- Layer 1 – Cashmere Blend Cover. Made of a breathable cashmere blend, the cover feels velvety soft.
- Layer 2 – Memory Foam (1 inch). The first layer in the bed’s plush pillow top, this memory foam molds to your silhouette.
- Layer 3 – Soft Foam (1 inch). A corresponding layer of slightly more supportive plush foam is also quilted into the pillow top.
- Layer 4 – Comfort Foam (1 inch). Below the pillow top, this layer of comfort foam eases you into the transitional layer of foam below.
- Layer 5 – Transitional Foam (3.5 inches). This foam both supports your spine and protects you from feeling springs inside the coil unit.
- Layer 6 – Innerspring Unit (8.5 inches). The coils in this bed are individually wrapped and thicker around the edges.
- Layer 7 – Base Foam (1 inch). A thick foam base bolsters the springs and keeps the rest of the mattress stabilized.
- Layer 8 – Lower Cover. The tufted lower cover has handles for easy transport and keeps the internal layers nicely stacked.
What We Liked
- Quite soft for a hybrid – This bed should please sleepers who love a hyper-pillowy surface. It can be tough to find a hybrid that has any degree of welcoming sink to it, but the DreamCloud Premier Rest has found a way to strike a balance between strong springs and a very cushiony top.
- Built for back and side sleepers – If you sleep on your back or side, the DreamCloud Premier Rest should work well for you. It’s got enough resistance from its springs and firmer foams to encourage good spine alignment, accompanied by lots of pressure relief.
Potential Drawbacks
- Stomach sleepers will sink too much – I’m a stomach sleeper, and my hips sank much too low into this bed’s pillow top. It was noticeable enough that I don’t think combo sleepers who spend some amount of time on their stomachs should consider this bed.
- Edge support isn’t great – I felt secure when lying at the edges of this mattress, but when I sat up on them, they were prone to buckling.
Customer Reviews of the DreamCloud Premier
Coming in at 4.5 out of 5 stars on DreamCloud’s site, the DreamCloud Premier receives a majority of positive reviews. Customers praise the DreamCloud Premier mattress for its luxury feel, but some have noted that it may not be the best choice for those on a tighter budget.

Why the Layla Memory Foam Earned Best Memory Foam Mattress for Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis symptoms can change in severity throughout your life, and therefore, an adaptable mattress is a good bet for staying as comfortable as possible. The Layla mattress has a flippable design that gives you access to two feels: a softer side and a firmer one.
“The soft side of the mattress has a more swaddling feel, and [it’s] definitely more plush,” said Stuart. The firmer side made him feel more elevated and “on top” of the mattress, but still gently cradled.
What’s the Layla Memory Foam Mattress Made Of?
The Layla mattress is 10.5 inches tall and has four internal layers between its top and bottom covers.
- Layer 1 – Cooling Cover (soft side). The cover on the soft side of the bed is decorated with white and gray hexagons, and features cooling technology that reacts to your body temperature.
- Layer 2 – Copper Gel Memory Foam. The copper inside this foam helps with cooling as well as protection from germs. The foam allegedly firms up as more pressure is applied, resulting in an adaptive surface that can both support and cushion your body.
- Layer 3 – Max Airflow Support Foam. This foam has channels cut into it to assist with airflow, and is partitioned into zones that offer tailored levels of support.
- Layer 4 – Support Core Foam. The core of the mattress is a thicker foam that ups the bed’s durability and dampens motion.
- Layer 5 – Copper Gel Memory Foam. On the firmer side of the mattress, there’s only a single layer of this foam (without the Max Airflow Support Foam) between the cover and the core.
- Layer 6 – Cooling Cover (firmer side). The cover on the firmer side of the bed has black and gray hexagons.
What We Liked
- The flippable design – It’s hard to ignore the flip factor. Stuart praised the Layla’s versatility, saying, “You can totally customize your sleep depending on how you’re feeling. Firmer one day, and softer the next.”
- No motion ripples – This mattress has excellent motion isolation. “Jump up and down, dance a little, feel free to wiggle all you want,” said Stuart—you probably won’t disturb your partner.
Potential Drawbacks
- Stomach sleepers need more support – “This mattress is great for back and side sleepers, but may be a little too soft for stomach sleepers,” Stuart advised. “Their hips and lower back may sink in too much to sleep comfortably.” Liz agreed: “This bed, being an all-foam [mattress], doesn’t quite give me as much support as I’m looking for.”
- Edge support isn’t stellar – With no reinforced edges, this mattress won’t prevent you from rolling off if you’re balanced right on the side. “You may feel a little restricted in regards to surface space, especially if you’re sharing this mattress with a partner or pet,” Stuart said.
Customer Reviews of the Layla Mattress
On the Layla site, the Layla has an overall 4.5 out of 5 stars. One potential drawback of the Layla Original mattress is that its flippable design might not be as convenient for customers who prefer a fixed firmness, but it provides versatile comfort options with both soft and firm sides to choose from.

Why the Saatva Zenhaven Earned Best Mattress for Back Pain from Osteoporosis
Zenhaven is a latex mattress from Saatva, a company whose luxury beds have exemplary features for back pain and spinal alignment. Both the quilted cover and latex layer of this bed were constructed to soothe sore backs. The cover includes added quilting around the lumbar region, whereas the natural latex is zoned into five areas that correspond to different regions of the spine and body.
This mattress has two different firmnesses built into it, one on each side, giving you a choice between a firmer or softer bed, depending on what works best for you and your experience of osteoporosis.
What’s the Zenhaven Mattress Made Of?
The Zenhaven is 10 inches high and, because it’s flippable, has a roughly symmetrical arrangement of layers around its latex core. One side is described as Luxury Plush; the other as Gentle Firm.
- Layer 1 – Quilted Cover. A cover made from organic cotton helps your back from the very moment you lie down. It has “Lumbar Zone® Quilting” that firms it up beneath your lumbar spine.
- Layer 2 – Organic New Zealand Wool. This GOTS-certified wool serves as a fire retardant and also a moisture-wicking, germ-resistant comfort layer.
- Layer 3 – Zoned Natural Latex. This latex layer is divided into five zones that offer different degrees of support based on their location. The latex foam is also aerated with channels for breathability. It’s this layer that also dictates the feel of the side you’ve chosen: either Gentle Firm or Luxury Plush.
- Layer 4 – Latex Support Cores. Two sheets of natural latex foam form the inner support layers of the bed.
- Layer 5 – Zoned Natural Latex. The same as Layer 3, but with a different feel so you can experience two firmnesses in a single mattress.
- Layer 6 – Organic New Zealand Wool. The same as Layer 2.
- Layer 7 – Quilted Cover. The same as Layer 1.
What We Liked
- Zoned latex – Not only does the luxurious Talalay latex in this bed offer great pressure-relieving comfort, but the clever design also uses aeration holes placed at different distances from one another to provide zoning. By varying firmness in the comfort layer, the materials should be able to cradle and support different weights and hold your body level.
- Flippable design – I suggest the firmer side for heavier folks who need extra support, and the softer side for lighter individuals who sometimes struggle to push through the comfort layers. However your tastes run, you can try out both sides to see which is the most comfortable and pain-reducing.
Potential Drawbacks
- The higher price tag – Saatva doesn’t skimp on luxury or eco-friendly materials. The only downside to this amount of consideration is that the price of the bed rises accordingly.
- Not everyone loves latex – Latex has a signature feel that differentiates it from other foams. Most notably, it’s bouncier than memory foam, so you won’t experience the same kind of “hug” you get from that material.
Customer Reviews of the Zenhaven mattress
On the Saatva website, this mattress scored a 4.9 out of 5 stars, from 315 reviews. Customers appreciate the Saatva Zenhaven mattress for its natural latex construction and durability, but some have mentioned that its price point may be higher than other latex mattresses on the market.

Why the Puffy Royal Hybrid Earned Best Mattress for Side Sleepers with Osteoporosis
Side sleepers press their sensitive hips and shoulders into their mattress every night, so it makes sense that they need a bed with a very soft feel. The Puffy Royal Hybrid is, no joke, one of the plushest beds on the market. When I was lying on it, I felt its foam layers gently mold around the curves of my side to cancel out any and all pressure buildup.
If you have osteoporosis, that kind of pressure relief can feel amazing on your bones—you just want to be extra-sure that you’re not sinking so deeply into the bed that your spine is at odd angles.
What’s the Puffy Royal Hybrid Made Of?
The Puffy Royal Hybrid is 14 inches thick and has seven total layers.
- Layer 1 – Stain-Resistant Cloud Cover. The cover has a zipper and is removable if you want to throw it in the washer. It’s also decorated with cute little clouds!
- Layer 2 – Gel-Infused Cooling Foam (1.5 inches). The gel inside this extremely plush foam helps to keep temperatures cool.
- Layer 3 – Reflexive Memory Foam (1.5 inches). Memory foam with a bit more responsiveness than average, so you get pressure relief plus a bit of bounce.
- Layer 4 – Climate Comfort™ Foam (2 inches). A proprietary foam that guards against humidity and encourages airflow.
- Layer 5 – Cloud Air Technology Foam (2 inches). A zoned foam layer that provides different degrees of pushback or give across its surface, mapping to your body parts.
- Layer 6 – Firm Core Support Foam and Contour-Adapt Coils (7 inches). The coil layer in this bed features individually wrapped springs surrounded by a thick perimeter of foam for edge support.
- Layer 7 – Grip Base Cover. A textured lower cover keeps your bed and its layers in place.
What I Liked
- Intense pressure relief – This bed earns its kingly name when it comes to pressure relief. It’s soft and cozy around my joints, with lots of sink but also a fair amount of responsiveness, so you’re not feeling too stuck.
- Cancels motion – All that foam is a great recipe for motion isolation. Even though there is an innerspring unit in this mattress, I wasn’t very troubled by movement made elsewhere on its surface.
Potential Drawbacks
- Too soft for some preferences and positions – This hybrid is so soft that I hesitate to recommend it to people who need lots of palpable support—namely, heavy people and back sleepers. Strangely enough, it felt better to me on my stomach than on my back.
- Temperature regulation isn’t stellar – I have a hard time calling this a cooling mattress. It has lots of cooling materials, but I just didn’t feel like my temperature dropped by a noticeable amount during testing. That being said, I was never too hot, either!
Customer Reviews of the Puffy Royal Hybrid
On Puffy’s site, the Puffy Royal has 5 out of 5 stars. While customers appreciate the Puffy Royal mattress for its cloud-like comfort, some have reported that it may trap heat, potentially causing discomfort for hot sleepers.

Why the Nectar Earned Best Mattress for Back Sleepers with Osteoporosis
The Nectar is an all-foam bed that should be familiar to anyone who’s browsed the online mattress market. Unlike many other memory foam models, it has enough firmness to be beneficial for back sleepers with osteoporosis. Its supportive core strives to preserve spinal alignment even as you enjoy its pressure-relieving foam layers, and its competitive price also makes it an excellent option for value-seekers.
Sleep Advisor’s editor, Jill, found the Nectar to be a little firmer than she expected. But its feel turned out to be a feature, not a bug. “I’ve noticed it’s been easier to fall asleep on my back with the Nectar,” she said after several nights of testing.
What’s the Nectar Mattress Made Of?
The Nectar is 12 inches tall and has three foam layers, plus a top and bottom cover.
- Layer 1 – Cover. The Nectar’s breathable top cover has fibers in it that should help to absorb heat.
- Layer 2 – Gel Memory Foam (2 inches). This foam has gel inside it that keeps it relatively cool, as well as soothing, pressure-relieving powers.
- Layer 3 – Dynamic Response Foam (3 inches). Firmer than the foam above, this bouncy material gives your spine enough resistance to encourage healthy alignment.
- Layer 4 – ActiveSupport Base Foam (7 inches). A sturdy foam that lasts long and functions as the bed’s foundation.
- Layer 5 – Lower Cover. This cover holds the layers of the mattress together.
What We Liked
- Plush foam on top – My fellow tester Emma is a big memory-foam fan. “I like the gentle cradling … [It feels] like I’m a tiny little swaddled baby,” she said. The Nectar delivers on this front, with an initial comfort layer that molds to your silhouette and allows the load-bearing parts of your body to completely relax.
- Good edge support for a foam bed – Sometimes, beds without coils struggle to keep their edges from buckling. But the Nectar stays pretty sturdy along its sides. According to Jill, “There was a minimal amount of sinkage along the edges of this bed … I was able to sleep comfortably in the center and on the perimeter.”
- It’s affordable – Nectar has kept its prices reliably low in comparison to competitors. You can commonly find a queen-sized Nectar for hundreds less than $1,000 during promotions.
Potential Drawbacks
- No spring-based support – All-foam beds won’t have quite the same robustness or responsiveness as those with spring units. As a consequence, “heavier sleepers or people who want to spread out a little more might want something with a bit more support,” said Emma.
- Not as cool as a hybrid – “[The Nectar] didn’t provide as much cooling as we hoped,” said Jill, who tested this mattress with her partner. Although they both enjoyed the bed and found it quite comfortable, they didn’t recommend it for people who sleep without access to air conditioning or other cooling measures.
Customer Reviews of the Nectar mattress
With thousands of reviews on Nectar’s website, the Nectar mattress has an average 4.8 out of 5 stars. One common customer complaint about the Nectar mattress is its longer-than-average break-in period, while many customers praise its excellent value and comfort once fully settled.

Why the TEMPUR-ProAdapt Earned Best Mattress for Arthritis and Osteoporosis
Arthritis and osteoporosis are both conditions that call for lots of pressure relief from your mattress. Motion isolation can also be helpful, as it prevents sensitive joints from feeling too jostled by movement on the bed. The TEMPUR-ProAdapt excels in both of these areas, and has four distinct constructions to choose from—including a hybrid version, if you’d like a bit of springiness in your bed.
What’s the TEMPUR-ProAdapt Made Of?
The TEMPUR-ProAdapt is 12 inches tall, and its composition changes depending on which version you order: Soft, Medium, Medium Hybrid, or Firm. Each model will have a comfort layer followed by a support layer, and both will be made of a proprietary foam developed by Tempur-Pedic. The Medium Hybrid model will also feature responsive coils at its base.
What sets the Pro-Adapt apart from the standard Adapt model is its incorporation of TEMPUR-APR™ foam. The Soft, Medium, and Medium Hybrid versions of the ProAdapt have this foam as their support layer, whereas the Firm version positions it as its comfort layer.
Soft Version:
- Comfort Layer – TEMPUR-ES® Material (5 centimeters). The brand’s plushest foam, designed for pillowy coziness.
- Support Layer – TEMPUR-APR™ Material (5 centimeters). This material has pressure relief as its top priority, and it prevents tension from accumulating in any one area by contouring to your silhouette.
Medium Version:
- Comfort Layer – Original TEMPUR® Material (5 centimeters). An adaptive foam that molds to your body. It adjusts its firmness according to factors including weight and temperature.
- Support Layer – TEMPUR-APR™ Material (5 centimeters). See description above.
Firm Version:
- Comfort Layer – TEMPUR-APR™ Material (3 centimeters). See description above.
- Support Layer – Original TEMPUR® Material (5 centimeters). See description above.
Medium Hybrid Version:
- Comfort Layer – TEMPUR-ES® Material (6 centimeters). See description above.
- Support Layer – TEMPUR-APR™ Material (4 centimeters). See description above.
- Innerspring Layer. Coils enhance the bed’s supportive properties, its responsiveness, and the strength of its edges.
What We Liked
- Lots of customizability – Depending on your firmness preferences, you can pinpoint the exact right ProAdapt model for you. You’ll get the brand’s signature foams no matter which one you select, but the feel should be well-matched to your tastes.
- Pressure relief night after night – This company leads the pack in pressure-relieving materials. Your joints should be cozily cradled while your spine stays within its natural, neutral alignment.
Potential Drawbacks
- Costly – Those cutting-edge materials come at a higher price than mattresses with more standard constructions. Prepare to spend thousands on a Tempur-Pedic bed, and keep an eye out for deals.
- You have to love the hug-like feeling – These mattresses absorb pressure by swaddling you in their state-of-the-art foams. But if you’re someone who prefers to stay firmly on top of your mattress, you probably won’t like the sensation of sinking into a ProAdapt.

What to Look for in a Mattress for Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis1 causes bones to weaken and often become brittle. This can make everyday tasks, including sleeping, painful. Considering that we spend a large portion of our lives in bed, you will want a mattress that provides comfort and relief.
Although there isn’t a specific mattress for osteoporosis, there are features that you can look for that can help you get quality sleep.
Type of Mattress
Innerspring Mattresses
Innerspring mattresses are a more traditional style. When you lie down on a bed with springs, the force that your body weight exerts onto the coils is pushed right back at you. Some of these beds have zoning or comfort layers to make sure that spinal alignment stays at the appropriate level. If high bounce is too much for you, you may purchase a different type of material instead.
Hybrid Mattresses
Hybrid mattresses consist of foams and spring coils. The type of foam and coils can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.
These kinds of beds like to take the best of foam beds and traditional innerspring mattresses to appeal to numerous body types and preferred sleeping positions. The foam provides comfort and pressure relief while the innerspring unit offers support and bounce.
Memory Foam Mattresses
If you’re interested in a memory foam bed, you can find a mattress that has multiple layers of varying densities. Look for something that has a softer upper layer that contours to your curves with a denser, more supportive base layer to provide the right amount of support.
Avoid cheaper brands that contain low-density foam only. These beds may feel okay for a couple of months, but they can deteriorate rapidly.
Latex Mattresses
Latex mattresses can also work well for those with osteoporosis. If you look for natural latex, it is sourced from the sap of a rubber tree. It’s a greener alternative and is said to be more durable than synthetic materials, but you can find both on the market.
Both latex and memory foam beds now offer the zoned support we discussed earlier. If it’s in your budget, this is a splurge you can consider.
Other Considerations When Shopping for a Mattress for Osteoporosis
Spine Alignment & Support
Keeping the spine in the right position is especially important for those who have osteoporosis. When you lie in bed, your spinal column should retain the same shape it has when you’re standing up. It should be relatively straight, while still maintaining its natural curvature.
Many people can find relief in a “zoned” mattress, or something with uniform sinkage, to ensure that the surface of the bed absorbs your weight evenly. The way a zoned mattress works is that it’s softer in areas for body parts that put more pressure on the surface (like your hips and shoulders) and firmer in parts where less of your weight pushes into the bed.
Sleeping Position
Side sleepers will want a mattress that gently cradles the curves of their shoulders and hips while keeping their spine aligned. To lessen the pressure on your spine, though, it is recommended to sleep on your back2. Those with osteoporosis may want to consider sleeping in this position on a medium-firm bed that can provide support and pressure relief.
If possible, you may want to avoid sleeping on your stomach after an osteoporosis diagnosis. This position can cause your hips to sink too far down in the mattress, putting stress on the lower back.
If you cannot switch to sleeping on your back or side, you will want to find a firm bed as this will help keep your hips elevated and your spine aligned.
Combination sleepers tend to fare well on responsive, medium-firm beds that accommodate multiple positions and foster easier repositioning.
Weight/Body Type of Sleepers
People with a lower body weight3 or body mass index are more likely to develop osteoporosis, and these sleepers should find relief on a soft to medium mattress, depending on the position they sleep in.
Heavier people are less likely to develop osteoporosis.3 However, it can happen, and if it does, a firmer, more supportive mattress can keep these sleepers from pushing through the comfort layers too quickly and compromising their body alignment. As for average-weight people with osteoporosis, they will likely get their best sleep on a medium-firmness mattress.
Firmness
A common misconception is that people with osteoporosis need a firm mattress to support their bones. However, a bed that is too hard won’t necessarily allow for proper spinal alignment and may be felt as uncomfortable for those with brittle bones.
Although beds on the softer side may be appealing for those experiencing aches and pains from low bone density, these may not be ideal for providing the type of spinal alignment and balanced support that those with osteoporosis need. If this is an issue that you’re dealing with, you may want to check out a medium-firm mattress. The level of firmness should be soft enough to absorb the weight of your body’s heavier parts, especially when you lie on your side, but firm enough to prevent you from sinking too deeply into the surface of the bed and out of alignment.
Cooling
Feeling cold can be a side effect4 of osteoporosis. If you experience this, you will likely want to steer clear of mattresses that are constructed with advanced cooling technology.
The coils in innerspring and hybrid mattresses can foster airflow, which can cause these beds to feel cooler than others. Standard memory foam beds don’t sleep as cool, and as such, they could be a good choice for those who get cold easily.
However, if you have osteoporosis but aren’t getting cold, a cooler mattress could help you sleep more comfortably.
Motion Isolation
Motion isolation describes how well a mattress contains the movements of one partner to their side of the bed. This feature may be especially useful for those experiencing aches and pains from osteoporosis because if motion from a restless restless pet or partner is traveling to your side of the bed, it could exacerbate your symptoms. Memory foam mattresses can be a solid selection for those with osteoporosis, as they can provide comfortable contouring and prevent motion transfer.
Sex
Although osteoporosis doesn’t prevent a healthy sex life5, some considerations may need to be made. It is important to remember that certain positions may be painful and even dangerous.
People with osteoporosis can often benefit from the gentle cradling of memory foam, but the slow-moving nature of this material can prove unconducive for sex. Latex and latex hybrid beds can be a good choice for those with osteoporosis who are sexually active. These beds are responsive and springy to facilitate ease of movement during sex, but they still provide comfort and pressure relief to ease pain.
Pressure Relief
Osteoporosis can be painful. Therefore, those who have it are likely to want to find a bed that can provide them with the most relief6 possible. Memory foam and latex mattresses often provide gentle contouring and an even distribution of weight. This type of construction can help with spinal alignment and provide overall comfort and stability.
Edge Support
Edge support refers to how well your weight is supported around the perimeter of the bed. This can be beneficial for those with osteoporosis since good edge support can make it easier to get in and out of bed. Additionally, mattresses with this feature can make sleepers feel secure when they are sleeping on the side of the bed.
Budget
The amount spent on a mattress is a consideration for most shoppers. Those with osteoporosis will want to make sure that their bed provides comfort, support, and ease of movement.
While a great deal is one thing, it shouldn’t come at the expense of quality. Fortunately, the online direct-to-consumer sales model gives shoppers access to numerous high-quality beds at more budget-friendly prices.
Osteoporosis is a disease in which there is loss of bone mass, leading to weak and brittle bones that make those who have it more susceptible to fractures and break.7. This disease is caused by aging and how much bone mass you built up during your youth.
During your younger years, the body makes new bone faster than it breaks down old bone. This increases your bone mass and makes it more difficult to break a bone. However, by around the age of 308, most people have reached their peak bone mass, and after that, they will start to lose bone mass faster than it is gained.
Race and gender also affect your chances of getting osteoporosis. Non-Hispanic white and Asian women, along with non-Hispanic white men are more likely to develop osteoporosis.7
A proper, well-made mattress can help foster a healthy spine alignment and pressure relief to help people with osteoporosis feel more at ease when they lie down at night. Being comfortable increases your chances of getting adequate sleep.
What Is the Best Sleeping Position for Osteoporosis?
Back Sleeping
Sleeping on your back lessens the pressure on your spine, making it a great choice for those with osteoporosis. Finding a mattress with medium firmness that provides even weight distribution can help ease some aches and pains.
Side Sleeping
Side sleeping is a popular choice for many people. However, for those with osteoporosis, it is paramount that the right mattress is chosen to ensure adequate pressure relief around the shoulders and hips while maintaining spine support.
Combination Sleeping
Combination sleepers with osteoporosis will need to pay special attention to how easy and comfortable it is for them to move on a mattress. These sleepers will want to look for a bed that makes it easy for them to transition from one position to another. Latex, innerspring, and hybrid beds are responsive and should encourage ease of movement.
Stomach Sleeping
If possible, those who have osteoporosis should avoid stomach sleeping because of the pressure it can put on the lower back. If you’re unable to stop sleeping on your stomach, look for a firm, supportive enough mattress that can keep your midsection elevated.
- Use pillows for additional support – Pillows can be a great way to reduce pressure on the body. Back sleepers can place a pillow9 under their knees, whereas side sleepers can place a pillow between their knees and then pull their knees slightly up. In the case of stomach sleepers, they can place a pillow beneath their pelvis to help keep the hips lifted for optimal spine alignment.9
- Add a mattress topper – Mattress toppers can change the feel of a bed that is too hard or too soft, allowing those with osteoporosis to feel more comfortable.
- Take melatonin – After checking with your medical provider, you may want to take melatonin to help you get quality sleep.
- Invest in quality bedding – Quality bedding, such as premium sheets, can provide comfort to help you sleep better.
How to Prevent Osteoporosis
Although there are certain factors that may make you more susceptible to osteoporosis, there are steps10 you can take to help prevent this disease.
- Regularly participate in physical activity.
- Stick to a consistent sleep schedule [4].
- Consume alcohol in moderation.
- Refrain from smoking.
- Eat a well-balanced and nutritious diet.
What is the best mattress firmness for sleepers with osteoporosis?
Beds that are classified as medium-firm tend to work best for those with osteoporosis. Beds on the softer side may offer comfort and softness for brittle bones, but they may not provide enough support or be able to properly keep spines aligned.
What’s the best sleeping position for osteoporosis of the spine?
Sleeping on your side or back11 is considered ideal for those with osteoporosis. Remember, if you sleep on your side, you can place a pillow between your knees to help train your body to stay in alignment. Back sleepers can also put a pillow under their knees to relieve any undue pressure.
Should I invest in a mattress topper if I have osteoporosis?
Mattress toppers can be helpful if you’re trying to adjust your mattress and want to avoid spending lots of money on a new bed altogether. However, you should avoid buying a mattress topper to help save a sagging bed that’s beyond its useful life.
